“It's no longer sufficient to think about sustainability through the climate lens. The challenge and the exciting thing now is really grappling with the interconnectedness of the biodiversity crisis and the opportunity and necessity of the circular economy.”In this episode I interview Sam Gardner, Head of Climate Change & Sustainability with Scottish Power, and formerly Head of Policy at WWF Scotland. In both these roles Sam has been closely involved in the climate and sustainability agenda in Scotland. In the conversation Sam talks about:The transformation of Scottish Power from oil and gas to entirely renewable energy sources. The importance of continuous engagement with staff and stakeholders, ensuring everyone in the organisation connects their work to climate goals. The need for a fair transition to net zero, and to deliver on biodiversity and the circular economy.Listen for great insights into the challenges of accelerating the pace of change while bringing colleagues with you, maintaining public support and ensuring a just a transition. Sam also talks about how he has kept motivated over many years of working on sustainability, offering useful ideas we can all apply ourselves and with our colleagues. You'll find the links mentioned in this episode in the companion blog post here: https://realise.earth/grappling-with-climate-biodiversity-circular-economy-and-a-just-transition/

R versus SAS - which is a better tool? Today, we talk about a controversial topic. If you go online and look into social media, you'll find a lot of data scientists that talk about R versus Python. In medical and clinical research, it's more about R versus SAS. For this discussion, we have Sam Gardner and Thomas Neitmann representing SAS and R, respectively.
Sam Gardner is one of the most inspirational women I know, she is currently being a gestational carrier for her friends, Francis and Stuart who were unable to carry their own children as two males.I ask her about how she prepares mentally for this, what her vision is for that moment and how she grew the strength to give two people the greatest gift of their lives.Follow her at:@samgards18Stuart & Francis YouTube ChannelIf you loved today's episode, I would love to see your thoughts on instagram @megmcleanuk& @shecanpodLoads of Love xx

“If we can remove the can’t and put the can in to give them a focal point, and a light at the end of the tunnel to train for, I think we are going to see improvements, not just in return to play, but how they return to play.” This My Thoughts Monday is brought to you by Vald Performance, the team behind the NordBord, ForceDecks, the GroinBar and HumanTrak. With all their products providing evidence-based solutions to performance professionals so they can get the right information, for the right decision, at the right time. Make sure to go check out all their great products at: www.valdperformance.com A huge take home from this summers edition of The Seminar for me was the idea of talking about what the athlete can do, as opposed to what they can’t do that Sam Gardner referenced in how they program for their athletes. This has changed my outlook on our “retrun to play” programming from the outset of an injury. We can always find something the athlete CAN do, and something they CAN work on to get better. That doesn’t me that we should just throw something hard at them to “make them work”, but can be something that can be focused on a specific aspect of their training that they can improve upon to increase their abilities in other areas of performance. Sam’s last slide is one that was tweeted out and put all over instagram, and it something to the point of: some people would love to have your bad days. This is something that is all to true, and not just in the comparison to the athletes he gets to work with and able bodied people. This includes how our athletes may be seeing the world and should make you think about how you listen and talk with them. Victim to victory. In 2005, Sam Gardner was in college and training for a half marathon. During a run while home for Thanksgiving the unthinkable happened. Sam was abducted, attacked, and raped. She was held in the woods near her home for several hours until her attacker eventually let her go. However, her story is one of hope and triumph. After years of physical, mental, and emotional recovery, Sam has transitioned from victim to victor. The moment that best represents that growth was when she won the 2015 Rock n’ Roll Half Marathon in New Orleans. It was an athletic accomplishment but, even more so, a spiritual achievement. It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. For Sam Gardner, running has been a common theme for some of the best, and worst, moments of her life. From being kidnapped and raped while on a run to winning a Rock and Roll marathon as a total surprise, the woman that Sam is today has been shaped, in large part, by the miles she has logged over the past 12+ years. http://DizRuns.com/530 Are you ready to take your running to the next level by working with a coach?
