Innovation Inside LaunchStreet: Leading Innovators | Business Growth | Improve Your Innovation Game

We’ve all heard different things being accused of being the enemy of innovation — perfection, consensus, analysis-paralysis, etc. However, one big enemy of innovation that often gets overlooked and forgotten is indifference. We are living in times when there is a lot of indifference in the marketplace and the world. Suboptimal work environments, and uncertain global climate, being overstimulated because of the constant updates from the media all contribute to pushing us toward indifference. Unfortunately, when people are in the zone of indifference, they are showing up and checking off the boxes, but they are not bringing their best. They are not innovating. Personally, I would rather have a team that is energized, excited, angry, or upset than indifferent — because they have to care enough to feel any of those emotions. So how can we get our teams out of this state of indifference and push them towards innovation? I share three of my most powerful strategies (plus a bonus!) to move people from indifferent to engaged: 1) Acknowledge their impact, 2) Tap the rewards center of your people, 3) Be the coach, not the manager, Bonus) Don’t solve their problems for them.   If you are ready to: get buy-in from key decision-makers on your next big idea be a high-impact, high-value member that ignites change foster a culture of innovation where everyone on your team is bringing innovative ideas that tackle challenges and seize opportunities… Join us on LaunchStreet — gotolaunchstreet.com   Mentioned in This Episode: Innovation Quotient Edge Assessment Everyday Innovators Tribe Inside LaunchStreet Podcast Episode 1813: Business Insights through Music with Roger Nierenberg

“Being stuck is an important part of the creative process – every great creative advance has been preceded by being stuck. And it’s staying with that, and then suddenly you see it differently. You discover that… there are different forces at play here than what I thought, and there are different barriers, and some of the barriers that I was fighting against, they don’t even exist! They’re just a construct.” Roger Nierenberg is a conductor who has enjoyed long tenures as Music Director of both The Jacksonville Symphony (Florida) and the Stamford Symphony (Connecticut). His conducting work has brought him to the podium of The London Philharmonic, The Residentie Orkest, The New Zealand Symphony, The National Symphony, and the symphony orchestras of cities across the US, and he has collaborated with musicians from more than one hundred orchestras around the world. Roger is also the creator of The Music Paradigm, an interactive learning experience that brings teams into the orchestra rehearsal process to discover critical lessons about leadership and teamwork. Participants are seated directly amongst the orchestra musicians where they gain fresh understandings about the opportunities and challenges faced by their own organization. Over the past twenty years, Nierenberg has presented to hundreds of different organizations, from civic groups to Fortune 500 companies, in two dozen different countries. The lessons and experience of The Music Paradigm are shared in a narrative account through the book, Maestro: A Surprising Story about Leading By Listening. Today our expert guest is Conductor Roger Nierenberg, creator of The Music Paradigm. He has conducted for the London Philharmonic, The New Zealand Symphony, and the National Symphony, among countless others, and performed over 100 orchestras around the globe.   Roger developed the Music Paradigm after studying why American audiences weren't receptive to classical music, and discovering that his experiments had applications for business. Over the years, Roger has presented to hundreds of organizations, from civic groups to Fortune 500 companies in over two dozen countries.   The Music Paradigm is a powerful learning experience that uses symphonic music to illustrate compelling insights about people at work. Participants are seated directly amongst the orchestra musicians where they gain fresh understandings about the opportunities and challenges faced by their own organizations.   At the age of 9, Roger heard something in the music and he knew that was what he wanted to devote his life to. He wanted to write music, so he studied composition in high school and college, but when it came time to pursue a career he realized it was conducting that he enjoyed the most.   At some point in the 90's, Roger began to wonder why the American audience was so unsupportive of classical music. He studied the block that people have that keeps people from experiencing and being enriched by the music. So he started doing experiments, and they were incredibly successful. He realized this was something that could be very powerful for businesses as well.   Music unfolds very fast. In a minute of music, a lot happens, whereas in life not much happens. Because it is so compact, it is easier to connect the dots. The behaviors with the orchestra leads to results almost immediately.   Being put inside an orchestra makes them vulnerable from the very beginning, but in a good way. The environment is friendly and inviting, but by not being familiar with the setting, they are open to change and experience.   The goal of the Music Paradigm is to leave people feeling: Inspired about the possibilities they could accomplish More conscious about their own power to affect results That they have more tools for getting things done and working with other people   The way that orchestras interact to create moving music acts as a lens to view the behaviors of each person within an organization, and to instantly see the effects of those behaviors. And when people have this level of awareness, creating positive change is much simpler.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway   “Within what lies in front of us, on our desk, in the people we're surrounded with in our lives, there lies a potential which we cannot see. Leaders Of Transformation | Leadership Development | Conscious Business | Global Transformation

