In this episode we speak with Bible scholar Dan McClellan about one of Christianity's most foundational claims: the divinity of Jesus. Drawing from his deep engagement with biblical scholarship, Dan invites us to consider whether the Bible actually presents Jesus as God in the way later doctrine insists. He explores how early Christian texts reflect diverse and competing understandings of Jesus's nature, and how ideas about divinity were shaped as much by evolving theology and politics as by the biblical text itself. Following the interview, Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Anna Robinson reflect on their own relationship with Jesus's divinity, and what it means to engage these questions with both intellectual honesty and spiritual openness. Interview starts at 15m 22s If you'd like to sponsor Tim on his 165 Mito Miles in May challenge, go to his GoFundMe page. In this special Easter meditation, writer and storyteller Gareth Higgins invites us into a deeper experience of reality—one rooted not in fear, despair, or division, but in love. With characteristic warmth and clarity, Gareth reflects on the challenges of our time: overwhelming empathy, collapsing certainties, and the temptation to believe that love is unrealistic. Yet through all this, he offers a simple but radical reframing—what if we are not only capable of love, but made of it? Drawing from spiritual wisdom traditions and personal insight, Gareth gently calls us to see ourselves and one another as we truly are: not broken beyond repair, not merely surviving—but bearers of gifts and just a little lower than the angels. Following Gareth's reflection, Anna Robinson leads us in a gentle stilling and examen practice, inviting us to pause, listen, and carry the meditation into our lived experience. Join us for a thought-provoking conversation with Dr. Helen Bond, Professor of Christian Origins and New Testament, as we explore the complex relationship between the Jesus of history and the Christ of faith. Helen unpacks the challenges of reconstructing Jesus' life from the Gospels, revealing how early Christian communities shaped his story. We discuss the historical context of Jesus' teachings, the differing portrayals across the Gospels, and what scholars can confidently say about his life and mission. Finally, we ask: is it possible to build a meaningful spirituality around the historical Jesus, separate from traditional Christian doctrine? Following the interview Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Anna Robinson ponder what all this means for the evolution of their faith and role the historical Jesus might play in it. In this episode, we sit down with biblical scholar Dr. Jennifer Bird to explore the Bible's complex portrayals of marriage and sexuality. Jennifer shares her journey from conservative evangelicalism to a more nuanced, humanistic perspective, and helps us unpack, among other things, Jesus and Paul's lack of enthusiasm for marriage, the Bible's limitations as a guide for healthy relationships, and the risks of putting Jesus on a pedestal. After the interview, Nomad hosts Tim Nash and Anna Robinson reflect on their own experiences with ‘biblical' teachings around sex and marriage, and consider whether Jesus really offers an antidote to the Bible's more problematic stances. In this special devotional episode, anabaptist, anarchist and animist Noel Moules explores the profound mystery of incarnation from his unique perspective as a Christian animist. He considers the interconnectedness of all things—seeing the sacredness in both creation and spirit, and how personhood extends beyond humanity to the entire cosmos. Noel reflects on how Jesus' life exemplifies this mystery, offering a vision of restoration and hope. Noel invites us to reconsider the divine presence in every aspect of reality and challenges us to deepen our relationship with the world around us. Following Noel's reflection, Anna Robinson creates a contemplative space for us to reflect on and experience this incarnational understanding of spirituality. “You have to be a cold bitch or an easy lay”. Those words of advice were given nearly 50 years ago by the boss of a London-based shipping company to a young woman starting out her maritime career. That young woman went on to become one of the three founders of Women's International Shipping and Trading Association, known as Wista. The story was recounted at a Wista event in London back in 2019 to celebrate the progress made across the industry in diversity and inclusion. Since then, May 18 has been assigned as the International Day for Women in Maritime by the International Maritime Organisation. Women represent a large pool of talent that's been overlooked, according to Karine Langlois from the IMO. “Even just with my own observation, being at IMO for well over a decade now, the parity in the delegations that come to the IMO meetings have far more women in them,” she said. “We used sometimes to see and even for more technical meetings, we used to see men-only delegations, and now you see sometimes even entire delegations represented by women, so that is definitely a positive change even for us here at the IMO.” Anna Robinson, partner at London law firm Watson Farley & Williams said women are well represented in maritime law, and diversity differs when comparing offshore and onshore roles. “When you look at the targets, which the International Chamber of Shipping advocates, they're very conservative, which I think highlights the scale of the problem,” she said. “In three years, they're looking at 12%, in 20 years, we're still only looking at 25% (of the workforce). “I think it's right that they are realistic targets. And I think it's right to recognise there is no silver bullet. This is a long term issue. But the important point is that it needs to stay on the agenda for change. It can't just be a fashionable topic, across three or five years, we've got to keep the conversation going, which is why it's brilliant that we're having this discussion today.”
