Technically speaking, anything that is in the past can be categorized as history. But, more often than not, historians deal with events that they exist at a great remove from. That is not the case for Diarmaid Ferriter's latest book ‘The Revelation of Ireland: 1995-2020'.So, does chronicling recent events present a challenge for historians, and what can we say definitively about Ireland in the last 30 years?Diarmaid Ferriter joins Seán to discuss.

Since the early 2000s, one type of shop has quietly become a regular feature on British high streets: the Polski sklep – or Polish shop.Known for their smoked sausages, sour pickles, and wide selection of herbal teas, these shops offer more than just food. With Polish people now the largest non-British nationality in the UK, and Polish the next most spoken language after English and Welsh, they also reflect a broader story of migration and community. Jaega Wise explores what makes these stores worth visiting for everyone, not just Poles, and how they're adapting to the challenges facing the high street. To find out more, Jaega visits Peterborough – a city she once lived in and remembers for its vibrant Polish community. There, she explores the busy Europol supermarket and a popular home-style restaurant, Pierogarnia. In Walthamstow, she meets cultural historian and second-generation Pole Dr Kasia Tomasiewicz, who explains the background behind the herbal teas and how they connect her to her ancestors. And back in Hackney, Jaega makes pierogi at home with food writer Zuza Zak, using a mix of Polish and British ingredients. She also hears from Dr Kathy Burrell, Professor of Migration Geographies at the University of Liverpool. Producer: Eliza Lomas

In light of the latest conflict between India and Pakistan, today's episode focuses on two books that examine India's ancient and recent history. First, ancient India was home to the exchange of goods and ideas that transformed the world, including the number system, heliocentrism, and Buddhism. In his book The Golden Road, historian William Dalrymple makes the case for India's centrality to the story of human civilization. In today's episode, the author speaks with NPR's Scott Simon about why this history isn't a larger part of our popular imagination. Then, we hear from Zara Chowdhary about The Lucky Ones, her first-person account of anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat. In today's episode, she speaks with Here & Now's Deepa Fernandes about the aftermath of the Godhra train burning, Prime Minister Modi's role in the incident, and the dangers of releasing her book in this political moment. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Hail Yes! A Detroit Free Press Podcast About University of Michigan Sports
Say what you want about the Michigan football program, but it sure isn't boring. It was another busy week in Ann Arbor as Sherrone Moore held his first and only media availability of fall camp, with multiple storylines coming out of the press conference. First and foremost, former Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh will now NOT be returning to the Big House for the Wolverines' season opener. However, there was some on-field news that surfaced as well, which Tony and Rainer spend the first half of the show discussing. Then after the break, Andrew joins the guys to discuss some recent comparable situations to what Sherrone Moore has stepped into across college football and what it can tell us about Moore's chances for success. Is Sherrone in a better place than Lane Kiffin was when he took over for Pete Carroll at USC? What about Ed Orgeron taking over for Les Miles at LSU? If you're a diehard college football fan who likes to go into the weeds, this conversation is for you. Read all about the Michigan Wolverines, including some great pieces by Tony and Rainer, by heading to our website at freep.com/sports.
On this episode Cody goes into the crazy veto ceremony that turns the house upside-down.
Skyrocketing rates, shrinking affordability: The U.S. housing market is a mess. It's also a bit of a mystery. Why are prices still sky-high, even though many measures of demand are weak? If the supply of new homes is nearing a historic high, how come the inventory for existing homes is close to a historic low? Today's guests agree that this is one of the weirdest housing markets in recent history. Mike Simonsen, president founder of Altos Research, and Lance Lambert, cofounder and editor-in-chief of Residential Club, join to talk about the state of the U.S. housing market—what makes it ugly, what makes it weird, and what would have to happen to make it better.
