Hosted on Acast. [originally published on Patreon Dec 18, 2022] Today's the third episode examining the life of Leon Trotsky, and I'm joined by Comrade Chad. We discuss Trotsky's activities in exile including work with the Soviet Opposition Bloc, terrorist actions, and the ensuing show trials. We particularly discuss the curious case of Genrikh Lyushkov, who overlaps with some of the Japanese intrigue from prior episodes, as well as more about the Promethean League, and everyone's favorite topic: outright collaboration with the fascists.  We cover the French Turn, touch on the Chinese and Vietnamese Trots, try not to relitigate the Spanish Civil War, and introduce the cast of characters (pay attention) who will become important in the US Trotskyist movement. Finally, we discuss Trotsky's time in Mexico, including the very impartial American Committee for the Defense of Leon Trotsky and some outright snitch shit for HUAC. Not the end of the Trotskyism series but the end for Leon Trotsky. Founded: 26 June 1950 Dissolved: 1979 (as International Association for Cultural Freedom) The CIA wanted to influence other parts of the world in order to combat the growing sentiment towards Communism, focusing especially on artists, play-writes, musicians as well as intellectuals. Both of whom they knew would go on to influence many others. Many members were former Communist Party members. Trotskyites specifically who'd turned against Stalin, & his totalitarian measures. Most were not pro-American by any means. They were generally Democratic Socialist types. Like modern Libs, they believed America was backwards, & lacked culture. Quite a few top members were of Eastern European Jewish descent. Obviously, they had no intentions of spreading traditional American rugged individualistic, or patriotic ideology. They were all about "dumbocracy" aka, the Liberal World Order. The horrific war in Ukraine is now entering its third week after Russian troops launched a full-scale invasion on Feb. 24. As Ukrainians fight for their lives and the world teeters on the edge of global conflict, the disastrous ripple effects of the war can be felt throughout the world. What will it take to organize and mobilize an international movement for peace and de-escalation? As part of the Global Day of Action for Peace in Ukraine on March 6, 2022, RootsAction.org, the American Committee for US-Russia Accord, CodePink, Just Foreign Policy, World BEYOND War, and Progressive Democrats of America convened an urgent panel discussion to address this very question. The White House claimed on Friday, Feb. 11 that attacks on Ukraine by Russian troops may be imminent, though Russian officials have denied these claims and denounced them as “dangerous lies.” Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky, meanwhile, has beseeched the US and NATO powers to not cause panic and further inflame tensions with Russia. With every passing hour, the world watches with trepidation as preparations for military conflict in Ukraine are made and Western media outlets loudly beat the drums of war. But it is not too late to avoid needless bloodshed—there is still time to avoid a catastrophic war with Russia in Ukraine. More than 100 national and regional US organizations released a joint statement on Feb. 1 urging President Biden “to end the US role in escalating the extremely dangerous tensions with Russia over Ukraine.” Following the release of that statement, RootsAction.org and Code Pink cosponsored a news conference on Feb. 2, during which speakers examined the crisis in Ukraine and forcefully articulated the need for the US to commit to diplomatic means for de-escalating the threat of war. With permission from the event organizers, The Real News Network is publishing the video of this news conference for our audience. Speakers include: Norman Solomon, national director of RootsAction.org; Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink; Jack F. When friends tell me I'm too old to be going up on ladders, I resist. When the storm windows have swelled over the summer with basement moisture, barely fitting in the window frames, I persist. Yet finally, when I reach the last two upstairs windows, and the 20 lb. storms get stuck sliding into place, and I begin feeling insecure jiggling them free and adjusting them atop the extension ladder, I desist. Resist, persist, desist. The progression of age. I must concede the limitations of my 70 years. If I were still in need of confirmation, it came when I realized that neither of the handymen I would immediately consider calling, both younger than me, were men I would feel comfortable asking to go up on an extension ladder to complete the task. I must now search out a younger, stronger, more agile person, the right man to take on the short but precarious project. I do not yet shy away from physical labor. I was pleased to keep up with the pace of two considerably younger men as two hay ricks worth of hay (over 300 bales in total) arrived to be stacked in the barn for winter. And of course the security of knowing that a sufficient supply is on hand to get through the next few snowy months is a great comfort. Yet with age comes more typical old man