Maestro Roger Nierenberg is an orchestral conductor, leadership consultant, and founder of The Music Paradigm. He made his New York conducting debut at Avery Fisher with the Pro Arte Chorale and Orchestra. He was soon invited to conduct operas in two successive seasons at the Mostly Mozart Festival at New York’s Lincoln Center, followed by long, successful tenures as Music Director of both the Stamford Symphony in Connecticut and the Jacksonville Symphony in Florida. Guest conducting invitations came from the National Symphony, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, the Detroit Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, the Indianapolis Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, and many other great American orchestras. Abroad Roger has recorded with the London Philharmonic and conducted at both the Prague Spring Festival and the Beijing Festival. He has collaborated with many of the most renowned solo artists and composers of our time. During his tenure with the Jacksonville Symphony, the seeds were planted that would lead Maestro Nierenberg to a startling departure from the conventional, through the unparalleled creation of The Music Paradigm. Through his experiences engaging with community businesses and civic leaders, he became curious about the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations in times of rapid change. He quickly realized how crucial issues of organizational development could be powerfully brought to life within an orchestra. Thus was born The Music Paradigm, which has taken Mr. Nierenberg to the podium of over ninety different orchestras, before hundreds of different organizations in twenty-three different countries. Many of the lessons learned on this journey are presented in his book Maestro: A Surprising Story About Leading by Listening which was honored in 2009 as the Best Leadership Book from 800-CEO-READ. In today’s conversation, Maestro Roger Nierenberg, guides us on a tour of the Music Paradigm; how he is able to reveal valuable insights to business leaders through music. It’s a different kind of learning that is not only highly effective, but also almost instantaneous, such that participants are able to recognize distinctions in leadership and self-awareness within minutes. He is passionate about helping leaders see the impact they have on people without judgment or being singled out. The music paradigm is truly a revolutionary way to empower leaders and their teams to greatness. Key Takeaways Music converts behavior into results almost instantaneously. So you can try on one behavior and immediately you hear the result. As a leader, if you feel like your job is to fix things when they go wrong or solve problems when they come up, you will never draw out the best in your people. Only a leader that sees what the potential could be and drives the organization towards that success will bring that about. Really deep insights about organizational leadership in a way transcend the ability to ‘talk’ about it. Even ‘real life’ unfolds too slowly, whereas music allows one to experience it almost instantaneously. The more the musicians in the orchestra gain insights about themselves, the better they play. The business leaders get to see it first hand and then relate it to their own organization. It’s not that people in organizations don’t want to change; they can’t visualize it or imagine what that is like. Similarly, often the state that we’re trying to move to, we just can’t imagine it yet. Skepticism is often unconscious – that you could actually create something that you’ve never experienced or visualized before. Business organizations don’t routinely practice the way athletes or musicians do. Leadership is hard to practice and therefore hard to learn as a skill. So leaders are often completely unaware of the effect they’re having on their people. Through the metaphor of music, Maestro Nierenberg helps organizations “see, feel and think” about themselves with fresh eyes. Quite amazing. Very anthropological, which as you know, is right up our alley! Wait til you hear—and I mean hear—this pioneering musical genius.  A Unique Learning Experience for Any Type of Organization  What Roger Nierenberg and I discuss in this podcast is the way in which music, and the performance of music, can often be seen as a foreign culture but can also be a powerful metaphor for the organizations in which we work, or work with. As Roger describes his experiences conducting orchestras all over the world, he shares with us how during each performance, the musicians are listening, understanding, sharing, visualizing and changing their performances, not so much in response to him but to each other. Through Roger's descriptions, we too can see our own methods of interacting with others more clearly by watching performers collaborate in a musical experience. It isn’t because they are just talented performers. Rather, they have learned how to work together to bring out each one's skills and create an amazing performance. Might this apply to your organization? The Music Paradigm Through Roger's experiences engaging with community businesses and civic leaders, he became curious about the challenges and opportunities faced by organizations in times of rapid change. What lessons can we learn from a symphony orchestra? More importantly, what can a symphony conductor teach us about teamwork and leadership? Our special guest shares how we can enhance and develop our leadership skills by learning to lead with deeper listening skills.   