Management Today's Leadership Lessons
Returning to Planet Organic feels like a “business fairytale”

The entrepreneurial journey is famously a bumpy one and Planet Organic founder Renée Elliott's story is testament to that. For her, seeing the vision for the business she founded interpreted (she prefers “eroded”) through other people's priorities over the years has been “excruciating, infuriating…and exhausting”. But in 2023, Elliott returned to Planet, more than a decade after she and her husband stepped away from the company. This unlikely “business fairytale” had an inauspicious start: a phone call informing her that Planet would be giving notice of administration in 30 minutes' time.In this week's episode of Leadership Lessons, Elliott revisits that moment, the scramble to rescue the company, and the collective effort since to pull Planet “out of the mud back into the light”.“There's no magic bullet in retail, as any retailer will tell you,” she says. Instead there are “50 or 100 things” you need to do to achieve a given goal (for Planet this is returning to profit this year). It's lucky, then, that the 30 years since the company's first store opened in Westbourne Grove, London, have taught Elliott a lot about resilience, which in her view starts with “care of self”.Just as important is to “trust yourself”. If you're having a tough time, Elliott says, there are many different ways in which you can respond. “But if you go into fear, panic about the future, or any kind of what I call contracted state, you go into stress and then you're not thinking your best; you're not accessing the knowledge, answers and intuition that you have inside of you.”If, on the other hand, you can trust yourself, “that stress falls away and you're in a much better place to manage through difficult situations”.*This interview with Renée Elliott was recorded in December 2024.Credits:Presenter: Antonia Garrett PeelProducer: Inga MarsdenArtwork: David Robinson Hosted on Acast. Creating a vegan butter that actually tastes amazing is no small feat, especially when you're committed to using natural whole food ingredients. But guess what? Mairi Hilleary of Mergulo has cracked the code!  Now, with listings on the high street at the likes of Whole Foods, Planet Organic, Holland and Barrett, and a host of independent grocers and delis, Mergulo Butter is proving that putting taste first in food product development is the secret sauce to winning over both consumers and stockists, whether they're vegan or not.  Mairi first reached out to Brand and Micah in the early days of Tastehead, and she joins the guys on the podcast (along with her sister and COO, Eliza) to spill the beans on the journey of bringing Mergulo to life. From crafting each block of butter by hand to expanding to more stockists and, hopefully, more mouth-watering flavours, Mairi and Eliza have taken Mergulo to new heights from their East London base. Mairi walks us through the lightbulb moment when the idea of 'creating a game-changing vegan butter that even non-vegans crave' struck her. She dove headfirst into recipe development, drawing on her Ballymaloe training to craft something truly delicious.  Launching a new contender in a well-established food category is never easy, but in this conversation, Mairi and Eliza share some invaluable lessons they've learned about securing that first listing and staying firmly on the map.Timestamps:00:44 Introducing Mergulo02:14 Developing the Recipe04:00 The Strengths of Working with Friends and Family06:37 Making Vegan Butter as Non-Vegans09:50 Founder's Story13:22 Mergulo's Biggest Challenge16:14 Core Values20:01 Behind the Name ‘Mergulo'21:40 Versatility (Not Just a Spread)23:22 Journey from Food Markets to 485 Holland & Barrett Stores27:17 The Benefits of Sampling30:43 The Future of Mergulo31:48 Mergulo's 5 Top Tips for Start-Ups34:56 Wrap Up Questions and Recommendations If you enjoy this episode, please consider subscribing. If you have any suggestions for future episode topics, please email them to hello@tastehead.comFollow Brandt and Micah:https://www.linkedin.com/in/brandt-maybury/https://www.linkedin.com/in/micah-carr-hill-34a91811/Visit https://www.tastehead.com/ to learn moreFollow Mairi:https://www.linkedin.com/in/mairi-hilleary-0a4bba108/?originalSubdomain=ukhttps://www.instagram.com/mergulobutter/Links Mentioned:Bread and Jam Festival - https://www.breadandjamfest.com/The Food Hub - https://www.facebook.com/groups/thefoodhubforum/Acme Fire Cult - https://www.acmefirecult.com/Ombra - https://www.ombrabar.restaurant/Wells Street Kitchen - https://www.instagram.com/wellstreetkitchen/?hl=enHow To Fail - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/how-to-fail-with-elizabeth-day/id1407451189

