Daily life in Anglo-Saxon England, spanning from the 5th to the 11th centuries, was predominantly rural and centred around agriculture. Most people lived in small villages, often comprising fewer than 100 inhabitants, and worked the land to sustain their communities.Homes were modest wooden structures with thatched roofs, typically consisting of a single room where families cooked, ate, and slept together. These dwellings were part of self-sufficient villages that relied on farming and local resources for survival .Society was structured into distinct classes: at the top were the thanes, the Saxon upper class who enjoyed hunting and feasting; below them were the churls, free peasants who worked their own land; and at the bottom were the thralls, slaves who performed laborious tasks .The majority of Anglo-Saxons were farmers, cultivating crops like wheat and barley, and raising livestock. Some were skilled craftsmen, producing tools, jewelry, and textiles. Women played vital roles in the household and economy, engaging in activities such as weaving, baking, and dairy production .Life was challenging, with hard work and limited comforts, but communities were tight-knit, and traditions were strong. The Anglo-Saxons laid the foundations for many aspects of English culture and society that would follow in the centuries to come.Warfare was a significant aspect of Anglo-Saxon life. Most able-bodied freemen were expected to serve in the fyrd, a local militia mobilised during times of conflict. These part-time soldiers provided their own weapons and supplies, balancing military duties with their agricultural responsibilities .On the battlefield, the Anglo-Saxons employed the formidable shield wall tactic, where warriors stood shoulder to shoulder, interlocking their shields to form a solid defensive line. This formation was central to their combat strategy, as seen in battles like Maldon and Hastings .Weapons commonly used included spears, swords, axes, and seaxes (single-edged knives). While bows and arrows were less prevalent, they were occasionally used. Defensive gear comprised shields, helmets, and mail shirts, though such armor was typically reserved for wealthier warriors due to its cost In response to persistent Viking invasions, King Alfred the Great restructured the military by establishing a network of fortified towns known as burhs. These strongholds served both as defensive positions and administrative centres, enhancing the kingdom's ability to repel attacks and maintain order Thus, warfare was deeply intertwined with daily life in Anglo-Saxon England, influencing social structures, settlement patterns, and the evolution of military strategies.

Prior to delving into holiday glimmers, Dave provides a Walter update and Peter anticipates the arrival of his new rescue dog, Kobe, inbound from Georgia. One of Peter's glimmers involved a family horse-drawn sleigh ride experience for Patty's birthday, two days after Christmas. Peter laments a catastrophic moment of stupidity with a home project that cost him dearly. Foodie talk prevails with Dave's first pizza foray with his new Ooni oven while Peter waxes poetic about his marinated tenderloin for Christmas and his better-late-than-never discovery of the virtues of finishing salt, as a result of a gift of a tub of Maldon salt. Paul MacCormack's upcoming Mindful Super Leadership Master Class comes up for discussion, as does a tribute to the late Jim Husting, CGCS, who passed away just before Christmas.

In the latest episode of Double Jeopardy, Ken Macdonald and Tim Owen are joined by Lord Burnett of Maldon, the former Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, to talk about punishment and the British addiction to prison. As one of five co-authors of a significant report on the subject (published by the Howard League in September) Lord Burnett shares his insights on the need for change in our approach to sentencing, the challenges within our overcrowded prisons, and the societal implications of the current punitive system. Together, the trio explore key questions such as why prison sentences have doubled in length over the past 50 years, whether longer sentences truly reduce crime, and the impact of political decision-making on our justice system. Ken and Tim also turn their attention to the damning allegations surrounding the late Mohamed Al-Fayed and the wider implications this case holds for the criminal justice system. This major scandal is just beginning.

