RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey is joined again by Vidar Hjardeng MBE, Inclusion and Diversity Consultant for ITV News across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands for the next in his regular Connect Radio theatre reviews. This week Vidar was reviewing the stage adaptation of Ken Loach's 2016 award-winning film, ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' by Comedian, Playwright and Actor Dave Johns who also played the lead role of Daniel in Ken Loach's film as the production visited the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. Professional Audio Describer Jonathan Nash provided the live description for both the dry run and the audio described performance at the Birmingham Repertory Theatre. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is adapted by Dave Johns from the film directed by Ken Loach, written by Paul Laverty, and produced by Rebecca O'Brien for Sixteen Films. Dan is a carpenter. A Geordie through and through. Just on the mend after a heart attack. Katie has just arrived from London. Finally got a council house for her and the kids. A fresh start. ‘I, Daniel Blake' is one of the most important stories of a generation. A glimpse behind the headlines and the stark reality of what happens when the political system is stacked against you. With 14.5 million people living in poverty in the UK, this is not fiction. It is reality. A touching and vital story of how people come together in the face of adversity and how sometimes creating a family to support you just isn't enough. The show is adapted for stage by Dave Johns who played Daniel Blake in the award winning 2016 film. Presented by Northern Stage, Birmingham Rep, ETT, Oldham Coliseum and tiny dragon Productions, in association with Cardboard Citizens. Age Guideline 12+ More about the tour of ‘I DANIEL BLAKE' can be found on either the northern Stage website - https://northernstage.co.uk/whats-on/i-daniel-blake-2/ Or the English Touring Theatre Company's website - https://ett.org.uk/our-work/i-daniel-blake/ Image: RNIB Connect Radio Bright Green 20th Anniversary Logo
We're talking about the first ever stage adaptation of Ken Loach's and Paul Laverty's multi-award winning 2016 film I, Daniel Blake. The production, which is touring the UK, opened at Northern Stage Newcastle to rave critical reviews and passionate audience reactions. Dave Johns, who adapted it for the stage, played Daniel in the original film, winning Best Actor at the British Independent Awards and Best Newcomer at the Empire Awards for his performance. Davey Nellist, who plays Daniel in this new stage version, is best known for his roles as Mike Stamford in Sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and more recently in the TV series Stonehouse with Matthew McFadden. Dave and Davey tell us how the play is deliberately being hailed as non-fiction and a very real story about poverty and homelessness in Newcastle today. The city had one foodbank in 2016 but now has seven. Dave also tells us how he landed the part in the movie, having been a comedian and formerly a bricklayer. I, Daniel Blake tours till mid-November to Birmingham, Manchester, Exeter, Liverpool, Durham, Leeds, Oxford, Edinburgh, Stratford, Northampton, Coventry and Guildford, before returning to Northern Stage in September. The Liverpool Biennial, the UK's largest contemporary visual arts festival, begins this weekend. Arts journalist Laura Robertson reviews, and the curator of the biennial, Khanyisile Mbongwa, discuss coming up with this year's theme – uMoya: The Sacred Return of Lost things – which reflects on Liverpool's history as a slave port but also provides a sense of hope and joy. Nobel Prize-winning Italian playwright Dario Fo was famous for plays that careered between farce and current affairs. He wrote his most successful plays during Italy's years of economic crisis in the 1970s, and there's been an upsurge in productions of them in the UK this year. Playwrights Deborah McAndrew and Tom Basden discuss their respective adaptations of They Don't Pay? We Won't Pay! and Accidental Death of an Anarchist. For Dave Johns, the lead role in Ken Loach's multi-award winning film, I, Daniel Blake, marked his debut as a film actor. His performance as a man trapped and impoverished in the Catch-22 of the benefits system was admired by many. Now Dave has adapted the film for the stage. It opened at Northern Stage in Newcastle and begins a nationwide tour next week. He talks to Nick Ahad retelling the story of the film in a new way. Presenter: Nick Ahad Presenter: Ekene Akalawu

