The US Supreme Court is to decide on a case that directly challenges Roe vs Wade, the 1973 ruling that guarantees the right to an abortion. Emily Tamkin in Washington, DC and Megan Gibson in London discuss the fight for reproductive rights, not just in the US but across the world. Meanwhile, President Joe Biden has warned his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in a video call of "strong measures" that could be applied to Moscow, amid fears that Russian troops amassing on the border with Ukraine could lead to an invasion. The team discuss the limits of US power, and what the growing tensions mean. In You Ask US, a listener wonders how upset China is about diplomatic boycotts of the forthcoming Beijing Winter Olympics. Further reading: Emily Tamkin on a dark day for abortion rights in the US. Megan Gibson on the US boycotting the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing. Mark Sleboda, Moscow-based international relations security analyst, joins us to discuss the Putin-Biden summit. US President Joe Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet today in a virtual summit as NATO advances closer to the Russian border. The world watches with bated breath as the two nuclear powers teeter on the edge of a collision that was created by the US overthrow of the government of Ukraine.Scott Ritter, former UN weapons inspector in Iraq, joins us to discuss the EU's "Cuban Missile Crisis" on the Russian border. The hope for a peaceful solution to the United States empire's advances on the Russian border is weak, but still alive as Europe faces an existential crisis of its own making.Dr. Yolandra Hancock, board-certified pediatrician and obesity medicine specialist, joins us to discuss the omicron variant. As the latest coronavirus variant continues its inevitable takeover of the landscape, there is a rare discussion as to whether the milder version of the virus could potentially bring an end to the pandemic via a process known as the "law of diminishing virulence."George Koo, journalist, social activist, and international business consultant, joins us to discuss China. The US has announced a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in China. Also, we discuss the Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai, whose recent actions have been used as a blunt weapon to attack the Chinese government.K.J. Noh, activist, writer, and teacher, joins us to discuss the latest lawsuit against Facebook. A 150 billion dollar lawsuit against Facebook has been filed by Rohingya refugees arguing that the social media giant did not use enough censorship to stop hate speech against their group. Some civil libertarian observers are suspicious that the lawsuit may be another move to facilitate increased censorship on social media.Robert Fantina, journalist and Palestine activist, joins us to discuss Israel and Iran. Israel has launched another series of attacks on the nation of Syria. Also, Israel is making a number of odd demands of the US related to negotiations over the JCPOA.Gerald Horne, professor of history at the University of Houston, author, historian, and researcher, joins us to discuss Ethiopia. The US empire is moving to destabilize the African nation, and many suspect that the move is another proxy attack on China. The US seems to be moving to destabilize and overthrow a number of African governments in an overt attempt to decrease Chinese influence on the resource-rich continent.Ajamu Baraka, 2016 US vice presidential candidate for the Green Party, joins us to discuss President Biden's summit of democracy. President Biden has invited the US-sponsored Venezuelan actor Juan Guaido to his worldwide summit of democracies in a move that is increasingly revealing this gathering as a theater of the absurd.

U.S.-Russia Conflict: Post Biden-Putin Summit with Dr. Andrei Korobkov, Professor, Political Science and International Relations, Middle Tennessee State University and Dr. Mark Katz, Professor, Schar School of Policy and Government, George Mason University With Host LCDR Patrick Ryan, USN (Ret), Founding President, Tennessee World Affairs Council July 13, 2021 @ 7 pm What's Ahead in the U.S.-Russia Relationship After the Biden-Putin Summit When United States President Joe Biden and Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin met in Geneva on June 16th there was an icy cast on prospects for positive results. Yet, Biden said he did what he came to do. That seemed to have been to put Putin on notice concerning: cyber-attacks on American systems; human rights and suppression of Russian opposition; provocative military moves against neighbors like Ukraine; and observance of international norms of behavior. Going into the summit, the U.S. and Russia were deeply at odds over these and other sources of conflict. Beyond the leaders' press conferences and officials' talk show appearances there's much more to dissect and understand on what the Washington-Moscow relationship is going to look like. To better understand this important foreign policy challenge for the United States, the Tennessee World Affairs Council is convening a Global Dialogue Webinar on the topic, “U.S.-Russia Conflict: Post Biden-Putin Summit,” featuring Dr. Andrei Korobkov and Dr. Mark Katz on Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at 7pm CT. Dr. Andrei Korobkov Dr. Korobkov is Professor and Director of Russian Studies in the Department of Political Science and International Relations, Middle Tennessee State University. He focuses his scholarship on post-Soviet Russia and Eastern Europe. Dr. Katz is a Professor in the Schor School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. He has lectured and written extensively on Moscow's foreign policy. Korobkov and Katz will drill down into the summit outcomes and discuss the path ahead for the conflict-ridden relationship. And they will welcome you into the conversation. The Global Dialogue on U.S.-Russia relations will be moderated by LCDR Patrick Ryan, USN(Ret), founding President of the Tennessee World Affairs Council and a former intelligence officer. Listen to this special edition podcast with multiple experts providing analyses on the Biden-Putin Summt in Geneva on 16 June 2021. This is episode 16 in the 2021 GCSP Podcast Series. Dr Paul Vallet: Welcome to the Geneva Centre for Security Policy weekly podcast. I'm your host, Dr Paul Vallet, Associate Fellow in the Global Fellowship Initiative. As you all know, on the 16th of June 2021, Geneva hosted the first in person meeting of President of the United States Joe Biden, and President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin. This was the first in person meeting of the two leaders since Biden's election to the presidency of the US. It was a Summit which had generated a lot of interest a lot of coverage, over 3,000 journalists converged on Geneva for what was billed as an important and historical landmark meeting that was in line with previous US-Soviet meetings in Geneva, in 1955, and 1985. Much was expected and much was on the agenda for this meeting for which the Swiss government played host. During the day, the GCSP joined the array of commentators for this event, by constituting a specially dedicated newsroom in which we coordinated a lot of the views of our different experts and relayed also interviews given to the local and international press. We've also produced a series of video commentaries virtually live to offer on-the-moment comment, especially following the two press conferences that the leaders held separately in the evening of June 16, before they returned to their respective countries. So, today's podcast is a little bit because we've decided to rebroadcast some of these views to give you of course, what our experts see as the important takeaways from the Summit.

Scott interviews Ray McGovern about the Biden-Putin summit. It was not exactly a groundbreaking meeting, says McGovern, though Biden and Putin did agree on at least one crucial point: America and Russia must never fight a nuclear war, since the results would be beyond catastrophic. It used to be the case, McGovern explains, that nuclear-armed powers recognized the concept of mutually assured destruction, and for that reason would never have countenanced a nuclear first strike. But the Reagan administration seemed to think that anti-ballistic missile systems could keep the U.S. safe from Russian strikes, and therefore give them an advantage in the arms race. In fact there is no missile defense system that can truly keep a country safe from all threats, and so we have a situation where MAD has been compromised, without any real advance in safety. However lackluster the recent summit between Biden and Putin, it's good to see them at least acknowledge that nuclear war should be off the table, period. Dr. Leon Aron joined the show to walk us through what actually happened at the long-anticipated summit. He explains that while the leaders discussed cyberattacks, arms control, and the US-Russia relationship, Biden gained little to nothing from the meeting, while the summit legitimized the Putin regime. Dr. Aron, who was born in Moscow and came to the United States as a refugee in 1978, is a resident scholar and the director of Russian studies at AEI.
