Happy Thanksgiving from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today, for our 150th(!) episode, we are thankful for Ridley Scott! As Gladiator II reigns supreme at the box office, our B-Sides today include Legend, Matchstick Men, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and The Last Duel. Our esteemed guest Maria Lewis - “best-selling author, screenwriter, film curator and pop culture etymologist currently based in Australia - is back! Much is discussed over two-and-a-half glorious hours. Ridler's pioneering Apple Ad; his recent breakneck pace as filmmaker; his movies being on Australian television constantly; and his production empire. Maria laments her experience watching Legend for the first time while Dan and Conor celebrate the film's importance in their childhood. Ridley's fascination with death comes up, as do the competing Christopher Columbus film projects in 1992. There's talk of his legacy and Ridley's consideration of it. The “best intentions” of The Last Duel are discussed at length (name a woman!), as are the top-notch performances and the disappointing box office. Dan also fumbles over a tacit defense of G.I. Jane. It's embarrassing! Be sure to give us a follow on social at @TFSBSide. Also enter our giveaways, get access to our private Slack channel, and support new episodes by becoming a Patreon contributor.

Issue 44 of the monthly magazine podcast for the discerning film nerd continues with a very Ridley Scott themed episode. Our Classic is his feminist road movie Thelma & Louise, our Hidden Gem is his less heralded debut The Duellists, The One That Got Away explores how Kubrick (one of Scott's idols) failed to get a Napoleon film off the ground 50 years before Sir Ridley made his version, and our Remake Hatewatch asks why Exodus Gods and Kings bothered to try and revive the Moses story. As a special treat at the end we suggest a remake to fix all the flaws in Prometheus. The previous parts of Issue 44 are out now: Double Reel Monthly and the Penalty Shootout Film Quiz. Next week we close out this issue with a Ridley Scott-themed Big Conversation.

The legendary director of Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, American Gangster, and.....Exodus: Gods and Kings (!) has returned to deliver another historical epic.  Oscar-nominated legend Ridley Scott (also Alien, Thelma & Louise) directs the story of Napoleon Bonaparte, the renowned French King/General who took Europe by storm just over 200 years ago....and he's played by recent Oscar-winner Joaquin Phoenix.  His beloved wife/empress Josephine is also played by recent Oscar-nominee Vanessa Kirby. The narrative takes us through Napoleon's tumultuous relationship with Josephine and also through several of the most memorable battles in which he participated....but does it cover his WHOLE story?  And does that even matter?  Sir Ridley takes us back through history in a manner only he can.   Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

The boys are going to the beginning of the project timeline for this week's episode as they tackle a pair of movies from 100 years ago in 1923. First, Jake Ziegler assigns Brad Garoon the Ten Commandments, but not the version of the movie you're thinking of. Though this one is also directed by Cecil B. DeMille, it was a silent film. The fellas discuss what feels like a bait and switch, as the biblical story of Moses only takes up the first 45 minutes of this 2.5-hour film. The rest is made up of Christian moralizing and a cheesy plot. They discuss how the movie compares to DeMille's remake, the Dreamworks animated retelling of the story, and Ridley Scott's modern take. Jake assigns Brad Safety Last, Harold Lloyd's iconic comedy about a poor schmuck trying to make it big in the city. They talk about Lloyd's place in the silent movie comedy pantheon alongside Charlie Chaplin and Buster Keaton, and how comedy like this transcends time. Jake also has a meltdown over John Turturro's religious heritage.  Other movies discussed in this episode: The Ten Commandments (1956), The Prince of Egypt (1998), Alexander (2004), Kingdom of Heaven (2005), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 (2010), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014), Killers of the Flower Moon (2023), Napoleon (2023).

