In a time of suspicion, they affirmed their agreement with the wider Reformed Protestant tradition and testified to their shared commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Later formally owned by the churches, this confession stands not as a private statement, but as the united voice of congregations confessing the faith once delivered to the saints. Three and a half centuries later, churches far beyond London, spread throughout the nations, confess this same faith. This conference marks 350 years of that enduring testimony, as we meet in London to give thanks for the faith Christ has preserved and renew our calling to confess him faithfully in our own day. We will gather at Westminster Chapel, in the heart of London. This historic building will serve as the meeting place for churches and believers coming together to remember the past, rejoice in present unity, and look forward with renewed faithfulness. Pastor Jim Butler is joined by Dr. Richard Barcellos and Pastor David Charles for 8 theological questions (episodes #65–#72) covering Reformed Baptist history, Calvinism, covenant theology, biblical theology, and Lord's Day worship—all from a confessional Reformed Baptist perspective rooted in Scripture and the 1689 London Baptist Confession. Recorded April 9, 2026, on the eve of the Confessing the Faith Conference 2026 in Chilliwack, BC.
Where do Reformed Baptists actually come from? Many assume Particular Baptists are simply a refined branch of the Anabaptists. The historical record tells a different story. Pastor Jim Butler sits down with two of the Confessing the Faith Conference 2026 speakers, Pastor David Charles and Dr. Richard Barcellos, to trace the real origins of the Particular Baptists, why the first London Baptist Confession worked to distinguish them from the Anabaptists, and what recent historical scholarship has uncovered from the primary sources. What separates a confessional Reformed Baptist church from a Calvinistic Baptist church that follows teachers like John Piper or John MacArthur? In this conversation the pastors work through why Calvinism, narrowly defined as five points, does not capture what it means to be Reformed, and why confessional standards rather than gifted personalities mark out these churches. Ask FGBC is a digital ministry providing biblical, pastoral, and confessional answers to real questions submitted by believers, seekers, and those wrestling with assurance. Are Reformed Baptists more Baptist or more Reformed? Pastor David Charles answers by tracing the Reformed Baptist confession as a full flowering of the Protestant Reformation, and explains why the emphasis shifts depending on who is in the conversation. Unveiling the Heart of the Bible: Jesus Christ as the Scope of ScriptureDr. Richard Barcellos will provide a helpful treatment on the words "the scope of the whole" which are found in chapter 1, paragraph 5 of the Confession. He will conduct a survey of relevant historical theology to demonstrate that older divines understood this to be a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, specifically salvation by grace through faith in the only Redeemer of God's elect. He will then demonstrate the validity of this position from the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments.

Carlton Wynne, Jeremy Boothby, Lane Tipton, and Camden Bucey discuss 1689 Federalism and the old covenant. Continuing an ongoing conversation carried over several podcast episodes and YouTube videos, the panel interacts with views presented by Sam Renihan, Richard Barcellos, and Brandon Adams in “Two-Tier Typology and OT Salvation.” They responded specifically to Christ the Center episode 736 (John Owen, Jeremiah 31, and the Relationship between the Old and New Covenants) from last year, in which Camden Bucey spoke with Carlton Wynne and Will Wood at RTS Atlanta. That episode followed many of the covenant theological themes expressed by Jeremy Boothby in Christ the Center episode 693 (Typology and Covenant Membership in Hebrews). After surveying views presented by Nehemiah Coxe, Paul Jewett, and David Kingdon, the conversation focuses on the relationship of old covenant types to the accomplishment of redemption wrought by Jesus Christ in the new covenant.

Since I am in Cedar City, Utah, I started off the program with a discussion of the decline of Mormonism, its reasons, and how we need to be praying to be used of God to bring light to the darkness. Then I had to dive into some of the amazing things being claimed, asserted, and just plain lied about regarding the rise of this new form of -Reformed Thomistic Scholasticism- in our day. Responded to Richard Barcellos' accusation that when we submit scholastic terminology and frameworks to biblical analysis and standards we are engaging in -self-poping popery.- Yes, that's a direct quote. Also went back to John 17-5 to see if ---- ----------- ------- still means -the glory which I had with you- or whether somehow it had become -the glory predestined to be given to my human nature.-