Would you go back to save the business you started, when you'd already walked away?  Renée Elliott had to fight for her business, Planet Organic, right from the start. Two years after they launched in 1995, her then-business partner tried to force her out, which culminated in a High Court battle. Renée won and along with her husband Brian who came on as Managing Director, took back control of the business. They ran it together for ten years.  Then, in 2009 they decided to step away from the business to raise their children. They moved to Italy, then returned to the UK, where Renée started a coaching and wellbeing business, Beluga Bean. Nine years after she stepped back from the business, Renée sold the majority of her shares in Planet Organic.  She'd done it, achieved the entrepreneur's dream, built a business, sold it and could now relax… or that's what everyone thought.  In May 2023 Renée made headlines when she led a bid to buy Planet Organic after it was announced the company was going into administration.  It's an extraordinary journey, but one Renée has not been able to be completely open about…until now. ------------------------------- We'd love your feedback hello@secretleaders.com Sponsor links: vorboss.com/secretleaders scoreapp.com/secretleaders personio.com/secretleaders vanta.com/secretleaders

The Possibility Club podcast: Practical Bravery REBEL SUPERMARKETS!   Whatever is going on, it is clear that the business models of Lidl, Aldi, Asda and Tesco are extraordinarily good if what we want as a society is cheap food, and lots and lots of it, whilst shareholders and private pension funds quietly top slice the return.   Is that what we want?   In this episode of The Possibility Club the spotlight is on the 21st century supermarket. And the practical bravery of a particular family who decided that the British public maybe don't want squeezed farmers, low quality processed gunk and lots of waste, a lack of control and a net benefit to invisible billionaires.   A supermarket rebel with a cause, co- founder of the Hisbe supermarket shops and The Good Business Club and a legend in the social enterprise world, who has just finished successful £100k crowdfunded to supercharge her mission further... this is our chat with Ruth Anslow. ----------   “I've been called mad many times. I'm not kidding myself that's going to happen in my lifetime, I'm probably just a baton-bearer for the next lot, who'll do it a lot better than us. But we've had a go, we've created a model.”    “We've saved over a million pieces of plastic packaging from going into landfill by selling stuff loose. We've created enormous impact for the local food chain and the local economy.”   “Our goal now is to grow the Sussex chain and grow a hub of Sussex stores, to scale up the local suppliers, to amplify those impacts, so we're an engine for creating community assets and societal value for the local economy, so that's ready by 2030.”   “We've got this vision for a kind of operating system, a ‘how to HISBE' that's held digitally that we can licence and partner and franchise bits of, and open-source and give other bits of, so we can help create shops like ours all over the country.”   Be The Earth Foundation match-funded the crowdfunder https://www.betheearth.foundation/   HISBE's successful crowdfunder https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/hisbe-more-than-a-shop   AVIVA match-funded the crowdfunder https://www.aviva.co.uk/   “We need radical collaboration between all the people who are sowing seeds.”   Better Food, Bristol https://betterfood.co.uk/   Planet Organic https://www.planetorganic.com/   Caroline Lucas website https://carolinelucas.com/   "There's an incredible collaborative effort locally to build good policy and to challenge central policy by collaboration and consolidating efforts.”   Brighton & Hove Food Partnership https://bhfood.org.uk/   “I want HISBE to be famous, because it's a blueprint for how it should be. Say hi to Gabriel Bean. Him and his business partner Bryn Ferris, launched Grounded in 2020 and are the most natural plant-based protein drink out there. Listed in the likes of Whole Foods, Selfridges and Planet Organic - they are on a mission to make the cleanest protein shakes on the planet, using only real ingredients straight from the ground. Turns out it's harder than you think.  Thing is, when you start a brand your ideals quickly have to face up to business realities. ‘I want my [insert underloved F&B brand] to be the most sustainable, delicious, ethical, affordable product in the world'. ‘Ah that's going to cost WHAT!?! per unit. No one's going to pay for that. I guess we'll have to cut some corners or start again to get the price down'.  But Gabriel ain't cut from the same cloth as the rest of us. His guiding mantra - ‘don't compromise on anything'. Half mad scientist, half charming-down-to-earth-founder - he wears his obsessive tendencies with style. And it seems to be working. They are now the best selling protein shake in Wholefoods and Planet Organic (outselling Huel and many others) and the No.1 Dairy-free protein shake on Amazon.  Why is this? Well their m*lkshakes (with an asterisk instead of the i) hit all the right notes: high protein, vegan, no dairy - free from gluten, soya, nuts & GMOs. They also taste and look damn good with Chocolate and Mint Chocolate options online and on shelf. They join a playful army of function-first brands reinventing categories with higher protein and lower sugar alternatives with flair, authenticity and personality.  In this episode we tuck in to the challenges and realities of starting a F&B brand, what ‘no compromise' really looks like and why blurring the lines of m*lkshakes with protein is perfect for a new generation who like their lines blurred.  Enjoy.

