Word of the Day

Scenography is a noun that refers to the representation of objects in perspective.  Our word of the day's root word is ‘scene', which comes from the Greek word for ‘stage.' So it's appropriate that it's commonly used in theatre to describe the art of arranging scenery. Example: Last night's play was something of a disappointment. The acting was fine, but they had arranged the scenery in such a way that we could barely get a sense that the action was set in post-war France. Sometimes bad scenography can ruin an otherwise exceptional play.

“Childfree describes the voluntary choice to not have children. In most societies and for most of human history, choosing not to have children was both difficult and undesirable. The availability of reliable contraception along with support provided in old age by one's government rather than one's family has made childlessness an option for some people, though they may be looked down upon in certain communities. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, the word "childfree" first appeared sometime before 1901,[1] and was described as a 'trend' in 2014 in Psychology Today online magazine. [2] The meaning of the term "childfree" extends to encompass the children of others (in addition to one's own children) and this distinguishes it further from the more usual term "childless", which is traditionally used to express the idea of having no children, whether by choice or by circumstance.[3] The term "child-free" has been cited in Australian literature to refer to parents who are without children at the current time. This may be due to them living elsewhere on a permanent basis or a short-term solution such as childcare.[4]” I enjoy self-parenting, self-marriage, and solo living the most. Mara Thomas got to know poet and educator Zoe Tuck through the School of the Alternative in Black Mountain, North Carolina where Zoe taught a class called “Book Magic.”  “Book Magic” started from the premise that there is a grain of truth to the magic we remember from children's books and other fantastical literature. And if those books contained a grain of truth, how might participants nurture that grain and write their own magical systems into being? Enjoy this conversation about the mystical and intuitive parts of the creative process, ranging from friendship to trance poetics and patterned breath to the potency of shared creative spaces. Check out the show notes below for links to many of the books, writers, and resources referenced in this episode. “People have been worried about opera's demise for about four centuries now,” says Dr Caitlin Vincent, Lecturer in Creative Industries at the School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne. “It's a very old art form. We first saw western opera emerge in the 1600s in Italy and in the 21st century we're coming across the issue that opera is really defined by its museum work - the greatest hits of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries - that are still the mainstay of opera companies worldwide.” Dr Vincent explains that in order to maintain the tradition of these works, some companies are resorting to problematic and outdated practices like blackface or yellowface makeup. “This is where you start to get a rift between different kinds of audiences, between the really traditionalist audiences who say opera should be done exactly the way as it was first intended to be done and between more modern, progressive audiences that say, we love opera but it needs to be updated in order to reflect a modern-day society,” she says. So how can we interpret these works in a way that does not perpetuate harmful stereotypes or cultural appropriation? One of the popular and successful strategies is education, Dr Vincent says. “Companies program problematic works like Madam Butterfly or The Mikado alongside educational initiatives that are designed to contextualise the works, framing it as a historical artefact and giving you the history that you need.” “The other thing about cultural appropriation, is who are the people who have been hired to interpret these works on stage? Do they represent diverse viewpoints, do they have any connection to the culture that is being portrayed on stage? “What we really need is to try to embed support for emerging composers and mid-career librettists to promote talent in Australia, the United States and the UK to actually cultivate those voices of the next generation. “Otherwise, we will just continue to program Madam Butterfly and Turandot forever, until eventually we can't anymore because they're too problematic.” Episode recorded: June 1, 2021. This episode is dedicated to my friend Edwin Erminy. The theatre and arts community of Venezuela, Trinidad and Tobago and the world lost an amazing artist tonight. I lost my friend. Edwin will always be a testament to the joy, excitement and passion for Scenography. His love of all things art was infectious. I cannot capture all that his life entailed in a single post nor can I begin to find the right words because there will not be enough of them. I have lost a mentor. Someone who helped make me a better person by being around him. Who helped show me the way to becoming a better teacher. Who would also make fun of me because I was the antithesis to his way of making a plan or a drawing. Edwin's favorite phrase to me was "Come on Man" or his over the top exclamation of "What?! What?!" and then break out into laughter. I'm glad we challenged each other. The last thing I would ever want to do was fail him no matter how much of an argument we would get into. I will remember his patience even though most things drove him mad but he never let that get out or show unless necessary. I will think of how he made fun of me for being an American and how his english somehow conveniently got bad the more "tired" he became. There will be no last moments for me because you will not be gone. In Buddhism it is said that a spirit is not extinguished upon death, but instead transfers to another in one of six planes. That a person’s actions during their lifetime results in karma that determines in what form there spirit will be reborn—as a human, an animal, or various forms of spirits, including angels, demons, gods, and ghosts. You will return and I know you will come visit us. I'll always be sure to keep an eye out for you. "I have been and always shall be your friend"

Australian dancer and choreographer Atlanta Eke brought us 'Wetware', a performance concerned with time travel. The work, a response to the RMIT Design Hub’s Occupied exhibition and further developed for MPavilion, imagined that architects from 2050 had travelled back in time via the digital universe to share a dystopian tale from a near future; a drowned world where land-based life has returned to the sea. The performance of 'Wetware' was followed by a related panel discussion entitled ‘The architecture of display: Scenography as an agent for performance and design’, and included such noteworthy participants as Atlanta Eke herself, Fleur Watson of RMIT Design Hub, David Neustein, and Grace Mortlock of Otherothers. Listen back to to Atlanta Eke’s performance and keep it locked for the talk!