Recorded live in front of a sell-out crowd at Newcastle's Northern Stage theatre we're celebrating International Women's Day and taking a close look at how the vocabulary we use changes when talking about women as opposed to men. After delving into some canny Geordie phrases and highlighting the historic work of a local unsung linguistic hero, we discover why some words, such as bubbly and airhead, are only ever used when describing women. And we look at the journeys of words like harlot, buxom, and hussy and how, over the years, their positive origins have been cruelly adapted. A Somethin' Else production. There are forty-two of us now, not including the mermaids. When you're a Wreckling, you mainly spend your days squabbling, eating and planning adventures. Oh, and Wrecklings also carry out wreckings, which is how we got our name...Washed up as a baby beside a remote lighthouse and raised by a mermaid, Alpha Lux was the first foundling at Haven Point. Now the lighthouse is a ramshackle home for any disabled person who needs somewhere to belong.Looting from passing ships to make a living, they call themselves the Wrecklings, and for the children of Haven Point life is spent adventuring on the wild shore (and getting into trouble with the grown-ups). But when Alpha spots a strange light up on the headland, she realizes that her beloved family are in danger of being discovered by Outsiders. With their home under threat, the Wrecklings must decide what kind of future they want...and what they're willing to do to get it.

Northern Stage's Associate Director's Mark Calvert and Louie Ingham chat to Curious Monkey's Director Amy Golding about 'HERE', a powerful new play about finding sanctuary in the unlikeliest of places. This podcast is being launched on the day where ordinarily, we would be holding a post-show discussion with Amy so instead, we've woven it together into this forty-five minute podcast, including beautiful music from the show by composer, Niroshini Thambar. Carol Dunne is the Producing Artistic Director of Northern Stage, regional non-profit LORT-D professional theater company in Vermont with a mission to change lives, one story at a time. Now in her sixth season, she brings a wealth of experience from her former position as Producing Artistic Director of the New London Barn Playhouse, a company she transformed from a semi-professional summer stock theater to one of the most successful summer theaters in New England. Since 2013, Dunne and her team have overseen the $9.2 million Campaign for Northern Stage, which culminated in the opening of the theater’s new home, the state of the art Barrette Center for the Arts. During Carol’s tenure, she has introduced the development of new plays to the Northern Stage repertoire with New Works Now, an annual new play festival, and directed many times on the mainstage. In 2017, Dunne received a $1.25 million grant from the Pussycat Foundation to further women in the American theater, which she used to start the BOLD Theater Women’s Leadership Circle, a cohort of five professional leaders run by women to support female artists and leaders in the field. Dunne also serves as an award winning Senior Lecturer at Dartmouth College. She joins us today from White River Junction, Vermont.

The latest production from acclaimed theatre company RashDash, Future Bodies, has been produced in collaboration with Unlimited Theatre and HOME Manchester as a trailblazer event for the 2018 Manchester Science Festival. What does it mean to have and to be a body? As we increasingly fuse our biological brains with technology, at what point do we stop being human? Does it even matter? During rehearsals at HOME, BTG Editor David Chadderton spoke to RashDash co-founder Helen Goalen, who is co-directing the production, about the show, how it was created and the ideas behind it. Future Bodies will be at HOME Manchester from 28 September to 13 October 2018 before touring to Northern Stage in Newcastle from 16 to 18 October and the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield on 19 October. On 20 February 2018, regional theatre director, artistic director and chief executive John Blackmore died at the age of 77. He was chief executive at Bolton's Octagon Theatre for 12 years, but he also put together a plan to save Liverpool’s Everyman and Playhouse theatres, was Artistic Director of Manchester’s Library Theatre in the 1960s, founded the company that became Northern Stage in Newcastle, was one of the founders of Out of Joint, was director or artistic director of Midlands Arts Centre (now mac) in Birmingham, The Dukes in Lancaster, Warwick Arts Centre and the English Shakespeare Company and chief executive of Leicester Haymarket. In tribute, this episode is an interview by BTG editor David Chadderton with John from 2011 looking back on his impressive and varied career in theatre, followed by some reflections in 2018 from Mark Babych, now Artistic Director at Hull Truck but previously Artistic Director at the Octagon for ten years, on his time working with John.
In this episode, we look at two very different non-pantomime versions of the Snow White story that can be seen this Christmas. Natasha Holmes is artistic director of Yorkshire-based Tell Tale Hearts, a company that creates highly visual participatory theatre for children and families based on ideas from the children themselves. Just before rehearsals began, Natasha talked to us about a version of the popular fairy tale that features Yorkshire miners as well as aerial performance from outdoor theatre specialists Pif-Paf. The production is at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield from 11 to 27 December 2015. Newcastle-based balletLORENT is currently touring its new dance version of Snow White created by the same team as last year's Rapunzel.
