She returns to Bad Faith podcast to provide new insight into how the State Department routinely deprioritized or flat out ignored reports about human rights abuses so that it would not have to contend with domestic laws prohibiting weapons sales to countries that failed to meet human rights standards. It's a Newsday Tuesday with Emma on the mic. She recaps the chilling spectacle that was the Bukele-Trump Oval Office meeting / press availability, including the Kafkaesque exchange over the wrongfully deported Maryland father Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. As Emma explains, despite the Supreme Court's ruling that the administration must make an effort to bring Abrego Garcia home, the Trump administration and and El Salvador's crypto-strong man both claim to be unable to abide by the ruling out of deference to one another. Emma then talks to Annelle Sheline, a research fellow in the Quincy Institute's Middle East program who's latest paper focuses on the U.S.'s prioritization of weapons sales over human rights. Annelle gets into some of the thinking of her state department colleagues over this issue, which she finds to be rooted in outdated American exceptionalism. The hypocrisy is particularly noteworthy when it comes to Israel, despite growing public sentiment against Israel's destruction of Gaza and perpetual subjugation of the Palestinian people. Read Annelle's paper "Under Primacy, Weapons Sales Will Always Supersede Human Rights" here: https://quincyinst.org/research/under-primacy-weapons-sales-will-always-supersede-human-rights/#  In the Fun Half, Emma further peels the onion of Stephen Miller's lies about the Abrego Garcia case, citing the administration's own court filings. She then delves into the debate between Megyn Kelly and Matt Walsh over trad wives and whether women should only tend to the needs of their husbands and children. Ben Shapiro and Some More News also get in on the action. And a caller asks how he might talk to members of his family who have gone down the conservative rabbit hole. On this edition of Parallax Views, the Quincy Institute's Dr. Annelle Sheline, a frequent guest on the program and a former Biden-era State Dept. official who resigned over the U.S. handling of Gaza, returns to discuss her briefing "Under Primacy, Weapons Sales Will Always Supersede Human Rights". But first we discuss the article she recently co-wrote for Responsible Statecraft entitled "Trump drops news bomblet: Direct US-Iran talks this Saturday". The conversation begins with a discussion of Netanyahu's meeting with Donald Trump earlier this week and some talk about the upcoming talks between the U.S. and Iran. We then get into the main event of this conversation: the ways in which weapons sales have trumped human rights rhetoric in U.S. foreign policy. For as much as the United States has often talked about human rights, it has often sold weapons to autocratic human rights abusers. We'll discuss a number of historical moments related to this including the assassination of Salvador Allende and the bloody Chile coup of 1973, Jimmy Carter vs. Ronald Reagan on human rights & U.S. foreign policy, the Iran-Contra affair, the legacies of the Cold War and the Global War on Terror, how wars abroad often lead to repression at home (and concerns about Trump's plans for pro-Palestinian voices in America), bridging the gap between human rights and realism/U.S. national interests, a brief look at the Leahy Laws, sanctions and weapons sales, the U.S.'s unconditional support of Israel's actions in Gaza as undermining claims to defending human rights, and much, much more.

Religion plays a prominent role in the domestic and foreign policies of Middle Eastern states, particularly in the Persian Gulf. But the ways in which religion, specifically Islam, is used as a tool of statecraft are often misunderstood, leading to mischaracterizations and counterproductive policies. In his new book, Jon Hoffman examines how Islam is marshaled as a tool of statecraft in the Middle East. The book offers new insight into the geopolitics of religion in the Middle East and how ruling elites in the region use Islam to protect and advance what are inherently political objectives—namely, regime preservation and power projection. Understanding the political incentives behind the manipulation of religion in the region is critical to debates surrounding Islam, democracy, and authoritarianism in the Middle East. The book also raises critical questions for US policy in the Middle East, which often relies on fundamental misunderstandings of Islam and its relationship with politics in the region.Join Hoffman for a discussion on Islam and Statecraft, followed by commentary by Mustafa Akyol, Peter Mandaville, and Annelle Sheline on the politics of Islam in the Middle East. On this edition of Parallax Views, last week President Donald Trump told reporters on Air Force One that he'd like to "clean out" war-torn Gaza. He suggested Egypt or Jordan take Palestinian refugees. Joining us to discuss Trump's floated idea of "cleaning out" Gaza is the Quincy Institute's Dr. Annelle Sheline. Dr. Sheline made headlines during the Biden-era because she resigned from the State Department over that administration's handling of Gaza. In this conversation Dr. Sheline will explain why Trump's "cleaning out Gaza" idea is concerning, not least of which because it would amount to ethnic cleansing of Palestinians in Gaza. She will also delve into how carrying out the idea would impact the peace between Israel and Jordan. In the latter portion of the program, we'll discuss the potential factional disputes in Trump's administration over U.S. foreign policy as it relates to the Middle East.

