Mark Perry discusses the bizarre case of the Stryker, a vehicle used by the U.S. army to transport infantry troops to the battlefield. The Stryker, Perry explains, is a deathtrap: it isn't heavily armored enough to stand up to real combat, it rolls over easily and it can't withstand IEDs or tank rounds. What's more, everyone seems to know this. And yet the Pentagon is spending nearly a billion dollars on a new contract, not to give the Stryker better armor, but to put machine guns on it. Perry describes this as putting a tourniquet on the wrong part of the body, and is emblematic of the kind of wasteful spending that has been draining America's treasury and putting lives at risk for decades. Discussed on the show: "The Stryker is a 'deathtrap' but you're paying for it anyway" (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft) "The Outpost (2019)" (IMDb) "The Pentagon Wars (TV Movie 1998)" (IMDb) Mark Perry is the author of Talking to Terrorists: Why America Must Engage with its Enemies, The Most Dangerous Man in America: The Making of Douglas MacArthur, and The Pentagon's Wars. Scott and Matthew Hoh have a wide-ranging conversation about America's war on terrorism. The latest news is that the U.S. troop withdrawal from Afghanistan is essentially complete, with the exception of a small number of soldiers, contractors and CIA operatives ostensibly remaining behind for diplomatic purposes. Hoh is optimistic about the possibility of the American military really being finished with Afghanistan now, though he and Scott both fear that the resulting instability could be used as an excuse to lobby for continued intervention. Hoh also discusses veteran suicide rates from the post-9/11 wars, which have surged way beyond those of the general population in recent years. Discussed on the show: "High Suicide Rates among United States Service Members and Veterans of the Post-9/11 Wars" (Cost of War Project) "The Redirection" (The New Yorker) No Good Men Among the Living: America, the Taliban, and the War through Afghan Eyes "Mike Gravel and An Ongoing Road to Courage" (CounterPunch.org) The Pentagon Papers Matthew Hoh is a senior fellow at the Center for International Policy and formerly worked for the U.S. State Department. Phil Weiss comes back on the show to talk about Israel-Palestine. Now that Netanyahu has been ousted, Weiss is hopeful about the Biden administration's ability to work with Israel's new coalition government on issues like settlements and the Iran nuclear deal. Although Israel's new prime minister, Naftali Bennett, is possibly even further to the right than Netanyahu, he is working closely with centrist Yair Lapid and, for the first time ever, with an Arab party in the Knesset. Weiss is also optimistic about the international community: the Israelis have gone too far, he thinks, in "establishing facts on the ground"—in other words, everyone can see that the two-state solution is dead, and the Israeli government is nakedly presiding over an apartheid regime. Discussed on the show: "Israel is ‘considerably weakened' — as BDS finds a home in the Democratic Party" (Mondoweiss) "Biden won't make Obama's mistake — so there will be ‘no daylight' between U.S. and Israel" (Mondoweiss) "Israeli Authorities and the Crimes of Apartheid and Persecution" (Human Rights Watch) Philip Weiss is the long-time editor of Mondoweiss.net. Max Blumenthal tells the shocking story of a recent lawsuit filed against the Grayzone by heiress Sulome Anderson, who alleged that she was slandered as a hack journalist by Blumenthal's outlet. Blumenthal readily admits that they have criticized Anderson's work, but insists that every criticism was legitimate—Anderson has a long track record of shoddy journalism, from accidental errors to outright fabrications. And the judge in this case agreed that there was nothing slanderous about what was said of her. That hasn't stopped Anderson from continuing to make wild claims of victimhood on the internet, and it hasn't stopped people like Jake Tapper from publicly championing Anderson's case. The real motive behind all this, says Blumenthal, is to destroy the Grayzone because it tells the truth about the American empire. Discussed on the show: "Judge tosses frivolous lawsuit by heiress Sulome Anderson seeking to destroy The Grayzone" (The Grayzone) Director and writer of “Killing Gaza,” Max Blumenthal is a senior editor of the Grayzone Project and the author Goliath, Republican Gomorrah and The 51 Day War. Scott interviews James Carden, Adviser to The American Committee for US-Russia Accord, about relations between Russia and the European Union. In recent years, Carden explains, some EU states have shown themselves unwilling to even sit down to cordial negotiations with Russia, who has been getting a reputation—largely thanks to Western media—for