JFS-Architect of Controversial LDS Orthodoxy (Bowman 4 of 4)

Joseph Fielding Smith is the architect of controversial LDS orthodoxy. He has some controversial writings about Blacks and Ezra Taft Benson. We'll also delve into his role with Lowell Bennion, a BYU professor who was fired. Was JFS responsible or was it someone else? Matthew Bowman answers. We'll also dive into his role in shaping orthodoxy in the 20th century. Check out our conversation... https://youtu.be/toqjRr1B8Eo Joseph Fielding Smith: Architect of Controversial LDS Orthodoxy Joseph Fielding Smith described as a "lightning rod" due to some views considered politically incorrect today, particularly regarding race. Dr. Matt Bowman, author of "Joseph Fielding Smith, a Mormon Theologian," sheds light on Smith's impact on the church. One of the most uncomfortable aspects of Smith's legacy is his writings about Black individuals, especially concerning the priesthood. In his work, The Way to Perfection, Smith explicitly stated his subscription to the theory that people of African descent were less righteous in the pre-existence. He used language suggesting they were "not entitled to be born white." Smith was a staunch "defender of the racial restrictions" in the Church and became a major exponent of the idea, which the source traces back to Orson Hyde, that Black people possessed souls less righteous in the pre-existence. This stance led to prominent public clashes, notably with church educator Lowell Bennion at a symposium in the early 1950s. Their argument over the ban contributed to Bennion's eventual dismissal by Ernest Wilkinson, who was president of BYU and commissioner of church education. Wilkinson viewed Bennion as too liberal on race and saw Smith as an ally in this regard. While Wilkinson was the person who carried out the dismissal, the collision with Fielding Smith helped instigate the decision. Disagreement with Benson Smith also had complex relationships, even with those seen as ideologically sympathetic. Despite being viewed as a fellow conservative, Smith had significant disagreements with Ezra Taft Benson. A letter from Smith exists in which he hoped Benson's "blood will be purified" upon his return from a mission in Europe in the 1960s. Smith was skeptical of the Church becoming heavily involved in American politics, viewing Benson's fascination with politics as distasteful and inappropriate for an apostle. He considered it "unseemly" and "disreputable." Smith also saw Benson as a conspiracy theorist, distinguishing standard conservative politics (like that of Dwight Eisenhower or David McKay) from conspiracy theory. Smith hoped Benson's time away would rid him of these inclinations, allowing him to return as an apostle rather than an aspiring amateur politician. This highlights that "real deep divides" can exist even within the conservative camp. Controversial LDS Orthodoxy Perhaps Smith's most enduring theological contribution was his role in developing the idea of orthodoxy within the Latter-day Saint tradition. Orthodoxy, an older Protestant concept particularly associated with John Calvin, posits that being a faithful member requires believing certain things and that incorrect beliefs can jeopardize salvation. This was not a central idea in the early Christian Church's first century. Smith, possibly influenced by Protestant fundamentalism, began insisting in the mid-20th century that belief is actually really important and that believing "the correct ideas" were crucial because incorrect beliefs could "ruin your salvation." He defended this notion vigorously. Historically, while early Christianity saw debates over ideas like the Trinity, and Roman Catholicism emphasized sacraments and art for teaching, the strong push for average members to understand and adhere to correct doctrine emerged from the Reformed Protestant tradition. Smith's emphasis on orthodoxy gained significant traction in the church. When he became President, many members of the Quorum of the Twelve were individuals he ...