preoccupations, indoors. What has engaged me intensely the last couple of weeks, when being outside has not felt so enticing, has not been the farm, but a project of reconstructing the past. It started when I was reorganizing my library a couple of weeks ago, having worked through most of the books in the house. I pulled out a text in Hebrew, a Talmudic commentary it turns out, which I inherited from my paternal grandmother, Eva Scherzer. Out of the book fluttered two letters, both dated in 1942, both sent from Los Angeles. One, in English, authorized my grandmother to retrieve eight boxes of books from storage, and was signed by Heinrich and Nelly Mann. The other, in German, kindly translated by Éric's friend Francis, was dated several months later. It was also from Heinrich Mann, and it spoke of his frustration at the difficulties of trying to save the fragments of a lost library. Growing up, we had been told by our parents that our grandmother had been somehow instrumental in saving the papers of Thomas Mann. We never knew what that meant. As my sister, Jolie, said, she couldn't imagine that Grandma Eva, traveling as a refugee from Vienna across Russia with her baby daughter after the German Anschluss took over Austria, was somehow carrying Thomas Mann's letters under her coat. But what did it mean? Here, for the first time, was a clue. Heinrich Mann was Thomas Mann's older brother, not nearly as famous as his Nobel Prize winning junior but also a novelist and accomplished in his own right. He was also far more radical than Thomas, and it would make sense that my grandmother, herself a communist, would have some association with him. His letter informed her that he had no resources to help, and he appreciated her willingness to contribute $20 to obtaining the books. He suggested she talk to the “committee” about obtaining the remainder of the $70 required. But what committee? And what was this lost library? I've been on a quest the last couple of weeks to find out. I wrote to the Thomas Mann archive at Yale's Beineke Library, and called the Heinrich Mann archive at the University of Southern California to inquire about whether either had received books in 1942 or 1943 or could tell me anything about this. Yale has yet to reply, but the archivist at USC immediately located a file on my grandmother, containing three letters from her to Heinrich Mann, translations of which I await. The librarian there has promised me further correspondence from Heinrich regarding retrieving his books. From browsing the letters myself, I found reference to a meeting between my grandmother and two women, Evelyn Hersey and Jeanette Siebold. A little on line research revealed Evelyn Hersey to have been a prominent social worker who died in 1963. She was the first Social Welfare Attachée in the US Foreign Service after World War II. Prior to that, she was involved with an organization which was variously known as the American Committee for Christian Refugees, the American Christian Committee for Refugees, and the American Committee for Christian German Refugees. Aha, I thought, this must be the committee referred to in the Heinrich Mann letter. I have inquired of the Peace Library at Swarthmore College, where this committee's archives are largely stored, about reviewing their records in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, I am acutely aware of the need to move quickly to get the story right before sources of information disappear. Francis, who immediately became excited by this project because of his deep knowledge of the Mann family, had suggested that I interview Justus Rosenberg, a professor emeritus of literature at Bard residing near here in Rhinebeck. Himself a remarkable man, Professor Rosenberg was a resistance fighter in World War II and worked with Varian Fry (“the American Schindler”) and a group that rescued more than 2,000 at risk intellectuals from Vichy France. He personally shepherded Heinrich and Nelly Mann across the Pyrenees to the relative safety of Spain, sipping from a brandy flask provided by Nelly. Sadly, the New York Times informs us, Professor Rosenberg died this week at age 100. The ultimate details of my grandmother's role saving this lost library promise to be considerably less romantic. They intrigue me nonetheless. And I am very pleased to think that after years of a hearing a refracted view of history, our family association now seems to be with the right Mann. If I can only find the right man now for the storm windows. Scott interviews James Carden, Adviser to The American Committee for US-Russia Accord, about relations between Russia and the European Union. In recent years, Carden explains, some EU states have shown themselves unwilling to even sit down to cordial negotiations with Russia, who has been getting a reputation—largely thanks to Western media—for aggressive territorial expansion. This depiction could hardly be further from the truth. With the exception of Russia's annexation of Crimea, which was mostly peaceful and explicitly called for by the residents of that region, Russia has shown no indications of hegemonic designs on Eastern Europe. If anything, it's the United States and some of its European allies that have