In Part 1 we talked about deconstruction being an intellectual, emotional, and relational process. In this episode we offer thoughts, practices, and encouragement especially for parents, pastors, and friends to those who are deconstructing. We also consider the doubts and failures in Jesus' disciples, and how Jesus orchestrated circumstances perfectly to expose his disciples' limits and offer opportunities for transformation. Therefore, in the disciple-making process we can expect major doubts and failures. As disciple-makers and spiritual leaders, what systems and environments do we create that either incentivize our disciples to hide their fears and doubts or welcome them as a natural part of the journey? Big idea: build muscles that help us hold space for doubt, questions, and dissonance; be curious; create safe places; let go of control; be a loving presence Join Ryan and Lewie and our guests, Jeff Hayden and Anna Robinson, around the table as they share their thoughts and personal experiences with this important and relevant topic. What is deconstruction? What is it not? Why does it happen? Is it good or bad? What is it about our cultural moment that contributes to deconstruction? What do I do if I (or a loved one) feel an internal dissonance about God, the Bible, church, my faith, etc? What is the role of questions, doubt, and resistance in discipleship? In this Christmas devotional podcast, Dr Christena Cleveland explores the symbolism of the Black Madonna. In times of dysregulation and uncertainty, the Black Madonna has provided Christena a powerful symbol of love, nurture and connection, allowing her to move from a spirituality of fear to one of trust. Following Christena's refection, Anna Robinson creates a contemplative space for us to more deeply reflect and experience this womb-like space of safety and trust. Jay Hulme then reads a poem about Julian of Norwich, the 14th Century mystic who experienced a radical connection with the divine feminine. Following on from our conversation with Matthew Fox, in this episode Anna Robinson leads us in a meditation that explores the spirituality of the remarkable 14th Century mystic Julian of Norwich. Anna gives us a short introduction to Julian and how she lived through a deadly global pandemic, suffered loss and yet still wholeheartedly pursued God, and received visions that Christians are still pondering nearly seven centuries later. Anna then uses a breathwork technique to help us to become present and more relaxed and then leads us in a lectio divina mediation based around some of Julian’s words. Anna then finishes with a short examen and closing prayer. Anna produces meditations like this each month. Anna Robinson is a blogger, book enthusiast, and the owner of Listen Up and Read. She loves being able to fulfill her ardency for reading and provide in-depth book, audiobook, and podcast reviews, and NOW small business reviews to deliver valuable insights and inspiration.Anna works full-time as a Healthcare Privacy Consultant, is a mother to two young children, and when she’s not focused on those things, she is an avid gardener, has appeared as a guest on numerous podcasts, and is always scoping out new small businesses to write reviews on.Anna, is here to discuss two very timely topics. With a year of challenging transitions, Anna is here to first discuss how she has gotten through a year that included a separation from her husband of 10 years, moving homes, starting a new job AND COVID-19 with 2 small children...homeschooling...etc. The second issue Anna is here to discuss is anti-racism. It's a conversation I've wanted to have, but like so many who are sympathetic and outraged, but are aware we don't fully understand how the black community truly feels, I've been hesitant to say much out of fear of saying the wrong thing. Today, we are discussing how Anna feels about the current events and what she'd like to see individuals doing to help change the culture and eliminate the problem of racism in our country. Racism. We like to think that it doesn't exist anymore. I mean, it's 2020 right? Racism surely isn't continuing on, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, racism impacts so much of our daily lives that we often don't even acknowledge it. Anna reached out to share hard truths, her emotions, processing through such unfair and unjust situations. What I love about Anna's approach to life is her ability to hold both parts- This is hard and traumatic. AND, I can do something about it in my own community. Her ability to make change in her own community and desire to help others is admirable. In this meditation Anna Robinson reflects on our struggles with fear, anxiety and distress. She looks at how Jesus himself felt great fear, particularly at this time of Easter. Then, drawing on the wisdom of James Finley, Anna leads us through a stilling exercise and meditation where we can bring our deepest fears and distress to Jesus. Through this we hope together we can find freedom from our experience of the tyranny of fear. David Blower compliments the meditation with original music and ambience. In this contemplation, Anna Robinson considers the significance of acknowledging how we are feeling in these uncertain and unsettling times. She considers the importance of kindness and compassion to others and ourselves, recognising our shared human experiences. Anna then leads us into a stilling exercise to help us become fully present, after which she guides us a Loving-Kindness meditation that fosters feelings of compassion and kindness and enables us to feel more connected to those we love and those around us during this time of isolation. David Blower compliments the meditation with original music and ambience. If you want a meditation like this one each month, then visit either our PayPal or Patreon membership page.
A New Zealand-made music video about a family in lockdown has become an online sensation - and Kiwis are being challenged to make their own versions of it.The "Family Lockdown Boogie" is the catchy tune that describes life in the same bubble as your immediate family. It was created by Wellingtonian Jack Buchanan, who performs the song with his mum, dad and sister at their Wellington home where they are in isolation. The choreography, by Anna Robinson, is complete with awkward dad moves and all.The video has gone viral across different social media platforms. It has had more than 250,000 views on one Facebook page alone - Wellington LIVE - in just 13 hours.Even Finance Minister Grant Robertson shared it to his page, with the caption "Love this"."Great fun to see and a great time for families to re connect at home... many just don't get the time in recent years, often due to both parents having to work... Make the most of it because this can and will bring lifelong memories...Hopefully really happy ones, even though they came from a crisis situation. Arohanui," one person commented."That is brilliant- and I bet they had such fun doing it... anyone else thinking about all the 'bloopers' and 'that's not right' filming that may have gone on," another person said."That actually was one of the best things I've seen for a while because they totally don't look like the type to do this! Goes to show, can't judge a book by its cover," another Facebook user commented.New Zealanders everywhere are now challenging each other to recreate their own version of the "Lockdown Boogie".The country has been in alert level 4 for a week and a half.Covid19.govt.nz: The Government's official Covid-19 advisory website
Rather than an interview based episode, we felt these strange times required something a little more meditative. Each month for the last year Anna Robinson has been producing some wonderful meditations for our patrons. So we asked her to produce a short series for our main podcast feed, called Meditations for Isolation. In this meditation, Anna reminds us we are not alone in finding ourselves weighed down by worry and concerns. Anna will lead us in contemplating divine presence and peace. We will then be led on an imaginative journey where we are invited to acknowledge our fears and concerns and give them to God. We will then be invited to rest in this peace and presence and receive what it is we need at this time. David Blower compliments the meditation with original music. If you want a meditation like this one each month, then visit either our PayPal or Patreon membership page.
