Angel Investing EXPLAINED ft. Brian Nichols: Active Angel Investor & Founder of Hustle Fund's Angel Squad

This week we're talking all things angel investing with the enthusiastic & knowledgable, Brian Nichols. In this explained episode, Erica and Brian chat through what exactly angel investing is, who can be an angel investor, how to get deal flow, how to evaluate startups once you get that deal flow, and so much more. Most importantly, Brian shares his story as an angel investor and why/how he joined the Hustle Fund team to build Angel Squad.Over the last decade, Brian has helped build Lyft, Zoox, On Deck, and BlackBird past a combined market cap of over $5B, and helped raise $500M. In 2019, he decided to try something new. He decided to shift his focus from building businesses to investing in them. He teamed up with Ann Miura-Ko to start Uplyft (Lyft alumni syndicate) and it started with 300+ of Lyft's earliest employees who have invested over $30M+ together. He soon found myself becoming the go-to "alumni syndicate guy” and helped Airbnb, Stripe, Pinterest, DoorDash, and many others get their alumni syndicates off the ground. After opening up the Lyft alumni syndicate to the public (any accredited investor can join, regardless of affiliation with Lyft), he started to notice a trend. There were folks from all over the world, all professional backgrounds, who were investing alongside them. These folks didn't have access to a network, the knowledge, and the guidance that he was lucky to have. So, in October 2020, less than a year into the pandemic, he quit his job and joined Hustle Fund – his favorite early-stage VC – to build Angel Squad. The results were pretty phenomenal. In 2.5 years, 1,400+ people joined Angel Squad, and as a group, they have invested $21M+ in 50+ startups. They have reporters, scientists, founders, and students from all over the world in their community.Follow Us!Brian Nichols: @b_nicks11Read Hustle Fund's Angel Investing Starter Kit HEREErica Wenger: @erica_wengerDear Twentysomething: @deartwentysomething

What does Ann believe is the secret to successful seed investing? What insight development did Ann believe Lyft had? How had they approached customer development in such a unique way? What are the leading signals to Ann today that founders really understand the customer development process? What questions does she ask to discover this? 3.) Why does Ann not engage in the compression of fundraising timelines today? How does she build relationships of trust and honesty with founders so early? Does Ann worry that founders have such large capital injections too early today? Why should employees examine capital efficiency, not capital raised? How does Ann advise founders on pre-emptive rounds? 4.) How did Ann and the Lyft team approach prioritization in the early days? In what ways did Lyft decide to "play their own game" when it came to the competition? How did Uber and its growth impact the financing strategy for Lyft? In what deliberate ways did John and Logan set the culture for Lyft? What have been Ann's biggest lessons from them on culture building? 5.) Does Ann believe that capital in itself is a competitive moat today? What does Ann believe needs to be proven before capital can be used as a weapon to win? In the case of Lyft, what signals or measurements did Ann define as guiding metrics for success? How did they change over time? How can founders determine their own in their businesses?

