Three time Ms. Noir City Audra Wolfmann joins us once again to look at some of the strangest Westerns ever produced by Hollywood. Both of these films have surprisingly feminist themes while being directed by two of the studio system's true iconoclasts. First, Joan Crawford as saloon keeper Vienna is pitted against Mercedes McCambridge as the sexually-frustrated matriarch Emma Small in JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) for control of an Arizona town, and its two most eligible bachelors: The Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden). Vienna has had both of them, which Emma has had none, but Emma appears to be more attracted to her feminine rival judging by the intensity of her rages whenever she's around Vienna. Directed by Nicholas Ray, whose best-known film, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), also concerns a love triangle that doesn't conform to the gender norms of the time. Also starring Ernest Borgnine, Ward Bond, and John Carradine, and filmed in striking Trucolor by Henry A. Stradling (Hitchcock's SUSPICION; A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE). Next, Barbara Stanwyck is the "high ridin' woman with a whip in director Sam Fuller's utterly bizarre FORTY GUNS (1957), a movie as obsessed with dicks as its title would suggest. Three very Earp like brothers played by Barry Sullivan, Gene Barry, and Robert Dix (they couldn't find another Barry?) ride into Cochise County, Arizona and are immediately confronted by the movie's titular 40 guns. Stanwyck is Jessica Drummond, who rules the territory with lead and leather. Incredible camera work here by Fuller and cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc (THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN). We discussed Fuller previously way back in our Dark AF episode (S1E7) with THE NAKED KISS (1964). FORTY GUNS also stars Dean Jagger, Elvis' milquetoast dad from KING CREOLE (S2E10), as the milquetoast sheriff. We also ask all the hard questions like why Lady Gaga doesn't want to call the musical JOKER sequel a musical? The answer may surprise you. And please give us good reviews on Apple Podcasts. We could use em. Please check out Audra's amazing podcasts: SPEAKEASILY VS. Ian and Don saddle up and head West for a revealing look at Howard Hawks' Rio Bravo!Yes, this is a John Wayne movie, but the 1959 epic about outnumbered lawmen in a small town beset by hired killers is as much a showcase for its supporting talent as it is for the Duke! Angie Dickinson makes her big screen debut as a traveling con artist who falls for the top-billed stoic lawman; Dean Martin co-stars as Wayne's alcoholic former deputy; and teen heartthrob Ricky Nelson shows up as an utterly mesmerizing cross between a wet-behind-the-ears Elvis Presley and Han Solo!In this spoiler-filled review, the guys dig into their history with Westerns and revel in the ideas and delivery that set Rio Bravo apart--including its unexpectedly stark look at the ravages of addiction. They also make the case for Rio Bravo as a great companion piece to Barbie; appreciate character actor extraordinaire Ward Bond; and explore the wonderful world of the "Free Blockbuster" movement!Show LinksWatch the Rio Bravo trailer.Order Rio Bravo on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, now available from Warner Bros. Growing up in South Africa, Sue Phillips loved theatre and, ultimately, love of theatre took her to New York City. While still hoping for work in the theatre, someone suggested that she go into the cosmetics/cosmetics training field because of her ability to stand in front of audiences and speak. Taking that path, Sue would become the national training director for Elizabeth Arden where she learned about fragrance. Six years later, Lancôme hired Sue as marketing director for fragrance and men's skincare. From there, she was hired by Tiffany & Co. as the vice president of marketing where she developed and launched the first Tiffany perfume! With Sue's fragrance experience, she launched her own fragrance company called, “Scenterprises” and authored “The Power of Perfume.” I recently found out about Sue and her work, even helping individuals who lost their sense of smell, on Dr. Ward Bond's program. I asked Sue if she would join me to share her effort as well as her work with those trying to regain their sense of smell and her passion for those living with Alzheimer's and Sue is joining me tonight!

