With a brutal heat wave sweeping across the nation, sky-high utility bills are about to hit local communities. But according to a new study, three out of four Americans aren't prepared for this financial strain. Scott Baradell of DuraPlas talks about the study here. The 2024 DuraPlas Summer Cooling Survey was conducted by by the third-party platform Pollfish and found that: * 74% percent of Americans say they don't have a plan for dealing with summer energy costs, with nearly half (48%) saying they'll have to cut back on dining out and entertainment if necessary to cover the increase. * 77% said they expect some level of increase in their summer energy bills, and 63% report that they've already made lifestyle adjustments to cover the extra costs–with nearly a quarter saying those adjustments have been significant. The good news is that 32% say regular maintenance of their HVAC system helps them better control these costs. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/viewfromthepugh/message

I. Steve Kirsch is an inventor and businessman most famous for developing the optical mouse. More recently, he's become an anti-COVID-vaccine activist. He has many different arguments on his Substack, of which one especially caught my eye: He got Pollfish, a reputable pollster, to ask questions about people's COVID experiences, including whether they thought any family members had died from COVID or from COVID vaccines. Results here: 7.5% of people said a household member had died of COVID 8.5% of people said a household member had died from the vaccine. All other statistics were normal and confirmed that this was a fair sample of the population. In particular, about 75% were vaccinated (suggesting that they weren't just polling hardcore anti-vaxxers). https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/failure-to-replicate-anti-vaccine

More Than Half of Employees in Ireland Suffer From Productivity Anxiety

Workhuman have announced new findings from its Human Workplace Index, which found that 64% of employees in Ireland are suffering from productivity anxiety. Recognition is a key element in helping to improve employees' wellbeing, with 57% saying they would feel less anxious if they received proper recognition for their work. The research also found that although 58% of employees said they feel more productive at the office, a gender disparity exists in perceived in-office productivity. While 71% of male employees felt they accomplished more on in-office days, only 33% of female employees reported the same. Despite this, women are more likely to work in the office five days a week compared to men, with 58% of women required to be in the office versus 30% of men. The survey of 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland was commissioned by Workhuman and conducted by Pollfish to gain insights into workplace sentiment, productivity and wellbeing. Additionally, while work-life balance is highlighted as the most important aspect of workplace wellbeing for 65% of Irish employees and 31% believe that companies facilitating work-life balance are more successful in fostering employee-employer trust, there are significant disparities in the distribution of wellness benefits between men and women. Nearly half of employees report receiving wellness benefits or perks in addition to standard benefits and say they improve their overall wellbeing, but men are more than twice as likely to have access to perks like gym memberships, healthy snacks, and in-office wellness spaces compared to women. Niamh Graham, Senior Vice President of Global Human Experience, Workhuman, said: "With ways of working constantly evolving, it is not surprising that employees may be feeling more anxious about whether they are achieving enough at work, and being noticed for it. With recognition being the number one factor employees stated can help with their anxiety, leaders must start prioritizing this to foster a supportive work environment. Our survey also shows a discrepancy between men and women when it comes to working arrangements and wellbeing perks. With more than half of women saying they are more productive at home, but most of them being required to work five days a week on-site, it's clear that leadership needs to be more in tune with the individual needs of its employees when designing flexible work policies and wellbeing benefits packages. Understanding and addressing these gaps is essential for companies to foster a fair, supportive, and productive work environment for all employees"

Workhuman research finds a quarter of employees in Ireland are slowed down by under-skilled colleagues

