Jill Bassett from Plae Bistro visits us in our Small Business Spotlight. Plae opened in 2007 so it's been around for awhile. But Jill has great advice for people just getting started. After working for various restaurants, helping them to succeed, and she finally felt like it was time to do her own thing. She felt that, at the time, Green Bay had plenty of sports bars and diners, but not many "date night" restaurants. The community is lucky she decided to go for it. She explains that the name means "Place To Laugh And Eat". "You are not just a business owner, you become so much more. Counselor, loan officer, probation officer...all of it". Team Player - Stories of Coaching and Leadership

Today's guest dropped an excellent SAT word on me when he described our leadup to this episode as "Serendipitous" - must be that Austin College education! He followed in the footsteps of his older brother Austin as an excellent Safety for the Austin College football team before becoming a Strength and Conditioning Coach at the collegiate level. He has since moved on to live the dream designing and selling weight rooms to schools across Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana as a Territory Manager for PLAE - welcome Evan Coachman to the show! - Evan jokes that he grew up in Allen when it was still a small town, then did the same in Frisco before it blew up, so now all of the residents in Van Alystne, TX better watch out for explosive growth! Evan shares stories of his time growing up as a coach's son in those two towns as well as diving into a discussion that any parent of young children will want to listen to describing the approach to social media for youngsters. - Much like Coach Kovo, Evan played on many middling or losing teams growing up so the two coaches discuss what it takes to turn a program around after periods of mediocrity. Evan was able to experience a turn-around 1st hand though along with fellow Austin College alum Vance Gibson as the Frisco Fighting Raccoons were able to turn in a 9-win season by his senior year! - Coach describes his time as a player at Austin College as well as diving into topics ranging from giving coaches time to turn around a program to the importance of investment in the program and facilities by administration. - As a strength and conditioning "sicko" as Coach Kovo likes to lovingly say, Evan gives parents more gems regarding what sports and activities to get your children involved with to help them experience a lifetime of healthy movement. - Finally, Evan's sporting interests vary from teams all across the Metroplex including FC Dallas and Everton out of the English Premier League. However as a dedicated Dallas Cowboys fan we ask Evan for his personal Cowboys Mount Rushmore! Join the Team Player Revolution! The biggest help is to leave a 5-star rating. If there's one thing we all know, it's that our brains work differently.  We think, relate, and communicate in unique ways. That's why communicating with anyone requires you to be a locksmith of people.  You must know your audience at such an intimate level that you're able to find the right key to the right door, and adapt your strategy to achieve common comprehension. Communicating with neurodiverse individuals has shown to be a common roadblock for many, largely due to misunderstandings, false assumptions, and lack of awareness. The goal of today's episode is to explain neurodiversity, debunk the existing myths surrounding the topic, and discuss how to better communicate with neurodivergent individuals.  Specifically, we cover: Why understanding neurodivergent individuals matters (6:00) The definitions and cognitive strengths and weaknesses of individuals with ADHD, Autism, and Dyslexia (throughout) Actionable tips for communicating and collaborating with neurodivergent individuals (56:57) How to advocate for yourself if you are neurodivergent (1:05:07) Related AoC Resources: Book: Conscious Coaching: The Art & Science to Building Buy-In Upcoming Book: Stay In the Know Online Course: Bought In Free Access to the Presentation Mentioned: Creating The Optimal Coaching Environment Quiz: What Drives You? Dr. Gonzalez, Chief Development & Scientific Officer: TheBioBox & RESTEM, obtained his Ph.D and BS from the University of California, Irvine. After 22+ years of coaching at the D-I level, Coach Bewley stepped out of his previous coaching role as Director of Basketball Strength & Conditioning at Clemson University and joined PLAE in July as their Global Director of Performance and Education.
Clemson University Head Coach Brad Brownell hired Bewley before the 2016-17 basketball season to advance the Tigers' efforts in the weight room. That decision came to fruition when the Tigers advanced to the 2018 Sweet 16 after being picked second to last to finish in the ACC, capping only the fourth time in school history; the Tigers made a Sweet 16 appearance. Also, Bewley helped the Tigers win Basketball Gold in the FISU University World Games, beat three Top-5 teams in a single season, and snapped a 59-game losing streak to beat the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill. Before his Clemson tenure, Bewley was Assistant Director of Strength & Conditioning for the Yellow Jackets from 2012-16, helping Georgia Tech to the National Invitation Tournament's quarterfinals (NIT) in March 2016. He was charged with implementing athletic performance and sports nutrition programs for Georgia Tech men's basketball and men's tennis in four seasons.
