This is the second episode about the Peacock docuseries “Bronx Zoo '90.” The documentary is the story of the 1990 New York Yankees, a last-place team in a most tumultuous year. One of the series' executive producers Brian Hunt is the President of Believe Studios. He joins the podcast to discuss how the original 8-part series written by Joel Sherman for the New York Post was picked up by the streaming service Peacock and turned into the docuseries. In 1990, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was banned for life (he would be reinstated years later). Mel Hall brought cougars into the Yankee clubhouse and dated a teenager (He's currently serving a 45-year prison sentence after being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault against minors.). Andy Hawkins threw a no-hitter but lost the game. The team was rock bottom, but that team is considered the starting point of rebuilding the Yankees into the dynasty that won three championships in four seasons in the late 90s. Hunt is President of Believe Studios, and Head of Development at Believe Entertainment Group, an Academy Award and Emmy Award-winning, New York City-based entertainment company. Hunt leads the company's studio division, developing and producing high-profile content for Digital (video + podcasts), TV, and Film. In this episode, Hunt explains how he and his team figured out that the 1990 Yankees were a story worth telling. He also went to the high school where Mel Hall dated that 15-year-old girl and she took him to the prom. This episode is sponsored by/brought to you by BetterHelp. Grab your popcorn, Milk Duds, and RC Cola (that'll be $42.75, please), and join us in the back of theatre. We promise not to put the moves on you...we're here to watch the movie. Let's take it slow and see where this goes. Oh, sorry, got lost in the moment. This week, we discuss some of our favorite music documentaries, and celebrate one of the latest additions to the canon of great "rock docs"- Louder Than You Think: A Lo-Fi History of Gary Young & Pavement. Joining us for this discussion of Citizen Kane-esque proportions is Louder Than You Think's Director, Jed. I Rosenberg and Co-Producer Brian Thalken. Louder Than You Think, a 2023 SXSW Audience Award winner, is an up-close cinematic walkabout through the life of Gary Young (May 3, 1953 - August 17, 2023), the original (and highly unlikely) drummer of indie rock royalty Pavement. His booze and drugs-fueled antics (on-stage handstands, gifting vegetables to fans) and haphazard production methods (accidentally helping launch the lo-fi aesthetic) were both a driving force of the band's early rise and the cause of his eventual crash landing. Leaving a wake of joy and/or destruction at every turn, Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction. With its inventive use of marionette sequences and featuring revelatory archival footage, Louder Than You Think is equal parts hilarious, heartbreaking and human. Learn more about your ad choices. Adult language Well, here we are. You might have known it was coming, but we didn't want to admit it. But it's time to start wrapping up this Art of the Float podcast thing... or at least slow it waaaaay down. It's been an incredible journey! For this episode, you might want to pop some popcorn, grab a beverage of choice, and join the crew for some twists and turns down memory lane - with a glimpse into the future too. We'll catch you up on some big news since our previous episode aired, like the fact that Drew is out and he's living the post-float life already. He shares some tips for selling and a few things that he would have done differently after reflecting on the process from the other side. You'll hear about Gloria's new baby - the Great Lakes Sports Hub, and why it was her last. Kim unravels some of the tangle of health issues she's been facing, and why she feels torn between her bubble and "the big bubble". You'll even hear from Producer Brian, as he pops in and shares the story of that fateful day his toe shoes led him to the Float Shoppe and started the sweetest Bromance and business partnership ever. And because we wanted the whole family to help put a bow on this adventure, two of our original co-hosts, Lance and Amy join the conversation too! You'll hear why Amy decided to let her second center go and how she has rebounded and found happiness in one of her first loves. Lance is also out of the float industry, though it followed him for many years after he left. (Tip: If you're thinking about selling your center, you're going to want to hear this!) You'll hear stories of burnout and recovery, mental health hardships and triumphs, and how hard it can be to let go of the identity of being a float center owner. And while it might seem like a lot of folks are exiting the industry, you'll hear from the crew about reflections on where we've been, and hope for where the float industry is going. It's not a sad story, but it's one that - like this podcast - is evolving. From the bottoms of all our salty hearts, we thank you for listening for all of these years. It's been utterly fulfilling and healing and inspiring to share our stories with you in each episode. We've often said that we forget that anyone even listens to us, but we're