This is a special four-minute edition of Chatter That Matters. Canada's economy and sovereignty are under threat—not from weapons but from tariffs. This isn't the moment for political grandstanding, showboating, posturing, or scoring points. It's time for extraordinary. RBC sponsors my podcast, and this weekend, I had the honour of reading a note from their President and CEO, David McKay, that was sent to all of their employees. RBC didn't ask me to do this, and they are not compensating me. I am reading his letter to you, hoping you will listen to his words, and intent. This is the kind of leadership our country requires.  Positivity, possibility and making Canada's destiny a matter of choice, not chance. Please listen to it and share it. David McKay's remarks and others of similar tone deserve a much broader audience, spanning our private and public sectors without geographic or partisan boundaries or biases.  Canada. This week on Unsupervised Learning, Razib and his guest, David McKay, of the Standing on the Shoulders of Giants podcast (Razib was an early guest), discuss the rise of artificial intelligence (AI) and the prospects for artificial general intelligence (AGI). This discussion arose after Razib heard McKay's explainer, Zen and the Art of ChatGPT, a 30-minute layman's intro to the topic, where he breaks down the technical elements that come together to allow for AI. In this episode, McKay, a Cambridge University-trained computer scientist who has worked at Hotmail and Google, digs deeper into the nature of Large Language Models (LLMs) and how they give rise to probabilistic generative AI like ChatGPT and whether we should be worried. Razib's conversation with McKay follows another recent episode on AI. I  the earlier podcast, Nikolai Yakovenko: GPT-3 and the rise of the thinking machines, the interviewee, a computer scientist, was relatively sanguine about the world-ending possibilities of AGI. McKay generally takes the same position, highlighting the reality that most computer scientists and AI researchers are less worried about science-fictional apocalyptic scenarios than the general public or AI-skeptics like Eliezer Yudkowsky and Nick Bostrom (the author of Superintelligence: Paths, Dangers, Strategies) are. And yet the reason that AI is so topical is it seems that the development of the technology is proceeding along an exponential path; ChatGPT 4 was released months after ChatGPT 3. McKay and Razib also discuss the release of Bard, Google's chatbot, and the offering from Microsoft's Bing, and how they are similar and different from ChatGPT.  While McKay is optimistic about the possibilities of AI as a tool, ultimately, he is in the camp that believes it really isn't intelligent in the same way as a human. Because it relies on the corpus from the internet, ChatGPT cannot really do math. It lacks true conceptual understanding that would allow it to grasp truth beyond what the internet might tell it. Razib and McKay also talk about the energetic resources that LLMs consume (Microsoft had to reallocate compute resources after the release of Bing's chatbot), and how that might be a limitation on their scalability.

Where Are The Black Physicists? Black scientists make up less than one percent of physics PhDs in the U.S. And since 1999, most physics departments in the country have failed to graduate more than one or two Black undergraduates. Furthermore, the share of Black students in physics is declining: If the number receiving a bachelor's degree in physics had kept pace with the rising popularity of the major, there would be 350 Black physicists graduating every year. Instead, in 2020, that number was 262. But why is this number so small? A comprehensive investigative series in Science Magazine this week examines those statistics, the academic climate of physics departments, and how academia may be limiting the achievement of Black students. The series also highlights some success stories about proposed solutions, with mixed results. But why is physics a uniquely white, male discipline—and how can institutions make the climate more friendly to students from marginalized backgrounds? Ira talks to Apriel Hodari, one of 150 Black women to receive a PhD in physics in the U.S., who now researches the culture of higher education in STEM fields.   Why The Equinox Can Make Your Credit Card Fail Twice a year, people listening to signals from satellites in geostationary orbit face a problem known as a solar outage, a solar transit, or sun fade. Around the spring equinox, the Sun approaches the equator from the south, as the north gets ready for spring. In the fall, near the autumnal equinox, the Sun appears to move back below the equator. During these times, it comes into the view of Earthbound satellite dishes directed at geostationary satellites positioned some 22,000 miles above the equator. When a ground receiver, the satellite it's looking at, and the Sun all line up, the radiation from the Sun can temporarily overwhelm the satellite receiver. Think of it like when you're driving on a westbound road close to sunset, and you're staring straight into the setting sun—it gets hard to read the road signs. The effect is temporary: a maximum of 12 minutes at any given location for several days in a row. But it can affect everything from a satellite TV dish to credit card processing at your local gas station—even public radio stations receiving live programming over the satellite network. SciFri's Charles