We’re back! And we have someone very special. You might know him from Imperial Teen or Faith No More and he’s been making music during quarantine! Roddy Bottum joins us to tell us all about the new project called Man on Man with his partner Joey Holman and we find out all about the making of their self titled album available May 12th. Roddy explains how he and Joey became “icons of body positivity” with the release of the video for their new song Daddy. There are a ton of super gay songs including one about The Vale of Cashmere in Prospect Park. Along with their album they are launching a project called Chosen Family to create a real world connection with friends and fans and family. You can check out their website ManonManMusic.com and check out the album and join the Chosen Family (including the optional pen pal program) to connect with the music and the love. Then we talk about Roddy’s time recording and touring with Faith No More and the pandemic-delayed reunion tour. We try to make a determination about the term “new metal” and ask the important questions such as “is Korn is retro now?” Heklina asks him all about opening up for Guns n’ Roses and the debauchery (and mysticism?) on the Use Your Illusions Tour. Marc insists on finding out more about Roddy writing Sasquatch, The Opera and his love for monsters with hearts of gold. We do a quick round of “Who Do You Prefer?” musical edition and we have so much fun! Join us for another episode of Drag Time with Heklina with Roddy Bottum.

Joey Holman and Roddy Bottum are  Man on Man.  They've spent most of the pandemic traveling from New York to LA, caring for their mothers and writing their first musical collaboration.  But Man on Man is more than music, it has a strong visual aspect that expresses body positivity that has resonated with the queer community.  There is also a communal component called Chosen Family,  which serves as a platform for community support, activism and it aims to bring people together through art and real human engagement.  In this episode Joe, Joey and Roddy talk about the good and bad habits they've developed over the last year,  the hard work and responsibility the Man on Man record has brought to their lives and what their plans are in the near future.  We hear a couple tunes from the new record and Joey and Roddy tell us what they've been listening to.  Enjoy. Episode sponsored by Izotope, Izotope.comMusic by Man on Man and Joe Plummer