It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Annelle Sheline, research fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to discuss the reporting around a recently brokered ceasefire deal in Israel & Gaza. Then, she speaks with Jael Holzman, senior reporter at HeatMap News, to discuss her recent piece entitled "The Growing Push to Ban Renewable Energy in Oklahoma." First, Emma runs through updates on Netanyahu's torpedoing of the alleged ceasefire, including an escalation killing dozens more in Gaza, ProPublica's report on Biden's suppression of dissent over Gaza, Trump's CEO cabal, the US' TikTok Ban, Trump's AG nom, the FTC's report on UnitedHealthcare's overcharging of cancer patients by nearly 1000%, and compensation for women's college basketball players, before expanding briefly on the odd power plays between Trump and Biden over the developing TikTok Ban. Dr. Annelle Sheline then joins, diving right into this week's development of a predictably brief ceasefire in Gaza, including Netanyahu's immediate refusal to abide by its requirement and the following escalation resulting in some 70 dead, unpacking why Bibi has once again sabotaged a deal, why Trump still wants peace for his inauguration, and why Netanyahu's sights for the second Trump Administration are set on the West Bank. Next, Dr. Sheline and Emma shift to unpacking the future of the normalization attempt between Israel and Saudi Arabia – a process that the Biden Administration happily picked up off of Trump 1.0 – and the genuine danger of Trump extending the guarantee of uncritical military support that we provide Israel to Saudi Arabia as well, before wrapping up with a conversation on the particular role the Biden Administration's support for Israel's genocide in Gaza had on undermining support for Kamala Harris' candidacy. Jael Holzman then looks to Oklahoma as she walks Emma through the developing push to ban renewable energy projects locally, exploring how the expansion of the industry alongside a growing reactionary movement helped bolster this drive, despite its obvious potential negative impacts. Expanding on this, Holzman and Emma briefly explore the evolution of this “Green MAGA” movement as exemplified by RFK Jr., and the increasing problem of a green energy incentive structure based on tax credits, before wrapping up by tackling the extractive and material incentives for Trump's fantasy land grab of Greenland. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive deep into the exposé of Elon Musk's gamer fraud, talk with Jersey Boy from Milwaukee about engaging in disagreement, and watch Sam Husseini's righteous and confrontational action at Blinken's final press conference. Jay from Oregon unpacks some finer details of the nurses' strike, Pete Hegseth shies away from promising not to be a hypocrite, and Jeff from CA shares his insight into Hegseth's problematic history when it comes to a Defense Secretary nomination, plus, your calls and IMs! Annelle Sheline resigned her position at the U.S. Department of State in protest of President Biden's unconditional support of Israel as it waged a war of immense destruction in Gaza. An expert on the Middle East at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, Sheline says Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is attempting to pull the United States into a regional war after Israel assassinated Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Tehran and Beirut. The attacks virtually guaranteed Iranian retaliation at some point, and the Biden administration has vowed to protect Israel from attacks. For all the wars and terrorism in the Middle East since 1948,  the region has yet to witness a full-scale, regional conflict directly involving outside powers.

