This week is all about energy prices, featuring a deep dive with Patrick DeHaan, Head of Petroleum Analysis for Gas Buddy. Energy prices have been one of the significant drivers behind inflationary pressures we've seen over the last year… and in recent months, now that energy prices have started to abate, inflation is as well. But energy prices still remain high by historical measures. Back in February, Patrick DeHaan, Gas Buddy's Head of Petroleum Analysis, joined us to talk about what was happening in energy markets, and what a Russian invasion could mean for energy prices. His comments proved highly omniscient. I'm excited to have him back today to give an update on energy prices, including how energy prices are determined, the major factors impacting energy markets today, as well as what his near and longer-term outlooks are for energy prices so you can financially prepare. We cover what drives gas prices, including: What are the major drivers in the current energy market The role of Russia, China, India, and Russian sanctions on gas prices Why gas prices have fallen since summer, but are likely to go up again Why the longer-term outlook for gas prices is likely higher and more volatile His best ideas for a smoother energy transition with less costs to consumers ... and more! Mid-Sept through Mid-Nov when refineries do maintenance.- Coincided with Europe trying to build diesel storage, made for a tight situation though not as bad as the media played it.- Refinery utilization has been very high - unseasonably high numbers.- 25 days of distillate has jumped to 31 days meaning now we have $4.89/gallon- Cold spell coming up in US. CPC predicting colder than normal weather - pressure on heating oil. As a result of anticipated cold weather, wholesale price of diesel is going up. That will justify refiners keeping utilization high. Will help keep gasoline production up.- Refineries will continue to have above normal utilization but only in low 90s, probably- Europe has lost 6% of its refining capacity due to Covid. US only lost 5%. Market for U.S. products in Europe is good. - "The door is wide open for US refiners to fill that void."- Northeast has a population 10 times that of the Rockies but has the same refining capacity as the Rockies.- This why US needs more refining capacity. There is a huge need for refining capacity. - Closure of Philadelphia refinery was huge. It produced 1/3 of a million barrels a day. - Governments trying to incentivize bio-diesel. Tremendous incentives from government to convert but capacity is lower than traditional petroleum products. Conversions are happening at a bad time. Refining hasn't been lucrative until this year.Check out https://open.substack.com/pub/gasbuddyguy/p/gas-price-decline-hits-five-weeks? This is a public episode. Gas prices are central to everything these days. Biden's approval rating seems to move inverse with the price of gasoline. The entire market started rallying after gasoline prices started moving lower in June. But then, what exactly determines the price of gasoline? Of course oil is a big part of it, but it's just one significant driver. There is also refining capacity. And taxes. And the gas station's margin. And the cost of distribution within the United States. So how does it all shake out? On this episode we speak with Patrick DeHaan, head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, who breaks it all down, and helps us understand the market for gasoline.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