thankful that you've allowed us to share our lives and all that we've learned along the way. Welcome back to Intellicast! Brian Lamar and Producer Brian have a bit of a different episode today – they are continuing the AI discussion from a couple of weeks ago but with a market research news twist. Jumping right in, they guys congratulate EMI's Angelica Jump on being named to the Significant Insights Global 30 Under 30 list for 2023. You can check out the full list here: https://www.significantinsightsmedia.com/30-under-30/2023/ Before they jump into the AI/market research news discussion, the guys discuss the drama going on at OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT. Brian gives a quick recap of the situation that went down. The guys then give their opinions of it and what it means. The OpenAI conversation leads to Brian Lamar talking about Insights Takeover week at EMI and everything he and his team have planned. (Much of what Producer Brian was hearing about for the first time) Next, the guys jump into some AI news from around the market research industry, starting by talking about findings from a recent study from Ofcom around generative AI usage among kids and teens. The study found that four out of five teens ages 13-17 use generative AI tools, which wasn't even the most eye-popping insight. The discussion around this story led to a couple of rabbit holes. Brian and Brian then talked about Unilever's new AI Research lab in Toronto, SightX's new Generative AI consultant solution, Stagwell's partnering with Google to create AI solutions, and CivicScience's new AI tool, Sage. In the last segment of today's episode, the guys look at AI from a legislative perspective. First, they break down the comments made by the UK's Minister for AI and Intellectual Property recently at Parliament about how regulation was needed for AI. Next, the guys talk about all the different new laws that have been proposed in the US that deal with AI in some way. Finally, the guys discuss MRS's newly published report, The BEST Framework for Generative AI: How and When to Build AI into your Research Processes. They also touch on the ethical guidelines that were included in the report. You can download it here: https://www.mrs.org.uk/campaign/id/genai Thanks for listening! Next, the guys discuss some of the executive changes at Toluna in the wake of its acquisition of MetrixLab earlier this year. The changes included MetrixLab's former global HR director, Hans Verhulst, being named Chief People Officer and Jolique Weelink being named the Chief Insights Officer. Brian and Brian then discussed GMO's new API connection method, Organic Sampling. Producer Brian asks if this is just River Sampling 2.0, which Brian Lamar thinks could be. Although he feels it improves connecting studies to the right respondents, it doesn't matter. In the last story of today's episode, Brian and Brian discuss the rebranding of Kantar Public to Verian. There is nothing more powerful than a story well told. Woven into the very fabric of what makes us human, story fuels connection. It fosters empathy. And it holds the power to impact not just the individual but humanity at large. Few understand this better than Brian Grazer—a man devoted to the idea that when curiosity and conversation combine, great art is made. One of Hollywood's most prolific film producers, Brian and his Imagine Entertainment partner Ron Howard are responsible for a litany of critically acclaimed, box-office hit films and television shows including Apollo 13, 8 Mile, Splash, Arrested Development, The Beatles: Eight Days a Week, and many more. His productions have been honored with numerous awards including an astounding 10 Oscar wins, 50 Emmys, and 11 Golden Globes. Today we explore Brian's unique approach to storytelling, why he believes questions are more important than answers, and why curiosity has been the “superpower” that fueled his rise as one of Hollywood's leading producers and visionaries. Curiosity is so central to Brian's success in fact that he wrote a book about it entitled, A Curious Mind, which he has recently expanded upon in a newly released version. It was a thrill to sit down with a man that I deeply respect and admire. This conversation left me with a newfound appreciation of curiosity not only as an art form, but as a powerful driver of human happiness. Authenticity is exceedingly rare. Yet Brian Grazer embodies it with an unparalleled zest and refreshing innocence. Though Grazer might not be a household name, his tv shows and movies (like "A Beautiful Mind" and “Apollo 13”) have earned him 242 Emmy nominations and 47 Oscar nominations. He believes in the power of asking endless amounts of questions to shape stories that resonate on a deeply human level. Grazer is an unparalleled storyteller and offers a unique perspective on how to engage, question, and understand the world around us. This is…A Bit of Optimism. Welcome back to Intellicast! Today's episode is a bit different than normal. Brian Lamar and Producer Brian kick off the episode by jumping into some market research news, but all stories are tied to the theme of today's epsiode: AI. First up, the guys discuss the news of SurveyMonkey's new AI tool called Build with AI. They talk