aggressive territorial expansion. This depiction could hardly be further from the truth. With the exception of Russia's annexation of Crimea, which was mostly peaceful and explicitly called for by the residents of that region, Russia has shown no indications of hegemonic designs on Eastern Europe. If anything, it's the United States and some of its European allies that have been trying to expand into Russian territory by bringing more and more Eastern nations into NATO. Since the Soviet Union collapsed, this project is utterly pointless—and it's also extremely dangerous. America ought to be careful that it doesn't cross any Russian red lines, the only resolution to which would be all-out war. Discussed on the show: "Why Ostpolitik with Russia runs along East-West Euro Divide" (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft) "Opinion | The Strange Death of Liberal Russophobia" (The New York Times) "Nyet Means Nyet" (WikiLeaks) James Carden is the executive editor for the American Committee for East-West Accord and former adviser on Russia policy at the US State Department. Nasser Arrabyee comes on the show for an update about Yemen. There seems to be some promise of a real peace negotiation, Arrabyee says, though it's hard to get both sides to see eye to eye on the realities of the situation. The Houthis, as Arrabyee explains, feel they can negotiate from a place of strength, since they have controlled most of the country for the last few years. They are demanding that Saudi Arabia lift the blockade as a condition of sitting down to peace talks. Saudi Arabia, on the other hand, has tried to make demands of their own, since they are on the side of the nominal government and are allied with the U.S. Arrabyee and Scott agree that one of the key factors in pushing a peaceful end to this war across the finish line is American peace activists putting pressure on their politicians, such that Saudi Arabia no longer has strong U.S. support, and must end its unjust persecution of the Yemenis. Discussed on the show: “End of Yemen quagmire? Saudi-led coalition, Houthis near peace deal” (Reuters) “Saudi-Led Coalition, Yemen's Houthis Working on Peace Deal” (News From Antiwar.com) The War Nerd on Twitter Nasser Arrabyee is a Yemeni journalist based in Sana'a, Yemen. This side of modern warfare often goes undiscussed, but it is every bit as concerning as the physical injuries that soldiers sustain overseas. Discussed on the show: “High Suicide Rates among United States Service Members and Veterans of the Post-9/11 Wars” (Cost of War Project) “Poll: 42 percent of Americans think the US is winning the ‘war on terror'” (Military Times) Ben Suitt is the author of “Finding Resonance Amid Trauma: Moral Injury and the Role of Religion Among Christian Post-9/11 U.S. Veterans.” A recent graduate of Boston University, Dr. Suitt's research investigates the role of religion in the lives of US military veterans as they navigate between competing identities and cultures amid the disruptive experiences of war and trauma. Scott interviews Doug Bandow about the U.S. relationship to Ukraine, perhaps the perfect case study in America's foreign policy arrogance. Ukraine, of course, has very little direct strategic relevance to daily life in America—and yet the U.S. government considers Ukraine one of its closest allies. In practice, what this means is that the United States would have to be prepared to go to war with Russia on Ukraine's behalf, if there were a sufficiently severe provocation. But as Bandow points out, this is an absolutely crazy policy: Russia, remember, has nuclear weapons, and any war between nuclear-armed countries would at some point be liable to go nuclear. And so when it comes down to it, the American government is potentially risking human life on planet earth over a single alliance with a small country halfway around the world. Ted Carpenter discusses the harmful effects of drug prohibition in America, both at home and abroad. First of all, he points out, prohibition simply doesn't work. We learned this during alcohol prohibition, when consumption remained high but prices and violence skyrocketed, and we continue to see it now, with ubiquitous street drugs, gang violence and millions of people in prison for nonviolent crimes. The public health problem of drug use is very real, Carpenter readily concedes, but that doesn't in any way imply that the answer is to use the police force and the penal system to try to solve it. In fact, countries like Portugal provide case studies in the ways that decriminalization can lead to lower levels of drug use and far lower levels of the secondary problems caused not by drug use per se, but by the fact that drugs are made to be black market commodities: turf wars, violent crime, dangerously adulterated supplies and police abuse. The