You'd think that as adults we'd be past the angst and awkwardness of making friends. But if anything, making new friends get harder as we get older. There's less time and more responsibility. And while we may have more choice over who we spend our time with, it feels like there are few opportunities to actually bond with people now that we're not forced to be around them five days a week.I sat down with my good friend Janani to talk through the challenges involved, and the tips we've picked up from our own experiences. J is a doctor (!!!), so instead of following her on socials, send her good vibes for making it through a medical degree and the last two years as a medical professional. She deserves it! As two people who've moved around a bit in our adult lives, we've had our fair share of awkward conversations and failures to connect. But we've also managed to surround ourselves with great people, and embrace our awkwardness (sort of). We delve into unconventional ways and places to make friends, actually having that all important coffee catch-up, and a quick refresher on how to check your moles for melanoma.I hope you have a laugh, and get some tips on how to branch out and find some new people to enrich your life with. Or just feel less self-conscious about that silly thing you said (because no one else is thinking about it). Is our search for love making us bad people? Is liking dogs a personality trait? Why don't dating apps have Clippy? In this episode I team up with Maddie and Nic for fun, light hearted banter and serious philosophical questions. Maddie and Nic host WTF is Happening podcast, where they talk about all things pop-culture and their sometimes valid opinions about it. You can find them on Instagram here.Nic is the personification of an entertainment industry Wikipedia. More than a lovely human, he's a witty, iconic vibe. Maddie is the owner of Harness Creation, a ‘do it yourself' studio for hire where creators of all mediums can make excellent content. You can check it out on Instagram, or head to her website to find out more about the services and spaces on offer. Some of the things we talk about are: the pettiest reasons we've rejected someone, if we should feel worse for making snap judgments about someone's looks or the things they say, and the morality of ghosting. It was one of the most fun recording sessions I've had, and it shows. I hope this episode makes you laugh, and gives you more nuanced perspectives on our modern quest for love (and the ridiculousness of it all). Ever since Brené Brown's TEDtalk, we've been waking up to the fact that vulnerability is the key to authenticity, connection, stronger relationships, and personal growth. An in-depth discussion about the courage and power of vulnerability with a member of the armed forces is perhaps not a typical combination, but that's exactly what this is. My guest Dylan's candour, humour, and insightful commentary brought so many layers to this episode and I cannot wait for you to hear it.CAPT Dylan Conway is an Infantry Officer in the Australian army, writer, and founder and CEO of the charity brothersnbooks which has a beautiful community on Instagram and Facebook. He encourages reading as a form of meditation, self growth and resilience after suffering an injury that placed him in bed for 14 months. Oh, and he's now a publisher too! His poetry book “In Plain Sight“ by Shaun Austin is out now, and already a best seller in multiple categories. Dylan and I talk about what vulnerability is, the negative connotations, how it enriches our lives, how we personally foster it in ourselves, and about using it to connect with others. And of course, plenty of books. I hope that this conversation gives you good laughs, new ways of thinking, and some extra encouragement to bravely open yourself up. It's scary, but definitely worth it.Keep well,PaulaYou can find us on Instagram as @stumblethroughpod and on Facebook as Stumble Through Podcast. _______________________________________________________________________________________A That's Not Canon Productions podcast. Have you ever been driving, and suddenly wondered what you would do if you broke down? Now you don't have to! …. As much as you did before! This week's guest is Maddi “Macgyver” Römcke; an actor, writer, theatre creator and generally joyful human being who, to use a totally overused phrase: has a smile that lights up the room. You should absolutely follow her on Instagram to keep up with her work. The episode is full of Maddi's amazing car stories which definitely did not give me second-hand anxiety, and some helpful tips for what to keep in your car and how to deal with some basic problems. We talk about over-heating on the Gold Coast highway, how to change a tyre, the deep satisfaction of using jumper cables, and how you should never ever drive through flood waters. Hopefully this is helpful, but neither of us is a mechanic, so if you're ever unsure we advise that you call roadside assistance. It has been a very weird and upsetting few weeks, so I hope that you get to laugh with Maddi and I. Life is hard enough without us getting in our own way. And yet so often, that's exactly what we do. In this episode I chat with my first international guest, Stephenie Zamora, about why we do this and how we can stop doing it. Stephenie is an author and coach, business and marketing strategist, and founder of Stephenie Zamora Media—a digital media and production company, publishing house, and a full-service life-purpose development, branding, and online marketing boutique. Stephenie's work helps catalyse individuals on their healing and growth journeys so they can uncover the purpose of their path, step into who they're here to be, and do the work they're here to do.Together we unpack the root causes of self-sabotage and how it can manifest in our lives, core wounds (the negative beliefs that lead us to self-sabotage), and how we can overcome these old internal narratives to go after what we want. Stephenie and her team have just released three new books to help us live our purpose, cultivate more confidence, and make the impossible happen. You can find them and her other products on her website here. And you can check out her other work and adventures on Instagram, Youtube or Twitter.I hope this episode helps you understand yourself better. In it I reach for this quote by Aristotle: "knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom." Self-awareness is a cornerstone of growth, and pretty darn important as an adult. But just as vital is self-compassion. Often we are quicker to be compassionate with our friends and family than ourselves, even if we make the same mistakes. So I hope this episode helps you become kinder towards yourself too. You deserve it. Like many things in life, internships are not exactly like in the movies. Yes, it's a way to get experience as a young professional, or someone who wants to completely change careers/industries. But internships are mostly