Workhuman, the company revolutionising the way employees celebrate, connect with and appreciate each other in the workplace, has announced new findings from its Human Workplace Index, which found that employees in Ireland are struggling to meet the demands of their jobs due to skills gaps. The research found that 70% of employees say they work with one or more people whose skill sets do not meet the criteria of the role. This is resulting in 24% of employees saying they are being slowed down because they have to provide a lot of support to those colleagues. The survey of 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland was commissioned by Workhuman and conducted by Pollfish to gain insights into company cultures and the employee experience, including the impact of skills gaps on employees. The research showed that while significant skills gaps prevail in Ireland, employees are proactively seeking to upskill. Some 86% of those surveyed said that they are aiming to learn at least one new skill this year. Almost half (48%) believe this will help them to uncover new job opportunities, while 47% are seeking a salary increase or promotion. A further 20% are motivated to learn a new skill because they are planning a career change. As employees seek self-improvement, Workhuman's research suggests that the majority of businesses are doing the same. The study found that 80% of employees report that their company is making efforts to foster a positive work culture. Of these, 64% say that they are succeeding but 36% say they are not. The survey showed that according to employees (cited by 40%) appreciation and recognition is most important factor that contributes to a positive workplace culture, followed by open and transparent communication (32%). Interestingly, just 11% said opportunities for growth and development influence their perception of their workplace culture. Reflecting the widespread focus on company culture, almost three-quarters (72%) of employees say that their organisation has a defined set of company values. However, Workhuman's research suggests that there is a disconnect between employers' intentions and their employees' experiences. Some 29% of employees who are aware of defined company values in their organisation say that these values don't match the culture they experience day-to-day. Niamh Graham, Senior Vice President of Global Human Experience, Workhuman: "Leaders across industries have noted the skills shortage and the potential ramifications for businesses. This data reveals that this isn't just a concern for executives; individual contributors are feeling the effects of this as well and are being vocal about their desire to expand their expertise. "There has been an explosion of new technologies in recent years that are specifically driven by how we work, live, spend, and interact. In turn, roles and job requirements across artificial intelligence, eCommerce, information security, data, video communications, user experience, and more, have grown enormously and we are left to play catch-up. Companies need to rethink their hiring, skills, and talent development strategies, and adopting agile HR practices is key. In addition, platforms which give insight to where your talent pool is are now more necessary than ever. "In addition, it's encouraging to see that there is an increased emphasis among businesses on employee engagement, which is leading to greater investments in their cultures and their people. However, it is important that all strategies are regularly reviewed to ensure that they don't just sound nice; businesses must be able to say definitively that they are having a real, positive impact on the workforce." Workhuman, the company revolutionising the way employees celebrate, connect with and appreciate each other in the workplace, has announced new findings from its Human Workplace Index, which found that 1 in 4 (27%) of employees expect they will be responding to work emails over Christmas. While work pressures are getting to employees, more than half (58%) of employees in Ireland say they are also stressed about the financial burden of buying Christmas gifts this year. The survey of 1,000 full-time employees in Ireland was commissioned by Workhuman and conducted by Pollfish to gain insights into attitudes and expectations around the holidays, including how work cultures support employees during the season, as well as gifting and giving habits. The research suggests that many find it difficult to take a break over the holidays. Some 22% of employees say they will not be able to fully switch off from work over their Christmas holidays while 28% admitted that their large workload would prevent them from taking as much time off as they would like over the holidays. The survey also found that, though the spirit of the season is alive and well, many employees may find this a stressful time of year. Per the research, employees expect to spend an average of 974 each on Christmas gifts this year. More than half of employees (54%) responded that they feel stressed out about buying holiday gifts - however this doesn't seem to be hindering the amount of people they shop for, with nearly a quarter of employees saying they will buy holiday presents for up to 10 people. Workhuman's survey found that as people get into the festive spirit, the majority of employees who receive end-of-year bonuses are using them to pay for Christmas presents. More than a quarter (27%) of respondents who receive end-of-year bonuses say they are essential for affording Christmas presents, while a further 53% said they alleviate some of the financial burden. Despite this, over half (51%) of respondents would prefer to receive smaller spot bonuses throughout the year rather than one larger lump sum at the end of the year. Many employees expressed an interest in employee recognition as a means of supplementing their Christmas budgets. Workhuman's survey shows that 66% of employees would like to use points from an employee recognition programme to buy gifts. Employees are using Workhuman's recognition platform in this way, with smartwatches, air fryers and headphones among the top purchases for those based in