This radio adaptation of Director, John Ford's 1948 film features John Wayne and Ward Bond re-creating their roles in the film. What was unique about the story is that it is one of the first westerns that treated Native Americans with sympathy and respect. Captain York (John Wayne) is all about treating Cochise (Apache leader) with truthfulness and respect, while is commanding officer is much more aggressive and itching for a confrontation. Despite York's advice, the Colonel makes the decision to attack Cochise and his warriors... and the ending is rather depressing. However, it is a significant story for 1948 in the way that it sends the message that the Native Americans had not been treated well and the policy of the US Government needed to be evaluated and changed. This story will be kept in the "Western" Playlist on this podcast.
It's our first International podcast, and this week we welcome back our buddy Dave who completes our coverage of North America. We talk about Canadian coronavirus, Danny's memory foam fetish and of course, Lori Laughlin's sentencing.

We all get an itchy scalp from time to time, but imagine a burning, painful sensation (similar to a sunburn on your scalp) that never goes away.We all get an itchy scalp from time to time, but imagine a burning, painful sensation (similar to a sunburn on your scalp) that never goes away. It's a condition referred to as burning scalp syndrome.Unfortunately, many doctors have a hard time diagnosing (and thus treating) the condition, leaving sufferers frustrated and at their wits' end. Symptoms include burning, itching, scalp sensitivity, pain when combing/brushing/styling, and may even result in hair loss.Causes of Burning Scalp SyndromeThe number-one cause of burning scalp syndrome is chronic stress, whether from daily stressors or anxiety, depression, and even recovering from an injury. A neuropeptide called Substance P is the culprit. Substance P is the key "first responder" to stresses in your life. When stress becomes chronic, Substance P builds up and becomes too excessive for your body to handle. Aside from burning scalp syndrome, other issues such as restless leg syndrome, digestive woes, vaginal discomfort, hives for no reason, and even conditions such as fibromyalgia can all be caused by excessive amounts of Substance P.Treatment OptionsAfter studying the syndrome, Dr. Ward Bond has come up with certain protocols to address it.Your diet is extremely important. Eat as naturally as possible and stay away from artificial ingredients and bad fats. Good fats have been found to bring relief to some patients, particularly flax oil and borage oil.Magnesium is crucial as well. Low magnesium levels enable excess Substance P to respond. Dr. Bond prefers the Natural Vitality brand Natural Calm and advises to take it in morning and again in the evening. You can also ingest cayenne internally. This tricks the nervous system into thinking an injury has occurred, but triggers the release of excess substance P. Quercetin removes Substance P from the nervous system as well, and is also a natural antihistamine. Acetyl L-Carnitine gets the left and right sides of the brain to communicate more efficiently and also reduces Substance P levels. This improves focus and optimizes release of serotonin and dopamine.Regular exercise and stretching can also be beneficial, as well as focusing on the good in your life.Listen in as Dr. Bond joins hosts Andrea and Lisa to share information on burning scalp syndrome, the other health concerns associated with excess Substance P, and how you can use nutrition to address your symptoms.

Warner Bros. released Hondo to theaters on November 27, 1953. John Farrow directs the film which stars John Wayne, Geraldine Page, and Ward Bond. The post Hondo (1953) appeared first on Movie House Memories.
Ida Lupino helmed the director’s chair for three days while primary director Nicholas Ray was ill. Ida Lupino is our “Director Of The Month” and she also turns in an excellent performance as a nearly blind woman trying her best to protect her younger brother. Robert Ryan plays Jim Wilson, a city detective at the end of his rope. Jim Wilson’s Captain, played by Ed Begley, sends Jim to a small town in the mountains to help solve a murder and as a way to keep Jim out of trouble that he’s in for beating up suspects in the city. Through the course of the investigation, Mary and Jim fall in love and find redemption in their lives. As does the young victim’s father played by Ward Bond. All of the lead cast is excellent and the music by Bernard Herrmann perfectly compliments the amazing cinematography by George E. Diskant. We highly recommend this movie!