Before his appointment in Atlanta, Bewley was the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach for Basketball & Golf at the University of Dayton from 2005-12. During his tenure, Bewley helped the Dayton Flyers Basketball programs experience improved and sustained success. The men's team captured an NCAA Tournament Appearance to the Round of 32 (2009) and an NIT National Championship (2010). In the same period, the women's team seized an A-10 Conference Tournament Championship (2012), three NCAA Tournament Appearances (2010, 2011, 2012), with one advancing to the Round of 32 (2010). Bewley also served as the Specialist in Sports Nutrition at Dayton. Before his tenure with the Flyers, Bewley spent 2002-06 as an Assistant Strength & Conditioning Coach and Specialist in Sports Nutrition at Georgia Southern University. He developed and implemented athletic performance programs for baseball, basketball, soccer, and volleyball while in Statesboro. Bewley is a 1998 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, earning a bachelor's degree in physical education. Bewley earned a master's degree in educational leadership as a graduate assistant strength & conditioning coach at the University of Nevada. Originally from Louisville, Ky., Bewley is the creator and founder of DWMASports.com, which allows coaches to perform a movement in the same time it takes to do a dynamic warmup. Bewley is also the president and founder of CriticalReload.com, a nutritional consulting and product company created to safely assist coaches and athletes with gaps in their nutrition utilizing products in association with remote education and online learning. Furthermore, Bewley is a Certified Specialist in Sports Nutrition. His wife, Lisa, has worked as an assistant athletic trainer at Kennesaw State University for five years. Hi everyone. And welcome back to this episode of BFR radio. Hope your own training is going well. Thank you for all of your questions about blood flow restriction. And if you do have any burning questions of your own, please DM me through my social channels, which is @chrisgaviglio or my website contact us page, which is www.sportsrehab.com.au. A reminder that I have an introduction to BFR presentation on the play education platform. That's P L AE. This is a fantastic initiative by PLAE. And the goal is actually to extend my one hour to my full BFR workshop on this online platform. So stay tuned for that. And I'll definitely let you know. There's also a lot of other fantastic presentations and courses on this platform so make sure you check it out. Click here: https://plaeacademy.com   Today's episode is going to be the last episode in relation to this upper body short mini series in BFR. And recently I've been focusing on how BFR can be used effectively in different upper body scenarios.  In particular, we looked at the muscular benefits with low load BFR bench, press and practical bicep curls. The third episode highlighted the benefits of using BFR for wrist fractures and the fourth, and the penultimate episode showed that we can improve grip, strength and size using something very simple as hand squeezing type exercises. Hence, I thought it was a really great segue to today's episode, which is more of a practical sporting example, and really the title says it all: Effect of exercise program with blood flow restriction on upper limb vasculature and performance in wrestlers. Ghoraba, M., Ghazy, M., & El Tomey, M. (2017). IJSSA, 2, 298-327.   In the study I mentioned a technique called a Gut Wrench. Here is the link to a good video explaining it if you're interested: Click here to see Gut Wrench technique video I really like this study with respect to the practical applications of BFR to a sport. There's actually a few other sports specific studies starting to appear in literature, which really highlights the positive application of BFR. In closing, if there's a topic of interest you'd like me to cover in this short mini series please let me know, as I'm really interested in knowing what interests you. Thanks again for listening. Hope you've enjoyed it. If you do know of someone who would benefit from this episode, please share it. And if you haven't got a set of your own BFR cuffs, please visit my website, which is www.sportsrehab.com.au, where you can purchase the Sports Rehab Tourniquet. I can also help you with your training. So please contact me via my website. or, DM me through my socials, which is @chrisgaviglio. Welcome back to this episode of BFR Radio, hope you're doing well. Remember if you have any questions about BFR, please DM me through my social channels, which is @chrisgaviglio on Instagram or Twitter, or alternatively through my website, contact us, or actually it's just me page, which is sportsrehab.com.au. I've been actually receiving a few messages, so thanks for reaching out and I'll definitely be incorporating them into the podcast over the coming episodes. If you're looking for some good BFR learning opportunities, I've teamed up with PLAE who are known for  really top quality sports flooring.  They have an education arm as well and I've produced an introduction to BFR presentation.  