(I loved this conversation so much I couldn't wait until the next series.) Renee Elliot has for a long time believed anything is possible. But she didn't know what her own purpose was until she went to a health food store in Boston – her love of learning and passion for health led her to create the first organic supermarket in the UK – Planet Organic. Renee went on to build a multi-million pound brand. She had no business experience and learned everything she needed to on the job.  In this conversation she talks about the twists and turns, the struggles and the wins in a story I'm sure you'll agree is worthy of a Hollywood film. She has won many awards, was invited to meet the Queen and has helped so many live healthier lives. And if that isn't enough, Renee is now helping others to create their happiest lives too – passing on everything she'd wished she'd known when she was starting out. Her second company, Beluga Bean, is a business and life skills academy. Renee believes we all have everything we need within us and when we can truly start being ourselves and letting go of fears, this is where the magic begins. She tells us how we can find self-belief, work out what our own passion is and she tells us why she's holding her first ever retreat bringing women together. I have so much fun on ScaleUp Radio with my guests and I absolutely loved my conversation today with Zoe Henderson who is the founder of Fungtn – pronounced Function and Zoe explains the origins of the name.  Zoe is just such a lively personality and really passionate about what she does. And this is such an unusual idea, it seemed it to me anyway, because Zoe is on a journey of creating a brand around an alcohol free craft beer that's brewed with functional mushrooms. We talk about all different aspects of it, and the benefits of something called adaptogenic compounds that are found in functional mushrooms and how they work in line with the body's natural rhythms. But we had so much fun talking about this and then talking about the different parts of her journey so far.  Zoey started her business during lockdown, self funded with a small startup loan and some credit cards. Zoey then successfully launched the product initially through direct to consumer sales and then expanding into retail and on-trade raising angel investment crowdfunding scaling the business now to 200 independent stockists in the UK and with distribution in the US and Canada.  So some great success already, and we discuss all sorts of things like pricing point, market positioning, also things around the early stages of launching Fungtn including the importance for her focusing on DTC, partly driven by the changes around lockdown, but some key milestones around getting Planet Organic on board, the importance of LinkedIn to her.  All sorts of things that we discussed here is just action packed with benefits much like her drink, I think. so you're going to really enjoy this episode. so let's just go straight across and listen to the conversation with Zoe.   Zoe can be found here: linkedin.com/in/zoey-henderson-b9848b9a https://www.fungtn.com/ hello@fungtn.com https://www.instagram.com/fungtn.brewing/   Resources: Fantastic Fungi on Netflix - https://www.netflix.com/title/81183477 Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets - https://www.waterstones.com/book/mycelium-running/paul-stamets/9781580085793 Entangled Life by Merlin Sheldrake - https://www.waterstones.com/book/entangled-life/merlin-sheldrake/9781784708276 The Mushroom Hour - https://www.welcometomushroomhour.com/blogs/podcasts Mushroom Revival - https://www.mushroomrevival.com/blogs/podcast Google Maps - https://www.google.co.uk/maps   Scaling up your business isn't easy, and can be a little daunting. Renée Elliott had no real inkling of what her purpose was, until walking down the aisle of a health food store in Boston. Little did she know that this moment would ignite her dream, and lead to her opening the first organic supermarket in the UK in 1995 — Planet Organic.  With no prior experience but a determination to build a business that would make a difference to people's lives, Renée learnt ‘on the job' when she had an idea to bring organically grown food to the mainstream shopper.  However, Renée's world was turned upside down when her business partner tried to take ownership of the business in a period where Planet Organic was thriving. Renée opens up about this achingly stressful experience, how she battled through it, and how it has shaped the person she is today.  Renée is a true trailblazer we can all learn from, with an inspirational mindset and shares with Holly the guiding principles she's learnt on her journey so far. She's an unapologetically emotional, female founder, continuing her mission to spread positivity and encourage people to live the healthiest, happiest life possible — as demonstrated through her second business, Beluga Bean.  This conversation is a tonic for anyone that needs to hear why, “Everything will always be okay”.  If you would like to work with Renée at Beluga Bean, you can email her at renee@belugabean.com, and if enjoyed this episode, head on over to hear Holly's talk with Greg Hoffman, Nike's former CMO, which we think you'll love too.  Plus for more unfiltered insight, subscribe to Holly's weekly newsletters on our website, where she shares small business inspiration of all kinds, exclusive nuggets of wisdom from her and her guests, plus offers, creative ideas and topical, 'ungoogleable' business advice.

