Most plant-based meats in the US have centered around American staples like hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken nuggets, and sausages. But there's a world of meat consumption out there, and some of the most popular meat dishes are ones many Americans may have never even tried. In recent years, South Korea has seen great success exporting its culture around the world, with mega-popular K-dramas like Squid Game and The Parasite, K-pop like BTS, and yes, K-food like bibimbap. Now, South Korean plant-based meat player UNLIMEAT is bringing its twist on K-meat to thousands of US supermarkets. Already, the company's Korean-style alt-meats have been sold throughout Asia, including at Starbucks, Subway, Domino's, and more. And since they broke into the US market with a giant Times Square ad in 2022, the company is now making inroads into the American diet. With Korean-themed frozen products like bulgogi, pulled pork, and kimbap tuna, the company is betting that Americans will welcome new alt-meat offerings into their homes. In this episode, we talk with UNLIMEAT Co-CEO Ryan Chung, who's in charge of the American market for the young and growing company. While the brand was started in 2019, they've already raised well over $20 million USD, built a factory in Korea, and are shipping around the world.  As you'll hear, we discuss the challenges plant-based meat is facing these days and what might be done to overcome them, along with predictions for what the meat market may look like in 15 years. It's a compelling conversation with a leader in the space who's seeking to change the face of the alt-meat movement as we know it.  Discussed in this episode Ryan recommends reading The Innovators Paul recommends reading Quirky, whose author Melissa Schilling is a past guest on this show! Paul's photo of Quorn being marketed as essentially price parity with chicken in a London KFC. UNLIMEAT's partnership with Just Egg UNLIMEAT is available at Sprouts, Giant, Albertsons, on Amazon, and more. More about Ryan Chung Ryan Chung is a Co-CEO at UNLIMEAT, where Ryan also holds the titles of Head of International and Chief Strategy Officer. Ryan previously served as the Chief Operating Officer at BriteBelly and YBRAIN. He also worked at Tesla, handling various aspects of business operations. Ryan has a background in M&A from roles at Samsung NEXT and PwC, encompassing due diligence, post-deal value capture, and divestiture planning. With industry experience in technology, automotive, industrials, aerospace & defense, and consumer sectors, Ryan's expertise in operational strategy, new product development, and strategic analysis is well-rounded. Corporate venture capital investments have decreased over the past two years, with U.S.-based corporate investors involved in only 1,385 deals by mid-2024, maintaining last year's pace but significantly lower than in 2022. Despite prominent funding rounds, including Alphabet's $5 billion in Waymo and Disney's $1.5 billion in Epic Games, the overall deal flow remains low. Early-stage funding has seen 489 deals this year, down from over 700, while later-stage funding reflects a decrease from 270 in 2023 to 190 deals. Google Ventures leads in deal counts with 46 rounds, followed by Coinbase Ventures at 30, Samsung Next at 27, Salesforce Ventures tied at 26, and Nvidia at 21 rounds. A growing portion of U.S. startup funding is sourced from rounds backed by corporate investors, yet total deal numbers and investment capital are contracting, indicating that high-profile deals do not equate to increased corporate engagement. Data was collected as of September 13, 2024, focusing on corporate venture capital transactions to detail investment trends.Learn more on this news visit us at: https://greyjournal.net/ Hosted on Acast. Hello Moneda Moves listeners and welcome to a new season of the podcast, where we serve you stories about money and cultura from first builders. For the next few episodes we will be talking with multi-hyphenates of the business world: whether they're part-time models and VCs, a journalist turned Web3 company founder, or a community builder working for Paris Hilton and Fidelity at the same time, the super power shared here is that these leaders in their respective spaces transit different worlds, and with that comes rich lessons in money. Today, we're going to speak with Cheryl Campos, called “The Multihyphenate Queen” in article we wrote for Hispanic Executive, having transited investment banking, modeling, community building and venture capital. It's some of these many skills that led her to build La Familia, an ecosystem built just two years ago for Latino founders and venture capitalists to come together. Today, it supports more than 300 venture capitalists throughout their careers from breaking into venture to creating their own funds and is backed by the likes of SVB, Comcast, Samsung Next, Techstars, and more. I met Cheryl when we were early in pursuing our careers in New York City and from one first gen kid to another have very much enjoyed seeing her growth to Head of Growth and Partnerships at Republic, the investment platform helping everyday people get access to private markets. Recently, we spoke with her from Stanford Graduate School of Business, where she's getting her MBA. We talk about breaking into VC, the importance of community and the future of her career. In this episode of the Thoughtful Entrepreneur, your host Josh Elledge speaks with the Founder and Chief Conscious Connector of https://dotconnectllc.com/ (DotConnect), Dom Farnan.  