about how this can help non-researchers write better questionnaires, along with some speculating about what they hope to see in the tool in the near future. It leads to Brian Lamar touching on a recent WIRe event in Cincinnati where AI was discussed. Next, the guys touch on Voxpopme's new AI tool called Live Interviews. It leads to a conversation about how quickly qualitative firms have embraced technology since COVID. In the final news story, Brian and Brian discuss the recent findings from a Qualtrics study on market researchers' impressions and feelings of AI in market research. There were some surprising results, but the guys found it helpful that while people were optimistic, they did recognize the potential hazards. In the next segment, they guys dig into how AI is being used throughout the industry, along with a variety of examples. They also talk about how EMI is using it internally, for both market research and just to increase efficiency. They guys talk about how they are personally using it along with some of the experiments they have been doing. Brian talks about how while he was testing image creation, he found a glitch where AI was misspelling words in the images, even after being told not to misspell it and being given the correct spelling. Brian Lamar also gives an example of one of the other applications that his team is using AI for. Thanks for listening! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian dig into some of the recent news from around the market research industry. The episode kicks off with some commentary about how fall has really set in over the last week or so. Then Brian Lamar starts to provide some updates on upcoming conference dates. He talks about not only the ones left on the schedule for 2023 but many that have been announced for 2024 as well. Brian then gets into the upcoming Cincinnati WIRe event where EMI's own Mary Draper will be speaking on a panel with Mike Herrel and Rudy Bublitz about artificial intelligence, diversity, and more at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati. After the conference discussion, the guys jump into some market research news. First up is the news of the new Delete Act in California that strengthens CCPA regulations. The guys wonder how this will impact companies and people who are based outside California but work with businesses/people who are. In the next story is a big one for those of us in the sample industry. Research Defender was acquired by Rep Data. Brian and Brian discuss the acquisition, and how it will enhance the competitive landscape around data quality. We also want to send our congratulations again to friends of the podcast Vignesh and the entire Research Defender team. In the next story, the guys discuss another data quality-related story, this time the new initiative, Colab, from Verve and Basis research. It takes a different approach to data quality that the guys hadn't seen before. Brian is encouraged and hopes it is successful. Producer Brian plays devil's advocate and asks how they could account for someone using the new voice chat function of ChatGPT to game their validation methods. The guys switched back to data privacy news with a story about the new federal legislation being proposed called You Own the Data Act. The proposed legislation would prohibit a lot of data collection, use, and storage by a number of insights companies and organizations, as well as requiring several common consumer data privacy rights. The guys talk about Howard's response to the legislation, as well as give their own perspective on it. In the last couple of news stories, the guys touch on the winners of the MRX Podcast of the Year award, as well as the winners of the Female Founders Award. In the last segment of the podcast, they guys discuss a recent Greenbook article titled, Why the Sampling Ecosystem Sets Up Honest Participants for Failure, from Karine Pepin of 2CV. The article talks about how EPC is a cause of fraud in the industry, and for honest participants to fail when taking surveys. Welcome back to Intellicast! We have another great guest joining us on today's episode. Craig Alter, who works in consumer insights at Perfetti Van Melle, joins Brian Lamar and Producer Brian to talk about how research has evolved from a brand perspective this year. Before diving into the discussion, Craig brings us up to speed on what has happened with him since his last appearance on the podcast back in 2022. He explains how he joined Perfetti Van Melle and the reasons behind his career move. Next, Craig shares his perspective on how research has adapted this year, considering the volatile economy and tightening budgets. He mentions that the impact on Perfetti Van Melle has been minimal, and we even speculate that candy might be recession-proof. Craig also highlights Perfetti Van Melle's growth mode, citing their recent acquisitions of new brands from Mondelez earlier that week. The conversation then evolves into a discussion about how Craig and his team gather and utilize global insights, applying them to regional brands. They also explore the overlap between regional brands and tastes in different areas. In the final segment of the interview, Craig discusses how he and the team at Perfetti Van Melle are