Roddy Bottum, the seasoned Faith No More co-founder and keyboardist, made waves in the early '90s by publicly coming out, which at the time defied norms in the rock scene. In 2012, he shared his experience with Out Magazine, highlighting the excitement and danger of being openly gay at the time. Now, collaborating with boyfriend Joey Holman, Roddy launched MAN ON MAN during COVID isolation, with the aim of staying creatively active. Their debut song, Daddy, challenges gay stereotypes, celebrating love in isolation all the while presenting a raw and unpolished facet of queer community. This past summer they released a new album Provincetown and the duo also concluded a European tour in early December.  Finally, wishing you all a holiday season filled with warmth and joy. Your support and enthusiasm is the heartbeat of Lydian Spin and has and continues to be a great gift!

Roddy Bottum and Joey Holman are a couple of regular guys with regular dad bods. And they're a couple. As Man on Man, they make music that tackles themes of love, intimacy, sex, queer culture and quirks. But above all, they make music that rocks, which has been an anomaly in mainstream queer culture since, well, always. Their second album, “Provincetown,” came out last week. Like their self-titled 2021 debut, the duo deploys humor, heavy riffs and introspection on songs with titles like "Showgirls," "Piggy" and "Gloryhole."   Brooklyn news and views you can use: bkmag.com Email: hello@bkmag.com Follow along on Facebook: Brooklyn Magazine Twitter: @brooklynmag Instagram: @brooklynmagazine Follow Brian Braiker on Twitter: @slarkpope

The Real Thing Review by Ned Raggett [-] Starting with the careening "From Out of Nowhere" driven by Roddy Bottum's doomy, energetic keyboards, Faith No More rebounded excellently on The Real Thing after Chuck Mosley's was fired. Given that the band had nearly finished recording the music and Mike Patton was a last minute recruit, he adjusts to the proceedings well. His insane, wide-ranging musical interests would have to wait for the next album for their proper integration, but the band already showed enough of that to make it an inspired combination. Bottum, in particular, remains the wild card, coloring Jim Martin's nuclear-strength riffs and the Bill Gould/Mike Bordin rhythm slams with everything from quirky hooks to pristine synth sheen. It's not quite early Brian Eno-joins-Led Zeppelin-and-Funkadelic, but it's closer than one might think, based on the nutty lounge vibes of "Edge of the World" and the Arabic melodies and feedback of "Woodpeckers from Mars." "Falling to Pieces," a fractured anthem with a delicious delivery from Patton, should have been a bigger single that it was, while "Surprise! You're Dead!" and the title track stuff riffs down the listener's throat. The best-known song remains the appropriately titled "Epic," which lives up to its name, from the bombastic opening to the concluding piano and the crunching, stomping funk metal in between. The inclusion of a cover of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" amusingly backfired on the band -- at the time, Sabbath's hipness level was nonexistent, making it a great screw-you to the supposed cutting-edge types. However, all the metalheads took the song to heart so much that, as a result, the quintet dropped it from their sets to play "Easy" by the Commodores instead! --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/comics-in-motion-podcast/message