Europe. When it comes to gifting trends in the workplace, 44% of employees receive Christmas gifts from their colleagues and 27% do a 'Secret Santa' at work. Some 32% get presents from their employer or manager and, of these, 95% say they usually, or always, like them. However, 12% admitted they usually re-gift them to someone else. Niamh Graham, Senior Vice President of Global Human Experience, Workhuman: "Our research has shown that while this is an exciting time of year, it can also be a stressful one. Financial, familial, and professional pressures can impact employees over the holiday season. When done right, company culture can help to alleviate some of this stress, rather than being a cause of it. Ensuring employees are using their paid time off and have a solid coverage plan so they can truly unplug over the holidays is a practice leadership should demonstrate and encourage. "Employee experience initiatives can also help get at some of this stress; spot bonuses and redeemable recognition points can be particularly meaningful for employees, especially as this is also the Season of Giving and a great time to show gratitude for others in your organisation, building up a supportive company culture." Welcome back to Season 6 of Intellicast. We promise not to keep you over an hour this episode! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are breaking down the latest market research news and sharing some updates ranging from football to flatscreens. The episode kicks-off with an overview of the upcoming conference season. You can catch Brian Lamar and Bonnie the Bulldog at several different conferences in the next few months! The guys then share an update on the ESOMAR election scandal. Ray Poynter posted on LinkedIn that ESOMAR was taken to court in the Netherlands over its treatment of the CEO/Director General and lost the case, reinstating the CEO/DG from the start of January. Unlike what many others (and ourselves) were hoping, this situation will probably not be going away anytime soon. The next news story is that Pollfish has launched a new AI-enabled survey creation tool that claims to generate a ‘professional-grade' survey questionnaire based on a single sentence in under 30 seconds. While this can't replace a great questionnaire writer, it might save them some time. At this point, the guys might need to introduce a “Howard's Legislative Update” segment. Brian and Brian discuss a new bill introduced in Oregon that would require some insights companies, specifically sample providers, to register as “data brokers” with the state. Intellicast is also officially petitioning to bring Howard to Hilton Head for the Insights Association Annual Conference. In the final segment, the Brians talk about InnovateMR's acquisition of Ivy Exec. They also look at a report in the UK that found that marketing budgets have grown but spend in research has declined; this may be mirrored in the US market. They wrap it up with Savanta's acquisition of Infosurv, the Georgia-based full-service MR firm. Thanks for listening! Don't forget to reach out and give us your suggestions for the new intro music! With the growing move towards a hybrid and remote work environment, more and more people are relying on their smart devices to get work done. Keeping track of all of these devices, and ensuring that they are being used in a very secure manner, can be a challenging proposition. A recent survey finds organizations unprepared and overwhelmed with managing thousands or hundreds of thousands of these endpoint devices. https://www.linkedin.com/in/mikermcneil/ (Mike McNeill, CEO, Fleet Device Management), sheds light on some of these critical security issues and addresses questions such as: How does an organization manage its devices? Do they know if their devices are compliant and secure? Do they have ways to query them to learn more about their status in real-time? Mike also offers recommendations on how to prepare for the future of device management. Time Stamps 01:28 -- Share with the listeners some highlights of your professional journey. 02:11 -- Let's talk about the motivation for the study. 03:54 -- The study is fairly recent; it was started on February 25, 2022. It was conducted online via Pollfish using organic sampling. And when I look at the industry is represented. It's pretty comprehensive. You all didn't leave out any sector. Am I correct? 04:52 -- Were you surprised by the survey findings relating to the state of device management? 06:48 -- Talking about managing the devices and keeping track of the devices, I read here that only a quarter of the sample population said that their devices are fully enrolled and upgraded. You know, that's worrisome. Why do you think organizations would allow that to happen? 07:54 -- So, if I'm understanding you correctly, the use of multiple operating systems and multiple platforms is part of the problem when it comes to tracking the devices, right? 08:33 -- Another finding that got my attention is that one of the best practices is to have a good Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) policy. And to be more specific, 32% said, having a documented BYOD policy is a crucial best practice for their MDM (mobile device management) strategy. Can you expand on this? 09:57 -- BYOD, Bring Your Own devices, as an approach has its pros and cons. It was interesting to read that 32% of the respondents felt that having a documented BYOD policy is a crucial best practice for their MDM strategy. What are your thoughts? 