A round table discussion between community organizers and artists who are involved in prisoner justice work in both the Chicago and Montreal areas. Olivia Dumas who works with formally incarcerated folks in the Montreal area doing physiological and social support, Aaron Hughes and Damon Locks who both do arts based community projects with prisoners in Illinois and Sheena Hoszko who has been involved in Prisoners' Justice Day and does artwork related to the realities of prisons today in Canada. Aaron Hughes makes his second appearance on the Ecomcrew Podcast to talk about all things Tiktok Shop, and why people should start leveraging the platform for their ecommerce businesses. Today's episode is sponsored by Clearco, a company that provides ecommerce businesses with working capital to fund inventory, marketing, shipping and logistics, and more! Check them out today! During my last eCommerceFuel Live Trip, the one common topic that frequently came up was about was how good Tiktok Shop was for their businesses. Unfortunately, ice packs don't really have a passionate audience, so I brought in someone who's products have had a significant uplift from TikTok Shop alone. That's why I've invited Aaron Hughes on the podcast today! Aaron Hughes is no stranger on the podcast but he's back to talk about how Tiktok Shop has performed for his business, the impacts the platform has had on his business, and a few tips for people who haven't bit the bullet yet. Patriotism can never express a common human aspiration nor a universal moral code—if everyone on earth claimed to be a fierce and focused patriot today, 20 % of the world's people would be Chinese patriots, and only 4.4 % patriotic Americans. Patriotism promises a steady anchor, but it is, in reality, entirely unstable. We note that every human being is indigenous to planet Earth, and that there is, therefore, no such thing as a foreigner. We might work, then, to replace national patriotism with human solidarity—sin fronteras—in the spirit of Chicago's poet laureate Gwendolyn Brooks: “We are each other's harvest: / we are each other's / business: / we are each other's / magnitude and bond.”We're excited to be joined in discussion with two influential Chicago artist/activists Aaron Hughes and Amber Ginsburg, authors and co-editors of two extraordinary books, Remaking the Exceptional which highlights the connections between policing in Chicago and human rights violations abroad, and Invitation to Tea which compiles 48 tea recipes, stories, and traditions, one for each of the countries that have had citizens held at the US military prison in Guantánamo. Amber and Aaron will be at our home base, Pilsen Community Books, at 7:00 pm on June 26, which is International Day in Support of Torture Survivors, and we hope you'll come out that night and build community with us.

An Anxious Inheritance reveals the tensions between the early framers of Islam and the ever-expandable category of non-Muslims. Examining the encounter with these religious others, and showing how the Qur'an functioned as both a script to understand them and a map to classify them, this study traces the key role that these religious others played in what would ultimately emerge as (Sunni) orthodoxy. This orthodoxy would appear to be the natural outgrowth of the Prophet Muhammad's preaching, but it ultimately amounted to little more than a retroactive projection of later ideas onto the earliest period.Non-Muslims (among them Christians, Jews, Zoroastrians) and the "wrong" kinds of Muslims (e.g., the Shi'a) became integral—by virtue of their perceived stubbornness, infidelity, heresy, or the like—to the understanding of what true religion was not and, just as importantly, what it should be. These non-Muslims were rarely real individuals or groups; rather, they functioned as textual foils that could be conveniently orchestrated, and ultimately controlled, to facilitate Muslim self-definition. Without such religious others proper belief could, quite literally, not be articulated. Shedding new light on the early history of Islam, while also problematizing the binary of orthodoxy/heresy in the study of religion, An Anxious Inheritance makes significant contributions to a number of diverse academic fields.