menial work, and sometimes we can question if they are worth it if there isn't a job at the end. In this episode, Gabbi Samadi and I share our stories (the good and the embarrassing) from both sides of the intern experience.Gabbi owns and operates Gabbi J Digital, a social media agency that empowers small businesses to be found, loved, and trusted online. She's also a university lecturer in Media and Communications, with a knack for incorporating trending and relatable topics into the learning experience (AKA using Taylor Swift and reality TV in lecture notes as much as possible). You can find Gabbi and her business on Instagram, Facebook, or any other social media app sharing handy marketing tips and explainers. Together we talk about long term vs. short term internships, what businesses are looking for, how to get the most out of the experience, and refer to the almighty FAIRWORK OMBUDSMAN for the legalities and how to spot if you're being taken advantage of. We hope this helps you feel less nervous about the whole thing, and more confident in finding ways to grow through the experience. Applying for jobs is not known for being fun, and anyone who says they've never had a mental breakdown while doing it is a liar. In this episode, Reegan Milne and I decode common buzz words, talk through red flags, and give tips on finding the “through-line” of what our potential new boss really wants from us.Reegan is a Brisbane based stand-up comic and a wise friend who brings depth and belly laughs to a really stressful topic. You can find him on Instagram and head to one of his gigs so you can laugh with him in person! We did a bunch of research for this episode, but it is largely drawn from our personal experiences and the things we wish we'd known sooner. This month we welcome back one of my favourite Brits, Dom Murphy! Dom is a freelance videographer, editor, film-maker and extraordinarily good human. My audio sounds like it's fueled by dial up internet while I work out the kinks of recording from home, but you can still hear everything clearly. Which is good because Dom has great advice for aspiring film creatives, recent grads, and freelancers. In this episode he breaks down terminology, talks us through the hierarchy of a film set, offers insights on how to crack your first proper jobs, and the ins and outs of freelancing. It is a super valuable episode for anyone who is serious about becoming part of the industry and I'm so grateful for Dom's time, insight, and candour. You can find him on Instagram and Facebook, or check out his website here. Starting is one thing, restarting is another. In this episode, I talk about getting back on track and explain last year's hiatus. I mean, it was the start of the pandemic so disruption was a given, but I really appreciate you listening so I wanted to give a bit more insight into why you stopped hearing from me for so long. And what better way than to link it to the process of getting back on our feet when we find ourselves not doing the things we know we should. We've all experienced something like it; odds are we'll be in this situation many times in life, so it's important to know how to get back into the swing of things. This is my first solo episode, so let me know what you think! Having a creative career is challenging at the best of times, let alone when there's a global pandemic cancelling everything. In this episode I got to talk to Laura Trenerry, a highly skilled theatre maker, comedian, performer, and one third of The Travelling Sisters. We chatted about finding the funny, funding and creating art, and the making of their comedy web-series. You can check out Laura's work by booking tickets to The Pageant here! It's on for two nights only and has new dates: February 4th and 5th 2022 at Comedy Republic. If you can't get to Melbourne, why not watch Meet The Mullets on youtube, and send Laura and the rest of The Travelling Sisters some love on Instagram and Facebook.Talking frankly with professional creatives is something that both inspires and reassures me, and I hope you feel the same after hearing the wisdom and practical tips Laura offers. WE ARE BACK!Second Album Syndrome is so 2020, and I am so very excited to finally share this episode with you all.I had the privilege of sitting down with Brent, Liam, and Nabeela from Vincents Accounting. They were kind enough to answer my many questions without a single eye-roll, and we delved into all the things people feel silly asking (like what IS a deduction?). We bust some common tax myths, have plenty of laughs, and talk about how COVID will impact our tax returns and what the Federal Budget means in practical terms.I'd love to hear what you think of it!Take care,Paula.......Had a chuckle? Hello folks!Just popping in to say that I’ve decided to make Stumble Through a monthly podcast so that it’s a more manageable commitment for me. As you know this podcast is something I love doing, and will continue to do, but I also need to be realistic with myself (and you!). So for the next while, Stumble Through will come out on the 16th of every month. The next episode will come out on September 16th. Keep your eyes open on our Instagram and Facebook because I’ll be asking you for the Things You’ve Never Said about taxes, making friends as an adult, and working a 9-5 as I prepare to record those episodes. Thank you, genuinely, if you’re reading this. I really appreciate each and every listen this not-so-little project of mine gets.Take care,Paula…..EPISODE NOTES: If the podcast has ever made you chuckle or feel less alone, please leave a review so that other people can find it! Just a quick fyi that this episode was recorded in a pre-Covid world, so if you notice the sound quality is extra great, and we make reference to some stuff that is currently not applicable, that’s why.In this episode I get to talk to Emily Readman about how to put your work out into the world. She has some great insights you can definitely apply to your field, so if you aren’t a writer, I think it’s still worth a listen.Em is a writer, student and playwright, and all around charismatic creator who runs an Instagram which balances aesthetic with substance. I love the mini Zine she recently published on her profile about how white allies can continue to support the BLM movement and continue ally work.Pre-order the third issue of Good Material Mag here to see her yes on a page.Keep well,PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Here is a quick list of some of Em’s biggest gems:- Read the publication or journal, read and support their stuff and do your research!- Identify places which are appropriate for you to submit. Find your kinda people, spaces where your values and experiences are reflected, respected, and even sought after.- See the value in your work but don’t take it too seriously.- Always be polite. Editors are people too!