GRQOTW 1010: Barney the B Grade golfer hits his approach shot into a green side bunker on the short 15th hole of the very prestigious golf club at Wombat Hills. The ball is in the middle of a large collection of temporary water in the middle of the bunker. As the only relief area in the bunker would put the ball in a very difficult position on a slope, Barney decides to take BOL relief outside of the bunker. After making this decision, Barney walks into the bunker to retrieve his ball. In doing so, he creates footprints. Barney retrieves a rake and smooths the footprints, and then correctly drops his ball outside the bunker…but instead of using BOL relief, he has changed his mind and has now taken S&D relief, from a distance fairly close to where BOL relief would have put him. Before playing his shot, Barney notices that the raked footprints are in his line of play for the short shot over the bunker to the hole that was a mere 6 feet onto the front of the green. After playing his shot, how many total penalty strokes has Barney incurred? GOLFRULES QUESTIONS MERCHANDISE Get yourself a Roo&Coo polo: https://golfrulesquestions.myspreadshop.com/ . We get into those questions and much more with my guests: Hall of Fame Instructor Jim McLean, former Tour Player and all-time great Analyst Frank Nobilo, the Starter at 23 US Opens Ron Read, and PGA Tour Advance Rules Official Stephen Cox. Jim McLean has been inducted into 4 Hall of Fames. His list of awards and accolades as an Instructor are too numerous to list. I get Jim's thoughts on how we can build confidence in ourselves and our game's, how to raise our play to tournament level, and the one thing we can do today to lower our scores this weekend. Frank Nobilo won 14 times around the world, he finished in the Top 10 of all 4 majors, and is now an all-time great Analyst. We discuss why PGA Tour players are overpaid, what could happen if the PIF/PGA Tour partnership doesn't go through plus, we go back to his T4 finish in the 1994 US Open at Oakmont, and what it was like being on the course at Augusta National as Greg Norman was collapsing in 1996. Ron Reed worked for the USGA for over two decades and was the Starter at the US Open from 1986 to 2010. We hear his memories of announcing Arnold Palmer in Arnie's final US Open at Oakmont in 1994, who Ron thought was the most nervous player he ever saw standing on the first tee (his answer will surprise you), being there for Payne Stewart's triumph in 1999 and Phil's heartbreak in 2006. You'll also hear the heartwarming story of presenting Tom Watson's caddie Bruce Edwards with the flag from the 17th green from the 1982 US Open. We also get the story of the beaver who halted the 1990 US Amateur Public Links tournament. Follow Ron on Twitter @golfdinosaurrr and get his book, Starting the US Open, Shinnecock to Pebble Beach online at www.ronread.com or on Amazon. Stephen Cox has been a PGA Tour Rules Official since 1997. We hear about some of the unpopular rulings he's had to give out over the years and the players who didn't agree with him. We learn about the job the Rules Officials do which goes way beyond riding around in a golf cart handing out penalties. They are responsible for course setup and playing conditions and sometimes they are working on those things a year in advance of the tournament. We also discuss the rule he thinks the USGA & R&A need to take another look at. You can follow Stephen and his peers plus send them your rules questions on Twitter @pgatourrules.

Joining us on the couch today is one of the the PGA TOUR's most trusted employees, and a true student of the rules of golf, Mr. Stephen Cox. For the last 15 years, Cox has served as a rules official at the highest level in the game, and in this episode we dive-in to slow play, some of golfs unwritten rules, player fines, and a few war stories from Matt and Aron's time on tour.  In fact, Every shares a  little history with Stephen, and we get a couple of gems from their run-ins on and off the course! While umpires and referees are sometimes the punching bags for the professionals in other sports, Stephen's role serves to protect not just the player, but the entire field of play. Their hours are ridiculous during tournament play, and we truly respect the jobs that all officials perform for all the tours. We really enjoyed this one, and we hope you do too!Link from this episode:Connect with Stephen: Stephen CoxIf you like living forever, and you like golf, then you're going to LOVE Live Forever Golf.Enter discount code "LFG20" for 20% off your next order at LiveForeverGolf.comStraight Down the Middle'ish is brought to you by Live Forever Golf. On this weeks episode Joe and I teamed up with Stephen Cox and recorded a killer episode. Stephen is an owner operator field tech that works on pretty much everything and makes great YouTube videos of some of the work he does, tips and tricks etc. On this episode Stephen gives a great run down of his history and we cover quite a few topics throughout his story and we ended up running out of time on this episode so we will definitely be recording a part two! Check out the links below for the Certified Wrench Podcast- check out the march line, like and subscribe to our social media page and YouTube and give us a review on whatever streaming platform your listening to us on!Certified Wrench Podcast- https://linktr.ee/CertifiedwrenchStepthen Cox- https://www.youtube.com/@StephenCoxChannel/featured

Today I have a special guest and friend who's been through an IPO and sold his last company to Microsoft.Stephen Cox created his first success as an early employee at PurchasePro, a B2B eCommerce platform, which went public in 1999. Steven followed that up by building TakeLessons, an online music lessons platform to help other musicians and educators connect with students in person and online. Steven, his team and his investors did not find instant success with Take Lessons, but they never gave up.And 14 years later, having raised 19 million from 14 different investors in three rounds, his company TakeLessons became one of the largest live educational sites on the web and was purchased by Microsoft in 2021. Steven Cox shares how he was able to earn, in his words, the emotional equity to convince his board to increase the equity share for some key employees and co-founders of TakeLessons who are not only instrumental in building the take lessons business, but who are critical in making the sale to Microsoft happen.Today's episode is for founders who may find themselves needing to ask investors and their board for a bigger piece of the pie for key employees or themselves to get everyone aligned around the sale of a business.  I hope you enjoy my conversation with Steven Cox. ------------------------------------------------------------------------This episode is brought to you by Exitwise:  https://www.exitwise.comExitwise helps business owners create the exits they deserve by assembling the best teams of industry specific, M&A experts, who will help maximize the sale of each business. How Does It Work:1. Schedule A Call:  Schedule a call with one of our M&A Advisors and we'll walk you through the entire process of selling your business, from market valuations to M&A expert fees and from due diligence to the signing of your purchase agreement. We're here to answer any questions you may have.On this call, we'll want to learn about the history of the business, your financial performance, your management team and listen to your thoughts and requirements for selling the business so we can make sure to find the best M&A experts to help maximize your exit.2. Review Top Experts:  Once we've had a chance to process all your business information, we'll share with you, our top choices for investment bankers, M&A attorneys, and tax accountants to help maximize the sale of your business. We'll present each M&A expert's transaction history, estimated valuation range for your business and their fee structures. Then we'll talk through the pros and cons of each choice to help you prioritize and make the best decisions.3. Negotiate & Hire:  Finally, when we've narrowed it down to your top choices, we'll negotiate your engagement letter with each M&A expert to make sure fees and terms are fair for everyone. We know what to look for and we know how to keep everyone incentivized for your optimal outcome.Once your M&A experts have been selected and you're ready to move forward, we'll collect signatures and get everyone to work.