MAN ON MAN - "It's So Fun (To Be Gay)" from the 2021 album MAN ON MAN on Polyvinyl. While others were baking banana bread or binging shows on Netflix, Faith No More keyboardist Roddy Bottum and his boyfriend Joey Holman started the music project Man on Man during the pandemic.  “Roddy was just like, ‘We're both musicians, let's just do it to pass time.' At first, we were just going to share with our friends,” Holman toldRolling Stone, but the online response to their debut single, "Daddy", was so enthusiastic. “They were like, ‘Thank you, I see myself in this. This is me.' Which is so cool! People have never seen two gay guys who are a couple making the kind of music we're making, writing about what we're writing about, displaying it in the way we're displaying it.” Today's Song of the Day is a charming pop tune with a heartwarming accompanying video. "We wanted 'It's So Fun (To Be Gay)' to feel organic and warm with a strong, universal message," the band shared via a press statement. "For the video we aimed to focus on our community. Getting through the hardships of the past year, we leaned heavily on what we mean to each other in terms of support and understanding. We were in the middle of launching our Chosen Family project and had just finished linking people up for our penpal program and sourcing art for our quarterly zine. We thought the best way to exhibit the joy in the song would be to have a video full of our chosen family — friends, peers, and heros. So, we asked friends to share their love and lives and these queer testimonials are what make up the bulk of the video. Our togetherness and bond is key to moving forward in these times especially and we aimed to capture that bond and essence, particularly with Gay Pride 2021 on the horizon. It felt fitting to donate the launch-day's sales to Born Perfect, which is a non-profit whose mission is to end conversion therapy." We had the pleasure of interviewing Man on Man over Zoom video! Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Teen, Nastie Band, CRICKETS) and his boyfriend Joey Holman (Holman, Cool Hand Luke) built a record in quarantine around the celebration of gay love. MAN ON MAN stare down homophobia, ageism, and xenophobia and bite back with a display of queer tenderness and triumph. What started as an outlet for expression at the onset of COVID-19, MAN ON MAN quickly realized, after the release of their first single and video for their song Daddy, they were doing more than making songs in quarantine - they were speaking for people who didn’t feel like they had a place in the queer scene. MAN ON MAN are an invitation for true expression and representation.By design, the music is as heavy as it is soft. Bottum and Holman’s fondness for fuzzy guitars and punchy synths matches the same velocity as their appetite for acoustic guitars and upright pianos. The vocals reach gospel heights while allowing space for rawness, loudness, and vulnerability. The instrument lineup was forced simplicity: two guitars, the upright piano that Bottum grew up playing, a keyboard, and a microphone. MAN ON MAN prove you can do a lot with very little, only getting help with a couple of bass tracks remotely from their friend Joey Howard (Paramore, Hayley Williams) and recording their music videos on an iPhone.Their new release, Baby, You’re My Everything, is a queer hymn of devotion, underscoring the very best parts of being with a lover in quarantine. The track was amongst the first songs written as a duo, and it serves a soft landing thrown from the whirring chaos of a new life sheltering in place. The video is a wander into the baptism of rainbowed fellowship.MAN ON MAN remove the gatekeepers of straight and LGBTQIA+ establishments and create music and visuals that celebrate broadening the identity of DIY scrappiness.“The quarantine and the isolation of the new world isn’t a time for sitting still. As a pushback to the virus it’s our job to create and to force ourselves to push boundaries. MAN ON MAN has been an exercise in liberating the queer voices in ourselves and expressing the notions of love, loneliness and the things we hold close,” Bottum says.“The project of MAN ON MAN is creating space for people who don’t live within platitudes and monoliths - everyone is actually welcome to express themselves how they want. As artists, we have varied interest, and the part of our project I’m most excited about is how every song is its own entity, leaving room for a wide range of emotions.” Holman says.We want to hear from you! There’s been an argument. Actually, that’s probably too strong a word. Some minor disagreement. The entire band is laughing about it by the time I arrive at the Brooklyn apartment. Like everything else they do, the conversation over some synth patch is downright familial. The quartet has been making music together for so long, they’re practically siblings, with all of the love and squabbles that brings. Ever since their debut record hit the since in 1996, Imperial Teen has been a staple of alternative and indie rock. Following the release of their sixth album, Now We Are Timeless, the full band (Roddy Bottum, Lynn Truell, Will Schwartz and Jone Stebbins) sat down to discuss nearly a quarter century of Imperial Teen.

Roddy talk starts at 50:00. Keyboards are an intrinsic element in Faith No More's signature sound. Roddy Bottum's contribution to FNM throughout the catalogue has been undeniable. We take a look through their discography and Roddy's projects outside the band. This was certainly the most difficult episode we've attempted so far, we hope we've tackled it faithfully. Recorded 28th April 1990, Faith No More were deep into tour commitments to promote The Real Thing, but with dates rolling into the following year, "You Fat Bastards" was released that August to satisfy the increasing demand for FNM material. Their only official live release, You Fat Bastards immortalised an exciting era for the band. The band's competency as musicians is on full display, Jim Martin is still on guitar and Mike Patton snaps his fingers in a unique way. All that, and more in this episode of Tangent Croissant.

Ep. 52 - Faith No More keyboardist and Imperial Teen lead singer Roddy Bottum stops by Bronson Island to talk food with Chuck and Zach. He gives us his strategy for attacking the Original Farmer's Market in Los Angeles, clues Zach in to the all you can eat pavillion at Dodgers' stadium, and tells us why sushi chefs don't like him. He also says Mike Patton will eat anything and his Imperial Teen bandmate Lynn will believe anything.
