The March WASDE dropped Tuesday, March 11th, and bullish farmers and traders looking to see upside for corn and possibly soybeans too were disappointed the USDA held pat across the two major U.S. grain balance sheets. Wheat, on the other hand, which was expected to go unchanged, overshot expectations in a bearish direction, but markets on the day ended up. Go figure.Luckily, we're joined once again this week by DTN's Lead Markets Analyst Rhett Montgomery, who will not only take us beat by beat through the latest numbers, but also help us understand why the numbers did and didn't shift, and why we might expect greater changes this month, even when they didn't arrive in March. As we zoom in on the domestic and global balance sheets, Rhett explains how a near final weather outlook for the Latin American crop season is changing USDA, and the market's, perspective on stocks, and how updates to wheat numbers out of the black sea region may, and may not, create more opportunity for U.S. wheat growers in 2025. Then, Rhett talks tariffs, recession, and how to follow markets and news during an uncertain planting season.

A video went public of Trump, JD Vance, and Zelensky sitting at a meeting discussing continued U.S. support of Ukraine. Trump called him a poor leader and accused him of disrespect that he was unthankful what we had done for him so far. Was it just a publicity stunt? Trump admitted it makes great TV. We wonder the purpose of making it public. An alternative site accused Bill Gates of pumping Bird Flu into the food supply. A meme went viral stating that Gates was caught injecting birds. However, that is a bit irrational. We find the meme came from a tabloid media source that others adopted in their own publications to accuse Gates of personally being involved. Like Bill is out on farms sneaking in to inject their livestock. While the story is far fetched, and of course Gates Foundation spokespersons deny that Gates admitted such, it can be believable that Gates would favor such incidents to promote the need for vaccines, in which he is fully invested. His foundation donated chickens to Africa that may have been infected, so this gives a foundation (no pun intended) for such a story of intent. Will we see full documents on the Epstein Files or JFK? Many suspect a redacted highly edited copy to be made public.

For a full list of credits, and for the rest of the episodes, visit the series page. They will back with a new season focussed on environmental politics in early 2025, so make sure you are subscribed to the podcast (Apple, Spotify, manual RSS). The MAGA movement scores big wins by taking cheap shots at experts. Now, some worry that Donald Trump could try to oust Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell. The typical centrist position is to defend the supposedly impartial, apolitical expertise of such figures. Yet, we know that is not exactly right either. Is there a better way to imagine a better bank? In our first segment, we speak with Frances Coppala, author of The Case for People's Quantitative Easing. It's something of a case study in Fed politics, revealing how their decisions post-Global Financial Crisis served the rich, and not working people. Yet, saying that these experts are political does not mean we have to be hyper-partisan reactionary hacks. Instead, democratizing the bank could offer a better way forward. That's according to Annelise Riles, a professor of law and of anthropology, and author of the book Financial Citizenship: Experts, Publics, and the Politics of Central Banking. Riles is also host the Foreign Policy podcast Everyday Ambassador, which its new second season out now.
