A new MP3 sermon from Grace Reformed Baptist Church is now available on SermonAudio with the following details: Title: For what cause are we to do good works? Speaker: Richard Barcellos Broadcaster: Grace Reformed Baptist Church Event: Sunday Afternoon Date: 8/4/2024 Length: 19 min.
In Episode 150 of Theology In Particular Dr. Richard Barcellos joins me one more time to talk about the scope of Scripture. This is now the fourth conversation we have devoted to this topic. In the first, Dr. Barcellos introduced the principle that Scripture has a scope, focus, or bullseye. In the second, Dr. Barcellos walked us through some passages in the New Testament to demonstrate that Christ and his Apostles interpreted the Old Testament Scriptures – the law, prophets, and Psalms – as having ultimate reference to Christ. In the third conversation, we look at 1 Peter 1:10-12 to further prove the point. In this fourth and final episode on the topic, we will consider Colossians 1:12-14. Unveiling the Heart of the Bible: Jesus Christ as the Scope of ScriptureDr. Richard Barcellos will provide a helpful treatment on the words "the scope of the whole" which are found in chapter 1, paragraph 5 of the Confession. He will conduct a survey of relevant historical theology to demonstrate that older divines understood this to be a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ, specifically salvation by grace through faith in the only Redeemer of God's elect. He will then demonstrate the validity of this position from the Scriptures of both the Old and New Testaments.

Carlton Wynne, Jeremy Boothby, Lane Tipton, and Camden Bucey discuss 1689 Federalism and the old covenant. Continuing an ongoing conversation carried over several podcast episodes and YouTube videos, the panel interacts with views presented by Sam Renihan, Richard Barcellos, and Brandon Adams in “Two-Tier Typology and OT Salvation.” They responded specifically to Christ the Center episode 736 (John Owen, Jeremiah 31, and the Relationship between the Old and New Covenants) from last year, in which Camden Bucey spoke with Carlton Wynne and Will Wood at RTS Atlanta. That episode followed many of the covenant theological themes expressed by Jeremy Boothby in Christ the Center episode 693 (Typology and Covenant Membership in Hebrews). After surveying views presented by Nehemiah Coxe, Paul Jewett, and David Kingdon, the conversation focuses on the relationship of old covenant types to the accomplishment of redemption wrought by Jesus Christ in the new covenant.

Since I am in Cedar City, Utah, I started off the program with a discussion of the decline of Mormonism, its reasons, and how we need to be praying to be used of God to bring light to the darkness. Then I had to dive into some of the amazing things being claimed, asserted, and just plain lied about regarding the rise of this new form of -Reformed Thomistic Scholasticism- in our day. Responded to Richard Barcellos' accusation that when we submit scholastic terminology and frameworks to biblical analysis and standards we are engaging in -self-poping popery.- Yes, that's a direct quote. Also went back to John 17-5 to see if ---- ----------- ------- still means -the glory which I had with you- or whether somehow it had become -the glory predestined to be given to my human nature.-

On this episode, I have the conclusion of my interview with Dr. Richard Barcellos on the subject of: "The entire New Testament is based on Jesus' view of himself in relation to the Old Testament." This is the beginning of a four part tweet Dr. Barcellos posted to Twitter on the 28 September 2020. Dr. Barcellos clarifies, "The sinless Son of God saw the Old Testament as that which pointed to him. The authors of the books of the NT not only agreed with this assessment, they wrote in light of it." I asked Dr. Barcellos to join me on the podcast and elaborate on the series of tweets and I believe the discussion will be a blessing to us all. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nahum-obrien/support