Bergquist talks with Chris DeBoy, who teaches a course in satellite communications at the Johns Hopkins University (and is also the RF communications lead for the New Horizons Mission to Pluto, and the Space Engineering Branch Manager at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory), about the advantages and disadvantages of geostationary satellites, and what can be done to minimize the impact of solar outages. They are joined by MaryJane Peters, technical operations chief at KAZU in Monterey, California, who describes the effect the seasonal outages have on station operations. Can Meteorites On Earth Point To Ancient Life On Mars? In 1996, the late astrobiologist David McKay and his team published a paper arguing that a four-pound rock from Mars, called Allan Hills 84001 (found in Antarctica), showed evidence of ancient microbial life on the planet Mars. The team pointed to several mineral structures, including tiny beads of magnetite, as well as shapes that might be fossilized bacteria. This hypothesis ignited a storm of controversy and a flurry of research that contradicted the team's theory. But decades later, ALH 84001, like the other meteorites that have been linked to the Red Planet, remains an important insight into Martian geology and the formation of organic molecules in the absence of biological processes. Producer Christie Taylor talks to astrobiologist Andrew Steele, who has been studying ALH 84001 and other meteorites for decades. He discusses the process of probing meteorites for data, the difficulty of studying rocks without their original contexts, and how new samples from the Perseverance rover could change everything. Plus, how the original controversy over ALH 84001 changed the trajectory of planetary science.   From Zero To 100 Butts: The Wild World Of Invertebrate Behinds Recently, the staff of Science Friday came across a tweet that caught our attention, sent out by researcher Dr. Maureen Berg.   Turns out, it was a call to source comic ideas for Invertebrate Butt Week, a celebration of—you guessed it—the butts of invertebrates. “Invertebrates really get the short end of the stick,” says Rosemary Mosco, the creator of the comic series Bird And Moon and #InverteButtWeek organizer. “People are not as excited about them as, say, a majestic whale or a beautiful bird. And I love my birds, but [invertebrates have] such an incredible diversity. So, butts are sort of a cheeky way to access some of that amazing diversity and celebrate it.”   Rosemary and other scientists and illustrators teamed up to create #InverteButtWeek, a celebration of the behinds of the backbone-less. “It's a chance for some people who do science communication to do the silliest thing that they can possibly think of,” says Dr. Ainsley Seago, curator of invertebrate zoology at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.   Science Friday's Daniel Peterschmidt talks to the organizers of #InverteButtWeek about how it came together, their favorite invertebrate butt facts (like how sea cucumbers have anal teeth), and how you can participate in the celebration.

Daily Success Strategies - Jeff Heggie Entrepreneur & Coach

Jeff Heggie Daily Success Strategies Podcast 065: Act Well Thy Part www.JeffHeggie.com What roles do you have in your life? Father, husband, mother, wife, son, daughter, boss, employee, coach… The list goes on and one for every one of us. How well are you doing in those roles? Today I talked about a story from Hyrum W. Smith's book, “What Matters Most – The Power of Living Your Values.” Hyrum shared the following story: Let me return to my theatrical metaphor to recount the experience of David O. McKay, a great spiritual leader and teacher who was a source of inspiration to me in my formative years. In the early years of the twentieth century David McKay found himself in Stirling, Scotland, one of the ancient seats of the Scottish kings. He was far from home, working among people who did not care about the things he was trying to teach them. He was cold, hungry, and discouraged, ready to give up. Walking down an old street of the town, he looked up to see an inscription carved in stone above a doorway: “What e'er thou art, act well thy part.” More than six decades later, after he had become a major spiritual and moral leader and near the end of a long life of service, I heard this man speak of his experience in Scotland. He talked about the abrupt change in perspective that the inscription over the doorway had given him at a critical time in his life. He had never thought that he was filling a role in his life. Something deep inside him responded to the admonition of the inscription, and reading it proved to be a turning point. It inspired him to do his utmost to accomplish his work in Scotland, and it continued to inspire him through a lifetime of service to others. Make a list of all the roles that you have and ask yourself how well you are performing in that role. Could you do better? Will you? Leave a comment and let me know what you think! Jeff

