There are at least as many styles of Storytelling (or DMing, or Gamemastering, or whatever) as there are Storytellers, most of whom have Strong Opinions about the best way to do things. We've had a bit of discussion here and there over our two seasons, but this week we—along with special guest and veteran Storyteller, Fetch—are having a roundtable on advanced Storytelling techniques we favor. This is especially geared towards Storytellers who have run a few Changeling games and gotten the hang of things, but are looking to try some new and more complex methods at their table. Have a listen, and perhaps you'll get some ideas to deploy for your next session...! We also have a whole mess of links this time around. This month we've been talking about dark and horrific games. But, they're not always the easiest games to run, so, in an effort to help all of you learn how to run these games better (and ourselves too), we sat down with Kenneth Hite to pick his brain and experience on ways to run horror games, and to run horror games better. For those unfamiliar, Ken has been playing, running, and writing horror games for the last 40 years or so, and has writing credits on an astounding number of game books, including GURPS Horror (4th ed), Nights Black Agents, Vampire 5th Edition, and Fall of Delta Green. Ken also is the co-host of "Ken and Robin Talk about Stuff" a fabulous rpg (and related) podcast. Watch this ISO episode on YouTube Blake, Jeb, and guest Ken Hite talk about the search for Nazi Plunder - lost treasure and art following WWII. Thanks to Ken Hite for joining us on this episode. You can find a huge archive of Ken's excellent podcast (with Robin Laws) titled Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff. Highly recommended! Ken's also a prolific author and game designer and if you like this episode and weird war history, you might especially enjoy his Osprey (fiction) book on Nazi Occultism. Also, if you enjoy vampires and Jason Bourne-style spy action, you should check out Night's Black Agents. Discussed in this Episode: About this rocket Jeb was asking about: It appears to say ПО РEЙXCTAГУ "Po Ree-stah-gu" Also, it appears to be a BM-XY launch system (not sure what values go in X or Y). Apparently, like the Brits called the V weapons "buzz bombs" because of their peculiar sounds, the Germans called this Russian rig "Stalin's Organ" because of its sounds. Per Ken, it translates into either "On to the Reichstag!" or possibly "to the Reichstag" like a package address." Walter Horn - a "monuments man" Martin Bohrman - a Nazi. Hitler's secretary and confidant. Jeb, haunted by WORLD AT WAR series intro. Austria's Lake Toplitz (pronounced To-Plitz-Say) was a treasure dump - found in 1957 In Florence - Rudolpho Siviero continues the hunt... Rodolfo Siviero ( 1911 - 1983 ) Nimoy Fashion Alert Austrian fire-men (and treasure hunters) search a lake.
Craft Disservices makes its belated return in style as we reflect on Orson Welles's 1948 noir classic "The Lady From Shanghai"!Writer and game designer Robin D. Laws joins the show to talk about another near-masterpiece from the iconoclastic actor/director. Michael O'Hara thought he knew about trouble, but when he falls for the beautiful wife of a bitter, ruthless lawyer, he finds himself drawn into a game of revenge, murder, and tarrrrrget practice!Orson Welles burst onto the Hollywood scene in 1941 with his debut feature, "Citizen Kane", employing the techniques he honed in theater and radio to subvert the cinematic trends of the time. But more often than not, he found his creativity stymied by studio bosses who were unwilling to indulge his fancies and a viewing public who weren't ready to take the journey he was offering them. On this episode, we discuss the struggles Welles had with the studio in getting the picture made, his casting (and shearing) of his estranged wife Rita Hayworth, the questionable veracity of self-aggrandizing Hollywood tales, how Welles's techniques inspired later filmmakers, the milage of auteur theory in a commercial market, and the true ambitions of the film's many signature setpieces.Plus, we talk about the definition and origins of film noir, a movie about drunk people, Harry Cohn: Hollywood Super-Villain, sailing (unsteadily) with Errol Flynn, screwing over William Castle, picking your adaptation at random, "Latin crime jazz", the conscientiousness of Chinese opera performers, synonyms for "trashy", the Wong Kar Wai remake that never happened, Aaron capes for his boy Yorgos Lanthimos, Robin doubts the Brechtianism of Welles, and we debut the "I Have to Fight You" podcast! This is without a doubt the best murder for hire, put yourself on the witness stand, bad Irish accent, hall of mirrors shootout, scary aquarium, mariachi luau film ever made! The Lady From Shanghai ScoresRotten Tomatoes: 86%Metacritic: NAIMDB: 7.7/10Check out Robin's podcast, Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff!http://www.kenandrobintalkaboutstuff.comGet Robin's books on Amazon!Beating the Storyhttps://amzn.to/2oQwFhHHamlet's Hit Pointshttps://amzn.to/2oPbfBABuy The Lady From Shanghai on Blu-ray!https://amzn.to/2IpZRD1Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter or our Discord channel!http://www.facebook.com/craftdisserviceshttp://www.twitter.com/craftdisservicehttps://discord.gg/fv5RJuX

Like much of our content, it’s hard to believe. Unlike much of it, it’s true. Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff has reached its milestone 350th episode. Yes, we’ve been laying down the skinny on aliens, phantom cats, conspiracies and oh yes, the exciting world of tabletop roleplaying games for a whole seven years. Longtimers […]
Kenneth Hite kan høres i podcasten Ken and Robin Talk About Stuff.

The players are strutting and fretting and the stage is set for MURDER as we catch "The Conscience of the King"!Author and game designer Robin D. Laws joins the show this week as we investigate an episode of Star Trek: The Original Series that's a little bit noir, a little bit Shakespeare, and 100% SPACE MYSTERY! When Kirk meets an actor that he suspects is Kodos the Executioner, he invites the former governor and his troupe aboard. But when the bodies begin piling up like Act V of Hamlet, he'll have to confront his past connection to the massacre on Tarsus IV and an unexpected assassin! Our examination of low-rated but high-quality Trek episodes continues with this "talky" tribute to epic pathos and noirish fatalism, where the "bad guy" is sympathetic, the hero is devious, and the femme fatale is extra fatal. During the show, we talk about Trek's intersections with the Bard, how to light your ship for "noir", the police procedural roots of the show, finding emergent play in RPGs, Kirk getting a little "Bond", and the parallels between Shakespearean dialogue and technobabble!Plus, we discuss the lethality of Windex, having red wine with fish, the classic "half-a-fur-coat" look, the Satanic Panic of the 1980s, sexy diegetic cocktail themes, Star Trek: Discovery as a Belgian Sour, the return of the Myth of the Sexy Kirk, Last Unicorn Trek RPG, Aaron talks his dissolute actor past, and Robin plants a maple leaf flag in William Shakespeare! We're starting to see a thaw at the Open Metalcast headquarters and with it is the realization that maybe we'll make it through this winter after all. Fortunately the Internet connection has stayed strong (knock on fake-wood) so we've been able to scurry through the net to find the finest in Creative Commons Metal to help keep your ears nice and toasty warm. Joining us this episode are trakcs from Trocotombix, We Are Idols, Recursion, Skein, Larion, Oblivion's Garden, Oblivion, Cara Neir, Poison (thankfully not the hair-metal band) and a return by Captain Three Leg. Ten tracks of metal waiting for you to download and headbang (or more likely shovel) to while we wait patiently for spring to arrive.
