In this edition of the One Drink Book Club, Jamey discusses A Walk in the Woods by writer Bill Bryson. The humorous and insightful book chronicles Bryson's attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail, a 2,200-mile-long trail that stretches from Georgia to Maine, along with his friend Stephen Katz. Jamey's guest is Nick Bowers, who recently finished thru hiking the Appalachian Trail with his girlfriend Hannah Murphy. Nick introduces his new cocktail invention based on the trail called the North Woods, and regales us with tales of naked hiker day, dubious hitchhiking, and trail food.
In 1995 travel writer Bill Bryson was living in the United States after residing in England for over twenty years and longed to reconnect with the country he once knew. Despite having little knowledge of hiking, camping, or the Great Outdoors he decided that an adventure on the 2,200 mile Appalachian Trail would be the best way to reacquaint himself with America. Not to be outdone in the inexperience department, Bryson was joined by his friend Stephen Katz, an overweight, out of shape, mercurial college friend, who he hadn't spoken to in over a decade. A Walk in the Woods chronicles their difficult and humorous attempt of one of America's great thru-hikes.In this episode Christine and Kyle discuss some of Bryson's anecdotes from the trail, his conversational writing style as well as his questionable strategy for completing the trail. They also dive into the life of the real "Stephen Katz" and gab about some of their own experiences on the Appalachian Trail.

On World Water Day, we talk water recycling with Stephen Katz, Market Development Manager at SUEZ Water Technologies & Solutions. The company, which built the Suez Canal in the 1860s is a leader in water recycling, particularly in industrial settings but also, increasingly, to augment local drinking water supplies. More than 2.7 billion people around the world experience water scarcity each year and climate change, along with growing human and farm animal populations, stresses available freshwater, which accounts for only 3% of the water on the planet. Katz explains how SUEZ processes wastewater and post-industrial water to return potable supplies for human use. In Morro Bay, Calif., the company is replenishing groundwater supplies with water recovered from the city's wastewater treatment facility -- the program provides drinkable water and prevents land subsidence (sinking) due to depleted aquifers. Katz also discusses the growing interest in water as a tradable commodity and the potential for higher prices as regions compete to acquire drinking water and increase to their industrial output. The World Bank projects that water shortages could reduce global GDP by as much as 6% by 2050. Low-income countries, which currently use only 8% of their water supply for industrial purposes, compared to high-income countries' 59% will struggle to grow their economies because of water shortages. Water desalination, another SUEZ line of business, is an energy-intensive answer in some parts of the world, but recycling remains the most accessible option.

Agency owners are scrambling to take advantage of the CARES Act, and in particular the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans but there’s a lot we don’t know because there’s a lot that is not set in stone. There is a total lack of clarity around this how the PPP works – from application all the way through repayment and potential forgiveness. The 800-page act says one thing and the SBA says another. As I describe it in my conversation with guest Stephen Katz, we are repairing the plane while we’re flying it. Stephen is the chair of the business practice of Peckar & Abramson, a law firm in New York City with offices in 10 US cities and affiliates in 14 countries across the globe. I asked Stephen to joins us because of his decades of experience working with the SBA and other government programs designed to serve businesses. He’s spent the better part of a month interacting directly with the SBA, Treasury Department and his legal peers to try to wrap their arms around the CARES Act and specifically the PPP loan. I knew he‘d provide some answers so that we agency owners can plan for the future and protect what they have now. It is important to know what you’re getting into. And as details get locked down, we’ll have Stephen back to help us navigate this murky waters. A big thank you to our podcast’s presenting sponsor, White Label IQ. “...this is an unprecedented time for everybody. We all have our expertise in different areas and our experience in different areas and now's the time to be talking about our approaches, what we're doing, sharing our ideas, and really, really working together to try to get through this and to put practices and patients in the best positions possible.” It is business as unusual right now. Patients everywhere have been told that treatments have been put on hold and have been left in limbo. Thankfully, there has been a surge in interest in using digital technology to keep some semblance of normal for patients seeking treatment. Thanks to applications such as Zoom, clinics are able to conduct consults or relay testing results. And thanks to new innovations making consents available online, clinics are able to get patients ready for treatment, while remaining in good legal-standing. On this special episode of Inside Reproductive Health, Griffin talks to Jeff Issner and Taylor Stein of EngagedMD, a company that has developed an application that not only provides digital consent forms, but also goes the extra mile in patient education. Dr. Stephen Katz of REI Protect joins in the discussion, offering his perspective on risk mitigation and ensuring your practice reduces liability in any way it can during these unprecedented times. Art in its many forms-visual, theatrical, musical-is undoubtedly inspirational, and that inspiration is powerful. In Hampton Roads, community service and outreach is a driving force for several creative projects. On this edition of HearSay, award-winning Virginian-Pilot photographer Stephen Katz joins us to tell us about his project, "Shoot for Good" and how you can participate. Plus, we'll hear how community outreach plays a big part in the Virginia Stage Company's current staging of "The Diary of Anne Frank," and its overall mission from artistic director, Chris Hanna. And then, we'll celebrate 15 years of community arts with the Virginia Arts Festival, which what built upon the very notion of giving back, with executive director (and accomplished musician), Rob Cross.
