We chat with Reshma Sohoni (@rsohoni) and Tom Wilson (@tom_wils) from Seedcamp (@seedcamp). We discuss building Seedcamp into Europe's most prominent first cheque venture investor, the evolution of the European technology ecosystem and talent clusters. Reshma also sheds light on investing early in UiPath and their journey to their recent IPO.
Not many people know that Evan Frank introduced our now-managing partners Carlos Espinal and Reshma Sohoni to each other during Seedcamp’s infancy. Even fewer are aware that Reshma was his first boss in NYC. And virtually no one (likely not even the Seedcamp Team) knows that Evan was single-handedly responsible for onboarding Seedcamp onto Gmail. But Evan Frank’s accomplishments far surpass his influence on Seedcamp’s leadership and tech-stack. After leaving a career in growth equity in 2010, he co-founded onefinestay, a pioneering brand in the alternative accommodation industry, offering short-term stays in high-end urban real estate. After raising $80M from Index Ventures, Canaan Partners, and Hyatt Hotels, onefinestay was acquired by Accor hotels for $200M in 2016. Following the acquisition, Evan was appointed CEO, running the global organisation with over 500 employees. Throughout this founder journey, Evan learned about building company culture through servant leadership and scaling operations using OKRs. Today, he sits down with Seedcamp’s Carlos Espinal to discuss his growth journey to-date and share what he’s up to now building Okra Labs, a firm helping teams incorporate KPI-driven goal setting & management frameworks. Reshma Sohoni is Founding Partner at Seedcamp. Seedcamp invests early in world-class founders attacking large, global markets and solving real problems using technology. In this episode of The SaaS Revolution Show she joins SaaStock's Alex Theuma to share how Seedcamp's investment strategy has developed since they started (thirteen years ago!), and how the funding environment in Europe has changed during that time.
The time and cost it takes to build things has come way down for all kinds of startups. So, unless you are deep in the R&D game, the answer to, “How long have you been working on this?” takes on deeper significance, says Seedcamp’s Reshma Sohoni. The speed to market, and the speed with which competitors also crop up, has vastly increased since Sohoni co-founded the London-based seed investment in 2007. “Particularly in the world of consumer and SaaS it is (now) an execution game, and a go-to-market game rather than it is fundamentally tech infrastructure as a moat,” Sohoni says. “So, a lot of our questioning and push is around the brilliance (a founder demonstrates) around go-to-market."
“I think the worst thing is every morning when you wake up as a founder and you pick up your phone, you think what will I discover that will ruin my day?”While your business might not care what your gender is, significant discrepancies still exist between the number of female and male entrepreneurs. As Baroness Martha Lane Fox quite rightly proclaimed, ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’. And so we’ve gone and put four female entrepreneur powerhouses together on the same live stage. We’ve put the same questions to them and their answers are as diverse as they are. This episode on female leadership and equality for International Women’s Day is a real smorgasbord of insights from some of the UK's leading female founders. Get the expert investor perspective from Reshma Sohoni, co-founder of Seedcamp. The non-VC route founder Renée Elliott, founder of Planet Organic. Alex Depledge offers the perspective from a consumer facing tech enabled marketplace, with her startup Hassle. And finally our technology software entrepreneur, Alicia Navarro, whose company Skimlinks has raised over $25 million helping publishers monetise advertising. “If being a woman is the hardest thing you have to deal with in your journey, sorry, you’re fucking lucky. Because that is the easiest challenge you're gonna have to deal with. If you can't handle that, if you can’t handle a couple of dickheads in the corner that belittle you, you're just not going to make it. I'm sorry, but that is the truth. It is hard and relentless. And if you can't handle people that make you feel like shit, that's like peanuts in the corner.”We chat about:Why not every business should take VC fundingThe toughest moments of their entrepreneurial journeys so farTheir different perspectives on funding and financing a businessHow to choose your role modelsLinks:https://www.secretleaders.com/reshma-sohonihttps://www.secretleaders.com/alicia-navarrohttps://www.secretleaders.com/alex-depledgehttps://www.secretleaders.com/renee-elliotWant to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? On this episode Abadesi sits down with Reshma Sohoni, co-founder and managing partner of Seedcamp. She co-founded the firm in 2007 and works with the Seedcamp team and their portfolio companies to help push early stage