There are around 350,000 synthetic chemicals in use today and only a small fraction have been robustly tested for their long-term effects on our health. Many of these are used in manufacturing plastics and microplastics – the production of which has doubled since 2008 and is projected to triple by 2060. Unknowns remain, but research is suggesting pervasive exposures to these manufactured substances is shaping human health. In particular, links are being identified with a range of non-communicable diseases, including some cancer types, metabolic disorders, neurological conditions and reproductive and developmental issues. So, what do we know about how the chemical environment is influencing our health? Could AI and other emerging technologies shed new light on the effects of synthetic substances? And what does it all mean for regulation and wider policy protecting public health? To discuss, our Chief Executive Jennifer Dixon is joined by: Tracey Woodruff, Professor at University of California, San Francisco, and Director of the Program on Reproductive Health and the Environment (PRHE). Thomas Hartung, Professor at Johns Hopkins University, and Director of the Centre for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT). Show notes Woodruff et al (2025). We're back again today with our Warm Hearts, Warm Homes series, and this time, exploring how food assistance helps create warm, stable homes for our neighbors in need. Food insecurity is a big problem in the United States, as 47 million people—including 14 million children—do not have enough to eat and don't know where their next meal will come from. Beyond that figure, many more people—estimated in the millions by Feeding America—do not meet the government's definition of food insecure but still turn to the charitable sector for support. And in Gillette, Wyoming, that includes The Salvation Army. Jenny Hartung, who leads The Salvation Army's Service Extension Unit in Gillette, has witnessed the evolution of need and Salvation Army assistance over the past decade. What started as a single shelf of emergency food has grown into a 15,000-square-foot facility that's warming both hearts and homes through food assistance, social services, and soon, a bridge housing program for women. Today, Jenny is here to share how The Salvation Army in this small town of some 30,000 people is making a big impact—distributing over 2,000 food boxes every month and showing us all what's possible when a community comes together to care for its neighbors. The owner of Pearl Street Books, Beth Hartung, and La Crescent’s public library director, Jess Witkins, stopped in the WIZM studio to discuss, what else, books, including the best of 2024, book bans, reading as a New Year’s resolution, and what’s changed in popularity over the year and years. This is part of a series of La Crosse Talk PMs about New Year’s resolutions, as we discussed a couple of different strategies to help get you reading more — and how to stick with it. We also talked about a shift in popular genres over the years — including to fantasy to horror to unsolved murders — plus what’s been most popular in 2024 and what is a must read this year, and ever. We discussed book bans, how Wisconsin and Minnesota have handled those and making sense of why they happen. Other things we hit on included buying used and the two instances when you should buy new, plus reading physical books versus a digital copy. Hartung has owned Pearl Street Books downtown for three years, and talked about some of the events she’s been holding there to make the store more inclusive and a third space. Witkins has been with the library systems eight years and talks about programs they have and what’s been popular to the public there, lately.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Seventy-nine years ago, the Truman administration dropped atom bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, instantly killing approximately 100,000 innocent civilians. Host Robert Scheer calls these horrific incidents among the major instances of terror ever committed in human history. Bill Hartung of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft joins Scheer Intelligence to discuss the history and legacy of nuclear weapons in relation to the military industrial complex, as a $2 trillion effort from the Pentagon to build “a new generation of nuclear-armed missiles, bombers, and submarines” takes place. The central question underlying the conversation is asked by Scheer; “How could they, in good conscience, be talking about modernizing the devil's weapon?” Hartung claims that the Pentagon and arms manufacturers are doing so under the guise of deterrence, but also because of false stories of controllable nuclear war and even the “evil” consideration that it may be necessary to use nuclear weapons on certain populations. “I think some of the folks promoting this stuff would like to believe that they're not putting the future of humanity at risk. So they kind of tell themselves these stories, which they then tell to the public and hope they can persuade them.” In the past, the horror of nuclear war was widely acknowledged to some extent by the public and the political class alike, as even Reagan said a nuclear war could never be won and should never be fought. Hartung claims that the belief that nuclear war could be winnable was previously “pushed off the agenda,” but it “seems to be back.” Despite movies like Oppenheimer, which to some extent injected the issue of nuclear war into public discussion, citizens and the media remain largely uninterested and unaware of the dangers of nuclear war, especially with regard to the war in Ukraine. This is reflected in the opinions of the American political class. Hartung points out that “if you go to Washington, there's this sort of atmosphere that, if you're for reducing these things, you know, you're the one who's unrealistic. The logic is flipped on its head ...”