George Dymond, Chief Executive Officer of the organic supermarket chain Planet Organic, has a remarkable CV; featuring senior jobs at Morrisons, Tesco and Holland & Barrett.   But as he has come on board at Planet Organic, there have been rapid expansion plans announced.     So how do you go about executing a large expansion in a period where customers' food and fuel prices are going up, when your own food and fuel prices are going up, and after the past couple of years of economic turmoil? It takes a fascinating combination of attributes to lead such change, especially in an organisation which has been a pioneer for organic food for a quarter of a century. I had the privilege of sitting down with Liz to discuss her journey to becoming an entrepeneur in the early days, juggling motherhood, and coming full circle to focusing on her brand and the wellbeing side.  I remember growing up with my Mum using Liz Earle products, and I always remember the emphasis on natural beauty care that they brought, for the first time, to the centre stage.  For more than thirty years, Liz has remained a respected and award-winning authority in the world of beauty, natural nutrition, health and wellbeing. She is dedicated to sharing her knowledge as a broadcaster (having started her TV career on ITV's This Morning in 1989, she's still a contributor to the show), writer and trusted household name, as well as being a best-selling author with a range of lifestyle titles and a multi-brand founder.  Liz opens up about the trials and the tribulations of building a beauty empire, and how she got to where she is today. Liz Earle is a champion of women's health, media influencer, author of 36 books, TV presenter, podcast host and charity-founder. She is also on a mission to help women celebrate every stage of their lives – especially that all-important second half.  This week's sponsor: Hu Kitchen, a brand who I first fell in love with when I lived in Manhattan, New York. If you haven't heard of HU before, they are relatively new to the UK, bringing their chocolate goodness here in the last 6 months.  If you love chocolate like me - you are in for a treat! Hu kitchen are fairtrade and organic so it's nice to know that you're supporting a business that cares both about its consumers and where they get their ingredients from. At the moment it's only available in Whole Foods and Planet Organic but you can buy it online at hukitchen.co.uk and they've given me a discount code BEWELL20 for 20% off. This episode is so inspiring as we discuss the journey that Gracie has been through from creating the first bar in her Nutri-bullet for her sister Sophie, who had been diagnosed with a life threatening heart disease and therefore couldn't have any sugar, to now having it stocked in some of the biggest retailers in the UK such as Ocado, Wholefoods and Planet Organic. We also discuss hidden sugars and how although we may think that a "healthy snack bar" may be "healthy" there really are a lot of hidden sugars in products that we don't realise are there. In February 2019, Banana Scoops was just an outrageously innovative concept that Jess had been thinking about whilst working her “normal job”. A concept that created “nice cream” from bananas and other natural ingredients to make a “healthy” alternative to our favourite chilled treat.Fast forward to just a year later and tubs of delicious Banana Scoops can now be seen in the freezer aisle in major retailers such as Ocado, Planet Organic and As Nature Intended. What’s so outstanding about this achievement is that Jess managed to do all of this on her own. No team, no huge budget, just a lot of hard work and a strong want to create the highest quality product. We chat to Jess to see just how she has managed to do all this on her own and what it’s like to connect with such major national brands. How she managed the many barriers and lessons thrown her way, and what advice she can offer to anyone looking to grow a start up to such a scale in one year without a team behind them. Here’s just a snippet of the advice Jess offered during our chat….Retailers won’t chase you, you have to put yourself out there, grab hold of opportunities (even if it’s slightly terrifying!) and push for your brand to be noticed. When chasing suppliers, don’t follow up with a “just chasing the previous email” type of email. Always add additional value. Offer new developments, press articles, social engagement and just general good news pieces. You need to grab their attention and offer increased value on every touchpoint.Don’t let a lack of funds/human resource/skill set stop you. Jess put together a basic brand design herself to get going, she then pulled upon connections to get where she is now. Branding is vital in standing out as a food product, but you can add to your brand with a really quality product, an innovative product, and your passion. You can then pay an expert when you have the funds.Jess offers SO many more valuable insights as to how she has managed to achieved such a major milestone so early on. It is also so interesting to hear the process that goes behind meeting and getting the go ahead from a major brand.

Renée grew up a country girl in Mississippi, but fell in love with an Englishman on a night bus and moved to the UK. She brought with her not only an unshakeable self-belief and a drive to find meaning and purpose in life, but also a concern for food provenance after being horrified by meat farming back in the US. This led her to found Planet Organic in 1994 and open the UK’s first all-organic supermarket in Nottinghill the following year. This is the story of that journey and ultimately, how her conscious awareness for her own life and those close to her, led her to step away from the company in 2013 and embark on a new challenge with Beluga Bean - a mentoring and personal development programme for both business and life skills.