companies from difficult times to household names. In this episode they discuss... How Seedcamp discovers, attracts (and retains!) hidden talent “We do recruit from odd places. Forty percent of our team are working mothers. On the accounting and legal side, it’s a job you can do remotely and can do with kids. We’ve recruited folks who are senior and could be doing other things, but we’ve given them flexibility and they’ve chosen to work with us.” Reshma talks about some of the unique ways they have been able to compete for talent that others in the industry miss. She also talks about why diversity is important to the team and how being authentic about their values has helped them find people who mesh well with the culture. How they’ve built a strong culture at Seedcamp Reshma explains why they have clearly articulated not just want they want their employees to do, but also what they want their employees not to do. They discuss the rule at Seedcamp that a meeting should never produce another meeting, and some of the other ways that they have differentiated their culture from other VC firms. “One of the things we say is that you’re CEO of Function X and you should run it like that. Obviously the negative is, how do you get them to work together and talk to each other? We’re conscious of that. We’ve built in online and offline systems to make sure all those pieces connect together. But that autonomy is a huge part of retention.” Her advice for people who want to work in VC “It helps to do jobs you don’t like early in your career. It’s huge. You really figure out what your weaknesses are and also therefore identify what your strengths are.” Reshma talks a bit about how she got into venture capital, how it has changed and how she would advise young people looking to get into the VC game today. “We don’t do interviews in a traditional style. It’s very much a multi-party dialog around how you’ll fit, what are your ambitions, and how do we help those?” Why founder mental health has been getting more attention and how VCs can help the cause Reshma talks about how they’ve taken a different approach to helping founders when it comes to some of the personal difficulties they face in building a company. She points out that some of these issues are not thing that they can discuss at for example, a board meeting. She says that they are investing in companies that can help alleviate some of these pressures generally, both for founders and others. Which spaces she’s most excited about investing in “We’ve made a number of investments in personalized health. We think that’s the biggest opportunity humanity has had. We believe a lot in that and we’re investing in it.” Reshma talks about some of the products she uses from their portfolio companies and why in addition to the healthcare space, why she’s also excited about FinTech. And of course, they talk about some of her favorite products and what the Seedcamp team uses to stay productive. We’ll be back next week so be sure to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify, Breaker, Overcast, or wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. Our guest this week is one of the best networked ladies in UK tech, as the Co Founder of not only the first ever, but also arguably the most successful Seed Fund in Europe, Seedcamp. By only part-selling their stake in their most successful investment, they’ve already returned their entire fund back, as the high profile FinTech unicorn Transferwise was originally developed before Reshma’s eyes and with her support and brainpower. With over 200 investments to her name, its not fair to focus only on their largest, as they’ve backed many really exciting winners, which she’ll be talking to us about in this episode. With her roots from India, teenage years in America, and an MBA in france, it’s Europe she’s chosen of the 3 continents to call home, and it’s fair to say she’s had a huge impact on the technology scene.

GeekGirl sat down with Reshma Sohoni, Founding Partner at Seedcamp, an early-stage investor in tech startups, to find out more about the world of Venture Capital, finance and what it takes to be a tech investor. Reshma has always combined technology and business from university to today. Getting degrees in both Engineering and Business (UPenn M&T) meant that from an early age she was cultivating a path that would always bring business and technology together. Early on in her career during the height of the dot-com boom, Reshma worked in M&A and venture capital across B2B Software and Internet services businesses in the US and India. She had a small helping hand in building MakeMyTrip (NASDAQ) in its formative days. Following on from this, Reshma went to INSEAD and earned her MBA, fell in love with Europe and stayed on to work in Commercial and Marketing Strategy at Vodafone. Starting Seedcamp in 2007 was a once in a lifetime opportunity and one that she jumped into with a strong desire to help the European founder realize global success.
