I was born in Memphis, Tennessee and grew up in the green, leafy humidity of North Carolina. My parents lovingly tolerated their strange son and provided all the art supplies I could get my grubby hands around. My previous work ranges from rebranding cultural institutions to writing, designing, and art directing experiences in theme parks and museums. I attended UNCSA's School of Design and Production and received my MFA in Scenic Design in 2021. I currently live and work in Los Angeles as a Scenic and Set Designer and can, more often than not, be found drinking coffee or filling up a sketchbook one page at a time - or on my motorcycle headed somewhere to do both at once. I firmly believe that design is both lens and mirror - a way to better understand the world, the self, and those within it. And a world without design and art is all the poorer for it.TECHnically Speaking is a public service of USITT, which seeks to have a broad conversation on topics of interest to its members, but it is neither a legal interpretation nor a statement of Institute policy. Nate Thieme is the VP of Scenic Experiences at 3dx Scenic.  What started as a scenic fabrication department for a live events company, 3dx grew when demand was generated from outside the business, notably Kings Island, where now nearly 90% of the business comes from external clients while still supporting the live events produced internally.  In this interview, Nate talks about scenic design, fabricating for IP, and creating immersive environments. Scenic Design   “We like to say it's like old-school craftsmanship meets new world technology.”   Designing for scenery is like putting together a puzzle.  The picture of the finished project comes to life when the project coordinators and managers on the front-end deconstruct the vision of the finished project.  By doing so, they can determine the internal armatures and structures that go into supporting the physical product.   A lot of back and forth open communication needs to happen to ensure that these project can come together, and oftentimes the final tweaking is done once onsite.  While working on a touring piece for the movie Trolls, 3dx was tasked with creating a shipping container that had many dynamic components, including a hinge that would come up, hair that rise, and other motion elements.  When the hinge did not rise as originally planned, it was determined that a piece was blocking the hinge from being able to lift.  The final tweaks onsite were able to identify the issue and resolve it quickly.   Additional factors, regardless of whether the object is static or dynamic, need to be taken into consideration that are dependent on the project.  For instance, size of the piece, the wind loads it will need to take, and even seismic loads if being constructed in a location such as California.  With all of the structural considerations, it also needs to meet aesthetic standards so it is visually stunning as well. Fabricating for IP   "When you talk real estate, you talk location, location, location. When you talk about IP, you talk sample, sample, sample."   The process for working with intellectual property is the same as when there is no IP involved, but the project itself takes additional time.  Because of how protective IP owners are of their brand, it requires additional meetings and input from all stakeholders in the project.   From the beginning of the project, the 3-dimensional file with the shapes and dimensions needs to be provided from the client.  3dx will then produce multiple samples that will then be distributed to the designer, the client, the owner of the IP for final approval, and one to be kept internally.  Once the sample is completed and confirmed, at that point the project is treated like a recipe to ensure total consistency and transparency amongst all parties. Immersive Environments   "The better that we can create this dimensional environment and the experience, the easier is is to transport you out of your day-to-day stressors and into something else.”   From a pencil sketch through the final deliverable, Nate shares the excitement of being able to bring immersive projects to life.  To ensure minimal disruption to the client's operation, which is often a theme park or shopping mall, much of the work is done overnight after the venue has closed.  Then, the next day when guests walk in, it's as if it effortlessly came to life.   By using architectural visuals, you can hide seams or partitions that are necessary when transporting pieces onsite.  Nate shares that you use what you have, along with creativity, such as placing snow on a rooftop or using dental molding in a brick wall.   So much of the information and content we consume in our lives in 2-dimensional, whether on screens, television, or at movies, yet 3dx focuses on creating immersive, dimensional environments that let people escape the stressors of everything going on in our daily lives.  The more immersive the environment, the more likely people are to a) enjoy the experience, and b) spend more money on food & beverage, retail, and ancillary experiences. To learn more about 3dx, you can visit www.3dxscenic.com, or reach out to Nate at nthieme@3dxscenic.com or info@3dxscenic.com, or via phone at (513) 469-1015.   This podcast wouldn't be possible without the incredible work of our amazing team: Audio and video editing by Abigail Giganan Scheduling and correspondence by Kristen Karaliunas Branding and design by Fabiana Fonseca Email marketing by Sam Bercik To connect with AttractionPros: attractionpros@gmail.com

"Afghanistan is a divided country on the verge of war and two childhood friends are about to be torn apart. It’s a beautiful afternoon in Kabul and the skies are full of the excitement and joy of a kite flying tournament. But neither Hassan or Amir can foresee the terrible incident which will shatter their lives forever." Hosseini’s original book has sold 31.5million copies worldwide and has been translated into 60 different languages. Now an A-Level set text, the show will appeal to students and those familiar with the story, as well as those discovering the powerful narrative for the first time. His other plays include Tortilla Curtain, adapted from the novel by T.C. Boyle, which received an Edgerton Foundation New American Play Award and was a finalist for the San Diego Theatre Critics’ Circle Award for Best New Play. The nominating committee wrote: “Matthew Spangler’s body of work is distinguished for the deep humanity and ethical sensibility he brings to life on stage and through his incisive scholarship. His work moves across boundaries of nationality, race, and culture to create narratives of compassion and empathy transcending difference.” Matthew Spangler receives the Leslie Irene Coger Award for Live Performance from the National Communication Association (2017)

“Sometimes it’s the sea, other times the mountains, often it was the forest, the city, the plain too, I’ve flirted with the plain too, I’ve given myself up for dead all over the place, of hunger, of old age, murdered, drowned, and then for no reason, of tedium, nothing like breathing your last to put new life in you…” Texts for Nothing, Samuel Beckett The Sea The Mountain The Forest The City The Plain is written by Matthew Freeman. The play was originally produced in October of 2019 at the Brick Theater in Williamsburg Brooklyn under the direction of David Cote. The play was performed by Robert Honeywell. Sound Design was by Chris Chappell, Lighting Design by Nicholas Houfek and Scenic Design by Kerry Lee Chipman. The stage manager was Jodi Witherall. What you are about to hear is from a live performance recorded by Daniel McKleinfeld. This is not pristine audio: it was recorded with a mic designed for record keeping, not broadcast. While we’re aware this is an era of audio made with perfection and care, we hope you’ll enjoy the sound for its imperfect flavor, and appreciate the rare feeling of overhearing a performance as it was performed.