- Observe pitching etiquette and follow the style guide! Sure, you might think it cramps your style or somehow twists the meaning or integrity of your work. Here’s some tough love: get over it. Do not take your work so seriously. That could well result in your sending something which feels like a middle finger to the receiver.- In the same vein: submit in the way they want you to. It makes their job easier, and they may well decide that anyone who can’t be bothered to do the thing they ask will not be considered at all- Highball what you ask for, what’s the worst that could happen?- Exposure work can be useful, especially when you have a small portfolio......Rejection. Honestly I think we could do any entire episode on rejection, because it is something that will taste just as acrid no matter how old, talented, experienced or confident you are. Rejection will never not sting; the only thing to do is learn to manage it better so that we can grow further and faster. Here’s are two articles on just that from the Harvard Business Review and O Magazine......Having the confidence to submit is sometimes tricky. Statistically there WILL be people who resonate with what you write. There WILL be people who are looking for exactly what you are creating. But of course, it’s one thing to say that and another thing to believe it.Confidence and creativity have an interesting relationship dynamic, here’s a TED talk on how you can build your creative confidence by David Kelley......The phrase I was trying to remember is apparently from Kevin Durant, and it goes “Hard work beats talent when talent fails to work hard.”And that’s the thing about a good work ethic: it will carry you much farther in life than any fickle inspiration will. And if you match it with a lethal combination of self-care and discipline, you will be unstoppable......Cool zines and organisations we mentioned:Gulp is a Brisbane based, genre-based magVoice Works Is a national literary journalVis Ink, AKA Visible Ink is a Brisbane City Council funded youth hub which enables young creatives to access materials, tools and a community which promotes growth in the arts sector at a grass roots level.Good Material Mag is a Brisbane based mag.....You can find Em’s work here:Pre-order the third issue of Good Material Mag here so you can read her work! The aftermath of the most recent Australian Bushfires for Kos magazineOn the desire to edit herself for Glass MagazineTalking about domestic violence for Glass MagazineAn interview with Em for Good Material MagAnd here she is talking about Glass magazine, which is QUT’s student run magazine. In this episode actor and creator Ben Warren returns to the podcast with just as much warmth and wit as before, with double the insights. He also brings EXCITING NEWS!International, intense, inside, in-tertainment; these are just some of the “i” words which describe the first ever MonologueAthon! The MonologueAthon is a 24-hour live-stream event in support of The Actors’ and Entertainers’ Benevolent Fund, which will be hosted on May 29th AEST. Actors will be given a Shakespearean monologue and 20 minutes to prepare it before they perform it! We plug this at about the 32:00 mark, so if you want to listen while you fill out your application, you can! This episode has a heap of laughs, and tips from someone on the inside (though I guess that’s all of us now?) on how to handle social distancing and any isolation blues we may be experiencing. It’s my first zoom recording but Ben made it a fun, relaxed and really easy experience. I hope you enjoy it, even with the odd sound wobble.Keep well,PaulaP.S. DM me on Instagram to let me know!EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Hiking as a metaphor for life. I love hiking. Despite my lack of motivation for exercise and distaste for sweating, I really love going for a long walk outside. There are many well researched reasons why, but if you want a quick look at why hiking is good for your mind and body, have a read of this. If you have any recommendations for hikes around Brisbane and the surrounding areas, I’d love to read them!.....Quarantine vs isolation/physical distancing and what that entails. The best definition I found was:“Self-isolation and quarantine are aimed at preventing people who are infected or are known to have had contact with people who are infected from passing on the virus. Social distancing is a wider measure aimed at stopping the kind of mixing of people that allows infections to spread through a population.”Beall, A. “Why social distancing might last for some time,” BBC Future (online). 2020.This is a great self-isolation how to guide from the Australian government, and here is (at time of release) an updated list of restrictions state by state from The Guardian Australia......Will this change the way we interact going forward? Look, the obvious answer is yes. How could it not? Here are two fascinating articles (long reads, mind) from BBC future. This one is more about the economics of it all, and this one here steps out details about the nature of the virus and how social distancing is still our best bet going forward. In terms of an Australian perspective, The Guardian has a series dedicated to this called Life After Lockdown which is worth checking out (they’re much shorter too).....Surprisingly, MC Hammer, and how the world has changed around dating and intimacy. Now that physical intimacy is largely out of the question, what does dating look like? Or sex? Here’s an interview by VOX on how Rona is affecting sex lives, and an article from Quartz which takes a broader, but still American focused slant......We touch briefly on how the world is geared towards extroverts and what the “new normal” has meant for introverts. Here’s a fun opinion piece about Introverts and plagues through history, and what the current climate can teach us......The Actors’ and Entertainers’ Benevolent Fund is an amazing organisation doing critical work to support creatives and arts industry workers seeing as they have been left behind in the Australian and Queensland government’s Covid Response welfare net. It does genuinely help......You can find the MonologueAthon here:Donate or register your interest on the website hereInstagramTwitterFacebookFacebook Event for all the information and updates. And lastly, here is a link to a time zone converter so if you aren’t on AEST, you can find out when to join in the fun. This is not about productivity hacks! This is a fun episode where we talk less about how to do things in less time and with more attention, and more about why it’s so hard to, you know, do the thing.Harry Wallace is a writer, journalist, theatre maker, adventurer, student, and a self-proclaimed expert procrastinator. Procrastination is a multifaceted issue, and Harry beautifully fleshes out some of the more nitty gritty issues as we discuss the psychological phenomenon of procrastination, what drives it, the ramifications, and it’s place within both the human experience and society. This episode is a little bit longer than usual because I thought it might be nice