You only learn when you fail.” “I need to be kind to myself because that actually makes me stronger. The world's hard enough—me being hard on myself isn't going to help the situation at all.” “No one remembers what the goal looks like. They remember the score of the game.” “No's are actually a good thing. Those no's are so important because, first of all, a no almost always is not a forever no—it's a no at the moment. And the other is that when they say no, that helps narrow the pool down for you. It gets you closer to knowing who your people are.” “Not all crazy ideas are good, but all good ideas are a little bit crazy.” “The more we can invest in ourselves, the more it gives us to invest in other people. Today, we're diving into a classic money book that has stood the test of time: *The Richest Man in Babylon* by George S. Clason. Written nearly 100 years ago, this book started as a series of pamphlets shared by financial institutions to help people understand wealth-building in an approachable way. Through timeless parables, this book shares practical financial advice wrapped in storytelling, making it an enjoyable and impactful read for generations. In this episode, we explored the key lessons, known as the “Seven Cures for a Lean Purse.” These principles are simple yet profound, starting with “paying yourself first” by saving 10% of your earnings and moving through lessons about controlling spending, making wise investments, and securing a future income. Each cure offers valuable guidance on how to manage, grow, and protect your wealth. One of the biggest takeaways is the importance of patience and consistency—wealth doesn't grow overnight, but through steady and intentional effort. As we reflect on *The Richest Man in Babylon*, it's clear that while some aspects of the book may feel dated, the financial wisdom it offers remains relevant. We live in a time with far more opportunities and resources for wealth creation, yet the foundational principles of saving, budgeting, and investing are still key. May this episode not only give you a glimpse into the book's teachings but also inspire you to implement these principles in your own journey! Contact: michel@moneylighthouse.com

When it comes to building wealth, it's easy to get discouraged when after years we don't seem to be any farther along than when we first started. We then jump to conclusions about ourselves with thoughts like, “I don't make enough”, “I can't afford to save”, or “I don't have enough time”. But surprisingly, building wealth has less to do with how much money you make and has more to do with how much you save. If you want to be wealthy, if you want to amass a fortune, I'm going to share a brief segment from a little parable you may have never heard before. It comes from the book, “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason. This book was first published in 1926 and it shares important financial principles in the form of parables set during the time of ancient Babylon. The first parable addresses how your perspective on the money you make and how you choose to use it determines whether you'll grow wealthy. Here goes: Arkad, known to be the richest man in Babylon, started as a humble scribe and now as an older man, owns a legendary fortune that rivaled even the very king. In the parable, Arkad speaks with a young man who wants to know the secret to building a fortune. Arkad responded by simply saying, “I found the road to wealth when I decided that a part of all I earned was mine to keep.” The young man was a bit confused at the short reply and responded, “Is that all? But all I earn is mine to keep.” Arkad replied, “Far from it. Do you not pay the garment maker? Do you not pay the sandal-maker? Do you not pay for the things you eat?... What have you to show for your earnings of the past month?... You pay to everyone but yourself. You labor for others.” This first exchange illuminates the reality that much of the money we earn is spent. Much of it goes to bills and necessities as well as other things we desire or want to experience. Arkad's first point is important because we need to recognize that when we're spending money, we're paying other people and that money isn't ours to keep. So what does that leave for us? How can we build wealth if we don't have any money to build wealth with? At this point, Arkad continues the lesson by saying, “Every gold piece you save is a slave to work for you. Every copper it earns is its child that also can earn for you. If you would become wealthy, then what you save must earn, and its children must earn...” Arkad sums his lesson up with this simple message. “A part of all you earn is yours to keep.... Pay yourself first.” Arkad's simple, yet profound advice, though fictional, is a simple strategy to building wealth over time. When we spend everything we make, we're contributing to making others rich rather than building our own wealth. We're paying everyone but ourselves. Faithfully set aside a portion of your income for yourself every time you get paid. Then, find a way to get that money to make more money. Use savings accounts like online savings, CDs, IRAs with good interest rates and talk to a financial professional to set up quality investment accounts that will get those dollars earning more in the background. Before closing I'll leave this final message from Arkad. He says, “Wealth like a tree, grows from a tiny seed. The first copper you save is the seed from which your tree of wealth shall grow. The sooner you plant that seed the sooner shall the tree grow. And the more faithfully you nourish and water that tree with consistent savings, the sooner may you bask in the contentment beneath its shade.” If there are any other tips or topics, you'd like us to cover, let us know at tcupodcast@trianglecu.org.