Are we excited to see Aaron Paul? Does this movie have a very simple plot that somehow takes nearly three hours to tell? Why are we disappointed with the parting of the sees scene? Why is Colin excited over one scene in particular? And how long did it take Ben to fall asleep in this movie? The plague narratives are some of the most dramatic scenes in the whole Bible. They've been powerfully and visually depicted in films like The Ten Commandments, The Prince of Egypt, and Exodus: Gods & Kings. But what we often miss in these dramatic re-tellings is that all of the plagues are intended to answer one simple question from Pharoah: “Who is Yahweh that I should obey him?” The answer is that Yahweh is the unique, natural, and saving Judge over all the earth. He is the one apart from whom everything else falls back into darkness. He is the one to whom we must all eventually give an account. And He is the one who ultimately provides forgiveness and mercy for those who trust in Him.

Today on the show we have Oscars® winning costume designer Janty Yates.Janty Yates has had a collaborative relationship with Ridley Scott since the great success of Gladiator in 2000, for which she won an Academy Award®, one of the eight Oscars® garnered by the film. She was also nominated for a BAFTA, a Golden Satellite and a Saturn Award. She has also had CDG nominations for De-lovely and for The Martian, a Golden Satellite nomination for De-lovely and a Goya nomination for Kingdom of Heaven.Yates is a frequent collaborator with Scott, having worked on thirteen films with him in addition to Gladiator, including: Hannibal (2001); Kingdom of Heaven (2005); American Gangster (2007); Body of Lies (2008); Robin Hood (2010), for which she received a Saturn Award nomination and her fourth Satellite Award nomination; Prometheus (2012), Exodus: Gods and Kings (2014),  and The Martian (2015). Her most recent films with Scott include the epic historical drama film The Last Duel and the biographical crime drama film House of Gucci, both released in 2021.The historical epic is a cinematic and thought-provoking drama set in the midst of the Hundred Years War that explores the ubiquitous power of men, the frailty of justice and the strength and courage of one woman willing to stand alone in the service of truth. Based on actual events, the film unravels long-held assumptions about France's last sanctioned duel between Jean de Carrouges and Jacques Le Gris, two friends turned bitter rivals.Carrouges is a respected knight known for his bravery and skill on the battlefield. Le Gris is a Norman squire whose intelligence and eloquence make him one of the most admired nobles in court. When Carrouges' wife, Marguerite, is viciously assaulted by Le Gris, a charge he denies, she refuses to stay silent, stepping forward to accuse her attacker, an act of bravery and defiance that puts her life in jeopardy. The ensuing trial by combat, a grueling duel to the death, places the fate of all three in God's hands. The film is based on Eric Jager's book "The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal, and Trial by Combat in Medieval France."It is produced and directed by Ridley Scott, Kevin J. Walsh ("Manchester by the Sea"), Jennifer Fox ("Nightcrawler"), Nicole Holofcener, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck with Kevin Halloran ("Ford v Ferrari"), Drew Vinton ("Promised Land"), Madison Ainley ("Justice League") serving as executive producers. You can watch The Last Duel through popular video-on-demand (VOD) retailers like Amazon Prime Video, Vudu, Apple TV (iTunes), Microsoft Movies, and YouTube.Enjoy my conversation with Janty Yates.