Roger Nierenberg is a Symphony Conductor that has enjoyed long tenures as Music Director of both The Jacksonville Symphony and the Stamford Symphony. Roger is also the author of Maestro, which contains surprising messages about business leadership.   What does a symphony conductor do? A conductor is in charge of making the whole music piece, all the little different parts, coherent. They are in charge of taking big messages and simplifying them, and they help lay out the vision of the music so that the musicians can buy into it and follow it. All of this is translated by the simple movements of the baton.   In Roger’s process, first, he sets the tone for his business students so that they understand how an orchestra works. They come into a room where they sit right where the action is, inside the symphony orchestra, and find themselves side-by-side with the musicians.   Without any words spoken, the music begins and the students watch as Roger conducts. After the show, Roger explains that the orchestra is a metaphor for a well-run, successful organization. The funny thing is, Roger had only met with the orchestra an hour prior and they, too, had no idea what Roger was going to ask them to do until the baton was moving.   So many people are not musicians, so by structuring it in this way, students are able to fully comprehend and experience what it looks like to work together unscripted, in a flow, without trying to explain or converse. You are only using the power of observation and your listening skills to understand what it means to really work in sync.   Interview Links: Musicparadigm.com   Resources: Scaling Up for Business Growth Workshops: Take the first step to mastering the Rockefeller Habits by attending one of our workshops. Most high level business people are very guarded and super planned. That’s one of the reasons why a surprising, creative and immersive experience can be transformative not only for us regular folk- but for the leaders of Fortune 100 companies and above. Roger Nierenberg took his love for classical music, and his desire to make it more widely listened to and created an incredible leadership transformation experience for leaders around the world. We also discuss the benefits of the Japanese Kaizen system for business systems and how to scale your small business from stage 2 to 3.   Teaser: https://www.estierand.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Roger-Nierenberg-Teaser-V2.mp4 (https://www.estierand.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/Roger-Nierenberg-Teaser-V2.mp4)   My Guest: Roger Nierenberg Roger Nierenberg is an orchestral conductor, leadership consultant and founder of The Music Paradigm, an engaging and unforgettable learning experience for any organization. Members of the organization are participants as well as audience members, and are seated within a live professional orchestra. The participant’s attention is drawn to fascinating and unexpected organizational dynamics within the orchestra, and they realize that The Music Paradigm is much more than a riveting demonstration.   Pivotal Moments: As an orchestral conductor, was dismayed at the societal drift away from classical music and wanted to attract more people to its beauty. Realized that organizational leaders were the best agents to introduce others to classical music as they have power, money and influence on their teams. Simultaneously developed a method that used music as a metaphor to teach and influence people in a meaningful and non-threatening way. Was engaged by a CEO to present his leadership transformation technique by conducting a live orchestra at a business meeting. Grew his client base by networking with music directors who led him to business consultants. Within a year of his first performance, was delivering sessions to Fortune 100 companies. Was so successful that one participant described the experience as the outstanding moment of his career.   The Advice: When trying to drive organizational change, it can be difficult as most people don't enjoy being told how to improve and so they naturally resist these messages. Delivering the criticism in a creative way that is not personal allows the message to penetrate. People like to be in control of the situation which is why so many business meetings are scripted beforehand. Working spontaneously and removing the feeling of security and control puts people in a slightly vulnerable position where they are more open to absorbing important messages. When someone tells you an idea, you are borrowing it; when you figure it out yourself, you own it. Kaizen, a Japanese business management approach, involves writing down every step of organizational process. Then, start with the last step and work backwards to figure out the fastest and most efficient route to this end result.   The Struggle: Roger struggles with the opportunity that his performances present. He has a strong influence on people during his performances, but then he leaves and is not there to help people act on their momentary inspiration. How can he remain involved to bring the inspiration he gives to action? Furthermore, Roger wants to measure how much influence he is having on others so that he is aware of whether he is achieving his goals.   The Breakthrough: Roger needs to bring his business to the next level. There are three stages in small business development: Stage 1: Developing and implementing a solid business model. Stage 2: Stabilizing core competencies and making sure that the business is working well. Stage 3: Scaling the business, finding more and different people and services. Roger is currently at Stage 2, moving up to Stage 3. His business is working well,