now that a lot of folks are stuck at home, trying to occupy ourselves with nice thing instead of panic. I thoroughly enjoyed creating this, so I hope that you enjoy listening! And if you do, leaving a review would really help us reach more people (plus the nice ones make my day), and if you’re listening on spotify, sharing it to your stories would be equally excellent. We recorded this before physical distancing became a thing, so don’t worry! Harry and I are both at home, minimising our contact with the outside world. I hope you are too.Keep well,PaulaP.S please, please please please, stop drinking energy drinks. Mama Paula wants you to take care of yourselves.EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Here is that Deakin University resource about procrastination, it is pretty academically oriented, but still has some useful tips and insights......This is the excellent Ted Talk we mention which has the procrastination monkey......We touch briefly on the attention economy. Here is a sort of quick read on the subject from the Nielsen Norman Group (they’re a big deal for marketers, advertisers and businesses in general). There’s also a video down the bottom about “banner blindness.” I also found this much longer read, and philosophical article about the attention economy from an ethical perspective......This is a great article from Vanity Fair which definitely addresses the attention economy, but has more to do with digital health......If you, like me, are fascinated by the brain, then have a squiz at this educational resource about the limbic system. Thelimbic system is largely responsible for our emotional life, and has a hand in forming memories......Here is a that scene in Mad Men with the Kodak Carousel......Mel Robbins talks about the science behind her 5 Second Rule here, and there’s a short video too. In that vein, I found this cool scholarly article about how distraction effects memory......We spoke a bit about the pomodoro method, and how useful it is (when you, ya know, use it). When I listened back to this episode to edit it, I was reminded again, and I’m looking for a good app. So if you have any recommendations, send them my way!You can find Harry’s work here:This is his writing for The Creative Issue and you can also listen to his podcast News Sense, here is a link to it on stitcherHad a chuckle? Hello! We recorded this before physical distancing became a thing, so don’t worry! Peter and I are both at home, minimising our contact with the outside world. In this episode I talk to performer Peter Wood about how to take a compliment, and why it’s so tricky to do. Usually I would have cut out most of the tangents and odd moments and put them in a blooper reel for later, but I figure we could all use a little more levity and a few more giggles. So, here is Peter and I at the end of a very long day, there are funny voices and Kath and Kim references, and I hope you like them.Keep well,PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned..... I think this is the psychology today article I mention, and here is another one which talks about what it means when you have trouble accepting compliments. And HERE is an article on LinkedIn for all you super profesh people on how declining compliments at work may mean you’re undercutting your performance and self-sabotaging. ..... Tall poppy syndrome is defined as “a perceived tendency to discredit or disparage those who have achieved notable wealth or prominence in public life,” according to Google. It’s pretty specific to Australia and New Zealand in terms of cultural practices. You can find Peter here:On Instagram and FacebookHad a chuckle? Feeling less alone? Hello! At 35:00 we discuss a submission to the Things I’ve Never Said segment which comes with a trigger warning around suicidal thoughts. To the listener who submitted it: you are cared for, you are as deserving as anyone else to be here drawing breath. No matter how logical it seems, you not being around is not easier or better for anyone. Steve and I really, truly, want you to get help.I’ve put numbers for each state and websites you can use in the show notes; take care of yourself. In this episode we talk about the one thing we can all be certain of: death. Which also happens to be the thing that we have the least certainty about. Hooray for the absurdities of life! While the topic is heavy and somewhat macabre, Steve and I manage to have a good laugh as we figure out this whole mortality situation. I hope you do too.Steve Pirie is a stellar human and I am so excited to have him back on the podcast. This is complicated, not linear, and honestly so personal there is no one way to do it. An amazing podcast in general, but particularly if you are grieving, is Griefcast.....Does your debt die with you in Australia? Mostly. There are a lot of variables, but yes. If you have a lot of debt and you die, as long as that debt is not in someone else’s name as well (eg. A joint loan for a mortgage or something) then it will be written off by the lender when you die after every attempt has been made to pay it off using your estate. Your estate is all of the stuff you leave behind; your house, your clothes, your stamp collection, your car, your phone, your share portfolio, etc. Here is an article which goes through it really well but focusses mostly on mortages, and here is one by Canstar which talks about credit card debt......Look I couldn’t find a good enough how-to that didn’t have a paywall or a weird site name, so here is a wikihow on how to write your own eulogy.....Class exists even when you die because there are financial hurdles with funerals. Welcome back! This week we get to hear what it’s like to work for one of the biggest production studios in the world, and how it would be so good if ruminating wasn’t a thing.Annaleese is a gem. She has done extremely well under pressure and become a sparkling, determined, multi-talented creative professional. As well as an excellent brunch companion. She has a lot of practical tips for anyone considering making a big move to further their career, and her observations on working in the film industry are excellent. Go find her on Instagram and tell her what a kick-ass human she is!We recorded this episode last year, so the Charmed reboot has already aired! Have you seen it? Did you like it?Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....The union Annaleese mentions is IATSE Local 891Something that we discussed was very important to do before you came over is to know the job you want to do before you book your flight, do your research and find out the skills you need for the role, and out what union you want to be part of. Do all of this BEFORE you arrive......Ruminating about stuff at work and how not to: look, there is no short answer or quick fix to this one. In order to stop ourselves ruminating, we kinda need to rewire our brains to a certain extent. You can read a bit about rumination and tips on stopping in this article which sounds a lot like the info I looked up on the APA website. This one is a little more in-depth and also quite good.As a ruminator myself, this is something which I’ve given a lot of thought to (a bad joke, yes. But it still had to be made).Very recently, I finally downloaded the Headpsace app. I’ve tried meditation before and was a bit meh about it, but I do think that in the three weeks I’ve been using it, it has helped. The $91.99 annual payment (which isn’t an insignificant amount for me) came out of my account this morning, and it’s worth it for me. This isn’t an ad, btw. I just do find the app has been quite helpful in training me to note things and manage my thoughts in a healthier way. (Though if anyone out there has the power to get Headspace to sponsor an ep, do it!).....You can find Annaleese here:On InstagramHad a chuckle? Feeling less alone? Welcome back! It has been a while, and I do apologise for the delay. Life has been a bit rough and frantic on my end, and so it’s taken me a lot longer than I thought to get this baby going again. Thank you all for your patience. This week we talk about the painful side of achieving things. We all know how glossy achievement looks on Instagram and how effortless it can appear. But what about when you’re in the midst of doing the thing and it just sucks? Why does the process not feel like achieving at all?Zane is many things; designer, actor, podcaster, possibly Yoda’s alter ego, and a genuinely lovely human being. I put about 5-6 hours into each episode before it is delivered to your ears. Hooray for useless trivia!.....There IS a not to secret feud between dentists and the rest of the doctoring world! Apparently, it may have come down to the University of Maryland giving the middle finger to two dentists wanting to add dentistry to the medical courses at the uni in 1840. Here’s a fun article from The Atlantic about it......The Fig Tree Quote: “I saw my life branching out before me like the green fig tree in the story. From the tip of every branch, like a fat purple fig, a wonderful future beckoned and winked. One fig was a husband and a happy home and children, and another fig was a famous poet and another fig was a brilliant professor, and another fig was Ee Gee, the amazing editor, and another fig was Europe and Africa and South America, and another fig was Constantin and Socrates and Attila and a pack of other lovers with queer names and offbeat professions, and another fig was an Olympic lady crew champion, and beyond and above these figs were many more figs I couldn't quite make out. I saw myself sitting in the crotch of this fig tree, starving to death, just because I couldn't make up my mind which of the figs I would choose. I wanted each and every one of them, but choosing one meant losing all the rest, and, as I sat there, unable to decide, the figs began to wrinkle and go black, and, one by one, they plopped to the ground at my feet.”― Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar(After this, the narrator eats something and feels better. Bones aren’t the only thing that can break, and our mental health is just as instrumental to our well being as physical health. I’ve brought back my favourite med student, Janani, to have a chat about how we can take care of ourselves (and each other) in after a punch in the feels. This will be the second last episode of the season, and Stumble Through will be back January 29th 2020 with more tips, chuckles and hugs through your headphones. Just a heads up in case you are listening to this while driving.EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Self-Soothing sounds weird, and it’s usually associated with parenting and new parents trying not to rush to their child’s cot each time they cry. It boils down to the things we do to centre ourselves when we’ve experienced something shocking or emotionally tumultuous. Some examples I found were having a cup of tea (like J says she likes to do); putting yourself in an observational mode where you observe your feelings, thoughts, and the world around you while creaing some distance from it emotionally; and being compassionate with yourself about all the things you’re observing. I wasn’t a big fan of any of the resources I found on the internet about this, so if you have a good one, or one you have found really helped you, send it through!.....Here is an article I enjoyed on the science behind giving a name to the feeling and why that helps us process it......Here is that Ted Talk I keep banging on about by Guy Winch......I found this article on Psychology Today about rumination vs reflection which made me think about some of my thought patterns and habits, and has made me look for signs that I may be dipping form one into the other......Journaling is a very powerful tool in general, but especially when it comes to giving us an opportunity to grasp messy feelings and big life stuff. The act of writing things down makes us put our thoughts in order, and the act of consciously constructing a narrative around it helps us take control of it (the emotion or our lives). So it’s great for being reflective instead of ruminative, processing emotions, and managing stress. Here’s a science-y article on it.....Holding space is an interesting turn of phrase form therapy doing the rounds on the internet now. I’ve found this piece on Medium about it which really interested me. Something that my therapist reminds me to do is to hold space for negative emotions, and allow them to be there without judgement. Rum put it beautifully in his poem The Guesthouse: …. Welcome and entertain them all! /Even if they are a crowd of sorrows /who violently sweep your house /empty of its furniture, /still, treat each guest honorably. /He may be clearing you out /for some new delight…..... One of your excellent submissions got us talking about being specific when you offer help. It’s true, because while we all like to feel useful and help where we can, ASKING for help can often feel like we’re burdening people or putting them out in some way. I recently read something by Laura Jane Williams, where she talks about offering help in terms of tasks, and shifting the focus from the person. It went something along the lines of “What would be needed to achieve this?” And so if your friend is feeling like they’re never going to get a job, maybe the thing to do is to first ask them what would help them feel like they are capable, and then see what you can do to make it happen. What is the best advice you’ve ever had about giving or offering help?Janani is a bit too busy kicking butt and healing people to be on socials, so follow Queensland Health instead!InstagramFacebookProduced by That’s Not Canon Productions. We’re long overdue for another career spotlight, and so this week I chat to my friend Teri Steer about her career path to becoming a stage manager at La Mama. La freaking Mama. That’s so cool I’m not even going to swear about it. Teri is a stage manager, designer, and a familiar face in Melbourne and Brisbane tech crews. One of the many things I admire about Teri is her resilience, and it really shines through as we talk about her journey to where she is now. Her path hasn’t been simple, and that is what makes her sharing it so valuable I think. One of the key lessons from this episode is that the most important thing to do for your career, is realise it is yours. And you have got to do what is best for you; do your degree slower, work on projects while you do it, change your major, whatever best serves you and your growth, do that.Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....In case you have been living overseas or under a rock, La Mama is a pretty big deal. Breakups are, among other things, painful. Pain is a good teacher though. A tough, unnerving, total a****le, but a good teacher. I think we live in a society where we associate breakups with the end of romantic relationships, but they are far more widespread and nuanced than that.In this episode I talk with Aimee Duroux (who you may remember from our social media episode) about why they hurt so much, how to go about them, and what is to be gleaned from them. Aimee is an actor, producer, writer, social media maven, voice over artist, and the human personification of sunflowers. Is yet to be released but you better believe that Make sure you stay in the loop by following the Facebook page.....In the episode I talk about one of my most painful platonic break-ups from back when I was in primary school. I heard myself using the phrase “distress they caused me” and I just wanted to, firstly, clarify that break-ups cause emotional distress, but it would be unfair of me to blame that on the people involved, as they have no power or responsibility over my emotions. And secondly, I wanted to say that none of the people in question were cruel. Sure it hurt; it would always hurt. But they did it in the most mature way possible, which was really impressive considering we were all 13. I was aware at the time that there wasn’t a better way they could have handled it, and it was just going to hurt for a while. A lot of my distress came from the narrative I had created around it, and they had no control over that. I have since done a LOT of work on myself in therapy to rewrite this narrative, and address the nasty core beliefs it was rooted in. If you can, do. And if you can’t, then I’m sure there are plenty of other ways you can cut down on single use plastics. There are a terrifying number of single use plastic products so the options to cut them out are pretty numerous. In this episode I speak with inimitable Aidan Rowlingson; an actor, director, producer, entrepreneur, proud Butchulla man, and self-acknowledged unicorn (because he really is that rare and magical). We chat about what university doesn’t prepare you for, some lessons we learned the hard way, and the exorbitant price of a night out. This is advice and insight I wish I’d had, or thought to seek out when I was studying my degree. While we can only talk to our experiences of doing creative degrees, I certainly think there are a number of transferable insights into that gulf between uni and the real world. Particularly when Aidan talks about the need to look at your higher education as the beginning of your career. I hope you get a whole heap of value our of this; tell us what you think on Instagram or in our Facebook group!Keep well,-PaulaP.S There were some sirens in the background of this episode at the beginning, don’t be alarmed if you hear them while you’re driving.EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Talking yourself up is an icky tricky business, particularly when there’s a job involved. Here’s a quick read on Psychology today that talks about it, and how we can get better at writing good things about ourselves so people give us money......Being comfortable with discomfort is a skill that is hugely beneficial, especially when facing big scary uncertain times like the post-graduation swamp. I have since revised my opinion on the usefulness of two and five year plans for uni students who study creative courses that involve a lot of group work (like performing arts degrees). I think that having a set of goals and time frames is an excellent way to keep yourself accountable, and stop yourself from sinking into a whirlpool of anxiety when you face great discomfort and uncertainty in your career prospects, or life in general. That being said, I found this cool article on how rejection and these periods of uncertainty can actually benefit you in the long term. Folks, this is one I’ve super excited about, and have been sitting on for a while. It’s such a rich conversation, and I really hope this episode is as useful for you as it was for me.Madeleine Little is a disabled artist, theatre maker, and researcher. She is also incredibly kind, articulate, and knowledgeable arts professional with a smile so arresting it will pull you across the room like that dance move with the invisible lasso. You should absolutely follow her on the accounts listed in the show notes and read her Mama Mia article, which MAMA FREAKING MIA APPROACHED HER TO DO (click through to it to get as excited about it as I am). Go send her big love for finishing off her masters! Go do some googling to learn more about the topic! Go follow some cool disabled artists on Instagram! Go go go!Keep well,-PaulaP.S. This is a phone interview, and there was a little itty bitty lag, but it’s not noticeable after the first two minutes.EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Non-disabled vs. abled as Maddie said in the episode, this comes down to context but non-disabled is generally the safer bet. Terminology is a really basic and easy thing to get around though, and it’s also a really simple way to start learning more about disability as an experience, the structural aspects of it within institutions, and much more. Here’s a guide on terminology by the Australian Network on Disability. For those feeling a smidge daunted, here is a great quote from the webpage:While the above information may seem daunting if it’s new to you, the most important thing to remember is to simply focus on the person, rather than the disability. Don’t be so afraid of saying the wrong thing that you don’t say anything at all. Relax, be willing to communicate, and listen, (AND, 2019).