Written by: Saint Sophrony of Essex, England Translated from the Russian by: Rosemary Edmonds Originally published in 1991 by the Patriarchal Stavropegic Monastery of St. John the Baptist, Tolleshunt Knights by Maldon, Essex "Man does not always find it easy with God. In the generally much prolonged periods when grace abandons the soul, God may appear a merciless tyrant. When all his efforts - often pushed to extreme limits - fail to obtain Divine mercy, man suffers acutely that were it possible, he would renounce existence in any form. What, then is the nature of suffering? Not an easy question to answer." (p. 193) "The soul from love of the Lord has lost her wits. She sits it silence, with no wish to speak, and looks upon the world with mazed eyes, having no desire for it and seeing it not. And people do not know that she is contemplating her beloved Lord, that the world has been left behind and is forgotton, for there is no sweetness therein." Having too much or too little salt can make or break a dish, and as chefs know all too well, even the variety of salt used can dramatically impact flavors. Salt is a seasoning that we consume every day and is necessary for life, but how much do we know about its contemporary production? Although typically associated with warmer climates, Dingle Sea Salt co-founders Tom Leach & Moe McKeown have created a small batch Irish sea salt that not only rivals their Mediterranean competition, but is made in the most environmentally sound way possible. For our first episode of 2024, we speak with Tom & Moe about their love of surfing and its relationship to salt production; how it's possible to use solar evaporation to make salt in an Irish climate; and why it's important to grow their business thoughtfully, with intention and care for the natural world.Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. #168 Big Cookie, Big Ideas - Andrea Ludlow, Showstopper Cookies

Meaningful Marketplace Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 13, 2023 43:14

It was almost exactly 100 episodes ago we first interviewed Andrea Ludlow, founder of Showstopper Cookies; episode 69 released March of 2021 to be precise. She had started her business about six months prior to the show. Cookie companies are everywhere and they come and go like streetcars. So how has Andrea's company endured and what makes her cookies legitimate showstoppers? Answer: Focus. Andrea makes only one, very large, special, salty chocolate chip cookie and sticks with her winning recipe. Every showstopper cookie is lovingly handmade and baked under supervision in their southeast Portland, Oregon location. They use only the best, tastiest ingredients including locally sourced flour and eggs and chocolate from the Guittard Chocolate Company. They source carefully from the Camas Country Mill for flour, the Cairnsprings Mill also for flour. They use only organic white and brown sugars, Maldon salt, unsalted butter. They buy local free range eggs, and to top it off, they use only Andrea's homemade vanilla extract. Showstopper cookies aren't made for dunking in milk while enjoying a TV show. They are for gifts and special occasions. When you visit their website you'll see why, but their description paints the picture: “Showstopper cookies are dancing and singing their way into mouths across the country…a magical way to treat yourself…” Since launching Showstopper Cookies at our first interview with her, what has happened to Andrea and her company since then? For one thing, when asked how many cookies she's sold since our last interview, Andrea has no idea! And Andrea gives a big thanks to our show hosts Sarah Masoni and Sarah Marshall, who urged her to learn to freeze her cookie dough to increase the production and shipping components of her business. Special occasion businesses have seasons of course and Showstopper is no exception. From May to October, Andrea attends one or more farmers markets which results in 600 or more cookie sales a week. Then it's a lull until the Holiday season, then another lull from January until spring. The “lulls” aren't completely bad either at this stage of Andrea's business, because it gives her time to catch her breath, look ahead and also think of ways to eliminate the lulls. For example, a customer asked about ordering one giant cookie as a birthday cake. After some Instagram posts, Andrea saw she had a winner and has added that to the website recently. Birthdays are a “lull-resistant” product. Andrea is grateful for the advice she received from Meaningful Marketplace, and would like to pass on advice to other foodpreneurs now that she has had more time in the pilot's seat. For one thing, ASK. Ask questions of everyone you meet