Happy New Year! Shoot off the fireworks, toot the noisemakers, and make yourself a nice plate of black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread. Do you have any resolutions this year? A word or mantra for the year? No? Well, you're in luck. We're here to help with that by way of four movie recommendations. Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986)First up is the 1986 John Hughes comedy classic, Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The real righteous dudes in the audience will know why this film has a great movie mantra, but if you don't, you're in luck! We'll tell you all about it in today's show. Galaxy Quest (1999)Next is the 1999 love letter to Star Trek, Galaxy Quest. This comedy is a wonderful send-up of classic Star Trek, but is also a fascinating meta-commentary on stardom, fandom, and geek culture. By Grabthar's Hammer, you best pick this one up for another fantastic movie mantra. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)Frank Capra's 1946 film, It's a Wonderful Life, is a timeless Christmas classic, but it's got one of the best movie mantras in history. Starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Henry Travers, and Lionel Barrymore, this drama still rings true today and is worth watching as we start the new year. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (1989)We close our movie mantras this week with another comedy, 1989's Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. While yes, the tagline reads, “History's about to be rewritten by two guys who can't spell,” this is a comedy that still writes a wonderful movie mantra. Filled with cameos from comedians, rock stars, and more, Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure is a delightful sci-fi comedy. Strange things will be afoot at the Video Store if you don't pick this one up. From all of us here at the Video Store Podcast, we hope your new year is a great one. Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. Send us a textKatie and Bridget run through the town screaming MERRY CHRISTMAS as they re-watch the heartfelt classic: It's a Wonderful Life! It's a timeless (NO SERIOUSLY EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED IN THIS MOVIE IS APPARENTLY HAPPENING NOW WTFFFFF) - ahem - story that teaches us that when you're not an asshole, people will show up for you! Come along as we meet George Bailey, a sassy hard-of-hearing man who gets handed a lot of seemingly crap deals in life... Except for his wife Mary! She's the best and is basically awesome in this timeline as well as the one where George doesn't exist. When George gets to the end of his rope, an angel named Clarence comes in to remind him that he's got a great life and needs to just CHILL OUT and STOP YELLING AT THE TEACHERS PLEASE! With a little help from his family, friends, neighbors, and God/someone named Joseph, George learns that he's going to jail! Isn't it wonderful!? Just kidding - he learns to appreciate his life as well as learns how beneficial websites like GoFundMe are! Released in 1946, it stars James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Thomas Mitchell, and Henry Travers.

In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. EPISODE 23 - “I Coulda Been a Contender: Classic Casting That Almost Happened” - 02/19/2024 It is well documented that the film “Gone With The Wind” started filming before an actress was cast in the lead role of Scarlett O'Hara. Producer DAVID O. SELZNICK made a spectacle out of who would win the coveted role. It became a national obsession. He considered everyone from TALLULAH BANKHEAD to BETTE DAVIS to LUCILLE BALL. He eventually narrowed the field to three finalists: PAULETTE GODDARD, JOAN BENNETT, and JEAN ARTHUR. But in the eleventh hour, a new contender, an unknown Brit named VIVIEN LEIGH, swept in and won the role. MERRY CHRISTMAS! It's that one and only day. Seems like people are mad as hell leading up to this day and can't drive for shit but once the day gets here then it all feels all right. We culminate in our theme of THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR with this ultimate Christmas Classic. Some might say that having this movie as your favorite Christmas movie is perhaps typical. Cliche. But it's much more typical to proclaim it as typical because this is one of the most anti-cynical movies ever made. It wasn't even a hit in its time. Not until around the 70s did it truly become iconic holiday fare. It's a heavy hitter that stands the test of time for a reason. Of course, we're talking about Frank Capra's 1946 classic “It's A Wonderful Life” starring Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore & Henry Travers. Bob & Angela actually saw it in the theater as is the annual tradition of the Belcourt to show it during this time every year. There's not much more you can say about it (we still say a lot) but maybe we can inspire you to relive it if it's been a minute. Y'know we get choked up. Merry Christmas and a Happy New year. On the tenth