(Yes I just used correct APA citation formatting. I didn’t get a HECs debt to not remember this.).....Emotional Labour was first defined in The Managed Heart. Read more about it here, as well as a little chat with Arlie Hochschild here if you’re short on time and just want a little more understanding......Alicia Grandey gives us an updated definition of emotional labour with some help from Aunt Bernadette here, in a quick and easy read......Privilege! What an important thing to know and examine! I have immense privilege with my non-disabled body, and one of the reasons I know this because the reason why I didn’t record with Maddie in person is because I couldn’t find a recording studio which was accessible for her. I had never before counted the stairs between the street and the recording chair, or paid any attention to hand rails, and that was an eye opener. Which is what privilege is: it’s not having to think about x, y, or z. It is the freedom and ease of not having to consider things that are very real everyday experiences for others. Privilege isn’t good or bad, and often isn’t a choice. It just comes with the responsibility of understanding it, acknowledging it, and using it to build a better future for people who don’t have the same. Here is an excellent look at the concept and what we can do with it from Psychology Today......The Amy Gaeta blog is a long read but a clear, easy, and very good one. Surprise! I had so much fun with Peter and Kristen, I asked them if they could stay and answer just a few more questions. In this episode we focus on financing a fringe show, and a few other bits of wisdom that I am so pleased I get to share with you. It would be so amazing if you could share one of their posts on whichever platform you use. Just hitting “interested” on their Facebook event, or sharing one of their Instagram posts to your story is a tiny thing that really helps spread their name and the joy of Nutella a little further. If YOU have a fringe show, tell us about it! Dating has never been easy. Never. Which means it is one of the most interesting, absurd and hilarious human experiences to discuss. Now we live in a world where the logistics and a bunch of admin is done for us, but it’s a wild west of behaviour protocols and expectations. Of swipes, ghosts, strings of casual flings all messaging at once, serial monogamy, and “what are we??” texts to friends. In this episode we cover the pros, pitfalls, and transactional nature of dating apps, what the experience of dating can teach us about ourselves, finding someone with baggage that fits yours, and whether it’s easier to find someone online or in person (among many other things).Bridget Morrison is what is commonly referred to as a Girl Boss. She’s a creative, co-editor of Kindred Zine, social media content creator and marketer, barista, and uni student. She is brilliantly funny and intelligent, and as in love with John Mulaney as I am.In a startling turn of events, since recording this Bridget is now in a relationship with a gentleman she met on Hinge, and I’ve got a date with that guy I saw who made me think “oh shit.” So it looks like the universe or some such omnipotent force is having a laugh, and turning our lives in to romcoms. We have no complaints as yet.Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Turns out Bridget is not alonein her Tinder usage habits. According to Lendedu (a loan service in the US? If you or someone you love has a uterus, then this episode is for you! As we mention in the episode, we are not medical professionals and you should get in touch with your GP if you have any questions or concerns after listening. We have done our googles, but not a PHD. Periods are bloody normal, bloody important, and honestly how are there not more widespread memes about it?This was one of the first episodes I recorded with the wonderful folks at Brisbane Podcast Hub (an AMAZING resource for podcasters, highly recommend) and as I’m a novice when it comes to recording and editing, I had no idea what gain was. Until now. So unfortunately, this episode’s audio quality is not up to our usual standards. There will be a few more like this in the future I’m afraid, but I promise the content is worth it. Self-talk is probably one of the most intimate and important things we can master for our own good. The way we talk to ourselves links to the way we see ourselves, and the way we interact with the world. It’s an aspect of our communication skills that we never get enough time on in school. This week I talk to the marvellous Johanna Lyon about self-talk, within a special context. In this bumper special, you get to listen to the first ever recording of Stumble Through. A recording I held back on releasing because of my own self-talk around it. I am really excited to show it to you, and of course to introduce Jo (that will be funny after you’ve listened). Jo is a young artist passionate about laughing with others. Jo is most interested in discussing and unpacking why humans do what we do in areas of life regarding love, childhood and discrimination, among other things. She aims to achieve connection between strangers within her work. She is a truly marvellous human being that I am so lucky to call my friend. I am really glad I get to share this, and her, with you this week. Don’t forget to get tickets to her Short and Sweet show this weekend! The American Psychology association defines it as “Exposure therapy is a psychological treatment that was developed to help people confront their fears… a psychologist might recommend a program of exposure therapy in order to help break the pattern of avoidance and fear. In this form of therapy, psychologists create a safe environment in which to “expose” individuals to the things they fear and avoid. The exposure to the feared objects, activities or situations in a safe environment helps reduce fear and decrease avoidance.“Read more about it here: https://www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/patients-and-families/exposure-therapyAnd recently, immersion therapy has taken on a new meaning. In this episode Paula sits down with Ben Warren, a man who is genuinely the life and soul of every party. Ben is intelligent, kind, and a bloody good laugh. Which explains how he made our chat about paperwork bearable. Ben has so many beautiful insights into how travel enriches and challenges us, and I’m so excited to share them with you.For a lot of millennials, travelling is basically a rite of passage. It is a gift to yourself in so many ways, but it’s not like the movies. Just because you travel across the world doesn’t mean you will find yourself, nor will it prevent your problems from following. What it will do is remove the distractions of everyday life and bring things that were floating out of sight into focus (which isn’t always picturesque). Perhaps that is the greatest gift of travel; giving ourselves the spaces and time to let the beautiful, scary things tugging at the corners to show themselves, and for us to sit with them. Mostly it’s the food though.Keep well,-PaulaP.S. This episode is a little longer than our usual ones, let us know what you think on Instagram! We’d love your feedback so we can keep refining the work to be more useful.EPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned.....Passports!You can renew, apply for, or just read up on Australian passports here: https://www.passports.gov.au/As with all bureaucracy, be prepared to do this more than once because they WILL find something wrong with it......The Verfremdungseffekt (hard to say and harder to spell) is also called the