everywhere. Whether it's the vendor in the stall next to you at the farmers market or the distributor searching for new products. “Be friendly with error” is one of her quotes (I love the way she puts it, ed.) meaning get up every time you fall. Do favors for others and ask for favors, too. And because of COVID and the aftermath, Andrea also has made some big moves. She has spent some advertising money on a popular podcast show (Ask Ronna) and she has started going after corporate accounts, both new moves since our first interview. You can purchase Showstopper Cookies at local Portland area farmers markets and on online at: https://www.showstoppercookies.com/. TODAY'S MAIN TOPIC: Over the past few years, there has been a remarkable resurgence in the popularity of animal fats like butter, tallow, and lard. Once considered dietary villains, these traditional fats are now being embraced by a growing number of people seeking natural, whole-food options. This shift in perception is owed to the realization that animal fats are not only delicious but also highly nutritious. Butter, with its rich and creamy texture, is not only a staple in the kitchen for baking and cooking but is also recognized for its health benefits, providing essential vitamins and healthy fatty acids. Similarly, tallow and lard, which were previously dismissed as unhealthy, have gained popularity due to their unique flavor and remarkable versatility in culinary applications. As people become more informed about the benefits of incorporating these animal fats into their diets, they are rediscovering the flavorful wonders of traditional cooking methods and embracing these time-honored ingredients. For instance, animal fats contain fat-soluble vitamins such as vitamins A, D, E, and K, which are necessary for various bodily functions. Additionally, these fats are rich in minerals like selenium and zinc, which are crucial for maintaining a healthy immune system and proper cellular function. Incorporating moderate amounts of quality animal fats into a balanced diet can provide a diverse array of nutrients that contribute to overall nutrition and well-being. Some ways I use animal fats: In my skillets to saute items like duckfat potatoes, buttered grilled cheese, and enriching items beef tallow like mashed potatoes. I use butter, lots of it, in sandwiches for moisture, flavor and glue. I use duckfat to cook eggs, sometimes bacon fat if I ma having bacon with the meal, not so much anymore. Beef tallow is perfect to saute vegetables for a soup, particularly a beef nad barley soup. Uses For Animal Fats Using animal fats in cooking can add a delicious and rich flavor to a variety of dishes. Whether it's duck fat, bacon fat, or beef tallow, these fats bring a depth of flavor that is hard to replicate with other ingredients. Animal fats also have a high smoke point, making them ideal for high-temperature cooking methods like frying or searing. Beyond enhancing the taste, these fats can also improve the texture of your dishes by creating a crispy crust or tenderizing meats. While animal fats should be used in moderation due to their high saturated fat content, incorporating them thoughtfully can elevate your culinary creations to new heights of flavor and satisfaction.   HOMESTEAD TSUNAMI: Documentary, No Farmers NO Food, hosted by Roman Balmakov of Epoch Times this production looks at the aqeeze farmers are feeling all over the world, but here in the USA too. CVS pharmacy announces closure of 900 stores nationwide due to shoplifting and violence. I want to reiterate to anyone listening to this and operating their personal or business finances as if everything is peachy keen that nothing is further from the truth. The entire globe is so close to a catastrophe that will plunge us into some really dark times. The evidence is everywhere if you look, for example the bond market, auto sector, banking sector, credit cards, real estate-Air BnB etc. PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION: Maldon Sea Salt is a really interesting and tasty product from the UK. Maldon is a finishing salt, so you apply to food before serving, the crush, salinity, and taste are pretty amazing. Go ahead and grab the ingredients below before starting the episode. Roasted Carrots with Carrot Top Pesto & BurrataServes 4 to 6For the carrot top pesto:4 cups lightly packed washed carrot tops, stems discarded and roughly chopped, a small handful reservedHandful basil leaves1/2 cup walnuts, toasted1 ounce grated Parmesan cheese1 medium garlic clove, halved lengthwise1 teaspoon Maldon or other flaky sea salt1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oilFor the carrots:20 small carrots, scrubbed and tops trimmed but stems