On the January, 2023 edition of Stefan Christoff's monthly artist interview on Radio AlHara we hear from the creators of "Remaking the Exceptional: Tea, Torture, and Reparations," (www.tea-project.org) a collective work that is described this way: "Through the voices of torture survivors and activists, the Remaking the Exceptional podcast highlights connections between policing and incarceration in Chicago and the human rights violations of the Global War on Terror, while also celebrating the struggle for justice and reparations. Sitting, sipping, and reflecting over a cup of tea with others can create the space for conversations on difficult and at times painful subjects. It also can create opportunities to envision a new set of social relations." The interview is with Amber Ginsburg, Nate Sandberg, and Aaron Hughes. Music on this edition at the end is by Karim Wasfi with the track "Requiem aeternam, Cello Prelude." Each month Stefan contributes an interview to @radioalhara in Palestine. Jacob Neusner (born 1932) is one of the most important figures in the shaping of modern American Judaism. He was pivotal in transforming the study of Judaism from an insular project only conducted by--and of interest to--religious adherents to one which now flourishes in the secular setting of the university. He is also one of the most colorful, creative, and difficult figures in the American academy. But even those who disagree with Neusner's academic approach to ancient rabbinic texts have to engage with his pioneering methods. In Jacob Neusner: An American Jewish Iconoclast (NYU Press, 2016), Aaron Hughes shows Neusner to be much more than a scholar of rabbinics. He is a social commentator, a post-Holocaust theologian, and was an outspoken political figure during the height of the cultural wars of the 1980s. Neusner's life reflects the story of what happened as Jews migrated to the suburbs in the late 1940s, daring to imagine new lives for themselves as they successfully integrated into the fabric of American society. It is also the story of how American Jews tried to make sense of the world in the aftermath of the extermination of European Jewry and the subsequent creation of the State of Israel in 1948, and how they sought to define what it meant to be an American Jew. Unlike other great American Jewish thinkers, Neusner was born in the U.S., and his Judaism was informed by an American ethos. His Judaism is open, informed by and informing the world. It is an American Judaism, one that has enabled American Jews--the freest in history--to be fully American and fully Jewish. Learn more about your ad choices. On Thursday, August 13, 2020, NSI hosted Tackling the Techlash. In recent years, U.S. technology companies have been facing an increasingly hostile public reaction here in the U.S. and abroad. These concerns, expressed most prominently in the United States by political leaders at the state and federal level and in Europe by national and EU legislators are based on perceived threats to privacy created by these companies, their role in creating a new economic reality that may displace jobs, and other significant concerns. As a result, some of America’s most innovative companies are party to a mounting number of lawsuits and claims of antitrust abuses. At the same time, the U.S. government’s relationship with these technology giants remains fraught in the aftermath of the Snowden revelations a half-decade ago and the companies’ alignment with particular advocacy groups. Despite these trends, Americans are engaging with these companies more than ever. In turn, these tech companies continue to grow, innovate, and drive the U.S. economy which fuels American national security. Our panel of experts addressed how the U.S. government can address legitimate public concerns without impairing US innovation, economic growth, and national security. Our panel featured:Aaron Hughes, NSI Advisory Board member and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber PolicyRandal Milch, former General Counsel of Verizon and Co-Chair of the NYU Center for CybersecuritySamantha Ravich, Commissioner on the Cyberspace Solarium Commission and former Deputy National Security Advisor for Vice President Cheney and was moderated by:Ron Gula, NSI Advisory Board Member and President of Gula Tech Adventures See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Aaron Hughes has spent decades architecting, building and managing various components that make up the internet we all use today. Ever heard of PeeringDB.com? Yeah, that was one of his many "side projects" that was put together in a matter of days because it simply needed to be done and he saw no one else doing it. Since I met the man, he has been a role model of productivity, successfully juggling multiple roles and wearing multiple hats at the same time. His Linkedin Profile says it all to this extent. Thankfully for me, we both worked together when I first started in the industry and we also happened to live just a few minutes down the road from one another in Santa Cruz, CA. Aaron quickly became one of my favorite people to sit back and talk shop with because I always walked away learning something new and, at some point, laughing until I cried. I am blessed to have had so many opportunities to learn, laugh and cry with Aaron and his equally bright and fun loving wife Stacy. I hope you enjoy listening in on our wide ranging conversation. I'll give you a teaser with 2 of my favorite quotes that came out of it; "Yes, there is hope, but this hope is predicated on education." '"Embrace Automation" is the new "Work with your brain and not with your back"' Enjoy!

There are few names more sacred in the 21st-Century Fulham pantheon than that of Brede Hangeland, who made 270 caps for the Whites and formed one half of the partnership fondly remembered as the 'Thames Barrier'. It was an absolute pleasure, therefore, to welcome the great man as the first ever 'Big Interview' on Fulhamish. We spent 45 minutes talking to Brede, covering everything from the Great Escape, through the European years and through the dark days of Martin Jol and Felix Magath; with anecdotes about Aaron Hughes, Dimitar Berbatov and Jimmy Bullard sprinkled through for good measure. There's plenty of chat about the stewardship of Roy Hodgson, who Hangeland felt a special connection with; about the other ways in which managers related to him; we touch on the ecstasy and the agony he felt in his spell with Fulham; and finally get to the bottom of the Felix Magath debacle. There's time to grab Brede's all-time Fulham XI and his thoughts on former international teammate and current midfield dynamo Stefan Johansen at the end.Whilst we have your attention for a minute, make sure that you're subscribed to our new YouTube channel, which we brightened up this weekend with our awayday experience at Barnsley. Many academics, especially in the aftermath of September 11th, have had to become a public authority on Islam. This is largely due to the ongoing negative portrayal of Muslims in the media and the numerous misconceptions individuals derive from these portraits. Others have noted some of the consequences of this new call many Islamicists choose to answer but in this new volume, Theorizing Islam: Disciplinary Deconstruction and Reconstruction (Equinox, 2012), the types of scholarship scholars of Islam produce are put under the microscope. In this book, Aaron Hughes, professor in the Department of Religion and Classics at the University of Rochester, does not reflect on how Muslims understand the boundaries of their tradition but offers a study of the study of Islam. Overall, Hughes contends that scholars of Islam working in Religious Studies Departments generally reproduce apologetic portraits of Islam that do not effectively demonstrate the spectrum of Muslim perspectives. For Hughes, the result is that the complicated relationship between Islamic and Religious Studies is never resolved and Islamicist continue to remain relegated to their own quarter of the field and avoid contributing to larger ongoing discourses. The provocation introduced in Theorizing Islam is a call for a more sophisticated approach to the academic study of Islam, which accounts for critical theory and methodology. In our conversation we discuss contemporary presentations of Muhammad’s life, how research is affected when stepping into the public discourse about Islam, the rhetorical dichotomy of culture and religion, orientalism, historicity versus redaction, institutional and academic affiliation, and when the academic study of religion work best.