Today Nicholas shares his interview with Russell Brunson, ClickFunnels founder and host of Funnel Hacking Live. They talk about the opportunities that come with being a high-level influencer, how to be faith focused without judgment, and what responsibilities drove them both to their passions. Russell shares personal stories and experiences he’s had throughout his entrepreneurial journey, from family life, faith, to failing business and his health.   Timestamped Show Notes: [ 02:41 ] Social Media Influencing [ 06:44 ] Faith in Business [ 11:38 ] Balancing Mixed Views [ 14:54 ] Passion in the Hard Times [ 19:38 ] Responsibilities [ 23:48 ] Roadblocks [ 27:52 ] Lack of Support [ 35:30 ] Belief [ 38:29 ] Health Impacts all Areas [ 41:13 ] Failing [ 46:10 ] Funnel Hacking Live   Takeaways: “I'm not going to judge anyone else because I struggle with so many things in life.” Everyone's got their own thing and like all we need to care about in the faith side of businesses is how we can actually change people's lives. That is what business is all about that. It's not about making money. Most entrepreneurs when they start that's their motivation. However they don't last long, it's hard to stay in business because the motivation for money goes away really quick. It's the people who start serving other people, seeing some success and then seeing lives changed. You have to shift your focus to that service mentality. That's what faith is, it’s serving and helping other people. It doesn’t matter what sins any of us have, we all have issues. But when you know that your mission here is to change other people's lives, that's when entrepreneurs are able to have an effect. The biggest component to success is belief. Sometimes we may not know what our ideas or visions will look like but when you have a belief you know that no matter what those dreams will come to fruition and you will see success. When you have a belief you are able to inspire people to join you in that dream even when everyone around them is telling them to take a step back. I think that's the biggest thing is actually believing. I think when people get stuck is because they're, I think this will work and that that's why you, that's why you don't quite go all the way. It's where you don't quite finished the shot or do the thing or whatever it is because like I think, I think it'll work. You get to like absolute belief in the certainty that's going to work and then you do that. You just smashed through the thing. And so, um, that's, that's the biggest is just believe in like again, if I can give everyone, like, just believe this has worked, believe it's true believer you can, whatever it is. Like as soon as you believe it, everything becomes really, really easy. David Mckay said that no success can compensate for failure in the home. And so for me, I look at that. That's the root foundation of success is what your home looks like. So how do you treat your wife, how you treat your kids, how like what does that relationship looks like because you have success in the world's view, but if your home is destroyed then you know, what was the, what was the point of it? I'm looking at people who have amazing families who were married, who have good relations with their spouse or their kids, things like that because that's success for me.

Writing a book can benefit your business as well as benefit you as a topic expert. Learn how my guest David McKay was able to do just that. He and his wife Ally have built a successful photography company called McKay Photography where they offer classes and travel photography tours around the world. His bestselling book and speaking engagements have helped propel their business to successful levels. David is also the author of the  Photography Demystified book series. This is a great episode because we dive into how David used his books to build his company and business. We also learn about business, life, travel, and photography with this artistic photographer and successful businessman and author who has built his business on a local and international level.   You can find David here: McKay Photography Photography Classes Photography Tours Photography Demystified Books McKay Photography Academy Facebook McKay Photography Academy YouTube McKayLive Instagram   Show Notes [01:19] How everyone has a story within them. David's just happens to be about photography. Much more has come out of his writing than he had anticipated. [02:17] Once David makes a decision, he goes for it. The reason behind the first book was to help the business and residual income. [03:24] Chandler's step-by-step process was instrumental to David's success. [03:50] He went to a hotel room with a poster board and colored pencils and made a mind map and then started categorizing it. [04:33] He locked himself in and just went for it. The first book took just over two weeks. It took a half week to get on the bestseller list. [05:26] How setting the time aside was the big trick to David's success to getting everything done so fast. [06:12] After mind mapping and categorizing, he wrote down everything he could in each category and just started typing. [06:54] He thinks on a linear level, so this helped him stay on track. [09:34] David had developed an email list through his business, so he sent the list a notice asking if anyone would like to join the advance team and get a free copy of the book and leave a review. He ended up with 900 people. [10:57] He used followed up emails to encourage people to leave the reviews. He figured if people unsubscribed they weren't the target market. [11:41] Inviting the group to stay for the next book worked really well. He also left a special surprise for the first 50 reviewers. [12:47] He went to number one on free on Amazon. Then when he switched to paid, he also shot to number one. [13:35] He also sent the $1.99 promo to his entire list to catch the people who didn't take