left on2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling1 teaspoon plus a few pinches flaky salt1/2 pound burrata, drained and at room temperature3 tablespoons carrot top pesto, plus more to tasteSmall handful basil leavesHalf a lemonBread, for serving (optional)Make the pesto: Combine the carrot tops and basil in a food processor, pulse, then add the nuts, cheese, garlic, and salt. Pulse again, and then with the machine continuously running, add the oil in a thin stream. (You'll have to stop to scrape down the sides a few times.) Taste and adjust for seasoning.Make the carrots: Heat oven to 500° F with a rack in the center.Pour 2 tablespoons of the oil into an ovenproof pan large enough to hold the carrots in a single layer (or do this step in two pans). Let the oil come to barely smoking over high heat, then add the carrots and stir to coat them in the oil. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon of salt.Cook, turning occasionally, until the carrots are browning in spots—this should take 6 to 8 minutes, and the carrots won't yet be cooked through.Once they're nicely browned in spots, place the whole pan in the hot oven and roast, stirring occasionally, until carrots are tender and cooked through, about 8 to 12 minutes. Remove from oven and let cool slightly.Toss the cooked carrots very gently, as they'll be soft, with the prepared pesto, using more or less based on your taste. Transfer the coated carrots to a platter, and top with the burrata. (You may want to halve or quarter your burrata, depending on its size, but that part is up to you.)Add a few more dollops of pesto to the carrots, here and there, and sprinkle each piece of burrata with a bit of flaky salt.Dress the reserved handful of carrot top sprigs with a squeeze of lemon, a drizzle of olive oil, and a small pinch of salt, then top the carrots and burrata with the greens. Serve with toast for mopping up the cheese and bread, if you like.Lobby Time Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

The most famous Old English battle poem, The Battle of Maldon, commemorates a very different sort of conflict: a battle that took place in 991 during which the ealdorman of Essex, Byrhtnoth, allowed his ofermod (‘pride' or ‘overconfidence') to get the better of him. Byrhtnoth, the leader of his loyal veterans and local Anglo-Saxon troops, permitted a raiding Viking army to take up a position on land in preparation for battle. This resulted in both the heroic death of Byrhtnoth, and ultimately a valiant defeat for the English. Save for a few deserters, almost all of Byrthnoth's men face death by his side, delivering a series of rousing speeches. The elderly warrior Byrhtwold faces his death by saying: The mind must be the harder, the heart the keener the spirit the greater, as our strength lessens. Here lies our leader entirely cut down our good leader upon the ground; may he always mourn who thinks to turn now from this battle-play.

My guest today is Noell Jett, the creative force behind the popular Jett Set Farmhouse, which you may have seen on Instagram and TikTok. Noell shares the unbelievable story behind her beautiful 3,700-square foot custom farmhouse in Florida – built by hand and savvy influencer marketing – and the key strategies she learned while overcoming a difficult past. Since her husband Daniel is a contractor and she has a love for all things home, it is no surprise they dreamed of building their own home since they met. It took them eight years of planning and searching to get their home just right for them and their four – soon to be five – children. In her new book, In From the Ground Up: Building a Dream House---and a Beautiful Life---through Grit and Grace, Noell shares the inside story behind their farmhouse and delivers a compelling vision for people who want to discover how to overcome their pasts and achieve their own dreams. 4:37 – Noell 101 Her Jett Set Farmhouse story started four years ago, but no one saw all the hard work they put in the years before. Their life goal was to build a house and grow their social media platform. 8:37 – A sheltered childhood Noell grew up in southwest Missouri in a poverty-stricken part of the country. She grew up in what she calls a religious cult and was sheltered from the outside world. The only taste Noell had of the outside world was at her grandmother's house, where she read Better Homes and Gardens magazines. 14:13 – An intentional mother Noell is an intentional mother to her kids and her kids' friends. The friends often confide in her because she is available and supportive. 16:39 – Personal responsibility She encourages her kids to follow their values and live a life of personal responsibility. 