The Richest Man In BabylonThe Richest Man In Babylon Full Book Introduction Babylon, one of the four ancient civilizations, was a wealthy nation with countless gold and jewels but with limited natural resources. Its brilliance was entirely the result of human wisdom. The Richest Man in Babylon introduces ancient wisdom from 5,000 years ago and reveals how Babylon got rich. You will become enlightened about wealth and understand its most fundamental laws. These oldest and most effective laws of wealth can guide you from being penniless to success and happiness. Author : George S. ClasonGeorge S. Clason was a famous American financial master, businessman, and writer. He was the pioneer of modern wealth management education. Starting in 1926, Clason published a series of hugely popular wealth management pamphlets, using ancient Babylonian fables to illustrate his views on work and financial issues. The pamphlets caused a stir in the financial world and soon became familiar to millions of people. They were later published together in the book, The Richest Man in Babylon. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. The book we are unlocking today is The Richest Man in Babylon. In the annals of history, Babylon was no doubt a shining star. It had gold and jewels in abundance, and rich people could be found everywhere. You may think the wealth was due to its natural advantages, just as the wealth of the United Arab Emirates is related to its oil abundance today. On the contrary, Babylon was situated in a barren, arid valley near the Euphrates. The natural environment was extremely harsh. There was nothing of value, and it was not along any of the main trade route. Many wealthy Babylonians were not born rich, and Babylon's success was not a gift from heaven. The success was the result of the hard work based on the wisdom of the Babylonians through generations. As Babylonians, their priority was to learn how to become wealthy. The king of Babylon once ordered the establishment of a lecture hall that could hold 100 people, so that the richest man in Babylon, Arkad, could teach people the secrets of getting rich. Arkad shared all the lessons learned over the years and asked those in the lecture hall to pass those lessons on to others. Good things never go out of style, and these self-made ways of making money still work in today's world. In 1934, a couple of archaeology professors at the University of Nottingham translated the cuneiform script on five unearthed Babylonian clay tablets. By doing so, they learned the astonishing secret of how an ancient Babylonian slave paid off his debts. They tried out the method written on these tablets, and they not only paid off old debts, but also accumulated a considerable amount of savings. This ancient wisdom we just mentioned came from The Richest Man in Babylon. The book uses fables to narrate the path to success from some of Babylon's super-rich. The author of this book, George S. Clason, was a famous American businessman and writer in the 20th century. He once published the first road atlas of the United States and Canada, and had quite deep experience in the publishing industry. He was also a master of wealth management, known as the pioneer of modern wealth management education. Starting in 1926, Clason published a series of wealth management pamphlets, using ancient Babylonian fables to illustrate his views. The pamphlets caused a stir in the banking industry and the insurance industry. They soon became familiar to millions of people, and were later published together in the book, The Richest Man in...

Ever felt indebted to someone because they did something nice for you? Or felt like someone didn't do something nice for you in return? No worries, most of us do or feel that way at time… but there's a way to not do that any more. The law of tithing talks about how we will be blessed by obeying this law, but it does not say we will get back exactly what we gave, from the same people we gave to. It's more like, we give and we receive. It's not I give you and you give me… that's not how it works. When it comes to marriages… we almost always want back what we give from our spouses (“50/50”)… but that's not how it works here either. If you're married you probably know that. If we ever find ourselves feeling in lack of something, start giving more. As we give we receive… often times in just the joy of giving. But in general when we give, we never know how or when it will come back to us… but it will. It's the law. And reciprocity is not linear… keep that in mind. Give just to give, and give cheerfully. Ways in which we can give (cheerfully)… think back to times when someone gave you something you never forgot… that is one way in which you can also give: Remembering friends and those we love (b-days, anniversaries) Keeping in touch Giving compliments, for talents or unique abilities, etc. Acknowledging/giving praise for good deeds, talents, etc Sharing of your talents (cards, cooking, flowers from your garden, teaching a special skill) Showing gratitude/appreciation for deeds done for you, or for gifts received Not expecting/demanding reciprocity Not comparing (he does so much for his wife, her children show more love) Inspiring others by being more positive and less critical Resources featured in this episode: The Richest Man In Babylon by George S. Being financially smart is less about intelligence and more about having a plan and being disciplined. I think being a rocket scientist verse running a marathon is a good comparison. Having a high financial IQ is more akin to preparing for a marathon than being a super intelligent person. Not everyone is going to have the intelligence necessary to be a rocket scientist, but I think just about anyone can get to the point where they can finish a marathon. It might take years to get there, but if you have the desire and discipline, almost anyone can run a marathon. Anyone with the desire and discipline can be financially smart and gain financial freedom can do it, but in almost every case it will take a good portion of your lifetime to get there. In this episode Craig and I are going to cover steps anyone can take to be financially smart and eventually gain financial freedom. What To Expect From Episode 125 One of the first books I ever read that had a big impact on my financial IQ is an older book called, "The Richest Man in Babylon" by George S. Clason. It's a great book, that teaches simple financial principles that are easy to understand and he does it in an entertaining way. You can learn more about it by clicking here. If you've ever found yourself not being happy with your current life, or areas of your life, and you have wondered... “What can I do about my current situation?” This is for you. Or if you're like I was… do you even know to ask yourself the right questions? I didn't know I had options in my life! Too many of us feel we're… Not educated enough… a lot of people think this · Feel trapped, maybe financially · See no options to take · Have physical/health challenges · Can't drive · Live in a small town Not tech savvy · I can't afford it · I don't have the time · Too focused on not knowing the “HOW” · Feeling we're too old… this is only because we compare ourselves to where others are Know that having a true DESIRE to do something is PROOF that you have within you what you need to accomplish it. The question is are you REALLY READY?? Next question is, are you WILLING to start taking action… ALIGHNED action The things our brain comes up with also keep us from taking risks and are ENDLESS, but they're just STORIES… don't listen to everything your brain tells you! Today's episode was inspired by the book As a Man Thinketh, by Allen James – Good or bad thoughts, we manifest what we think about… until we are ready to think on purpose of what we want to create. “A man is literally what he thinks… his character being the complete SUM of all his thoughts. Act is the blossom of thought… and JOY & SUFFERING are its fruits.” Man is made or unmade by himself… in the armory of thought he forges the weapons by which he destroys himself.” “He also fashions the tools with which he BUILDS himself heavenly mansions of joy and strength, and peace.” Read this book right now. The Richest Man in Babylon Book NotesMore Content On Bookey Book Summary App Babylon, one of the four ancient civilizations, was a wealthy nation with countless gold and jewels but with limited natural resources. Arkad shared all the lessons learned over the years and asked those in the lecture hall to pass those lessons on to others.Good things never go out of style, and these self-made ways of making money still work in today's world. The book uses fables to narrate the path to success from some of Babylon's super-rich.The author of this book, George S. They soon became familiar to millions of people, and were later published together in the book, The Richest Man in Babylon. The book has been translated into many languages and still sells well today.