distancing effect, or the alienation effect. It’s the use of techniques (usually within the context of theatre) to bring attention to the artifice of theatre (highlighting the performativity) and emotionally distance audiences from what they were seeing. Brecht took inspiration from Viktor Shklovsky’s theory of ostranenie which means “making it strange,” or defamiliarization, and I think that might be what I was thinking of?Read all about it here: https://www.britannica.com/art/alienation-effect.....English language teaching- maybe don’t just put your number up at universities, go through an actual organisation and do your research. With our growing ability to sell anything through the internet, and the rise of the gig economy magnified by hustle culture, side hustles are the norm. I actually can’t think of a single person I know who doesn’t have one (monetised or not). And with the current economy, stagnant wage increases, and the lack of job security, it honestly seems like a great idea to find a way to make some dollarydoos out of them. Like, yesterday.Zane is a graphic designer, podcast host and producer, actor, freelance designer, theatre director and producer, podcast and social media consultant, and a champion human being. This podcast would never, ever, have existed without him and the network. Above all else, Zane is a community builder; a creative who is paving the way for Australian artists to make cool stuff. May his mere existence reassure you that humans are beautiful creatures, and we are all doing our best to help each other. May it inspire us all to do the same.Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned…..Bizarrely, I seem to have actually closed a tab for the first time this year. Apparently, it was the Guardian article about the case for having a hobby and not monetizing it. If you find it, do let me know!I DID find these excellent articles on the subject if you fancy a little leisurely read:Not Everything is a Side Hustle from Ann Friedman at The Cut: https://www.thecut.com/2018/01/hobbies-dont-need-to-make-you-money.htmlThe Case For Having The Hobby Without The Side Hustle by Heather Adams at Rewire: https://www.rewire.org/work/having-hobby-without-side-hustle/.....In regards to knowing what to charge for your work and services:A quote which swam across my screen the other day that really resonated with me was “Believe in yourself. Under-confidence leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy that you’re not good enough for your work,” – Dr Roopleen. This is applicable in literally everything, but I think it really helps when considering how to price yourself. Aside from the basic maths of cost of materials plus labour hours, remember that you can always ask for a little more than you think you can, and finish with “but we can work something out.” Sometimes people will ask to work something out. Sometimes they will be happy to pay what you ask. Sometimes they will be shocked you don’t charge more......The main question in all of this, of course, is if you even want to. Contrary to what I thought when I first read that article’s title, there is enormous value in cultivating time for something you love. Hell, it’s actually an act of self-care to gift yourself the time and space to do something purely for pleasure. That is something that can feed you in many ways. So, think carefully before you try and make money out of it, because the relationship you have with it will change dramatically......You can listen to these podcasts Zane hosts wherever you get your podcasts:One Third of LifeDisney vs DisneyMusicals Taught Me Everything I KnowGlass of WhineA New World OrderAnd Then They FuckedMighty Motion Picture RangersOr check out the TWENTY SIX other podcasts that he produces through That’s Not Canon. Ah yes, not getting what you want. It can be pretty nifty in life actually. Failure, as we’ve said before on Stumble Through, is a big part of any process. In this episode we unpack how you can use failure, and the options you have when faced with it.Steve Pirie is many things, all of them playful and tender and wise. I am so glad that I convinced him to sit down with me. You can scroll down to find his plays for less than $15 each, and then, in a way, you could also sit down with him.Keep well,-PaulaEPISODE NOTES:Things We Mentioned…..That Hemingway quote I thought came from a journal is actual from his memoir, A Moveable Feast. The whole thing goes:"I would stand and look out over the roofs of Paris and think, 'Do not worry. You have always written before and you will write now. All you have to do is write one true sentence. Write the truest sentence that you know.' So finally I would write one true sentence, and then go on from there. It was easy then because there was always one true sentence that I knew or had seen or had heard someone say."…..We briefly mention stoicism, which is something I mentioned in a previous podcast (and am just a big fan of). Here is an excellent explanation and analysis in Psychology Today: https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/real-women/201809/the-reality-imposter-syndrome…..We mention some of Elizabeth Gilbert’s thoughts on creativity and money. Here is a little slice of what she has to say about making money OUT of creativity: “…find another way to pay the gas bill. When I was an up-and-coming writer, I decided very early on that I would be my own patron, my own studio wife, my own sugar daddy and that I would never demand that my writing provide for me in any way other than the only way that I know it always will, which is to please me and delight me and make me feel like I’m more than just a bystander and a consumer in the world.”Read all of it here: https://ideas.ted.com/fear-is-boring-and-other-tips-for-living-a-creative-life/…..Oh, and if you’re wondering, I did end up buying Big Magic. Within creative communities, there is a bit of stigma around working in an educational context. People can view it as lesser work, or a two-year maximum commitment. Paula talks to Matt Caffoe, creative director of Mashed Theatre Inc., about what working in different spaces can do for your craft, and what TIE really is.That Ira Glass quote about the gap between your taste level and ability level, and how to close it, is a bit of a chunky one. Social media. We’re all on it in some shape or form, but do we know how to use it? In this episode Paula talks to local social media maven Aimee about how she uses social media to run her earring business (High Key Obsessed), how it informs her creative practice, and can enable and build creative careers.P.S In the podcast I mention a statistic I’d encountered last year, and totally misquoted it. Roy Morgan found that young women in Australia spent, on average, over two hours on social media every day. So, while that is not the six that I mention, it is still a fairly significant amount of time, especially as a national average. You can read more about it here:Roy Morgan (2018).