20:58 – A new relationship with God Noell hit rock bottom after a divorce. After meeting her now husband and his family, she had a new relationship with God and felt like God still loved her. 26:05 – Noelle's life story From the Ground Up tells Noell's life story through the building of her house and the lessons she has learned. 31:24 – Patience in house building They didn't plan on framing the house themselves, but her husband wanted it done perfectly. Noell had to be patient as the process moved very slowly. 34:04 – Hopes for her book readers Noell wants her readers to know they can accomplish more than they ever dreamed. 36:56 – Get to know you Guilty pleasure? Are you ready to get a little sensual today? No, not necessarily in the bedroom- but rather sensual as in getting into all our SENSES! I absolutely loved this conversation with “Sensual Chef” Kiele-Jael Stanton on how we can better nourish ourselves, body, and soul. Kiele is a certified Health-Supportive Chef, Wellness Culinary Coach, and the founder of Kiele Jael Wellness. Her approach takes a new spin on traditional food wisdom, where she combines her love of food education, cooking, wellness, self-care, and nutrition, into one delicious experience that teaches women how to take care of themselves through nourishment! Kiele is well-versed in Ayurveda, traditional Chinese medicine, and other ancient food practices. She feels that food is meant to be experienced sensually — by connecting to ourselves through the four senses (sight, taste, touch & smell), nature (where it's grown), energetically, and seen as the ultimate self-care practice. Kiele came from a fast-paced, high-power fashion career where she was designing handbags in NYC. Her body began to tell her that she was no longer living in alignment with her purpose. When she discovered she had a severe allergic reaction to Nickel, she went on this path to better herself and find the path to physical wellness and health - but also pave her own path and create a career that supported the new lifestyle she knew she was missing. We talk about the 5 flavors to heal your body and for balance - fire, earth, wood, water, and metal - you need all of these elements to create balance in your life. Everything tastes better with a little Salt. Your mind may have drifted to some Maldon or Pink Himalayan salt that's part of your cooking routine but I'm talking about Salt, the popular Lakewood restaurant that will soon celebrate a sixth anniversary. No small feat given the last couple of years. Chef Jill Vedaa, a 3X Beard Foundation Semifinalist for Best Chef-Great Lakes Region, and Jessica Parkison, a Level 1 Somm with life-long hospitality expertise, have created a cozy, small plates corner spot that is respected by industry insiders and enjoyed by all. We talk about drowning sorrows and fears in a bottle of tequila, creating a workplace built on respect and community, and the origins of their partnership. The duo also talks with me about being women in a male-dominated industry and they way they're working to change restaurant culture for themselves and their staff.

I am dreaming of southwest Florida right now.  We have begun the big freeze in the frozen tundra, with actual temperatures in negative double digits.  Most of our adventures have moved indoors for the time being with creative projects.  Tonight my son cut up a bunch of cardboard to transform our dining room table into a ping pong table.  Kids' creativity constantly amazes me.   The highlight of my week last week was a snow day, a real no school, 8 inches of snow kind of snow day.  It was so great to have everyone home.  I am working from home for my full-time job so I didn't get to enjoy it as much as my kids did, but it truly was a bright spot.  I think we went through 12 pairs of gloves, every time they came in they were soaked.  They were skiing, and sledding.  I even took a good 3 mile snowshoe as dusk set in and it was rejuvenating.  I was so glad that in this day in age with the ability to do virtual learning the school district recognized the importance of a day of play in the snow.  It was a breath of fresh air.  With the cold weather I have also created Hygge time. Hygge is the Danish term that describes comfort and cozy qualities that embody well-being.  Lately, one of those activities has been reading by the fire with a big fluffy sherpa blanket.  I have two episodes coming up with an author of adventure stories and I wanted to share them with you now so you have time to get the books and review before the episodes launch at the end of February and early March.  If you stick with me to the end, I'll share more about the author, books and discount code for Ordinary Sherpa listeners.    