If a doctor or a nurse makes a mistake with your care, or the care of a loved one, you would expect to be told about it. But putting in place a process where there is a duty of candour within the health service is proving extremely difficult. Northern Ireland remains the only part of the UK or Ireland not to have one. The Hyponatraemia inquiry into the deaths of five children in hospital put the focus on the need for it. The inquiry chair Mr Justice O'Hara said some of the witnesses had to have the truth dragged out of them. The health minister says he hopes to introduce one in before the next Assembly election, but why is it so challenging? Audrey Carville is joined by Deirdre Heenan (professor of social policy at Ulster University) and Peter McBride (an independent consultant who has been working with the Department of Health on building a framework for a duty of candour).

Keir Starmer has promised to introduce legislation to parliament – before this April's anniversary of the Hillsborough football stadium disaster – that would extend a statutory duty of candour to public authorities and officials. Starmer hopes that the new Hillsborough law, which will require government organisations and officials to be truthful and to proactively co-operate with investigations and inquiries, will “address the unacceptable defensive culture prevalent across too much of the public sector” exposed in the Infected Blood, Post Office Horizon and too many other inquiries. But how widely will the duty be applied? How can it work alongside other statutory duties such as in the civil service code? What lessons can be taken from the legal duty of candour that has existed, with mixed effect, in the NHS for over 10 years? To discuss these outstanding questions about the scope and remit of the proposed legislation, and explore how this new duty of candour could help embed a culture of transparency from SW1 to the frontline, we were joined by an expert panel: Sir Robert Francis KC, Interim Chair of the Infected Blood Compensation Authority Liz Gardiner, CEO of Protect Pete Weatherby KC, Director of Hillsborough Law Now Campaign The event was chaired by Alex Thomas, Programme Director at the Institute for Government.

