Another year is about to start in the NHL, and the Carolina Hurricanes are a Stanley Cup contender. The Canes didn't have the most exciting offseason. Similar to the Philadelphia Flyers, the Canes re-signed some necessary depth players and players key to the organization. Some of those depth players include Dmitry Orlov and Caleb Jones on defense. General Manager Don Waddell has always done well to make sure the Canes are a competitive defensive team. He also made a splash, landing Michael Bunting from the Toronto Maple Leafs as a free agent. Bunting is coming off a slight down year in points but did tie his career-high in goals with 23. This roster may not be the flashiest in the league, but this team is always competitive and plays a blue-collar game. Do the Hurricanes finally break through and return to the Cup Finals for the first time since 2006? Now the Columbus Blue Jackets are coming off a massive down year where they found themselves with the third overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft. They don't have very high expectations, but Adam Fantilli, who was taken with the third overall pick, is bringing a lot of excitement back to the Blue Jackets fanbase. Adding him to the mix with Johnny Gaudreau and Patrick Laine will definitely add excitement and creativity to this offense. The Jackets also revamped their defense from last season, bringing in Ivan Provorov from the Flyers and Damon Severson from the New Jersey Devils. Also working in the Jackets' favor is hopefully getting Jake Bean back for the season opener. The Jackets are a team that some people will have their eyes on as an improving team with the moves this offseason. Can the Blue Jackets finish the season with more than 30 wins? The Metro Division will be one of the most intriguing divisions to watch all season long. With teams like the Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils leading the chase for the division title, you can't rule out teams like the New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins to make a push for the playoffs as well. Now many people will rule the Philadelphia Flyers, Washington Capitals and Columbus Blue Jackets out of the race before the season starts, but should things go right, they could be dark horse teams that could compete for the second Wild Card spot. The Metro Division has been and will continue to be one of the toughest divisions in the NHL.
It has been a great week for cinema. Between Barbie and Oppenheimer, people are flocking to the movie theaters. Join Jess and Nick as they decide what the Calgary Flames movie would look like. Would the opening scene be the Connor McDavid elimination overtime goal? How do you weave in management and ownership while not losing the plot? Imagine scenes with Johnny Gaudreau driving around with his wife and they call Brad Treliving with their answer. You flash over to a kitchen table with Matthew Tkachuk, Brady Tkachuk and Keith Tkachuk all weighing out their ( Matthew's) options. Do you wrap it up in a nice bow or leave it open to a sequel? The Calgary Flames were in an interesting spot this time last year. Johnny Gaudreau showed every sign of interest in re-signing and Jonathan Huberdeau was nowhere on the Flames radar. The Flames had every reason to be hopeful for the upcoming season. A lot happened in six weeks and then an 82 game season to change that outlook. The Calgary Flames saw quite the turnover last summer. Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk left a hole in the Flames lineup and offensive capabilities. Jonathan Hubderdeau had a significant drop off in performance. Worst in NHL history, for that matter. How did Huberdeau's arrival impact the Calgary Flames? Elias Lindholm was looking around for familiar faces and couldn't find any. The Selke runner-up doesn't just fall off. What is it going to take to get Lindholm back to his full potential? Tyler Toffoli was written off when he stepped up to fill Matthew Tkachuk's shoes. Toffoli had a career year and solidified himself as a top six player. What does his future with the Flames hold? The Calgary Flames established themselves as a middle-of-the-pack team. They weren't scoring an excessive amount of goals. Jacob Markstrom wasn't playing out of his mind in the net. There was a significant drop-off in a few crucial areas for the Flames. While they felt the absence of Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk, Tyler Toffoli certainly stepped up and did the best he could. The defense looked decent too but where were their mistakes and how can things change going forward? Plus, the pair look at the injuries and how the team can benefit from a longer offseason. The early examination of the offseason has begun. Join Jess Belmosto and Nick Zararis as they dissect the ups and downs of an 82-game season. How did this roster go from a first-place team to full blown bad? Was there player mismanagement? Was it the disconnect between Brad Treliving and Darryl Sutter? Was it a combination of things that just spiraled out of control? The Flames had a lot to do after losing Johnny Gaudreau and Matthew Tkachuk. There was no way to live up to the expectations of the prior season but falling this short should be viewed as unacceptable. Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Locked On Predators - Daily Podcast On The Nashville Predators
The Nashville Predators faced off against Johnny Gaudreau and the Columbus Blue Jackets in their second game of a back to back. While the Preds came away with goals from Cody Glass and Yakov Trenin, it was the play of Kevin Lankinen in net that earned Nashville two very valuable points as they push to get into the playoff conversation. It wasn't a stellar performance by the Predators last night as they eked out a close win over a struggling Columbus team. On today's Locked On Predators, we break down last night's "just OK" win with our "one word" to describe the game. We hear from head coach John Hynes on the poor power play performance last night and talk about what Nashville may need to do to get special teams going again. Cody Glass is playing with a ton of confidence on the top line with Filip Forsberg and Matt Duchene. Glass shares what is different about his mindset at this point in the season, and Nick and Ann hotly debate whether head coach John Hynes helped or hindered Glass through his early season struggles. We discuss the value of backup net minder Kevin Lankinen, especially as the Predators look down the road at a possible playoff opportunity. Finally we talk about the crossroads ahead for this Nashville Predators team. It feels like time is running out on this core group of players. Is this organization facing a tipping point, and if so, do we think they will pull the trigger on the hard decisions for the future? #nashvillepredators #preds #nhlhockey Subscribe to Locked On Predators for free on your favorite podcast app! Send some good vibes to podcast mascot, Tiny Dreger, the Great Dane's knees might require Dregs to take on endorsement deals to pay off the vet bills! Ray's SUPER awake after a ‘thousand hammer' cold shower, just in time for Episode 31! Headlines covers John Tortorella backtracking on comments he made on the All-Star game as the brash coach tries to do the impossible in Philadelphia. Just what is the game-plan for the Flyers? The guys take a look at the albatross contracts and re-build/re-tool decision in Philly. Unlikely goaltending standouts Pheonix Copley and Martin Jones are given their due as the LA Kings and Seattle Kraken sit comfortably in playoff position in the Pacific Division. Trade talk heats up with the Senators as a potential fit for pending UFA Matt Dumba? Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin is faced with a decision similar to the Calgary Flames and Johnny Gaudreau last year. Ray has a bone to pick with Kris Abbott as he committed a betting faux-pas via text message this weekend. The pod took a collective ‘L' with Aaron Rodgers ending his season with 3 INT's in a loss to the Detroit Lions. World Juniors bettors saw great returns on the underdog bets as Czechia's performance was an outlier few saw coming. Ask Ray & Dregs sees questions on whether modern day NHL'ers will employ the ‘speed bag' tactic when dealing with bad teammates. A hypothetical Bedard for Matthews trade is examined as the hype around 1st overall gives bottom feeder teams some hope for the future. Ray is asked about facing hard-nosed defenceman Darius Kasparaitis in his playing days.