If you are ready to have a relaxing experience on the beaches of Sanibel Island, then having a friend like Nick Adams would be ideal.  Nick is from London, England and has been a photographer since the early nineties. He drew a lot of inspiration from his uncle, John Adams, who was a respected fashion and glamour photographer in the 'swinging' 60's through to the 'big hair' 80's in London whose work can still be found in stock libraries in London with the popular resurgence of retro culture. Nick started his career working on cruise ships where he met Lori (from Delaware, Ohio). In 1994 Nick and Lori moved to England. With the help of The Prince's Trust (an excellent English charity started by Prince Charles to help young people who wanted to start up in business), Nick set up 'Nick Adams Photography'.  The studio was based in a rural market town called Maldon in Essex. During their stay in England, Lori and Nick got married and had their first child Max.  In 1998 Lori, Nick and Max moved to Southwest Florida where Nick Adams Photography made a reappearance, with better weather and the sandy beaches as a backdrop. They made Southwest Florida their permanent home along with two additions to their family, Brooke and McKenna.  Currently, Nick and Lori still run a thriving photography business on Sanibel Island and have also started the Sanibel Captiva Guide, a comprehensive guide of the Islands.  Resources referenced during this episode: The Prince's Trust:www.princes-trust.org.uk The Sanibel Captiva Guide Web: thesancapguide.com Email: thesancapguide@gmail.com YouTube: The Sanibel Captiva Guide by Nick Adams Photography Insta: @thesancapguide TikTok: @thesancapguide   Nick Adams Photography Web: nickadamsphotography.com email: nick@nickadamsphotography.com YouTube: The Sanibel Captiva Guide by Nick Adams Photography Insta: @nickadamsphotog Key Takeaways How and why did you land where you are living now?  Nick's story from England, back and forth to America had several influences.  The weather was one influence.   There is a thread of generosity both on the receiving end and contributing end.  Nick Adams Photography version one was the recipient of some support early on from Prince Charles Charity to give it the backing to get off the ground.  Nick Adams Photography version two contributions have supported the local community of Sanibel and Captiva Islands.  How does generosity show up in your story?  How might you contribute to helping others on their adventure journey?  The Ordinary Sherpa Facebook group is a great place to contribute and receive others generosity.   The San Cap Guide is a resource detailing everything you would need or want to know about Sanibel Captiva Islands in Southwest Florida.  If Florida is on your list consider exploring it and paying a visit for an untourist and meaningful experience.   Untourism utilizes local expertise.  Imagine you are Nick and building a guide for your community.  What are the unique aspects of your community or region that would help visitors have a local experience? How do you capture adventures?  Have you ever considered having portraits taken while visiting a destination?  Photos are a critical piece to documenting adventures (which will have several upcoming episodes related to) and a great way to make sure everyone is included and have a quality non-selfie photo of the entire family.   As mentioned earlier in the show, I have several upcoming episodes with adventure author Johanna Garton.  She is the Author of Awakening East and Edge of the Map.  The first episode will dive into her adventure story which is Awakening East where she unfolds the story of international travel, adoption and living abroad with her family.  Part 2 will dive into Edge of the Map which Johanna authors the adventure story of Christine Boskoff, a world class alpine climber.  Awakening East is an older book so it may be hard to find in independent bookstores.  I am including the link to it on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2N9Mn3o  However, if you purchase Edge of the Map from her website www.johannagarton.com  and use the coupon code SHERPA for 25% off.  They are both great reads for on the beach or by the fire, wherever you might be right now and I can't wait to dive into them with Johanna in upcoming episodes.   Leave a written review:https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ordinary-sherpa-family-adventure-coaching-and-design/id1539255067 Subscribe to our Adventure to-go email newsletter:  https://ordinarysherpa.com/  Join the Facebook Group:https://www.facebook.com/groups/ordinarysherpa Follow:https://www.instagram.com/ordinarysherpa/ Check additional resources on our website: https://ordinarysherpa.com/