advantage of the free offer. [14:17] It took David four years to build his list traveling around the country teaching photography. [15:17] Then he started running contests giving a free trips on his tours. He also worked with a partner on YouTube. Partner with someone who is doing well. [16:13] After the contests his email lists went to 21,000 subscribers. [16:23] The cost isn't all recouped through the book, but the book is an avenue to get people to take the travel tours. [17:24] David evolves and changes with the market. Anyone can find a way to do it. He also reached out to manufacturers to sponsor contests. [18:29] The strength is in numbers. Partnering with people is a great way to get those numbers. [19:28] If the sponsor also emails the contest they too get to participate in the new email list. [20:41] It only takes one person to buy into the tour to pay for the contest prize. They booked two tours through the contest. [23:04] They are willing to work with anybody to get them on the tour. They also offer high and lower priced tours so anyone can do it. [24:09] There is a link in the book to free content for email subscribers. [25:36] They also participate in travel and adventure shows to advertise. [27:19] Old-fashioned advertising is dead. Things need to be done in new creative ways. [27:47] All of the different streams are leading back to the tours and classes. [31:30] His first residual check was $856.00 and then $400.00, $400.00, then $500.00. This is still worth the investment especially with the valuable back-end of the book and the email list. He is working on his third book, which he plans to hit hard with the advertising. [34:21] The power of leveraging local media and PR. [37:02] Going to libraries and get them to purchase your books. [37:47] For some people it is just a matter of taking a step. [38:51] The toughest part of writing the book was overthinking and being a perfectionist. His first editor was not one. Get a good editor. [41:51] Everyone has a story in them that will affect someone else.   Links and Resources: self-publishingschool.com Spsfreetraining.com McKay Photography Photography Classes Photography Tours Photography Demystified Books McKay Photography Academy Facebook McKay Photography Academy YouTube McKayLive Instagram

Burn Down the American Plantation For this episode, we are featuring a conversation that William had with some members of The Base, a social and political space in Brooklyn, about a book they co authored called Burn Down the American Plantation, which outlines a potential revolutionary praxis that coincides with the history and present of black liberation, radical self defense, building a revolutionary society, the formation of the Revolutionary Abolitionist Movement, and many other topics. This book is just out from AK Press, and a free pdf can be found at Revolutionary Abolition. Announcements: Oppose Islamophobia The Islamophobic right in the U.S. has called for a "National March Against Sharia" for June 10th with knuckledraggers in about 20 cities signed up to participate according to Proud Boy Magazine. Needless to say, there will be opportunities for those of us with enough brain power to realize that the U.S. is in no danger of EVER becoming a state run by Sharia law and that this is nothing but a poorly masked call to increase violence against our friends, neighbors and families of African and Asian descent and who also who may be Muslims.  If you plan to oppose the ACT! for America events in your area, check out the article on Antifascist News to find where the nearest to you will be.  It's suggested that if you are planning to attend, keep your identity safe, travel with friends, park away from the event and share emergency information with your buddies.  For those in Western North Carolina, Raleigh may be the nearest place of engagement. In the wake of continued violence by Islamophobic elements of the right, including the recent stabbing deaths of two and injury of a third antiracist who stepped up to try to stop the harassment of two women of color wearing headscarfs on Portland public transit, it's imperative for those who oppose bigotry in all of its forms and want to do something about it take care of ourselves and know how to fight back. Haymaker Popular Fitness and Self-Defense: podcast special release In this vein, stay tuned for our online release alongside this episode of our interview with organizers with the Haymaker Popular Fitness and Self-Defense gym project in Chicago.  Their indiegogo campaign is nearing it's end, so we wanted to help give it a little push and get them some more donations.  In the interview we spoke about building the muscles and self-confidence to fight off stranger attacks, as well as this project as an attempt to empower those struggling against intimate violence, we talk about queering workout spaces and concepts of violence.  To check out more about their fundraising and watch their demo video by finding their page on indiegogo.  This segment will become an episode in the near future. Also, check out this awesome benefit tape of country and folk music. Aaaaand, this awesome series of podcasts have been coming out from June 11th organizers about prisoners and prisoner support in the run up to J11 this year: Grace chats on Jeremy Hammond; Supporters on Eric King; Josh Harper on incarceration and prisoner support; CLE4 and Nicole & Joseph interview; Leslie James Pickering on J11 Queer Cafeteria: Know Your Host!