Career Q&A with Joel Edgerton. Moderated by Jenelle Riley, Variety. Joel Edgerton currently stars as John Connolly in BLACK MASS alongside Johnny Depp. He was honored for his performance as Tom Buchanan in “The Great Gatsby,” Baz Luhrmann's 2013 screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic novel. Edgerton won Australian Film Institute (AFI) and Film Critics Circle of Australia (FCCA) Awards and was nominated for an Australian Film Critics Association Award, all in the category of Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton more recently directed, wrote, produced and starred in the psychological thriller “The Gift,” also starring Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall. The independent film delivered tremendously, with a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score and an opening weekend of $12 million. He also starred opposite Christian Bale in Ridley Scott's biblical epic “Exodus: Gods and Kings.” Edgerton's upcoming credits include starring roles in Jeff Nichols' sci-fi thriller “Midnight Special,” and Gavin O'Connor's Western “Jane Got a Gun,” with Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor. He is currently reunited with Nichols on the fact-based drama “Loving,” about the couple whose challenge to Virginia's interracial marriage ban led to a landmark Supreme Court case. In 2012, Edgerton gained international attention with his role in Kathryn Bigelow's award winning true-life drama “Zero Dark Thirty.” That same year, he starred opposite Jennifer Garner in Peter Hedges' “The Odd Life of Timothy Green,” and in “Wish You Were Here,” winning an FCCA Award for Best Actor. His other recent film credits include the drama “Felony,” which he also wrote and produced and which premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival; Gavin O'Connor's drama “Warrior,” with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte; the horror thriller “The Thing,” the prequel to John Carpenter's cult classic; and David Michôd's “Animal Kingdom,” for which he won AFI and FCCA Awards for Best Supporting Actor. Edgerton had earlier starred in such films as “The Square,” directed by his brother Nash Edgerton; the Australian feature “Acolytes”; “Whisper,” with Josh Holloway”; the crime thriller “Smokin' Aces”; the drag comedy “Kinky Boots”; and George Lucas's blockbusters “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones” and “Episode III – Revenge of the Sith,” playing the young Owen Lars, who would become Uncle Owen to Luke Skywalker. He also lent his voice to Zack Snyder's animated feature “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole” and the Oscar nominated animated short “The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello,” performing the title role. Born in New South Wales, Australia, Edgerton attended the Nepean Drama School in western Sydney. He went on to appear in various stage productions, most notably with the Sydney Theatre Company in “Blackrock,” “Third World Blues” and “Love for Love”; and the Bell Shakespeare, where he appeared in “Henry IV.” In 2009, he returned to the stage to star as Stanley Kowalski, alongside Cate Blanchett's Blanche DuBois, in the Sydney Theatre Company's acclaimed production of “A Streetcar Named Desire.” The pair also performed the play to sold-out audiences at the Kennedy Center in November of that year, followed by a run at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) in December. On Australian television, he is known for playing the role of Will in the long-running series “The Secret Life of Us,” for which he was nominated for an AFI Award.

And all the people responded together, “We will do everything the Lord has commanded.” So Moses brought the people's answer back to the Lord. 2) THE PEOPLE COMMITTED TO GOD - TO FOLLOW GOD - TO BECOME A NEW CREATION - FOR THE SAKE OF THE WORLD EXODUS 32:1-5 When the people saw how long it was taking Moses to come back down the mountain, they gathered around Aaron. “Come on,” they said, “make us some gods who can lead us. We don't know what happened to this fellow Moses, who brought us here from the land of Egypt.” So Aaron said, “Take the gold rings from the ears of your wives and sons and daughters, and bring them to me.” All the people took the gold rings from their ears and brought them to Aaron. Then Aaron took the gold, melted it down, and molded it into the shape of a calf. When the people saw it, they exclaimed, “O Israel, these are the gods who brought you out of the land of Egypt!” Aaron saw how excited the people were, so he built an altar in front of the calf. Then he announced, “Tomorrow will be a festival to the Lord!” 3) WHEN DO I TRY TO MAKE GOD MORE CONTROLLABLE? 4) HOW DO I LET GOD BE GOD?

We have a conversation with our friend Kirsten about the fine line between edginess and integrity when you are creating art as a Christian, and in the middle of it all we end up talking about many other tangential topics, which is mainly the reason for the length of this episode. We also share a bit about what the Christian response to tattoos and piercings should be (one of Kirsten's favorite topics), cause, you know, body art. We also referenced a lot of things in this episode, so bear with me... God’s Not Dead: We talked a bit about this movie and the fact that it really wasn't all that great, but we didn't get into the specifics because someone already did that for us (and he did a much better job then we could have). So check out this video! Son of God: We talked about this movie. And we don't recommend seeing it. But just in case you wanted to know more about it... Exodus: Gods and Kings: We also don't recommend seeing this movie. At least if you get angry at horrible inaccurate movies about Biblical events. Noah: Or this one. Noah Score: But if you like film scores (like Caleb), you should check out this. Oh, and just for reference, the story about the woman staking the man's temple is found in Judges 4: 21. Just in case you wanted to know... Thou Shalt Not Judge?: Here's a fantastic video explaining the Bible's actual views on judging.