incorporating artificial intelligence into their research process. He explains their plans to use AI to test video ads by analyzing a database of previous ads to determine their potential success. It was enlightening to gain a different perspective! Welcome back to Intellicast! On today's episode, we are joined by Jeremy Zogby, the managing partner of John Zogby Strategies to talk about the current state of America, polling, and we even get a sneak peek into some results from their own proprietary research. Hang in there too, it is a long one, but an awesome one. Kicking off the episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian get Jeremy's take on the current state of America and what historical analogies may exist for our current times. Jeremy talks about how 10 to 15 years ago we saw the simultaneous rise of the Tea Party and Occupy Wall Street; two movements that could be considered on the far ends of each political spectrum. One led to the rise of Bernie Sanders and the other MAGA and Trump. He discussed how we almost saw a face-off between the two populus factions of the parties. In the end, he shows how populism is here to stay. We pivot a bit in the next segment and talk to Jeremy about what he is seeing right now in polling in terms of the presidential nomination on both sides. Jeremy starts out by letting everyone know that polling is not predicting anything at this point. The predictions really come in the last week of a presidential campaign after there have been months of monitoring the landscape and data collection; that is when they will make a prediction. Right now, it is way too early to predict anything. Instead of giving any predictions, Jeremy talks about how right now it is much more establishment versus anti-establishment on both sides, with anti-establishment leading in many cases. Jeremy then gives us some insights into the types of polling work he is doing right now. It includes the standard race studies, as well as work for some candidates, and some public opinion studies on some issues he feels will be factors in the 2024 election. Jeremy then gets into the different tiers of issues. Tier one is the economy/inflation, and tier 2 issues right now are guns, crime, and the southern border. This leads to Jeremy talking about the intensity factor of issues and how it can impact voting. In the next segment, Jeremy gives the guys a preview into what the next 6 months look like at John Zogby Strategies in terms of polling and other projects. Jeremy talks about how they will be tracking the entire national election as they work for the Kennedy campaign. The last discussion leads Jeremy to talk about some proprietary research findings he has collected, that at the time of the recording, had not been released yet. We talk about everything from trust in media, AI in news, and people's view of local institutions. The key takeaway Jeremy found was that there is a high level of distrust right now with the media. In the final segment, Jeremy tries to reinstall the guy's faith with some additional findings that show people trust local government institutions, like school boards. He also leaves the guys with some inspiration about our generation fixing the problems for our kids' generation. Thanks for tuning in! Thanks for tuning in to Intellicast! In this episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian discuss conferences and some news stories from the past few weeks (yes, we know it's been a while since our last episode!) So, without further ado, let's jump right in. The episode kicks off with some feedback we received on our last episode! In it, we had a conversation on the conference in Hilton Head, which was a unique location, but it was expensive, hard to get to, etc. Our listener recommended that maybe we need to go to some second-tier cities (Ex: Charlotte, New Orleans, Nashville, Philadelphia, Cincinnati) for our conferences. The reasoning being that these cities are cheaper, and the airports have less travel hassle/cancellations and are easier to navigate. What do you think? The guys also give an update on the upcoming conferences in the next few months and even some in 2024! In our first news story, the guys discuss Momentive's announcement that they will be returning to its original name, SurveyMonkey. As expected, Brian Lamar is practically giddy over this news. In the next news story, Brian and Brian chat about Cint and Publisher's Clearing House's partnership to increase access to respondents with their new platform, PCH Consumer Insights. This leads Brian Lamar to a bit of a soapbox rant about how things like this change panels. The next news story follows a similar thread with Kantar selling its specialist healthcare business to M3 Global Research. After this, the discussion turns to artificial intelligence. The European Union has approved a draft version of the EU's AI Act which sets out plans to regulate the use of AI technology. The plans will enact bans on many uses of AI and require AI systems to comply with transparency requirements. In the last story, the guys discuss QuetionPro's acquisition of PathosAI, an AI platform that identifies states and non-stated emotions, which leads to another fired-up rant from Brian Lamar about name changes.