(00:00-38:12): We are privileged to be joined by Pastor Ron Heitman from Evangel Assembly of God in Hanover Park. He starts by talking about his history in ministry and how he came to be a church leader. Evangel Church is remarkably diverse, with 55+ nations represented on 2 campuses. He also touches on the stigma of Assemblies of God. How are they viewed? Ron has had substantial experiences with miracles first-hand. A family in a third-world country received where his parents were working received an envelope from a mysterious “Mary Smith”. It contained money and a letter of encouragement, unprovoked. Later on, his father went to meet this woman, and she miraculously knew his name and his wife’s name. (39:15-1:18:05): Ian’s college friend and the Creative Arts Pastor at First Baptist Church in Elgin, Joshua Hoegh joins us. He talks about his upbringing in music, specifically on the piano. He shares his introversion and how it sometimes juxtaposes his role as a worship leader. He and his wife Melissa live in a dorm at Judson, as she is a resident director; which is also an ironic situation for an introvert. He is speaking at the FILO Chicago event in May on Scenic Design on a Dime. He wants to create a good balance with being creative in the church while working in the gospel.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Remarks by Visual & Performing Arts Dean Dr. Colleen Reilly at the Reception to Recognize James V. Thomas“Sometimes you’re lucky and you don’t even know it.” -- August Wilson, Gem of the OceanThis quote from playwright August Wilson reminds us to acknowledge the ways in which the universe provides for us without our even noticing.  I share it tonight because it is from Wilson’s play Gem of the Ocean.  As many of you know August Wilson penned an American Decalogue--10 plays about the African American experience, each one set in a decade of the 20th century.  Gem of the Ocean, set in 1904, is the first of these, although it was the ninth play Wilson added to his American Cycle.  It is also one of several plays for which James V Thomas created an award-winning scenic design. In Wilson’s worldview, time is circular, and as we honor James V Thomas tonight I invite us to be mindful of the past, present, and future in all that we do.  I see this in James’ work.  He was honored this year with Achievements in Scenic Design by the National Black Theater Festival for his 39-year history with the Ensemble Theatre.  He is one of only a few designers that has designed all ten of Wilson’s American cycle.  He is a design luminary in Houston, Pittsburgh, and Syracuse where he has produced scenic designs for ten world premieres. As a theatre scholar, I cannot help but trace a bit of history to demonstrate first, how time is circular and second, acknowledge how lucky we are.  When I arrived at graduate school in Pittsburgh, PA I did not know how lucky I was.  I held a teaching fellowship with Kuntu Repertory Theatre, the nation’s oldest African American theatre company.  I served there with Eileen J. Morris, the Ensemble Theatre’s Artist Director.  Kuntu Repertory Theatre, under the direction of Vernell A. Lillie, held the legacy of the Black Horizon Theatre- a company co-founded by August Wilson and Rob Penny--and was the precedent for the New Horizon Theater which continues its work in Pittsburgh to produce new works from African American points of view.  The New Horizon Theater is one among many theatre companies for which James V Thomas served as the resident scenic designer.  Imagine my surprise upon landing here, at HCC, and finding this connection to James. This is how we are lucky and we do not even know it. We are lucky that every student that encounters James is connected to this rich legacy of artists who came before them and who are carried by him through his deep and complex work.  We are lucky that an artist of his caliber serves with us in supporting the next generation of our craft.  We are lucky that he manages all of his professional opportunities, and there are many, around our class and production schedule and often uses them to extend opportunities for our students.  We are lucky that the national theatre community sees in James what we experience every day:  a brilliant artist and designer committed to service, mentorship, and education.  James, it is an honor to serve with you here at HCC in a craft that cannot be bound by time, geography, and administrative limitations.  You are a gem, and we will always be grateful that you choose to shine here.16th NBTF wraps on a high noteBy Lynn Felder Winston-Salem JournalAug 3, 2019https://www.journalnow.com/news/local/th-nbtf-wraps-on-a-high-note/article_ee10d546-4448-50e6-ad7a-4fa9fae9a28c.html

He also discusses how he was instantly drawn to set design (as well as flying) when he first saw “Peter Pan” as a child; his self-education in set design through his college years -- and what he discovered when he entered the graduate design program at the Yale School of Drama; his extensive work with not-for-profit companies including the Manhattan Theatre Club, Mark Taper Forum, Goodspeed Musicals, Circle Repertory Company and Lincoln Center Theater -- plus 50 shows for City Center's Encores! series; his affinity for the Victorian era; why he hasn't done many designs for musicals -- and the musical he'd most like to tackle; how he feels about being "typecast" for his interiors and exteriors of homes through the years -- and costume designer Jane Greenwood's sage advice on Beatty's particular specialty; how he chooses his projects -- and the kinds of shows he doesn't like to do; what it was like to imagine different parts of the Talley family property in different eras in Lanford Wilson's famed trilogy; and how the design of “Proof” was actually based on an old sweater.
