Scott talks to William Hartung about America's nuclear policy and the shocking profit motives that end up determining it. Hartung draws particular attention to land-based ICBMs, which, he explains, aren't nearly as effective, since they're fixed in one place, and for that same reason are especially vulnerable to the possibility of an accidental launch. When a country's government thinks their missile silos are being attacked, they have very little time to decide whether to launch those missiles in a counter-strike before losing the opportunity forever. This is why cutting back on ICBMs is one of the most important steps in reducing the risk of nuclear war. Unfortunately, leading voices in the U.S. government actually want to expand the nuclear arsenal, and since the money for such programs is often spread out in local political districts, opposition can be nearly impossible. Discussed on the show: "Inside the ICBM Lobby: Special Interests Or the National Interest?" It’s January, and people all over the world are celebrating the end of the year 2020. It was harrowing for so many reasons, not the least of which was our year with the Coronavirus. Thousands of American families who have lost loved ones and millions lost their jobs too. But there is hope on the horizon as millions of Americans have started receiving the new vaccines. Three options have already been released and a fourth is on it’s way.The speed with which our scientific community has identified the virus and developed these vaccines is unprecedented. Never before have researchers been able to conduct thousands of tests in such a short period of time. In fact, it may be that the biggest impact over the long term will be the revolution in research science that made this unprecedented speed possible.Today’s Guest, Dr. Thomas Hartung is the Director of the Center for Alternatives to Animal Testing (CAAT), a laboratory for developmental neurotoxicity research based on genomics and metabolomics at Johns Hopkins University. Hartung has been leading a movement within the world of research to move away from animal testing and utilize new technologies that can save millions of dollars and lead to faster testing with more accurate results. After speaking with James Lane about developing we became friends and started talking to different developers etc. Now although James is young, he has a scientific persona and can hear how enthusiast he is for alchemy! He loved it so much he started developing for customers and runs his own lab! James talks to us about why he’s different from other labs and spends time talking to us about making your own chemicals. He’s got some top-secret plans he’s working on and has an interesting future ahead of him. I love his passion for pushing film, controlling contrast and grain. What’s interesting about James lab (zone imaging lab) is you can choose the developer! He even has explanations on his website what each one does. I think this is a great unique selling point and makes him stand out. In this episode, we continue our discussion about working moms and the emergent need for support. We think there are two critical components to get right when it comes to being a working parent; Communication and Expectations. We lay out the importance of communicating with your partner, your boss, your co-workers, and your kids. Kacey asks listeners to, "Please ask for help-people love to give it to you, including your kids, but you have to make it evident what you are asking for". Sometimes dads don't know the extent of everything we do. Good managers would rather know the truth of your situation because the well being of their employees matters. We know women are not being supported properly because of the burnout, anxiety, and overwhelm they are suffering. We further explore expectations and how to be intentional about them. We get busy concentrating on daily tasks and we forget what is most important to us. Corporations need to address working parents. The struggle is finally being recognized EVERYWHERE. We are all asking, "Why isn't anybody listening"? Companies can't go back to business as usual after the pandemic is over. Kacey says "We really need to take care of each other". Kacey Hartung is one of the valued team members of Cara Pollard Coaching. She is a working mom, manager, and life coach who brings a wealth of experience, knowledge, and expertise to this discussion. Listen as we discuss the many trials and tribulations exhausted, working moms are facing. We discuss all of it and offer some suggestions for helping working moms-especially at this time. It all starts with communication and acknowledging how hard this is! Kacey's created a quote card deck and one card is aptly named: The working mom SOS- Aka Save our Sanity! To order and find out more: https://www.thegamecrafter.com/games/working-mom Moms are worried about teaching their kids online while working from home. They worry about it all, even the seemingly small fact that their child didn’t learn to make the “L” properly in cursive and their kids will be behind. We examine the definition of a good parent, success, and the impossible dream of having it all- at least at the same time. Cara shares what she often tells her clients- “Failure is not an option, in terms of the relationship with your child "! “What does success mean to you?” Kacey asks her clients. She continues, “What is success? Working 40 hours a week and being done might be your definition and that’s OK because your definition will change with every phase of raising your child.” Why? Because she says- “It’s all a phase and only phase” it really isn’t forever but that’s easy to see in hindsight. Some of Casey’s clients and employees have told her that they have to strive for that next gold ring but young moms may have to say to themselves that they must adjust their choices and if that includes striving for the next ring then they need to get more help! If not, they may have to go into a neutral state at work - a status quo zone -and both choices are great! Companies and parents have to adapt and adjust. We get tied up in rules and that everything should look orderly and remain stringent. We have to recognize rules will change and we will survive them- whatever they are -because we have to. That includes what school might look like in the Fall. We know one thing, it won’t look normal! So now we have to move forward and be flexible. We hope to offer compassion, advice, and a little relief for working moms. We see you, we hear you, we applaud you!!! Please reach out with comments or suggestions. Thomas Hartung, MD, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, delivers an insightful overview of his work studying toxicity testing improvements, organoids, and advancing technologies. Dr. Hartung has departmental affiliations with the Environmental Health and Engineering and Molecular Microbiology and Immunology departments at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Hartung's work is heavily focused on creating a paradigm shift in toxicity testing to improve overall public health. Dr. Hartung has been an integral part of the implementation of the 2007 NRC vision document known as, “Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century – a vision and a strategy.” Dr. Hartung discusses his background, and the road he has taken to arrive at his current place as a leading voice in the discussions concerning toxicity and animal testing. He explains that the technological opportunities have advanced significantly in the last few years. Dr. Hartung discusses ‘organ on a chip' technologies and other advanced tissue, etc. work. As he explains, this field is permanently moving. The advancement of organoids, which are small, self-organized 3D tissue cultures that are actually derived from stem cells, is changing the way research is done. The research doctor talks about the importance of toxicity testing, cellular communication and tissue technology, as well as genomics and metabolomics, discussing nutrients, types of cells, and the coming research that will certainly advance the field. Learning from current experiences, he explains that the ‘human on a chip' technologies will continue to change as more research is done. Organoids are being used to test various compounds to observe the relative toxicity, but they are utilized for other reasons as well, such as modeling diseases. As Dr. Hartung states, the future will likely bring these types of systems into all kinds of toxicity testing, and replace animal testing altogether if possible.