DotConnect is a global talent advisory business that scouts and hires talent for technology businesses in the United States. DotConnect has a team of around 100 employees globally and has been around since 2019. Dom explains that DotConnect's growth can be attributed to many areas. Dotconnect doesn't work only with technology companies, they also have a big consumer products client that they work with now. They also have longer-term clients that are based on monthly retainers. Dom explains ghosting, not creating an optimized experience for hiring, and not understanding the talent or their values is some of the negative feedback that the recruiting space has received. The manner in which a leader comes off to their employees is what sets the stage for the work culture. Dom explains she had to do some self-reflection and work to create a better environment for her employees and that is how DotConnect has been able to grow so rapidly over the years.  Dom explains that DotConnect has grown from delivering against its promise and through referrals. The value of ownership and delivery is important to DotConnect as they are able to prove their worth and obtain or retain clients this way. Luckily the staffing climate today is much different than in April 2020. Dom advises that companies that are laying employees off the need to focus on key hiring. The ideal clientele for DotConnect would be a 50+ employee strong business that is building out the entirety of its organization at any level.     Key Points from the Episode: The impact DotConnect has on the world  How DotConnect is growing faster than other companies Recruiting Industry  How Dom's personal growth improved her business Personal life versus work life How to grow in a tactful way The state of staffing today  Ideal clientele for DotConnect    About Dom Farnan: Dom Farnan is the Founder and CEO DotConnect, where they find exceptional people for high-achieving companies. Robin Chase is the co-founder of Zipcar and the author of Peers Inc. Robin is a serial entrepreneur within the mobility and transportation sectors with a special focus on sustainability. Her mantra is to “everyday, create the world you want to live in”, meaning she's helping to create cities that are livable, environmentally sound, and full of joy for all who pass through them. Working closely at the intersectionality of transportation and climate change, Robin is a passionate advocate of our environmental impact. Since 2000, Zipcar has lowered CO2 emissions by 1.6 billion lbs per year and taken away the need for more than 415,000 privately owned cars. Her new initiative, The New Urban Mobility Alliance (NUMO) continues to further the aim of creating cities where the new normal is both sustainable and livable. In this far-reaching conversation Robin had a lot to say on how she manages her personal commitment to creating more sustainable futures whilst recognising the immensity of the task at hand and our chat with Robin is full of advice on: Ways to be impactful within a very complex global problem Why diversity and thinking of your “single and best use” are the most powerful tools Adapting and continuing to learn over time Why we're all role models to each other and so need to hold ourselves accountable It's a great episode for anyone interested in effecting a positive global change and if you're interested in platform companies such as Zipcar, or how to go about building them, check out Robin's new book, Peers Inc. Tamara Lunger is a high-altitude ski mountaineer. A big Thank You to The North Face for making it possible for us to record this episode with Tamara. Tamara was born in Bolzano, northern Italy, as the daughter of ski mountaineer, Hansjörg Lunger, she started ski mountaineering in 2002. Since 2009, Tamara has been a high-altitude climber meaning she makes her ascents without oxygen. On 23 May 2010, Lunger became the youngest ever female climber (aged 23 years, 11 months, and 17 days), to have reached the main summit of Lhotse. By the age of 30 she had climbed two of the world's four highest mountains (K2 and Lhotse) this was despite injuries and afflictions that meant every step taken was in pain. In this incredible episode Tamara tells us what it's like to traverse some of the world's most punishing summits, all whilst under considerable physical pain and mental stress. Within this, Tamara generously describes: - Coming face-to-face with death and the life-changing experience that resulted - How she prepares mentally about the fact she may potentially not return from a trip - How she's helped exhume dead bodies and body parts in order to take them back down a mountain - How she overcame her ego and turned around just 70m from the top of a mountain summit - How she separates the fear of doing something from its end experience (if she knows it will be beneficial) After some action-packed years of adventure, Tamara is currently in a period of reflection, meditation, and physical recovery which she also speaks about later on in the episode.
