Bill Dedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter and New York Times #1 bestselling author of Empty Mansions, shares the extraordinary story of a reclusive copper heiress, the battle over her fortune, and the HBO series adaptation now in development. As an investigative journalist, Bill Dedman has built his career writing stories that change the way we see the world. It was that reporter's instinct—paired with relentless curiosity—that led him to one of the most extraordinary tales of American wealth: the mysterious life of Huguette Clark and the spending of a great American fortune. Had Bill not stumbled onto her story—and brought it to light in Empty Mansions—her final wishes might well have been lost in the legal battle over her $300 million estate. Huguette was the daughter of copper magnate and U.S. senator W.A. Clark, one of the richest men in America. She grew up in dazzling extravagance: the largest home in New York City, with 121 rooms, four art galleries displaying rare art, and a $100,000 pipe organ that filled the halls with music. There was also Bellosguardo, the family's 23-acre estate in Santa Barbara with sweeping views of the Pacific. She traveled to Europe, attended champagne soirées and black-tie balls—it was, by any measure, a life lived in grandeur. And yet, in stark contrast, Huguette later chose seclusion. For decades, Huguette lived reclusively in her Fifth Avenue apartments, surrounded by paintings by Renoir, Degas, and Corot, and by her vast collection of antique dolls—thousands of them, some dressed in custom Dior. She painted portraits, read voraciously, and built elaborate miniature temples by hand, each costing up to $100,000 to make. In her eighties, though still in excellent health, she chose to move into a modest hospital room, where she remained for the next twenty years—her whereabouts unknown even to longtime friends. Meanwhile, her staff kept her mansions in New York, California, and Connecticut just as she left them—waiting, it seemed, for her return. What makes Huguette's story even more remarkable is her quiet generosity to friends, strangers, and staff: $30 million to her nurse, a Stradivarius violin for the nurse's son, a Rolls- Royce for the chauffeur, a Renoir, fine jewels, Christmas cards with $30,000 checks enclosed—among many other gestures that changed the lives of those around her. Her choices were so unusual that distant relatives, left out of her will, seized on Huguette's eccentricities as grounds to question her capacity, sparking a legal battle over her fortune. Was she being manipulated? Was she unwell? Crazy? "Did you hear about the dolls?" Had they been Birkins, she'd be on the pages of Vogue... Bill uncovers a more nuanced truth: a woman of elegance and discretion, a loyal friend and deeply caring person, a trained artist dedicated to her craft. "It takes a while to get close enough to someone's choices so that they start to make sense," he said. That insight runs through Empty Mansions, the New York Times #1 bestseller that continues to captivate readers. A brilliant reporter and storyteller, no one but Bill Dedman could have written this story with such depth and intrigue. Learn more about your ad choices.

S4:E170 The Weekly Update and a discussion with co-host Paul Clark and guest co-host Josh Miller about startup investing for GenZ and Millennials. We're talking about small investments in Startup Funds that offer diligence, deal flow and diversification at a low cost provided that Congress successfully changes the definition of an Accredited Investor. We'll be talking more about a rule change for Accredited investors over the next month with Chief Counsel of the Senate Banking Committee which has purview over such a rule change. Next week we will be getting pitches from 3 of my favorite startups from the Spring ATDC Showcase. These companies are candidates for our ATDC Fund and for VentureSouth. We´ll Soon Be Going Home). In this episode, we're joined by Paul Clark, author of The Omega Course, a coming-of-age novel about guilt, redemption, and loss of faith. We learn about the central plot of the book, where 17-year-old Ross kills another driver in a car accident and seeks to find redemption, initially through the real-life “Alpha Course,” which pushes a conservative approach to Christianity. However, at the same time, Ross also takes a fictional “Omega Course” which presents a more critical perspective about the origins of Christianity and the Bible. In the episode, we talk extensively about the research that went into the novel, with special focus on the actual Alpha Course and what makes it so dreadful, as well as the choice to present this topic through fiction. We also discuss the history of monotheism, the authorship of the Bible, evidence for the historical Jesus, and why it all matters. Paul also explains to us whether or not a true atheist can believe in redemption.Order The Omega Course here: https://books2read.com/omega-course Paul's website: https://paulclark42.com/ Follow Nathan on BlueSky: @nathgalexander.bsky.socialNathan's website: https://www.nathangalexander.com/ Beyond Atheism is produced and distributed by Atheists United Studios: https://www.atheistsunited.org/au-studios

