We made it back just in time for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. We caught some incredible sets from Billy Cobham, Kokoroko, and the absolute highlight for both of us was Daniel Casimir and his big band.

Ashley Henry is one of a new generation of musicians that have been raised with a wide range of influences Born and raised in South London, England, United Kingdom, Ashley Henry’s listening and visual styles, range from Sinead Harnett, Digital Underground, ZuZu, Margot Fonteyn, Era Istrefi, Freddie Mercury, and Dreezy – through to having fans that include the abstract artist Gareth Nyandoro, being an advocate for the legend pianist Abdullah Ibrahim…and being a big 6LACK fan. In 2016 Ashley Henry graduated from Royal Academy of Music, performed with Jason Marsalis and collaborated with legends Terence Blanchard and Jean Toussaint. He is the youngest ever to hit the bill for the International Piano Trio Festival performing with Robert Glasper, and top that year by achieving a childhood dream of performing in the final of the Unisia International Piano Competition in South Africa. 16 January – 9 March 2017 sees Ashley Henry recording his second full studio sessions in London. Collaborating with Luke Flowers (Cinematic Orchestra), MC Mattic (Nowadays France & NY), the Legendary Jean Toussaint, Monte Booker (Soulection), Alicia Olatuja (President Obama Inaugurations – Unlimited Myles), Moses Boyd (Brownswood) and Anthony Joseph (Strut Records). In January 2017 – at only 25 years, Ashley Henry was commissioned as guest resident Musical Director for both Jazz Café, London and Ronnie Scotts, London and is a FADER MAGAZINE 2017 Emerging Artist. In March 2017 Ashley Henry was nominated for Jazz FM Award as Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Live Experience of the Year, the latter for his performance at the London Southbank. Ashley Henry has been the Head Coach of the Savannah College of Art and Design(SCAD) in Savannah, GA for 15 years. She led the SCAD “Bees” to three IHSA National Championship titles and her athletes have won 85 National and Reserve National Champion titles. In addition to her IHSA success, Ashley guided the team to seven Tournament of Champions Series titles and was the Frances Wong Coach of the Year four times. Soul Circle Radio Mix Series Vol.29 MOO LATTE (Poland I Denmark) @moolatte I started making music at the age of 7. I first learned to play the violin and classical guitar the first 9 years when I was in music school. After that I started playing jazz on guitar and bass. At 16, I began following the whole trip hop movement with influences from Massive Attack and Portishead. This was what led me into making music. Later, I kept on opening my head with beats by J Dilla, Madlib, Flying Lotus. I like to blend my jazz and classical background into my music by constructing harmonies and melodies as well as experimenting with the macro structures of entire albums. My last release "Syd" includes all of those things as well as introducing inspiration from my African heritage. Having a Congolese father, a Polish mother and spending the last 6 years in Scandinavia really pushed me to blend all those cultures together in a 16 track long piece. For the 29th installment of SCR Mix Series, I included discoveries from the beat scene and blended in two tracks from my older releases. Those tracks go along my musical road and remind me of the necessity of being up to date with what is happening around the world, because there is so much good music out there. Playlists for all past Sets of Jazz Gumbo will be found at jazzgumbo.blogspot.ca “Cape Town Fringe”, the long piece in the middle of the Set, sounds to me like I imagine South Africa feels and tastes. It’s a folksy, repetitive number that’s also bright and somewhat festive and also easy-going and fluid. It was my introduction to the music of Abdullah Ibrahim a few decades ago, when he still performed under the name Dollar Brand. It made me a fan. The next of his albums that I got hold of is titled “African Space Program” and features an album cover photo of the broad, dusty Savannah – a nice play on the concepts of folkways and modern progress. I hope you relax into the easy rhythms of the piece. I also came to know Joni Mitchell’s music way back then – must’ve been the 70’s. A friend told me about this album. “The Hissing of Summer Lawns”, is another title that I love, with album art depicting a group of people carrying a python across an expanse of green that fronts a cityscape of both residential homes and skyscrapers. Art & Music. Ideas, Images & Sounds. Mostly old classic works this Set. But give a good listen to the very outstanding newer music. Buble with an oldie but goodie, Ashley Henry with a dynamic pulser, and Polish Mazolewski teaming with American Gonzalez for a very playful and conceptual piece.