11:49-- Another best practice documented here is measuring point-in-time compliance across all devices. Share with the listeners what you mean by point-in-time compliance or real-time compliance across devices. 13:56 -- How feasible is it to try and automate the patching process and thereby remove the responsibility (of patching) from the users? 17:51 -- Another finding that I find interesting is that multi-factor authentication becoming a top priority for 2022. The reason I find it interesting is I would assume that by now, multi-factor authentication would be a standard. I wonder why the delay in the adoption of a security mechanism that is universally accepted to be a very robust protective measure. What are your thoughts? 19:35 -- What were some unanticipated or unexpected findings? 20:59 -- I think the extent to which security and IT teams can work together and appreciate the significance of each other's work would make the development and implementation process more effective and efficient. What do you think? 23:12 -- What would you say to organizations interested in improving device management? How should they prepare themselves? 25:46 -- Going back to the report, where you're talking about preparing for the future of device management, you have several recommendations, one of which is to start managing containers. Can you expand on that? 28:21 -- Another recommendation in this report is to protect remote workers with zero trust, TLS, and multi-factor authentication. I'd like you to expand on this TLS when you suggest " move away from VPNs to granular proxies...

This podcast interview focuses on the story behind Pollfish – and their approach to reinvent market research for a new era by shortening cycle times to get faster, high-quality feedback from customers. My guest is John Papadakis, Founder and CEO at PollfishJohn started his career as an Android developer. He’s passionate about platforms and businesses that scale and has always had a particular focus on the mobile domain. In 2011 he co-founded Pajap, a service which allowed to create native Android applications, that didn’t need update or installation thereby combining the best of native app world and web app world In 2013 he founded Pollfish, a platform that provides brands a revolutionary way to learn, communicate and interact with existing and prospective customers. That inspired me, and hence I invited John to my podcast. We explore their journey to create a new category and the challenges to grow customer trust by establishing a large enough audience of close to a billion consumers . We also discuss his secrets of growing the Pollfish business – and how simplification and trust in people have been a great asset in that. Here are some of his quotes:Essentially Pollfish started because we had apps, and we want to monetize them. But advertising didn't work for our apps. And we were thinking: ‘There must be a better way to monetize those apps, and that way to be less intrusive since we don't want to spam our users.’So, we created the Pollfish library first, and we saw that people responded to surveys within the app. In a few days, we had hundreds of thousands of people. So, the company started from a need to monetize, and from the opportunity that the mobile app ecosystem (in 2013) was a new distribution channel for market research. It's a two-sided marketplace: you need supply and demand. And you've got to have both. So, we started with the supply, focus there for a couple of years, and then we launched Pollfish as it is today to solve the father decision making problem.During this interview, you will learn four things:Why – if you want to boost momentum - it’s key to focus your go-to-market on your core strengths and true values – and avoid anything that’s outside of that scope How smart packaging can enable you to change perception and with that open complete new market opportunitiesWhy your customers don't want to worry about ‘figuring your messaging out’. They want it simple – so simple they can share it with their boss. Why throwing way an impressive KPI sheet and focus on just 2 numbers gave focus and boosted creativity amongst all staffFor more information about the guest from this week:John PapadakisWebsite Pollfish See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The scene is a newly familiar one. After 10 weeks in quarantine, you’d be hard pressed to find someone who hasn’t done dance cardio over Instagram Live. YouTube data shows that average daily views for videos with “home workout” in the title increased over 340% since March 13, and Google searches for at-home exercise spiked around the beginning of quarantine. Digital classes can make exercising easier — according to a survey conducted by Pollfish on behalf of the Bustle Trends Group, 33% of Gen Z and Millennials are working out more since they’ve been stuck at home. But just as demand for virtual fitness has never been higher, instructors and experts say coronavirus is accelerating changes in workout culture — an increase in cheap, virtual options and a desire for convenience — that were set in motion way before the pandemic. “A lot of smaller studios are entirely dependent on foot traffic in order to pay the rent,” Natalia Petrzela, Ph.D., a professor of history at The New School and author of the forthcoming