failed war on drugs, he says, has had even further-ranging consequences, including being responsible, in large part, for America's immigration crisis. Discussed on the show: NATO: Dangerous Dinosaur "Bloodbath in Mexico: Another gift of US drug and drone wars" (Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft) Ted Galen Carpenter is a senior fellow for defense and foreign policy studies at the Cato Institute. Carpenter has written 10 books including America's Coming War with China: A Collision Course over Taiwan and most recently NATO: Dangerous Dinosaur. Kalmen Barkin is back for an update on Israeli politics. Naftali Bennett has just taken over as Israel's prime minister, following Benjamin Netanyahu's failure to successfully form a coalition government. Bennett, explains Barkin, is quite far on the right, yet he and Netanyahu are bitter rivals—indeed, Barkin says, this whole election was less about specific policy issues than it was about mutual desire to oust Netanyahu. And so the new ruling coalition has elements from both the left and the right, and, for the first time, Arabs. Mainstream Israeli political parties have traditionally refused to work with the Arabs, even when it would have given them a political edge. Whether the Arab party working with Bennett in the new government will be able to successfully advocate for Palestinians in Israel and the occupied territories remains to be seen. Scott talks to William Hartung about America's nuclear policy and the shocking profit motives that end up determining it. Hartung draws particular attention to land-based ICBMs, which, he explains, aren't nearly as effective, since they're fixed in one place, and for that same reason are especially vulnerable to the possibility of an accidental launch. When a country's government thinks their missile silos are being attacked, they have very little time to decide whether to launch those missiles in a counter-strike before losing the opportunity forever. This is why cutting back on ICBMs is one of the most important steps in reducing the risk of nuclear war. Unfortunately, leading voices in the U.S. government actually want to expand the nuclear arsenal, and since the money for such programs is often spread out in local political districts, opposition can be nearly impossible. Discussed on the show: "Inside the ICBM Lobby: Special Interests Or the National Interest?" Scott interviews Ray McGovern about the Biden-Putin summit. It was not exactly a groundbreaking meeting, says McGovern, though Biden and Putin did agree on at least one crucial point: America and Russia must never fight a nuclear war, since the results would be beyond catastrophic. It used to be the case, McGovern explains, that nuclear-armed powers recognized the concept of mutually assured destruction, and for that reason would never have countenanced a nuclear first strike. But the Reagan administration seemed to think that anti-ballistic missile systems could keep the U.S. safe from Russian strikes, and therefore give them an advantage in the arms race. In fact there is no missile defense system that can truly keep a country safe from all threats, and so we have a situation where MAD has been compromised, without any real advance in safety. However lackluster the recent summit between Biden and Putin, it's good to see them at least acknowledge that nuclear war should be off the table, period. President Biden met with Putin recently, McGovern explains, which is good for Biden's stance toward Russia, and, of course, for world peace. War with Russia is sometimes held out as an actual possibility, especially over supposed acts of provocation like Russia's annexation of Crimea or the various cyberattacks of recent months. But since Russia has nuclear weapons, there's simply no world in which we could fight a full scale war—the consequences could be the destruction of the entire human race. Whatever Biden's foreign policy legacy is over the rest of his term, maintaining peace with Russia must be at the top of the list. Discussed on the show: "Biden-Putin Summit: Boon or Bust?" War with Russia is sometimes held out as an actual possibility, especially over supposed acts of provocation like Russia's annexation of Crimea or the various cyberattacks of recent months. But since Russia has nuclear weapons, there's simply no world in which we could fight a full scale war—the consequences could be the destruction of the entire human race. Whatever Biden's foreign policy legacy is over the rest of his term, maintaining peace with Russia must be at the top of the list. Discussed on the show: "Biden-Putin Summit: Boon or Bust?" (Antiwar.com Original) The Best and the Brightest "Ukraine crisis: Transcript of leaked Nuland-Pyatt call" (BBC News) Yesterday's Man: The Case Against Joe Biden "Biden and Blinken Blink on