Jone Stebbins was guitarist and a founding member of all-girl early 80's hardcore punk pioneers, Reno, NV.'s The Wrecks. She and bassist Bessie Oakley also produced the beloved and influential Paranoia fanzine in that era. Since the 1990's she has been making music with Wrecks drummer Lynn Perko-Truell as bassist of Bay Area super-group Imperial Teen. Jason and Jone became friends in 1983 as penpals, they met later that year when she and Bessie spent a number of months in Los Angeles running Shawn Stern's BYO record label. The conversation tracks her path as a self-proclaimed seeker of all things weird. We follow along from her early teen discovery in the late 70's of ‘midnight movie' screenings like Rocky Horror Picture Show to her immersion in the DIY participation culture of early- 80's hardcore punk, the formation of The Wrecks and Paranoia, her move to the Bay Area in the late 80's and her life in music and culture from that era through to today. It's a fun and inspiring conversation. Thank you so much for listening. By 1998 the grunge bubble had burst even for the second wave, as sunnier, more eclectic alternative rock fought for radio airwave space against the upstart nu-metal bands and a resurgence of manufactured pop. One of the biggest hits was thanks to the Austin, Texas trio Fastball, whose sophomore album All The Pain Money Can Buy produced the cinematic single "The Way," which along with bands like Harvey Danger, The New Radicals, Imperial Teen, and others provided a momentary bubble of pop uncertainty. We had the pleasure of interviewing Man on Man over Zoom video! Roddy Bottum (Faith No More, Imperial Teen, Nastie Band, CRICKETS) and his boyfriend Joey Holman (Holman, Cool Hand Luke) built a record in quarantine around the celebration of gay love. MAN ON MAN stare down homophobia, ageism, and xenophobia and bite back with a display of queer tenderness and triumph. What started as an outlet for expression at the onset of COVID-19, MAN ON MAN quickly realized, after the release of their first single and video for their song Daddy, they were doing more than making songs in quarantine - they were speaking for people who didn’t feel like they had a place in the queer scene. MAN ON MAN are an invitation for true expression and representation.By design, the music is as heavy as it is soft. Bottum and Holman’s fondness for fuzzy guitars and punchy synths matches the same velocity as their appetite for acoustic guitars and upright pianos. The vocals reach gospel heights while allowing space for rawness, loudness, and vulnerability. The instrument lineup was forced simplicity: two guitars, the upright piano that Bottum grew up playing, a keyboard, and a microphone. MAN ON MAN prove you can do a lot with very little, only getting help with a couple of bass tracks remotely from their friend Joey Howard (Paramore, Hayley Williams) and recording their music videos on an iPhone.Their new release, Baby, You’re My Everything, is a queer hymn of devotion, underscoring the very best parts of being with a lover in quarantine. The track was amongst the first songs written as a duo, and it serves a soft landing thrown from the whirring chaos of a new life sheltering in place. The video is a wander into the baptism of rainbowed fellowship.MAN ON MAN remove the gatekeepers of straight and LGBTQIA+ establishments and create music and visuals that celebrate broadening the identity of DIY scrappiness.“The quarantine and the isolation of the new world isn’t a time for sitting still. As a pushback to the virus it’s our job to create and to force ourselves to push boundaries. MAN ON MAN has been an exercise in liberating the queer voices in ourselves and expressing the notions of love, loneliness and the things we hold close,” Bottum says.“The project of MAN ON MAN is creating space for people who don’t live within platitudes and monoliths - everyone is actually welcome to express themselves how they want. As artists, we have varied interest, and the part of our project I’m most excited about is how every song is its own entity, leaving room for a wide range of emotions.” Holman says.We want to hear from you! There’s been an argument. Actually, that’s probably too strong a word. Some minor disagreement. The entire band is laughing about it by the time I arrive at the Brooklyn apartment. Like everything else they do, the conversation over some synth patch is downright familial. The quartet has been making music together for so long, they’re practically siblings, with all of the love and squabbles that brings. Ever since their debut record hit the since in 1996, Imperial Teen has been a staple of alternative and indie rock. Following the release of their sixth album, Now We Are Timeless, the full band (Roddy Bottum, Lynn Truell, Will Schwartz and Jone Stebbins) sat down to discuss nearly a quarter century of Imperial Teen.

Top story this week has to be the blackout that hit west Manhattan. Coming 42 years to the day after the 1977 blackout from last week's show, this year's power outage was much less dramatic and lasted only a few hours. ConEd CEO John McAvoy described the failure of both the primary and backup protection systems at a power substation at 64th Street and West End Avenue, leading to power outages once the system was interrupted by a subsequent substation at 49th Street. Although the blackout wasn't caused by a spike in electricity usage, the heat is still on in the city, with daily high temps in the 90s. In response, cooling centers have been opened across the city in senior centers, public housing, and public libraries. On July 18th, Mayor de Blasio signed a local state of emergency that calls on city government buildings and all office buildings over 100 feet tall to conserve energy and set their thermostats no lower than 78°. Temperatures are set to rise and humidity will increase, leading to heat indexes over 100° before rain arrives on July 22nd. You can do your part by turning off your air conditioner when leaving your home and using public transportation instead of driving, which will keep the air quality clear during the heat wave. If you'll be opening your windows to get some ventilation, you can install safety devices called vent locks for sash windows or metal clips for sliding windows that make sure windows can't be forced all the way open from the outside. 5 years ago on July 17, 2014 — Eric Garner dies after being put in a chokehold by NYPD officers 12 years ago on July 18, 2007 — A steam pipe explodes near Grand Central, sending debris flying and disrupting Midtown during evening rush hour 1 year ago on July 19, 2018 — A steam pipe explodes near the Flatiron Building, causing a large crater outside 141 Fifth Avenue Be aware of your surroundings during this time of year, as two of city's steam explosions have happened during just this week in history.