Fit Nation: How Americans Embraced Exercise As the Government Abandoned It, tells Bustle. After a few months of zero income from in-person classes, she says, smaller, independent studios just can’t make it. As Sadie Kurzban, founder of 305 Fitness, which has been offering free dance cardio classes on YouTube, previously told Bustle, her business is 2% of what it had been pre-pandemic. “The studios that can are pivoting to digital in a way that will cushion the blow for some of them,” Petrzela says. “But it's hard because there's so much free digital content right now.” Even if boutique workouts reopened tomorrow, people might not immediately feel safe returning to their favorite circuit training class. (Though in some states businesses like gyms are starting to reopen to jump-start the economy, public health experts warn they're not exactly safe yet.) While 65% of 24- to 39-year-olds said workout classes are the activity they’re most excited to return to once social distancing restrictions are lifted, according to a survey of 2,000 people conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Bustle, they’re also what 49% of respondents are most hesitant about. Kirsten, 22, was grateful that her gym paused membership fees, after she felt like the chain wasn't taking proper precautions when the outbreak hit. “I’m going to be very concerned about what I’m touching,” says Steph, 33, of going back to her workout routine. While closures and enhanced hygiene precautions will impact the physical ways people exercise, the way we think about fitness will change, too. For some, it'll be all about convenience. Anna, 26, wants to return to in-person 305 classes after keeping up with instructors digitally, but if the streamed workouts continue, that might change things. “It might be harder to motivate myself to go out when I'm feeling lazy and know I can get 60% of the full experience from my home,” she tells Bustle. Mady, 32, was never really a “home workout person,” but now sees it becoming part of her schedule after quarantine. “It’s easy and quick, if you don’t have a lot of time,” she tells Bustle. A digital experience is also a welcoming one. “Online fitness is a great way to be more inclusive and reach people across the board, as opposed to just the people in these big cities,” Bethany C. Meyers, founder of the be.come project, a digital, membership-based workout community, tells Bustle. For people who are new to working out, or wouldn’t otherwise feel comfortable going to a gym, getting into exercise at home during the pandemic can help determine what makes them feel best, they add. No one I spoke to cited price as a huge concern, but there’s no question that digital options are cheap. Just 9% of respondents to a March survey of 500 BDG Hive members said they’re paying for streaming workouts. Anna discontinued her $219/month 305 membership and instead does the free classes, while tipping instructors. Mady doesn’t mind spending money on working out, but she’s getting used to paying less. With nearly 15% of Americans unemployed, and many more taking pay reductions or furloughs, it might be hard to justify buying the 10-pack of Pilates reformer classes for $350 when you can do a YouTube video. “When we make [workouts] available for free, people don’t see it as valuable,” Helen Phelan, a freelance fitness instructor, tells Bustle. “You could argue that these instructors who are going live for free every day are getting the feeling of giving to their community, but at what cost?” The industry-wide pivot to digital has been coming for a while, Petrzela and Phelan note, and current conditions will only exacerbate that trend. Peloton offered new users a 90-day free trial on its app in March; now, a surge in bike sales has driven up its stock prices, Marketwatch reported. Brynn Jinnett Putnam, CEO of MIRROR, told CNN Business that sales of the company’s $1,495 device have more than doubled since March. High-end products like these necessarily have a limited consumer base. “People are going to have very real financial constraints,” Petrzela says. But she adds that “spending on fitness has evolved in our collective minds from a luxury [to] an expense.” Basically, people will justify spending what they can, whether that’s paying for Peloton’s app instead of buying a bike outright ($12.99/month); signing up for another platform like Aaptiv ($14.99/month); or doing donation-based or sliding scale classes with indie instructors. We won’t know what the full effects of COVID-19 on the workout economy will be for years. But more than getting your heart rate up, more than the mental health benefits, many people work out to be part of a community. And that’s not always possible when you’re doing bicep curls with a can of beans. “I miss the true aura of 305,” Anna says. “I think if there was one day when all of a sudden we knew everything was safe and the world returned to normal, many people would rush back out. That first in-person class would be an incredible release of pent up energy. But I don't know if that is realistic.” Kristen misses having an instructor adjust her posture, as well as the accountability that a group fitness setting provides. “I miss being able to feed off other people's energy, too.” “You can Google how to do a squat,” Phelan says. “People go to classes or instructors repeatedly because they identify with them. And it is an experience.”