She shares the turning point that led to her embracing the intermittent fasting lifestyle after her weight crept up in her 40s, including unsuccessful attempts with other dieting strategies like Weight Watchers and the 21-day fix program. Inspired by her cousin's Facebook post and armed with resources her cousin shared with her, such as Gin's book Fast. Feast. Repeat., Stefanie began her fasting journey on November 14, 2022.Throughout the conversation, Stefanie highlights the significant emotional and physical changes she has experienced since adopting intermittent fasting as a lifestyle. From experiencing an “appetite reset” that led to a healthier relationship with food, to enjoying softer skin and reduced discomfort from sore lymph nodes and sciatic nerve pain, she enthusiastically describes the multitude of benefits IF has brought to her. The discussion delves deep into the emotional empowerment and sense of life simplification Stefanie has gained, contrasting her life now to the times when other diets left her feeling restricted and less confident.Gin and Stefanie connect over their similar intermittent fasting schedules and the flexibility IF offers, revealing how their eating windows of four and five hours respectively have become a natural part of their lifestyle. They touch on the broader discussions around aging, societal pressures for women, and the balance between looking good and feeling good as they mature. Not shying away from the challenging aspects of intermittent fasting, they share personal insights into past dieting experiences, highlighting the need to pay attention to hunger and satiety cues.Ending the episode with sound advice for newcomers, Stefanie encourages listeners to treat intermittent fasting as an adventure rather than a chore. Emphasizing patience and the importance of tuning into one's body, she reflects on her own fasting journey and how it has led to a more intuitive relationship with food and her well-being.Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her latest bestseller 28-Day Fast Start Day-By-Day, the Ultimate Guide to Starting (or Restarting) Your Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle so it Sticks, New York Times Bestseller, Fast. The Israeli attack on a civilian aid convoy, which killed seven World Central Kitchen workers, has pushed U.S. officials to entertain policy alternatives to unconditional aid to Israel. Bill Hartung, national security and U.S. foreign policy analyst at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, discusses the Biden administration's weapons sales to Israel, many of which have not been reported to U.S. Congress. Hartung addresses the role of venture capital firms in shaping the U.S. defense industry, firms which advocate the development of dual-use technology or artificial intelligence as optimized tools to wage warfare.

Oujia boards over the years have been very controversial. Some people think its a method to speak to the devil while others feel its a way to connect with ancestors. Back in 1100 AD Oujia board were used in healing practices and rituals until scammers got ahold of the ouija board and started lying to people about what the board was saying. After the scammers were exposed people said the board was “Demonic” and no one should use the board. But despite the 50/50 opinions about the ouija board today, people still use it and some even on a daily basis. And 49 year-old Donald Hartung was one of those people. Donald claimed to be a Wiccan and had been practicing witchcraft for 3 years. He also claimed to have a close relationship with his family and visited the family home where his mother and 2 brothers lived, every Tuesday to make them dinner. But on July 28th, 2015 police would be called to the family home after one of the brothers, Richard Hartung, hadn't showed up to work and his co-workers couldn't get ahold of him. When the police entered the home that's when they would find the horrific and bloody scene of the murdered family lying underneath a pile of clothes. Donald was the only family member alive and was brought into questioning. And it wasn't until then, that the police started to slowly uncover Donalds real relationship with the family and the greedy motive for the murders. Learn more about your ad choices. Angel Scale Biotech: Learn More Paul Hartung returns to talk about how to fund promising biotech and life science companies. He continues his conversation from his previous episode discussing his past experience with angel investing. Sponsored by Purdue University entrepreneurship and Peter Fasse, patent attorney at Fish and Richardson. Highlights: Sal Daher Introduces Paul Hartung "... Tell me the story of the first syndicated angel funding here in New England..." "'... there's a bunch of guys like you and me who've been successful in business, who are starting to get together.' He said, 'I just joined a group called Launchpad...'" "... I was CEO from the start and chairman, the president and secretary and [laughter] and all the offices..." "... The story here is that technologies are coming out of labs that are amazing, that are just astonishing, that could do things that couldn't be done 10 years ago by any stretch of the imagination. It's not one-off, they're multiplying. The cost of developing this technology is a coming down..." "... how do I support angels? Due diligence I think is part of it, creating due diligence, and I think part of it is also syndication..." "... What is the end game? Who would be the strategic partners that might end up acquirers or might license the technology...?" Pros and Cons of Grant Funding ".. the timing of strategics is not the timing of startups..." "... I think there's a lot of room for Angel-friendly venture funds that will work with Angels and will help bring Angels over from software investing into the life sciences, perhaps initially for digital health, but eventually, in wet lab..." Advice to the Audience "...Don't just have a purely science team. You need to have someone who's going to be your business representative if you will..." Topics: angel investing strategies, biotech, building wealth
Angel Scale Biotech: Learn More Paul Hartung is an angel investor involved in the life sciences field. Here, he discusses how he helps build companies such as Leuko, Clairways, Verisense, and others in the MedTech space. Sponsored by Purdue University entrepreneurship and Peter Fasse, patent attorney at Fish and Richardson. Highlights: Sal Daher Introduces Paul Hartung Leuko Labs "... Something dark goes through, that's a red blood. Something light goes through, that's a white blood cell. Then they count that, and then it can come up with immunocompromised, or low leukocyte count, or normal leukocyte count..." Upcoming Milestones for Leuko Clairways "... That's an area of great interest for me is academic founders in the life sciences, taking their technology from the lab into the clinic, or into the market. It requires understanding the technology, and it also requires understanding the market..." Verisense Xander "... Well, he's basically creating a software that interprets the voice of the person who's speaking to the wearer of the glasses, and creates a caption, which projected on the lens. You can caption what people are saying to you..." Paul's Backstory How Paul Got Into Life Sciences 3Com "... The whole premise of the technology was that you could take people who were suspect of the disease, and rather than immediately going in for really expensive brain imaging tests, which actually involve exposure to radiation and you can only do them very infrequently, this is something that could be done in a general practitioner's office, doesn't even have to be done in a hospital...: Sonivance Advice to the Audience Topics: angel investing strategies, product, venture capital