been trying to expand into Russian territory by bringing more and more Eastern nations into NATO. Since the Soviet Union collapsed, this project is utterly pointless—and it's also extremely dangerous. America ought to be careful that it doesn't cross any Russian red lines, the only resolution to which would be all-out war. "US media outlets seem to be egging biden on to take a harder line than than the President wanted to," Carden says. "It's a product of the last several years of Russiagate hysteria. Gilbert Doctorow talks about Biden’s pick for Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, particularly his famous stepfather, Samuel Pisar. Pisar is well-known these days for being a holocaust survivor rescued by American GIs during World War II, but is less known for his decorated international career afterward. Doctorow brings up Pisar’s past because of his prominent role as a representative for American companies in Europe, and especially in the Soviet Union. Pisar’s view was that commerce is an important feature of peaceful diplomatic relations, even with semi-hostile countries. Doctorow hopes that this will be Blinken’s attitude as well as he is tasked with taking the lead in America’s foreign policy toward countries like Russia and China. But with the general hawkishness of Biden’s cabinet, the future remains in doubt. Discussed on the show: Memoirs of a Russianist, Volume I: From the Ground Up “Will Antony Blinken’s Past Catch Up With Him?” (Antiwar.com Original) Gilbert Doctorow is an independent political analyst and was the European Coordinator of The American Committee for East-West Accord. Gilbert Doctorow discusses the latest aggressive maneuvers being carried out by the U.S. government and its allies toward Russia. Doctorow says that the flying of planes near Russia’s border just for intelligence gathering is quite common and relatively unthreatening—but lately America has been sending bombers to those same areas, which actively engage their weapons systems in a way that Russia can detect. Doctorow says that the only possible motive for doing this is to send the message that America is still in charge, and that our NATO allies, who accompany U.S. planes on many of these flights, are united in opposing Russian interests. These maneuvers, Doctorow reminds us, are just one of the ways America has been posturing against Russia in recent years. Our government has also supported regime change in Ukraine and Belarus, helped expand NATO further eastward, pulled out of nuclear weapons treaties and encouraged a full-scale anti-Russian propaganda campaign in the form of the “Russiagate” conspiracy theory. All things considered, Russia has shown tremendous restraint—Doctorow fears that won’t always be the case. Scott interviews James Carden about his latest article, which explores the recent return of many prominent neocons to the Democratic Party in opposition to Trump. Carden reminds us that during the 1960s a group of hawkish Democrats moved over to side with the Republicans in response to some of the radical social movements in America at that time, thus founding the neoconservative movement. Now, as we near the end of Trump’s first term, many of them are supporting Biden—and it’s easy to see why, says Carden: Biden and Harris represent the exact same establishment foreign policy consensus shared by both Bushes, both Clintons, and Barack Obama. Sadly, even many progressives find themselves siding with the centrist establishment, since they will do anything to oppose Trump. Gilbert Doctorow discusses the political unrest in Belarus, where opposition protesters are demanding a new round of elections after President Lukashenko claimed to have won 80% of the vote this most recent time around. Lukashenko has served as president for 26 years, and until now, explains Doctorow, has faced very little opposition. Doctorow says there is good reason to believe that Lukashenko remains popular in Belarus—but probably not popular enough to explain an apparent 80% electoral landslide. As usual there is a faction in American and European politics that supports regime change, particularly with an eye to diminishing the power of Russia, a longtime ally of Belarus. Whether America really is involved is not clear, but Doctorow is adamant that the current situation is not just a repeat of what we saw in Ukraine in 2014, as some are claiming. After completing his Greek education, he attended the American University in Cairo, Egypt, The National Bible Institute, and New York University. He earned his Doctor of Theology degree from Luther Rice Seminary. In addition, Dr. Zodhiates was the recipient of several honorary doctorates. While serving in the British Army in Cairo, Egypt, Zodhiates received The Voice of the Gospel, a magazine published by The American Committee for the Evangelization of the Greeks. To pass the time, he decided to write an article for the magazine. He wrote it in English and, not thinking about it, wrote the accompanying letter in Greek. When they realized they had found someone who loved the Lord and knew both languages, they invited him to come to America in 1946.In 1966, they elected Zodhiates as president of what is now called AMG