Plus, Mehdi debunks Israel's latest attempt at genocide denial. On Biden resignations…The protests against Biden aren't just happening outside the White House. They've also been happening within, as several Biden administration officials have publicly resigned over the support for Israel's war on Gaza.Three of them – Tariq Habash, Annelle Sheline, and Hala Rharrit – join Mehdi to discuss why they chose to give up their jobs rather than continuing to work for an administration that was aiding Israel in its brutal assault on Gaza.“It's worse than Iraq,” Rharrit, a former U.S. diplomat, told Mehdi, adding how she watched pictures “going viral of U.S.-made bombs that would say USA and then would show the children that were killed by those bombs.”Tariq Habash was a Palestinian-American political appointee at the Department of Education who resigned in January, making him the first Palestinian-American in the administration to do so. “After months of trying to communicate with the president, with other people in the administration who were representing the president on these policies, it very much felt like there was an exception for Palestinians in terms of his empathy,” Habash said.Mehdi's interview with these three former officials was held just hours before interior department staffer Lily Greenberg Call became the first Jewish political appointee to resign in protest of the war.On Trump…As Donald Trump weighs his options for a running mate, top Republicans like J.D. Vance and Tim Scott are keen to earn some brownie points with the former president – flocking to his side at the first ever criminal trial of a former president. Mehdi asks Mary Trump, Donald Trump's niece, why these GOP members are so desperate for a position that almost got Mike Pence killed. “The promise of power is so overwhelming for them. They literally think that they're going to be the exception to the rule. And anybody who pledges to shield Donald Trump ends up getting banished, stepped on, or imprisoned,” Mary said. Mary Trump also tells Mehdi why she's worried about Biden agreeing to a debate with Donald Trump, the first of which has been set for June. “It concerns me that he's legitimized a man who incited an insurrection against his own government. So by putting him up on that stage with him, he's essentially normalizing him as the presidential nominee.”On Israel's genocide denial…In his monologue, Mehdi calls out the Israeli PR machine for warping the UN's reporting on identified bodies into a false narrative about a “fake” death toll in Gaza. “On May 8th, [the UN] provided a number for reported fatalities – again, over 34,000 – but also included a new subset of 24,686 ‘identified' fatalities,” Mehdi said. “What they're pretending is some smoking gun evidence of a Hamas cover-up, is literally just the difference between fully identified bodies and unidentified or partially-identified bodies. That's it.”Of course, this is not the first time Israel has tried to undermine the Gaza Health Ministry. But as Mehdi points out, Israel's accusations are nothing but propaganda, especially when you consider that Israel's own military relies on the Gaza health ministry's numbers. “There has always been one central goal to all this genocide denial and propaganda around ‘lower' death tolls: to dehumanize the Palestinians who have been killed,” Mehdi said.Friendly reminder: All of our content is currently available to all subscribers, free or paid. In this episode, Annelle Sheline tells host Steve Clemons that the contradictions in US policy toward Israel's war in Gaza made her job as a State Department officer in the Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor “so difficult”. Sheline announced her resignation publicly on March 27.And Khaled Elgindy, a political scientist at the Middle East Institute, argues that US President Joe Biden is a big factor in the country's stagnant policy toward Israel – supporting the war, with some alleviation of the humanitarian crisis. “Most people in the administration have probably moved on in their thinking,” Elgindy says.