Prior to founding Pollfish, John had worked in technology, developing a platform that made building Android apps easy. John, thank you very much for being on the Happy Market Research Podcast today. [00:02:01] Thank you so much for your time, and for inviting me. [00:02:04] I’d like to start out with this marquee question of ours: Tell us a little bit about your parents and how they have affected your career. [00:02:12] First, some background: I’m Greek. I was born in Athens, Greece, and then moved to Germany until I was five years old, and then ended up in a small town one hour away from Athens. Both of my parents are retired now, but they were elementary school teachers. So for the first three years of elementary school, they happened to be my teachers as well. Twenty years ago, being a teacher in a small town in Greece was a really respectful role for the local community. So I grew up in an environment where my parents were very respected by the community, and the other way around. Especially my father was very diligent: he would not have any task undone; he was a very responsible person, and still is. So one of the key things I take away from my parents is “being diligent” and “being consistent”. The other thing is that my father was also leading the school, so he was running a small business. I didn’t understand that at the time; but now seeing back—his having a proper P&L, and having employees—maybe some of that background was passed on to me. The most important one is that they were teachers, so one of their main responsibilities was to understand their kids. So I had infinite moral and financial support from them to follow my crazy dreams. Maybe that’s one of the most important things. But I’ll tell you what: there was one thing that I didn’t learn from them, and that was teaching. I’m notoriously bad at teaching, especially people who don’t want to be taught. So I had some takeaways while some others, things and perks, didn’t pass on. [00:04:18] Things sometimes didn’t stick. I think all of us have some of those good and bad characteristics, thankfully, that maybe we didn’t carry over from our childhood. So “supportive”—it seems that was a central theme with your parents. We’re going to get into the details in a minute, but you’ve had a background of entrepreneurship. With respect to your father: Was he a principal? Did he start the school? [00:04:55] He was a principal. He was leading the school in the very last years of his career. [00:05:02] Interesting. Then what brought you out of Greece? [00:05:08] I only recently flew out for the first time to follow my dreams and my career. And that was Pollfish. I flew out of the Greece the second year that Pollfish was founded. Until then,

I recently came across a company called Pollfish and they captured my attention with their intro which went something like: Don't you want to know what your competitor's customers really think? How can a 'David'-sized app acquire users in a landscape dominated by a handful of 'Goliath' companies? Answer: Go undercover—now there is a tool that can ask a competitor’s users exactly what they're thinking so apps can optimize their offering accordingly and slingshot around the competition. The app is using groundbreaking 'behind enemy lines' technology that helps app publishers take down even the most established competitors from the inside. With Pollfish’s proprietary polling technology via third-party mobile apps, they claim that startups can conduct fast, flexible, economical market research they need to compete with—and even win against—big brands. App publishers can deliver a customized survey straight to the users of the app of their choosing. Examples could include ridesharing apps targeting Uber users, personal finance apps surveying Mint users, or new social networks questioning Snapchat users.