This is an hour long presentation, which has some learning opportunities or learning questions along the way. So you can actually test your understanding of BFR and actual goal is to put my full BFR workshop on this online learning platform. So stay tuned for that. Click here for the PLAE website and access my course: https://plaeacademy.com   There are lots of other great courses that are available to you from some of the top S&C coaches, all around the world so make sure you check them out. And also talking about just general BFR information, I also appear on another podcast with a fellow health specialist. Her name is Zora, and she actually goes by the Instagram handle @hackmyage. And overall she interviews lots of fantastic guests looking at ways to, I guess, Biohack their own health.  This can range from anything, from exercise to nutrition, to breathing, cold water immersion, and so forth. Click here to check out her website & other great information: Podcast with Zora So moving on to today's article we're going to look at hand grip strength. And in particular, it's called: Effects of handgrip training with venous restriction on brachial artery vasodilation Credeur, D. P., Hollis, B. C., & Welsch, M. A. (2010). Medicine and science in sports and exercise, 42(7), 1296. And this serves as a really good segue for my next episode, where it'll actually be the last in the mini series on BFR upper body. And it's actually going to look at how you can use BFR in upper body training to help athletes where improved grip or grappling ability is really important. And if you do know of someone who would benefit from this episode, please share it. I really do appreciate all your interactions.  And if you haven't got your own set of BFR cuffs, please visit my website, which is sportsrehab.com.au. Initially hired by former Athletic Director Bob Devaney to start a strength and conditioning program at Nebraska in 1969. Nebraska is recognized as the first university to have a paid strength coach and celebrates it’s 50th anniversary of Husker Power August 2019. Epley served 35 years as NU’s head strength coach for football helping the Huskers win 356 games in 35 years and five national championships. He then moved into an associate athletic director position to oversee the design and construction of the Tom and Nancy Osborne Athletic Complex and Hawks Championship Center before retiring from NU in 2006. Epley left Nebraska to serve as director of coaching performance for the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) which he founded in Lincoln in 1978 but had moved to Colorado Springs. Epley had served as president and chairman of the board of directors for five years. The group honored Epley with its first National Strength Coach-of-the-Year Award in 1980, and in 1993 he was presented the NSCA’s first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2009 the NSCA Board of Directors changed the name of the award to the Boyd Epley Award for Lifetime Achievement. Epley is recognized as the most decorated strength coach in history and for his national contribution in strength and conditioning, he was named a 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award winner by the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Boyd was also honored by the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame in 1993 with the Lyell Bremser Merit Award.Epley was named to the U.S. Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame in June 2003. He was also honored on the March 2001 cover of American Football Monthly magazine, which tabbed him as the Godfather of Strength and Conditioning. Lindy’s magazine recognized Epley as one of its Top 100 Most Important College Football Sports Figures of the Century. Epley was one of five Huskers on the top 100 list, joining Hall of Fame coaches Bob Devaney and Tom Osborne, Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers and two-time Outland Trophy winner Dave Rimington. In June of 2010, John D. Lukacs of ESPN said “Epley is arguably the single most important individual in the history of strength and conditioning in college athletics.” Epley served as a team captain of the National Champion track team at Phoenix Junior College and starred as a pole vaulter. He then became the Nebraska pole vault record holder as a junior at Nebraska and was the Huskers first 15-foot indoor vaulter. A back injury as a senior ended his vaulting career but opened the door for him to create the strength coaching profession which now has over 55,000 certified strength & conditioning coaches. Epley received his associate’s degree from Phoenix JC in 1968, his bachelor’s degree in 1970 from Nebraska and added a master’s degree in education from Nebraska in 1972. Epley is married to the former Jane Lilyhorn of Holdrege, Neb., and they have a son, Jay Robert who is a certified strength coach, and a daughter, Jenna Shea who has a PhD in Nursing Practice and married a certified strength coach, Chase Beideck. The Beideck’s have three sons, Cash, Colt and Crew. In This Episode We Discuss: What accomplishment is he most proud of. Biggest mistake he has made and how he learned from it.