On the upcoming episode of The Hermetic Hour for July 29th, 2010, host Poke Runyon will discuss the background behind the 2007 cult film "Beyond Lemuria" which he wrote and produced for C.H.S. Productions. Beyond Lemuria is a feature length science fiction/occult drama that was filmed in the ancient ruins of Nan Madol in the Pacific, inside an O.T.A. temple in Pasadena, high on the slopes of Mt. Shasta, and deep in the lava caverns under America's holy mountain. The film features leading occult figures in the roles of the Mt. Shasta Avatars. Lon Milo DuQuette takes the role of Hermes Trismegistus, Paul Clark is the Master Jesus, Merrick Hamer is Phylos of Atlantis, and Frater Solomon is Samyaza, the Fallen Angel from "The Book of Enoch." The dark side of the drama involves "The Shaver Mystery," a 1940s revelation of a secret underground realm of Atlantean-Lemurian survivors who possess the super-scientific weapons of the ancients. These evil "Deros" offer their secrets to the black magicians in the film, while the white magicians (played by the same actors) seek the wisdom of the ancients up on the Holy Mountain. Beyond Lemuria is available on DVD from Amazon, and is occasionally shown to select audiences; most recently at Hop Louie's bar and restaurant in L.A.'s Chinatown for a group of college art students. Tune in and get a "behind the scenes" run down on a controversial cult classic.
The Bolshoi flirted with Goth and synth pop in the late 80s, but what they ended up doing was releasing some great alternative rock songs. "A Way", "Lindy's Party" and "Sunday Morning" still hold up and tours with Peter Murphy and Sisters of Mercy should have propelled them further, but it didn't happen. Eventually the band splintered with lead singer Trevor Tanner moving to FLA and going solo and keyboardist Paul Clark doing his thing in Seattle. Those two have partnered up over the years as the Bolshoi Brothers and are about to release some new music. They join us this week to discuss their journey and where they are today. This Thursday the Hermetic Hour will present a lecture by Poke Runyon on Dark Mirror Evocation and Angelic Invocation that was first delivered at a symposium sponsored by Paul Clark's Fraternity of the Hidden Light in 2002. This talk will reveal the philosophy, the techniques, and the effects related to these "grand operations" of ceremonial magick: how to summon spirits, and call down angels. Poke will discuss this subject in depth, and give the psychological, spiritual and traditional background behind our most dynamic form of modern urban shamanism. This talk will be directed toward those sincerely interested in this subject. It will be dense with facts, techniques and practical instructions. It may be too heavy for parlor room 'fluffy bunnies,' but if you want to outgrow your fluff, tune in and find out how the boys and girls back in the dim-lit, blue-painted garages do it. Good Magick! Olympic hero turned peace campaigner Ruslan Shanidza sets out on his most ambitious undertaking, leading a campaign to unseat the brutal strongman who rules his post-communist homeland. He assembles a fractious coalition of rivals and former enemies. But they must confront some very dangerous men, who have so much blood on their hands that they can never allow their grip on power to slip. The conflict quickly escalates as the President and his henchmen plot a murderous crackdown. Ruslan soon learns that he has placed himself and his family right in the firing line in an increasingly desperate fight to the finish. This third Ruslan Shanidza novel can be enjoyed without reading the other two. It is a political thriller rooted in time and place that draws upon real historical events as it races to its denouement."Clark uses real events as inspiration, weaving history into an engaging narrative…told through the story of Ruslan and his family alongside a cast of other (many unsavoury) characters. It's a style I enjoy…It's also engaging in a way that I found myself thinking about it while I wasn't reading it… Although the last in a trilogy (and I haven't read the others), that didn't hold me back and it can be read as a standalone."Lachlan Page, author of Magical Disinformation and The General of Caracas"…the quality of the characters depicted in this book was superb. The author did an amazing job at comprehensively developing the characters by giving them really strong personalities that will stick with the reader till the end of the story."…gripped my interest throughout the entire book due to its powerful message of freedom from tyranny. The political and military aspects of the book were very intriguing..."I recommend this book to lovers of historical fiction and thrillers...if you seek a great read, Day of the Long Knivesby Paul Clark is the book for you."OnlineBookClub.Org Official Review
Hey, guitarists (OK...and wannabe guitarists too)! What were the records that made/make YOU want to pick a guitar and learn to play? That's the burning question this week, as we welcome Third Lad Andy Golding from C86 legends The Wolfhounds to O3L! The Wolfhounds are an English noise pop band formed in Romford, Essex, in 1985 by Dave Callahan, Paul Clark, Andy Golding, Andy Bolton and Frank Stebbing, and originally active until 1990. The band reformed in 2005 and continues to write, record and play live, releasing new albums in 2014, 2016, and 2020. (Thanks, Wikipedia.) Andy's current project is called Dragon Welding (hmmm...what does that mean? Listen and find out!), whose latest single is "TADT (These Are Dangerous Times)." What the hip kids are saying about Dragon Welding: "..a pulsating beat with all sorts of strings being strummed and plucked, in all sorts of 60's/70's school holidays tv series soundtrack kind of ways." - Whisperin' & Hollerin' - 2023 "Dragon Welding.. guitarist of Essex post-rock outliers The Wolfhounds, is a wondrous tapestry of ambient guitar instrumentals and sonic manipulations. This is music that channels the cosmic experimentations of 70s German avant-garde synth-rock with a dark Essex twist that somehow has glorious poptones. For fans of : Mouse On Mars, Plaid, Cluster." - Platekompaniet - 2023 Plus, as an added bonus, hear some of Brett's teenage recordings, including the "legendary" 1990 Empty Glass concert! What the hip kids said: "Wow, he sounds like a neanderthal toddler who just discovered music for the first time!" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

There is a Rule to Family Court that there is a six month limit to custody challenges that judges typically ignore. Contrary to the rule of law and 2,000 years of the legal profession parents aren't hearing about it BECAUSE it is a GAG ORDER. There are GAG ORDERS that are still being litigated for 10 YEARS. If a parent challenges the GAG ORDER, then there will be repercussions. We gave advice on finding out the who knows who in the courthouses. "This was meant to be a story about Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 but seems to have turned into one about when the Dalai Lama told me to eff off." Master storyteller and satirist, Nick Revell returns to BBC Radio 4 with a remarkably believable (no, really!) story about one man and his time traveling tea towel. We find out how Bonnie Prince Charlie became a cruise ship entertainer and meet celebrities from the past, present and future as the story wends its way from The Fox and Gynaecologist (Islington's last remaining traditional boozer) around the world, through time - and back to the pub. Hold on tight because it's a funny, fast-paced ride through Nick's imagination and out the other side with original music and sound design by contemporary composer, Paul Clark.