Ukraine" (Antiwar.com Original) "Nyet Means Nyet" (WikiLeaks) Ray McGovern is the co-creator of Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity and the former chief of the CIA's Soviet analysts division. Scott talks to Sam Hussini about the sudden popularity of the coronavirus “lab leak” theory. For about a year straight, Husseini reminds us, anyone discussing the possibility that the coronavirus originated in a lab—even credentialed scientists—were ridiculed in the media and kicked off internet platforms for promoting conspiracy theories. Now, it's suddenly acceptable to propose that this might have been the real origin of the global pandemic of the last year. But for those who have been paying attention, says Husseini, this controversy is nothing new: governments have been conducting “gain of function” research on deadly viruses for decades, and leaks are more common than people think. Husseini considers the danger to humanity from these pathogens comparable to the dangers from nuclear weapons. Scott interviews Annelle Sheline about her work on the war in Yemen. Sheline says that negotiating an end to the war has proven difficult, since both the UN framework and the U.S.-Saudi mentality is totally inconsistent with the situation on the ground. Neither will confront the fact that the Houthi "rebels" have actually been in control of most of the country for the last few years already, and the Hadi "government" is really a group of men in a hotel room in Saudi Arabia. Asking for concessions from the Houthis at this stage simply isn't realistic. And so the status quo continues: a near-total blockade, supposedly to stop weapons from getting into the hands of militants, but which really just prevents food and basic medicine from getting to a civilian population suffering from a devastating famine and multiple outbreaks of otherwise easily preventable illnesses. Scott interviews Gareth Porter about his coverage of a recently-released document liberated by Daniel Ellsberg when he originally leaked the Pentagon Papers in the 1970s. This document, Porter explains, shows how in 1958 the military wanted to use tactical nuclear weapons against China over the offshore islands crisis. It was only Eisenhower's intervention that stopped the Joint Chiefs from going ahead with the plan, though ironically, it was Eisenhower's own efforts to combat the military-industrial complex by reducing conventional military forces that helped lead to an increased focus on nuclear weapons as a primary military tool in the first place. Ellsberg has released this document because the idea that the U.S. might go to war with China over Taiwan has thrust this issue to the fore once again. Nuclear brinksmanship, he says, remains one of the greatest threats not just to American national security, but to the very survival of the human race. The idea of an all-out war with China as in any way a legitimate possibility must be vehemently opposed before we ever come to the point of using nuclear weapons again. Scott interviews Max Blumenthal about the recent violence that has thrust Israel-Palestine into the national spotlight. On one hand, there is a growing recognition—thanks to reports from organizations like Human Rights Watch—that Israel is essentially an apartheid Jewish state with second-class Palestinian citizens. On the other hand, there has been a great deal of concern about a supposed rise in anti-semitic violence around the world, and especially in America, in response to the coverage of Israel's crimes. Blumenthal says this latter claim is actually extremely overblown—if you look into the supposed incidents, many turn out to be as benign as a Palestinian solidarity march or a speaker advocating for equal rights for Palestinians. Jews have been victims in many societies throughout history, but today, says Blumenthal, they are doing very well in America and are much safer here, on the whole, than in Israel. And the Israeli government, unfortunately, has now become the perpetrator of a great deal of injustice and abuse in its own right. John Kiriakou discusses the case of hero whistleblower Daniel Hale, who helped expose the White House's secret drone assassination program during the Obama administration. Hale has pled guilty to one charge under the espionage act, in an effort to win the mercy of the court, but he still faces four other charges, which at the moment the Justice Department is refusing to back down from. Hale is now facing at least some time in prison, but could be given a much longer sentence, depending on how things go in the coming months. Scott and Kiriakou remind us that, of course, Hale shouldn't be facing any charges at all: the secret activities he exposed—namely the killing of civilians—are criminal, and therefore can't be classified in the first place under U.S. law.