It's an EmMajority Report TUESDAY! Sam is out in Las Vegas for the Mass Torts Conference, so Emma is filling in! She speaks with Annelle Sheline, a former staffer with President Biden's State Department, to discuss the reasoning behind why she left her post, namely the Biden administration's efforts to continue to supply military assistance to the Israeli military's offensive in Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's murder of World Central Kitchen and expanding fascist effort, major headlines for today's primaries, Florida's abortion ban, RFK's ballot access, Mike Johnson's Ukraine Aid, and far-right legal battles, before expanding on the details of Israel's slaughter of WCK workers. Anelle Sheline then joins, diving right into the context for her resignation in protest from Biden's State Department, exploring her work on Yemen that preceded joining the government, and the continuing human rights work she participated in over the first year of her contract with the government. After parsing through the major factor – Biden's continuing support for Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza – for her resignation, Sheline parses through some of the greater (albeit immaterial) dissent within the Biden government, including a State Department that is well-prepared to begin enforcing the human rights and arm-sales policies that the US is currently circumventing to support Israel's war, also touching on why the electoral pressure of the “uncommitted” vote is having the biggest sway on Biden in terms of dissent. Next, Anelle walks Emma through the greater implications of Biden's support for apartheid on a global scale, including how it plays into the US' already degrading status on the international stage following the Iraq War and Donald Trump, and Israel's continuing insistence on expanding the conflict throughout the Middle East, before wrapping up by touching on the role of the Abraham Accords in pushing this conflict, and the overwhelming domestic dissent facing Israel's occupation (despite warming relations with some regimes). Emma also parses through the various “uncommitted” movements in today's democratic primaries, and Wisconsin's ballot initiatives. And in the Fun Half: Emma talks with Owen from LA about the lack of coverage around bubbling dissent over relations with Israel in both Jordan and Egypt, as well as Turkey's recent elections, before diving into coverage of Israel's continuing slaughter of aid and healthcare workers in Gaza. Donald Trump dissects the aesthetic problems of genocide, Moody from Minneapolis expands on the horrors of the US' elimination of UNRWA funding, and Charlie Kirk has a predictable problem with Larry David. Dave Rubin carefully asks Ben Shapiro about Candace Owens, plus, your calls and IMs! In recent days and weeks, we've seen what appears to be serious examples of Arab countries opening up geopolitical avenues — as well as relations — with rivals and even adversaries. This would include Iran and Saudi Arabia's announcement that they were not only talking but reopening embassies in each other's countries for the first time in over a decade, Arab normalization with Israel, and even bringing Bashar Assad of Syria back into the fold. This is all being done irrespective of U.S. help or intervention. If anything, outside powers like China are playing a role, much to Washington's chagrin. Here to talk about the implications of this on U.S. foreign policy and ongoing crises like the war in Yemen, is Annelle Sheline, Middle East research fellow at the Quincy Institute. In the first segment, Kelley and Dan talk about the recent AUKUS nuclear sub-agreement and how the U.S. continues to build blocs against China in the Pacific.More from Annelle Sheline:Exit Yemen Now to Assist a Fragile Peace -- American Prospect, 3/8/23What Congress Needs to Know about the Truce in Yemen, w/ Hassan El-Tayyab -- Inkstick Media, 12/5/22It's Time to Cut Off Arms Sales to the Saudi Regime, w/ William Hartung -- The Nation, 11/15/22 This is a public episode. Emma hosts Dr. Annelle Sheline, Middle East Research Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to discuss her recent piece "Ending Counterproductive U.S. Involvement in Yemen." First, Emma runs through updates on Bernie launching a vote to subpoena Howard Schultz in the wake of their egregious and widespread anti-union practices, Blinken's conversations with Russian representatives, the Havana pseudo-Syndrome, Norfolk Southern union workers getting sick at the East Palestine clean-up site, the cooling labor market, voters' concerns about Biden's age, Oregon's UBI for homeless families, and the GOP's congressional aims, before diving deeper into Biden's successful Student-Debt-relief arguments in front of the Supreme Court. Dr. Annelle Sheline then joins as she and Emma reflect on their previous conversations on US involvement in Yemen, assessing the staunch stance by both the Trump and Biden administrations to stand against any Congressional War Powers Resolutions, with Trump openly embraced the Saudi-led war while Biden plays both sides, supporting more Saudi airstrikes in the region while vocally supporting a continuation of peace. Next, Dr. Sheline walks through the state of this 8-year-long humanitarian crisis, looking to comparisons with the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Israeli apartheid as they tackle Yemenis' reliance on dwindling humanitarian aid and the massively destructive impact of blockades – which serve to destroy entire public institutions, infrastructure, and the futures of myriad generations – before she and Emma parse through the various parties involved in shifting this civil war into a proxy war, how and why they became involved, and why this outside funding (from all sides) can only serve to prolong this destruction. Wrapping up, they assess the role of the US in particular, their continued devastation reigned over the Middle East, a potential military pivot to the pacific, and why military-based competition with China would be an outrageously foolish move for the US elite to make. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with Kowalski from Nebraska on the recent revelations about child and migrant labor and get an agricultural update from his farm. They also watch Israeli officials espouse virulently genocidal rhetoric and discuss the culpability of the international community in supporting the apartheid, Matt Walsh actively lies about his elite cohort as they push back against working-class access to education, and Adam and Valerie call in from Iowa to discuss the hypocritic and genocidal demonization of trans people and Cocaine Bear. Yemen remains the worst humanitarian crisis in the world. More than 17 million are food insecure with over 150,000 people experiencing famine like conditions. In late March the heads of all the main UN humanitarian agencies said Yemen was “teetering on the edge of outright catastrophe.” But after nearly eight years of war, the United Nations brokered a truce to coincide with Ramadan and last two months. So far, over two weeks in, this truce is holding. Can it lead to a broader peace agreement?  On the line with me to explain how we got to this ceasefire agreement and what happens next is Annelle Sheline, a Research Fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute.