She'll be hosting more episodes alongside me this year. Ann Miura-Ko is a founding partner at Floodgate, a seed-stage VC firm in Palo Alto. She is also a lecturer in entrepreneurship at Stanford's School of Engineering and a founding member of All Raise. In this episode we talk about: Ann recounts how she got to where she is today, including what it was like growing up with a NASA scientist for a dad. She talks about some of the formative moments in her career and explains why she says that a “career path” is a misnomer. The mentors that have helped Ann throughout her career, and why she never approaches a relationship with an expectation of mentorship, but instead always “begins with an act of service.” Why the tech industry should always take a step back to question whether everyone prospers from its work, the five values that drive her investments at Floodgate, and why they tell entrepreneurs “your life's work is our life's work.” How she manages her children's relationships with social media (“browsing Instagram feels like not being invited to every party everyone else is having”), how she is personally working to increase the number of underrepresented founders, and the business benefit of diversity. We also discuss some of their favorite products including an old-fashioned note-taking system for the digital age, a better way to organize your tabs in Chrome, and a built-in CRM for your Gmail inbox. Becoming your best self sounds SO appealing. But what’s rarely talked about is the process you have to go through to get there - and that it’s not rainbows and butterflies. I’ve been a personal development addict for at least 5 years now and have found that I typically cycle through 3 stages as I continue to improve myself - discovery, implementation and recalibration (aka stagnation). I thought it might be helpful to share this so that when it feels like you’ve taken a few steps back, you’ll know that nothing has gone wrong. It’s just part of the process. I also thought it would be helpful in the sense that it will get you reflecting on what stage of personal growth you’re currently in and perhaps a few of the reasons why you’re not seeing the kind of change that you’re hoping for.  I hope you find the episode helpful! Why is voice an important part of one's future? How do we develop a sense of both individuality and community? In today's episode, Ann Miura Ko joins Christopher Lochhead to have a free-ranging conversation from being a mom, growing up an immigrant, and her eventual success that started with being a loser. “I don't know which end I value more, but ultimately I love the creativity of a society like ours more than having people look over my shoulder all the time.” - Ann Miura Ko Three Things We Learned Most public goods are things we don't enjoy This is mostly thanks to how humans treat public property. There's a view that when autonomous vehicles become a hit, people wouldn't have any real need to own private cars anymore. This leads to the question of whether we as humans would be able to stick to the moral duty of maintaining public goods without an actual, breathing person in the loop. Japan is the prime example of living as a community Ann is the daughter of two Japanese immigrants. Growing up, she would come to Japan and every single time, she ended up struck by the strong sense of community of the Japanese. People take care of public property and keep things clean and orderly for everyone's benefit and make sure everyone hold the same standards of living. Community or individuality Having someone watch your every move and breathe down your neck can be very oppressive in a sense, but so is the strong pursuit for freedom and freedom only. A strong sense of community can prevent people from doing something detrimental to the larger populace. But people also achieve happiness by embracing their individuality. Striking the balance of a sense of both community and individuality can be a quite the challenge. We have our social obligations to fulfill and we also have the personal mission to seek self-improvement in order to become successful at what we do. In fulfilling both our social and personal duties, however, we must remember that we can only truly develop character when no one is watching. It was called Air Bed and Breakfast. They had sold you know tens of thousands of dollars worth of cereal boxes McCain scrunchies and Obama owes to finance their business. They had sold only a small number of air bed space but could show that that was working to some extent but the business was selling air bed space not even a room not a couch and not definitely not a house and especially crowded locations where hotels had sold out. And so it's a very different business from what you see today. And you have to make that dotted line from what do I see today. What's different about this and where will it go. And sometimes you're wildly wrong on where will it go. But you're trying to figure out how this entrepreneur takes this idea there. Can she make it a reality? They would make something interesting happen. Matt: As a serial entrepreneur and angel investor. I'm of the belief that startups and early-stage companies change and define the world. I've seen a world and I believe many of us have corporations and governments have failed to innovate and change things that truly need changing and oftentimes it is a startup or a business incumbent that comes in and creates meaning lasting change in the world. In this episode, host Joe Beninato and guest Ann Miura-Ko of FLOODGATE answer listener questions including: - How does a CEO balance his/her time given the several responsibilities/opportunities? - FLOODGATE seems to focus on business plans through referals that you trust.  Why is that? How can somebody with a great product idea and great credentials get noticed? - If the company that I'm working at does a bridge loan, what does it mean? Do they have to tell their employees when they do a bridge loan? - I am having a disagreement with one of my investors over where to take our company (strategy-wise). Any suggestions on how to best navigate this? - What is the #1 reason startups fail? How do you avoid that issue? In the "Ask The Lawyer" segment, Mitch Zuklie of Orrick discusses the concerns of student entrepreneurs.
