This week Ryan, Erikka and Mat discuss everything from SctoWind troubles to the investment needed in the UK's energy transition, can you spot the common theme? Money! Ryan has been looking into the market speculation that Shell is looking to sell up its stake in the two ScotWind leases it secured in 2022. The firm and its partner Scottish Power forked out £154,400,000 for the two floating wind sites that are set to produce a combined 5GW of power during Crown Estate Scotland's leasing round.  CCS investment is a "risk worth taking", said the National Audit Office. Mat has been diving through some of the reports that got held up with this summer's general election. The NAO explained that warned slow progress on the first phase of ‘Track-1' projects means the government will struggle to achieve its 2030 CCUS ambitions. Finally, Erikka looks at the UK's Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme and how it might change under the Labour Government. She is also speculating on what assets GB Energy may be looking to take over, but for that to happen Labour has to "get their finger out" as she said.   About Energy Voice Energy Voice investigates and reports on what matters in global energy, helping sector leaders understand the geopolitical and economic factors underpinning current events, and giving them a view on what's coming over the horizon. In today's podcast we talk about the power of professional engineering and explore why a largely unseen and unsung profession increasingly has the power to change all our lives. If you think about the major issues and challenges facing the whole of society today, they all seem to come back to infrastructure and engineering. While the headlines may be being grabbed by pre-Election party politics, it is the need to tackle climate change and meet our net zero targets, the cost of energy, the challenge of mobility and public transport, that really stand in the way of our future well being. And the list goes on.  The health and well-being implications of water and air pollution, the demand for decent affordable housing, the need to rebuild the nation's biodiversity. All are key issues that simply will not be solved without the input from and, critically, the leadership by professional engineers. Yet as we see right now as the General Election moves into full swing, when it comes to discussing the big issues facing the UK - and the world for that matter - those professional engineers are largely in the shadows. Working hard and brimming with solutions but nevertheless resigned to taking instruction rather than leading. To discuss whether this is fair - or even whether it matters, my guest today is Sir Jim McDonald, President of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the fellowship organisation dedicated to and focused on championing excellence in all fields of engineering. As one of the UK's most accomplished engineers, Sir Jim co-chairs the Scottish Government's Energy Advisory Board with the First Minister, is Chair of the Independent Glasgow Economic Leadership Board and holds senior business appointments with the Weir Group, Scottish Power, the UK Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, and the National Physical Laboratory. So in short, Sir Jim is an authority on professional engineering and its power to make change – particularly when it comes to energy transition.ResourcesRoyal Academy of Engineering websiteThe Queen Elizabeth Prize for EngineeringScottish Government's Energy Advisory BoardUK Offshore Renewable Energy CatapultNational Physical LaboratoryUniversity of Strathclyde

Expanding our global electricity networks is the key to unlocking a renewable future. In the US alone, the electric grid will need to expand by at least 60% by 2030 to ensure renewable energy can make its way into our homes and businesses, and the UK's networks are also in dire need of regeneration. To implement such a project will require seismic policy change, innovative thinking and massive investment. It's an essential part of the energy transition. There are big questions and issues to discuss: how will we fund improved networks? How will the private and public sectors work together to facilitate these changes? How can we change regulations and reduce bureaucracy to increase the speed at which renewable energy sources can be connected to the grid? In this episode our host, journalist Kamal Ahmed, is joined by three brilliant guests, including Keith Anderson, CEO of Scottish Power, to give us an insight into the state of networks in the UK, US and Europe, the difficulties we currently face in improving them, and the potential solutions that could be put in place to reduce global carbon emissions whilst still meeting all of society's energy needs. Outgoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson visited Ukraine yesterday in what will be one of his last official engagements in office. He called upon the UK and the rest of Europe to endure the current energy emergency to defeat Russian leader Vladimir Putin, who is using his country's gas reserves as a weapon of war. The man who is tipped to be the new Chancellor of the Exchequer should Liz Truss win the Conservative Party leadership contest, current Business Secretary Kwasi Karteng, has been holding talks with energy sector bosses to find a solution to the rising cost of energy, in particular the wholesale price of gas. One solution that has been suggested has been a freeze being placed on the energy cap for two years. The plan which has been put forward by the CEO of Scottish Power would cost up to £100 billion over the twenty-four-month period. The plan involves government guarantees for loans that would enable energy companies to borrow from commercial lenders at competitive rates to buy gas from suppliers at the historically inflated cost without having to pass on the cost to consumers. The so-called deficit fund would help both the cost-of-living crisis and the continued rise in inflation that was tipped to reach 18% earlier this week.