episode of All the Film Things I am joined by my good friends, Cole Echevarria and Joshua Smith, to celebrate the holiday season by talking about Frank Capra's 1946 Christmas classic It's a Wonderful Life. This episode is spoiler- filled. Not only is this episode on a Christmas- focused film, this episode has a very Christmas-y feel. The holiday season is a time where friends and family come together. In enjoying each other's company, family and friends share meaningful moments, deep conversations, and maybe a dispute or two. This episode has all of that. The three of us analyze the film while discussing the deep themes... with some minor arguments throughout. It's a Wonderful Life is a fantasy, comedy film in which James Stewart plays the main character, George Bailey, a man with aspirations of seeing the world outside his hometown building skyscrapers and becoming wealthy. His big dreams are continuously put aside to allow him to help others which often, by extension, positively impacts the entire community of his hometown, Bedford Falls. His impact on so many people isn't realized until towards the end of the film, thanks to his guardian angel. It's a Wonderful Life was surprisingly not a success at the time of its release but has over time it has become regarded as one of the most widely celebrated Christmas films of all time. The film also stars Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, and Gloria Grahame. Cole is back for his third appearance on this wide release of All the Film Things, making this his 14th appearance in total. This is Joshua's fifth time on ATFT. Joshua was the one to suggest we talk about this film, since it's his favorite. I then asked Cole which he preferred of the two options (this film or Home Alone) and he agreed with Joshua. This was my first time watching It's a Wonderful Life in its entirety. Joshua has been watching this film since he was a kid while Cole had only seen it twice. They both regard It's a Wonderful Life as their favorite Christmas film. This episode was recorded on December 8, 2023. In this episode, between the banter, we go through the film beginning to end discussing the admirable qualities of George Bailey, trying to better understand certain moments, and much more! Cole shares his personal connections to the film and why the film resonates with him deeply. I made a film comparison that is teased by both Cole and Joshua throughout this episode. In which the Mister and the Monsters join me in reviewing IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946), based on a story by Philip Van Doren Stern, screenplay by Frances Goodrich, Albert Hackett, Jo Swerling, Michael Wilson and Frank Capra (who also directs): the story follows the life of George Baily (James Stewart), a long time resident of quaint Bedford Falls, who's only dream in life has been to shake the dusty of his crummy little hometown and see the world. As is prone to happen, those plans get put on the backburner, over and over and culm inate in a night of crisis when George contemplates a decision that will forever change things. Will there be anyone to save him, a person who's saved Bedford Falls and its citizens over and over. Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore, Henry Travers, Thomas Mitchell, Todd Karns, Beulah Bondi are just some of the fine actors behind the production. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime in a black and white and colorized version. Please note there are SPOILERS in this review. This week we’re ruining the economy, yelling at our children, forcefeeding someone the moon, but still having a very merry Christmas, all while discussing the ultimate Christmas movie that isn’t at all about Christmas - ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’. It's a Wonderful Life is a 1946 American Christmas fantasy drama film produced and directed by Frank Capra, based on the short story and booklet The Greatest Gift, which Philip Van Doren Stern wrote in 1939 and published privately in 1943.[4] The film is one of the most beloved in American cinema, and has become traditional viewing during the Christmas season. The film stars James Stewart as George Bailey, a man who has given up his dreams to help others, and whose imminent suicide on Christmas Eve brings about the intervention of his guardian angel, Clarence Odbody (Henry Travers). Clarence shows George all the lives he has touched, and how different life in his community of Bedford Falls would be if he had never been born. While not his first American film, Shadow of a Doubt is arguably Hitchcock’s first “American” film--his first look at the darkness that lies just beneath the surface of an All-American city. And he begins populating his background with some of his wonderful eccentrics, in this case being Hume Cronyn and Henry Travers and their endless discussions about how to perfectly murder each other. And “Our Town”? Thornton Wilder both contributed to the screenplay as well as getting a special acknowledgment for his assistance.