International (Advancing the Ministries of the Gospel). Under his leadership, AMG grew from a small ministry focusing on the land of Greece to a worldwide evangelistic and relief ministry. His mission was the regeneration of souls, but he did not ignore the physical needs of the people he met. The author of over 200 books and booklets in English, as well as 82 in Greek, Zodhiates started a book house, AMG Publishers, which has since grown into a significant producer of Bibles and Christian books. On October 10, 2009, Dr. Spiros Zodhiates was called home by his Heavenly Father. Throughout his six decades of leadership, Dr. Zodhiates demonstrated a profound commitment to the Word of God and a singular focus on accomplishing his calling faithfully. Amnesty International’s Adotei Akwei sat down with Melissa and Shiv to discuss making human rights about human beings, the power of “click activism,” and his life path. Biography: Adotei Akwei is managing director of government relations for Amnesty International USA. Since 1988, he has worked with a focus on human rights and U.S. foreign policy toward Africa, working at CARE USA, the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights, the American Committee on Africa, and The Africa Fund. Description: How can activists personalize human rights abuses to garner the attention of the world? Akwei discusses the influence of Nelson Mandela on his life path, the role of journalism and social media in exposing truth, the role of NGOs and government, and his personal definitions of success. He touches upon universal trends in human rights work as well as Trump's Muslim ban and the role of social media activism in this round of cabinet nominations. Quote Previews: “The power of journalism to make things very immediate is incredibly important. We at Amnesty do something like that. When the organization was founded in 1961, it was found to fight for the rights of individuals, and it wasn’t just that individuals were having their rights abused but it was also that it humanized human rights. Up until then, human rights were the work of governments - governments sign treaties, governments adhere to treaties, governments broke treaties - and the rest of us were just casual observers. And what Amnesty did, which is the most significant, was it made human rights about human beings - about individuals. And it made it very personal. “ (6:40) “Social media, particularly Twitter, is the realm of engagement. May not be a good thing, but we can’t ignore it.” (10:40) “This is where both the NGOs and the governments are failing: is that they see themselves as adversaries and I think that’s something we got to try to figure out how to get by, to get beyond.” (18:10)

Prof. Michael G. Plummer. Global trade has been slowing significantly of late; last year, it grew by only 2.8 percent, on par with global GDP for the first time in many years, and is expected to do the same this year. This lackluster growth is particularly problematic for developing economies. While the origins of this slowdown are many, a decline in the pace of trade policy liberalization no doubt plays and important role. In the context of stalled multilateral negotiations under the WTO, more aggressive concerned regional liberalization, or "mega-regionalism", has been proposed as a possible solution. Mega-regional trace negotiations currently include the Trans-Pacific Partnership (RCEP) between ASEAN and six Asian partners; and the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) between the United States and EU. At present, only the TPP has been signed (February 2016) - though not ratified. Given that it is slated to be modern "21st Century" trade agreement embracing deep integration, the TPP could have not only significant direct economic effects but also far-reaching ramifications for global trade governance. Using a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model, we consider the economic ramifications of the TPP but also analyze the political economy of mega-regionalism as well its implications for the future of the global trading system, with a focus on developing economies. Michael G. Plummer has been Director of SAIS Europe since 2014. A SAIS Professor of International Economics since 2001 and the Eni Professor of Economics since 2008, he was Head of the Development Division of the Organization for Economic Co-opration and Development (OECD) in Paris from 2010 to 2012; an associate professor at Brandeis University (1992-2001); and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Asian Economics (Elsevier) 2007-2015. He was president of the American Committee on Asian Economics Studies (ACAES) from 2008 until 2015 and is currently a nonresident senior fellow at the East-West Centre. A former Fulbright Chair in Economics and Pew Fellow in International Affairs at Harvard University, he has been an Asian Development Bank (ADB) distinguished lecturer on several occasions and team leader of projects for various organizations including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, the United Nations, the OECD, the ADB and the World Trade Organization. He has taught at more than a dozen universities in Asia, Europe, and North America.