Prefabrication in construction

Prefabrication can get a bad wrap in the sustainable building world but when used in the right way, it can be a powerful tool for building sustainable and affordable homes. We recently sat down with prefabrication pioneers Chris Gilbert and Kaia McCarty Smith to discuss how it can support a better building future. Chris is the co-founder of Candour, a prefabrication company that aims to address the challenges faced by builders and architects. Unlike typical prefab companies, Candour doesn't focus on volumetric prefabs but rather on a panelised fabrication with a significant emphasis on software development. This means they aren't just building physical structures; they're also building digital solutions that help bridge the gap between architects and fabricators.Their unique software ties seamlessly into common architectural tools like Archicad, providing real-time pricing and fabrication limits. This ensures architects design structures within practical and budget-friendly bounds, ultimately reducing costs and improving efficiencies from the start. On the other hand, Kaia shared his experience using prefabs as a builder and the force behind Wilderness Building Co. He explained that prefabrication offers a streamlined, efficient, and precise way to construct, with benefits in controlling quality and reducing on-site errors. These advantages are crucial, especially when considering issues like labour costs and the need for quicker building timelines. As builders, we've always been aware of the resistance to change in our industry. Australians, by nature, are wary of deviating from traditional building norms. But is it time to embrace prefabrication fully? Chris believes that while prefab isn't the silver bullet, it's certainly part of the solution. Matt also brought up the rising costs of labour, and the difficulties that causes in the Australian market. Automating processes, as prefabrication allows, might be a great solution. However, it's also about ensuring buildings remain affordable and comfortable for everyone, which continues to be a complex balancing act.So, whether you're an architect, builder, or part of the wider construction community, it's time to consider prefabrication. It might not be the complete answer, but it could be a big step towards a sustainable future for construction. As the daughter of immigrants, Sahaj Kaur Kohli grew up understanding what it means to straddle multiple cultures at once. She wrestled with questions like what it meant to forge one's path, establishing personal values while embracing one's origins; if prioritizing mental health meant a rejection of culture; how to set boundaries and engage in self-care when family and community are so important. Even after becoming a therapist herself, she saw those same gaps in the mental health world, leading her to wonder, like so many children of immigrants: what about us? Kohli's latest book, But What Will People Say? Navigating Mental Health, Identity, Love, and Family Between Cultures, weaves together personal narratives with research. She offers advice and tools for everything from navigating generational trauma, guilt, and boundaries, to breaking down stigmas around therapy and celebrating cultural duality. While mental health is arguably less stigmatized than before, models can often be individualistic and Eurocentric. Kohli aims to both democratize and decolonize the way we think about mental health and self-help, shifting the paradigm, incorporating community building, and speaking to those who are left out of the dominant narratives. Sahaj Kaur Kohli, MaEd, LGPC, is the founder of Brown Girl Therapy (@BrownGirlTherapy), the first and largest mental health and wellness community organization for adult children of immigrants; a licensed therapist; and a columnist for the Washington Post's advice column Ask Sahaj. Sahaj's words and work have been featured in Today, Good Morning America, CNN, TED, The New York Times, HuffPost, and more. Sahaj also serves as a consultant, educator, and international speaker. She has sat on panels and delivered workshops and keynotes for nonprofits, higher education institutions, and the White House. This is her first book. Ruchika T. Malhotra is the best-selling author of Inclusion on Purpose: An Intersectional Approach to Creating a Culture of Belonging at Work. Ruchika is also the founder of Candour, an inclusion strategy practice. A former international business journalist, Ruchika is a regular contributor to The New York Times and Harvard Business Review and a recognized media expert on inclusive leadership and workplace culture. Can you think of occasions where you wanted to say something, but couldn't? Perhaps you stopped yourself out of fear, or due to outside pressures. Having a seat at the table doesn't necessarily mean that your voice is welcome. A new book is aiming to examine the influence of silence and offer ways that we can begin to dismantle it to find our voices at home and work to shift the paradigm. In Unlearning Silence: How to Speak Your Mind, Unleash Talent, and Live More Fully author Elaine Lin Hering explores the difficulty that can come with speaking up, especially when there may be incentives to stay silent to avoid unwanted consequences. Hering discusses how we as a society have learned to be silent, how we have benefited from silence, and how we have silenced other people. She also offers advice on how we can choose another way,  creating new patterns, becoming more complete versions of ourselves, engaging more fully with our talents, and helping others do the same. Elaine Lin Hering is a facilitator, speaker, and writer. She works with organizations and individuals to build skills in communication, collaboration, and conflict management. He has taught world leaders leadership at Harvard and runs its global consultancy. Today, Todd helps the leaders of household names to transform their cultures and their business results. Todd shares some of the most important lessons he has learned in the process of doing this. To explore how to get unstuck on your mission, put your purpose into practice and convert your ideas into impact book a discovery call with David here https://calendly.com/david-peoplewithpurpose/30min KEY TAKEAWAYS Your ability to make a difference is intricately connected to your ability to influence others. Leadership is fundamentally about connecting with and mobilizing people to confront and deal with problems and opportunities. Remember, if you are part of the problem, you can be a part of the solution. People fall into bad habits and end up regularly sabotaging themselves and their projects. Chris explains how to recognise and deal with this. Fear is usually what is behind bad outcomes. Analysing the language you use will tell you why you are struggling to progress. Most people hold back too much. Learn to share important information that others may not particularly want to hear in a palatable way that does not isolate others. Chris explains how in the episode. Companies want people to speak up, be honest and stop working in silos or tribes. BEST MOMENTS ‘How you lead in any kind of scenario in life is going to be heavily influenced by psychology.' ‘People are wired to avoid discomfort or exert control or a passive-aggressive combination of the two.' ‘Candour is an essential feature of leadership.' ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far, we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. ABOUT THE HOST David Roberts is a highly regarded CEO, mentor, and investor with 30 years of experience across multiple sectors. Wickham's absence, however, sets the trajectory of her heart askew, directing all her latent displeasure towards the seemingly unjustifiable Mr. Darcy. This chapter is a haven of the understated, and Austen's genius foreshadows the banal and profound. Candour and subtext coalesce as we witness Elizabeth caught in a whirlwind of emotions: her acute disappointment, her escalating dismay, and her decision to shield herself from Mr. Darcy. Yet, as we observe how quickly her spirits regain their equilibrium, we catch a gleaming glimpse of Elizabeth's unassailable resilience. This chapter ushers in a breath of understanding as Elizabeth dances with Darcy himself and encounters snippets of his concealed character. Despite the surprise, the looming dread, and the assumed lack of congenial companionship, an unforeseen dialogue evolves between them, propelled by an undercurrent of curiosity, judgement, and an irresistible allure they are yet to comprehend fully.

In this conversation, Ruchika and I discuss how leaders can adapt their hiring practices to attract more diverse candidates — and ultimately support inclusion inside their organizations. We discuss the importance of what to both include and avoid in job postings. Plus, we examine how well-intended interview practices can sometimes have unintended results on supporting diversity and inclusion. Key Points Make the hiring process transparent from start to finish. Include an authentic equal opportunity statement. Refrain from using certain words in job listings. Examples include: rockstar, ninja, hacker, guru, manage, build, aggressive, fearless, independent, analytic, and assertive. Emphasize skills and experience over professional degrees. Avoid panel interviews and refrain from asking questions or having conversations about culture fit.