An employment tribunal rules that a man suffering from long covid is protected by the Equality Act. It means employers have to make "reasonable adjustments" in the workplace to help sufferers and could have far reaching legal implications for the estimated two million people thought to be living with long covid. We look into a listener's question about only paying for the energy she actually uses - instead of relying to estimated average payments across the year. What’s it all about? Green Hydrogen! I’ve been aware of Graham and the work of ITM for some time, since meeting their Germany team at Power to X event in Dusseldorf, and seeing the scale of their recently expanded manufacturing capacity, I thought it would be a great time to have CEO Dr Graham Cooley on the podcast. Hydrogen is still in some ways contentious, but as I’ve said many times, it’s about the right tech solving the right problem. There is much to be done to replace grey/dirty hydrogen with green hydrogen, and it was fascinating to hear Graham’s take on this. About Graham Cooley:  Dr Graham Cooley joined ITM Power as CEO in 2009. ITM Power was the first hydrogen related company to be listed on the London Stock Market and has been developing electrolyser equipment for over 20 years. Graham started his career in the power sector in 1989 joining the CEGB and became Business Development Manager at National Power plc and then International Power plc developing energy storage and new generation technologies. Before joining ITM Power Graham was CEO of Sensortec Ltd, founding CEO of Metalysis Ltd, a spin out from Cambridge University and founding CEO of Antenova Ltd. Graham has a PhD in physics, an MBA and is a Fellow of the Institute of Metals, Minerals and Mining (FIMMM). Graham also sits on a number of industry bodies and is a member of the UK Government’s Hydrogen Advisory Council. About ITM Power: ITM Power plc manufactures integrated hydrogen energy solutions for grid balancing, energy storage and the production of renewable hydrogen for transport, renewable heat and chemicals. ITM Power plc was admitted to the AIM market of the London Stock Exchange in 2004. In October 2019, the Company announced the completion of a £58.8 million fundraising, including an investment by Linde of £38 million, together with the formation of a joint venture with Linde to focus on delivering renewable hydrogen to large-scale industrial projects worldwide. ITM Power operates from the world's largest electrolyser factory in Sheffield with a capacity of 1GW (1,000MW) per annum. Customers and partners include Sumitomo, Ørsted, Phillips 66, Scottish Power, Siemens Gamesa, Cadent, Northern Gas Networks, Gasunie, RWE, Engie, GNVert, National Express, Toyota, Hyundai and Anglo American among others. What kind of positive impact could it have for us adults? Chris Thompson from Living Streets, the charity for everyday walking, advises on the kind of phone apps that can help motivate us to get out walking. Paul Kelly from the University of Edinburgh describes the research they did into how active - or otherwise - office workers are compared with pensioners and the difference doing a mile each day could make to their lives. Scottish Power employees Simon, Eileen and Norman talk about why their organisation is encouraging its staff to incorporate a daily mile into their lives and share their own experiences of how it's working for them.

Welcome to the 8th CONKERS' CORNER. In this podcast I have the pleasure of speaking with Roz Sherali @Aim_Trading or Roz as everyone knows her on Twitter. Roz’s first interest in stocks and shares evolved from the Conservative government’s de-nationalisation policy of utilities and services. She participated in some the privatisations in the early 1990s, including that of Scottish Power. Roz is an ex-Investment Banker and has worked for both Deutsche Bank & JP Morgan. Whilst she sees her trading & investing as a hobby, it is one that she is very passionate about. She describes herself as a “high risk investor” that enjoys “taking very high risks in stocks”. Her strategy of researching strong high risk AIM-listed companies, with strong fundamentals, great management and getting her timing right has led her to some notable successes. These include UKOG, KRS and 88E where she made >1100% on her initial investment. Listen now to gain insights into how she invests, how she manages the high risks and learn from the lessons in her investing journey.

A confidential liquidator's report accuses Scottish Power of reneging on a promise to pay cashback to 600,000 customers who had bought extended warranties. Under the warranty, they could get their money back if they did not make a claim over a five year period. But the companies running the warranty scheme went bust, accusing Scottish Power of failing to honour an undertaking to indemnify cashback pay-outs. Scottish Power denies any improper improper conduct. Also, the rules that are meant to stop dodgy directors taking over football clubs - are they effective?