Although a ceasefire is under way, that doesn't mean the conflict is over and Dr. Sheline believes now is the time to apply pressure to end the intervention once and for all. In this conversation we discuss the history of the conflict between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, Saudi human rights violations, starvation in Yemen due to the Saudi-imposed blockade, the Iranian involvement in Yemen, U.S. support of Saudi Arabia throughout the conflict through expensive arms deals, the War on Terror, the return of Great Power Competition, China, proponents of U.S. primacy believing it is necessary to support dictator and so-called "enlightened autocrats", Prince Mohammad bin Salman and Russia (and parallels between the crisis in Yemen and the invasion of Ukraine), and much, much more!

One year after President Biden pledged to end U.S. support for Saudi Arabia's offensive capabilities in Yemen's civil war, the war continues with no end in sight, and the U.S. remains just as complicit in one of worst humanitarian crises in the world. In this episode, Dr. Annelle Sheline of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft guides us through Yemen's recent history to explain what led to the disastrous Saudi intervention in 2015. Yemen is a place most Americans think little about, yet the Biden administration sent more than $1 billion in arms to Saudi Arabia in 2021 alone, so it could continue its deadly air campaign meant to drive Houthi rebels from power in Sana'a.

Sam and Emma host Mark Joseph Stern, staff writer at Slate, to discuss the potential nominees for Biden's SCOTUS pick. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Annelle Sheline, Middle East research fellow at the Quincy Institute, to discuss the ongoing situation in Yemen. Mark Joseph Stern begins by situating Breyer's brief moment as the leader of the Liberal block as a failure to lead his collective in the midst of a serious shift to the right, looking at how his position since Ginsberg's passing has overseen a Conservative majority that is completely rewriting the rules of the Court. They dive into the contrast we see between Breyer and more activist justices like Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor, and how his role reflects the attitude of the Courts at the turn of the century, rather than the one he actually sits on, before looking at the impact this can have on the next couple decades of the legal system, particularly around paving a road for young lawyers looking to find a way to have a genuine impact on Constitutional Law. This, of course, leads them to the role of the Federalist Society in ensuring that Conservatives have a collective of dedicated legal scholars that sign on to an agenda from their entrance into the world of lawyering, which Stern contrasts effectively with the collection of judges supposedly up to fill Breyer's seat, including Ketanji Brown Jackson, Leondra Kruger, and Michelle Childs, looking to how the favorite of the Democratic corporatists, Childs, dedicated her legal career to anti-union litigation, whereas KBJ has shown a clear dedication to fighting for elements that are genuinely in the future of Democratic activism. They wrap up the interview by touching on the horrific SCOTUS decision that came forward on the Shadow Docket last night, in which Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett pushed through overturning a conservative court's decision to block Alabama's obviously racist redistricting, effectively undermining the only remaining element of the VRA. Next, Dr. Annelle Sheline joins as she, Sam, and Emma take on the recent developments with the US's involvement with Saudi Arabia's war in Yemen, and why Biden suddenly sees increased support of obviously-destructive intervention as good and viable, just a couple of years after Democrats successfully invoked a war powers resolution for Trump's very similar actions. Sam and Emma also touch on Matt Walsh's wildly disgusting and exploitative transphobic honeypot endeavor, and updates on Staten Island's Amazon unionization attempt. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma take on continuing censorship of anti–Israeli beliefs and support, particularly among teachers, and how totally crazy it is that the Bari Weiss's of the world haven't touched on it. MR fav Jenna then calls in to give some updates on the incredible euphoria and gender-affirmation she has found post-surgery, and the difficulties of the journey, Fred from the UK takes on his government's inflation talking points, and Sam from Minnesota lays the road to "stroads". Sam and Emma also touch on Team Youngkin going ad hominem on a High Schooler, Brian Kilmeade sends out his Fox beams to DT, and Worcester and Memphis see some union-busting reversions, plus, your calls and IMs! With its rich natural gas reserves and strategic location, the Gulf monarchy of Qatar has long played an important role in regional and global diplomacy that belies its small size. It has mediated or facilitated a number of sensitive negotiations, including the talks that led to the peace agreement the United States signed in February 2020 with the Taliban. Since then, and even after the Taliban overthrew the internationally backed government in Kabul this summer, officials in Doha have continued to exercise influence in Afghanistan. Qatar's diplomatic efforts have not always been smooth sailing, however. For more than three years, it had to weather a blockade that was imposed on the country by a group of countries led by neighboring Saudi Arabia and the UAE, fellow members of the Gulf Cooperation Council. That embargo was only lifted in January of this year. Today on Trend Lines, Annelle Sheline, a research fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, joins WPR's Elliot Waldman to discuss the unique role that Qatar plays in the Middle East and in the broader Islamic world, as well as the complicated dynamics in the region that it must navigate as it does so. Scott interviews Annelle Sheline about her work on the war in Yemen. Sheline says that negotiating an end to the war has proven difficult, since both the UN framework and the U.S.-Saudi mentality is totally inconsistent with the situation on the ground. Neither will confront the fact that the Houthi "rebels" have actually been in control of most of the country for the last few years already, and the Hadi "government" is really a group of men in a hotel room in Saudi Arabia. Asking for concessions from the Houthis at this stage simply isn't realistic. And so the status quo continues: a near-total blockade, supposedly to stop weapons from getting into the hands of militants, but which really just prevents food and basic medicine from getting to a civilian population suffering from a devastating famine and multiple outbreaks of otherwise easily preventable illnesses. Discussed on the show: "Washington Has Yemen Policy Backward" (Foreign Policy) Annelle Sheline is a Research Fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute and an expert on religious and political authority in the Middle East and North Africa. Today we’re very lucky to be joined by Annelle Sheline, Research Fellow for the Middle East at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft and a non-resident fellow at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Annelle’s research focuses on religious authority in the Middle East, particularly the intersection of religious and national identities in the Arab monarchies, and she’s done fieldwork in Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Yemen.Jordanian King Abdullah II addressing the European Parliament in January 2020, which explains the lack of masks and the general failure to socially distance (European Parliament via Wikimedia Commons)One of the countries in that list has been particularly newsworthy of late, and somewhat surprisingly it’s Jordan. Annelle is here to provide some context for the alleged coup attempt that Jordanian authorities claimed to have thwarted over the weekend, including an examination of the key question: has former crown prince Hamzah bin Hussein really been plotting with unnamed foreign governments to overthrow his half-brother, King Abdullah II (shown above)? Suffice to say we’re both a bit skeptical. Annelle’s Responsible Statecraft piece on the coup and its potential to serve as a justification for a broad political crackdown is available here and you can find her on Twitter here. Annelle Sheline from the Quincy Institute joins me to talk about how authoritarian regimes in the Middle East title themselves "moderate" to stay in power and how US foreign policy influences this. We also talked about Biden's decision to withdrawal offensive military support from Saudi Arabia in Yemen (while still supporting Saudi Arabia defensively), and the decision to remove the FTO designation of the Houthis.