There is so much plastic waste from food packaging – whether it’s the plastic bag inside cereal boxes or plastic milk bottles, berry containers or yogurt cups – it begs the question, can we avoid all this plastic? While the big scale supermarket chains are slowly catching on, a brand-new breed of shops has come to life: zero-waste supermarkets. In this Episode of Sustainability Matters Today, I interview Catherine Conway, founder and CEO of Unpackaged, and a Champion of promoting a zero-waste lifestyle. Unpackaged sets up refill stations in stores around the UK, including Planet Organic and Waitrose, and customers bring their own refillable containers to fill them with products from the dispensers. This allows people to only buy the amount they need, limiting food waste while avoiding single-use plastics. Catherine also offers consulting services to help spread the idea of zero-waste stores as far as possible. We discuss the challenges Catherine encountered when inventing the refill system, her history of advocating the zero-waste movement since 2006, and how mainstream supermarkets are slowly joining their cause and much more! I hope you enjoy the episode!

“I think the worst thing is every morning when you wake up as a founder and you pick up your phone, you think what will I discover that will ruin my day?”While your business might not care what your gender is, significant discrepancies still exist between the number of female and male entrepreneurs. As Baroness Martha Lane Fox quite rightly proclaimed, ‘you cannot be what you cannot see’. And so we’ve gone and put four female entrepreneur powerhouses together on the same live stage. We’ve put the same questions to them and their answers are as diverse as they are. This episode on female leadership and equality for International Women’s Day is a real smorgasbord of insights from some of the UK's leading female founders. Get the expert investor perspective from Reshma Sohoni, co-founder of Seedcamp. The non-VC route founder Renée Elliott, founder of Planet Organic. Alex Depledge offers the perspective from a consumer facing tech enabled marketplace, with her startup Hassle. And finally our technology software entrepreneur, Alicia Navarro, whose company Skimlinks has raised over $25 million helping publishers monetise advertising. “If being a woman is the hardest thing you have to deal with in your journey, sorry, you’re fucking lucky. Because that is the easiest challenge you're gonna have to deal with. If you can't handle that, if you can’t handle a couple of dickheads in the corner that belittle you, you're just not going to make it. I'm sorry, but that is the truth. It is hard and relentless. And if you can't handle people that make you feel like shit, that's like peanuts in the corner.”We chat about:Why not every business should take VC fundingThe toughest moments of their entrepreneurial journeys so farTheir different perspectives on funding and financing a businessHow to choose your role modelsLinks:https://www.secretleaders.com/reshma-sohonihttps://www.secretleaders.com/alicia-navarrohttps://www.secretleaders.com/alex-depledgehttps://www.secretleaders.com/renee-elliotWant to receive our podcast on a weekly basis? Henrietta Norton’s book was at the very beginning of my holistic journey with endo, and it was her words and endometriosis diet plan that helped me to really understand nutrition for endometriosis. Henrietta is not only the author of one of the best books out there on endo, but she’s also the founder of Wild Nutrition, a nutrition clinic and company specialising in women’s health and Food-Grown® supplements including the Endo Complex, which you’ve probably heard me raving about because I take it every single day. Henrietta is not just passionate about good food, she’s got the science to back it up - Henrietta is a registered nutritional therapist, a Functional Medicine graduate and is currently studying Nutritional Medicine - and that’s why I love her. Henrietta’s book is full of evidence, research and data on nutrition for endometriosis. In this episode we talk about some of the key food groups which could worsen endometriosis symptoms, the optimum nutrition for endometriosis and go on a deep dive into how the rest of the body’s systems and organs can actually affect endometriosis for the better or worse. Thank you for downloading this episode of Talking Tastebuds, please make sure you’re ’subscribed’ so you never miss a show. This week, I am joined by a professional ballerina, cookery author, creator of Ballet Blast and all round over-achiever, Sassy Gregson-Williams, AKA Naturally Sassy. This pint-sized wonder has trained at some of the best and most competitive ballet schools in world, so I wanted to find out whether the stereotypical restrictive ballerina diet is fact or fiction. Sassy also explains how she got into food blogging before it was basic and how she developed a line of healthy snacks, which she managed to get into Whole Foods, Planet Organic and Ocado - aged just 16. Oh, and she’s also found the time to write a cook book and launch her new dance inspired class concept: Ballet Blast. It's no surprise that this beauty is in hot demand! If you’ve been affected by anything in this podcast: please head to beateatingdisorders.org.ukKeep up with Sassy on Instagram @naturally.sassy and with me @venetiafalconer See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
