Show Notes: Chris Cowell, a computer science major, shares an anecdote about his college experience. He mentioned that the computer science major concentration at Harvard was different from today, and how he worked with paper and pencil more than computers. Chris talks about the multiple paths taken in life after graduating from Harvard, including working for a public service program called Vista, which was started during the Vietnam War as a way for conscientious objectors to provide service to the country. Chris was assigned to an adult literacy group in Lansing, Michigan, where he was in charge of matching tutors and literacy tutors with students who needed to learn how to read. This experience was unpleasant and lonely, but it was also a good antidote to the occasional preciousness of Harvard. Through this experience, he was able to understand the struggles of a large portion of the population, including students who struggled with brain problems, mental health issues, and other struggles. This experience helped him understand that life doesn't come easy for many people. Chris shares a few anecdotes from his time in the program, including how the term dyslexia is used, how his experience taught him that there are many reasons an adult may have difficulty learning how to read, and how he would match teachers to students. Pursuing a Philosophy Degree and Moving into Consulting Chris initially had a side interest in philosophy and decided to pursue a philosophy degree. He took two years at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, taking more undergraduate philosophy classes and decided to pursue a PhD in philosophy. He went on to Berkeley for grad school and spent six years there, but felt like he was barely hanging on and didn't have much to contribute. He finished the program in 2001 but decided he wouldn't pursue a career in the academic field and decided to go back into computer science. Chris was recruited by Anderson Consulting, a company that had just spun off from Arthur Andersen, which had been involved in the Enron scandal. Chris' experience with Anderson Consulting was not what he expected. He was assigned to an eight-year in-town project in Sacramento, which was a contract with the government of California to set up a child welfare website, which was unfortunate because, although he had learned theory of computer science, he didn't have the practical coding skills  to complete the project. He was given the opportunity to learn programming but later transitioned to Accenture and moved into their research and development lab in Palo Alto during the height of the innovation era in the San Francisco Bay area.  Starting a Technical Training Company Chris moved to Portland, where he worked for Oracle as a computer programmer. He worked for different companies in the Portland area, specializing in testing programs that test other programs. However, he realized that he had only been promoted once over the course of his 20-year career. This realization led him to change their focus from tech to doing technical training. Chris started a one-person technical training company, teaching people how to use software. He sold classes and in-person training to local companies and had fun building the curriculum. He also enjoyed public speaking. However, the COVID pandemic hit, but he had no marketing savvy and his company was failing.  After a few years, he got a job with a real software company, teaching people how to use their software. He recently shifted to another company, and their career now focuses on technical training, building materials, and giving presentations on software usage. Influential Harvard Courses and Professors Chris remembers a few courses from college, but he found the core science courses the most interesting. David Lazarus' Space, Time and Motion, the Recent History of Iran course, and Diana Eck's Comparative Religion course. He loved the music appreciation course taught by Louise vos Gershon, who was described as the only faculty member at Harvard without a PhD. The skills learned in music appreciation have been useful in his singing and guitar playing ever since. Chris also values learning basic music theory, which is essential for musicians who want to understand how music theory works. Manchester has a fascinating beer history, stretching back well over two centuries, and into the industrial revolution. What's remarkable is how that history still influences the northwestern city's beer culture today, whether via one of its four, storied family brewers like Robinson's or JW Lees, or one of its modern trailblazers such as Track or Cloudwater. One of the city's most unquestionably influential breweries is Marble, which was originally established in the Marble arch pub in 1997. The brewery has since gone through two expansions, its most recent in 2019 when it relocated from Manchester to Salford (the difference of which is very important to locals). The latest episode of our podcast takes place here at the brewery, where we hosted a panel discussion in front of a live audience, and delved into the recent history of the Manchester beer scene, as we joined in Marble's 25th anniversary celebrations, which took place towards the end of 2022. Hosted by our very own Matthew Curtis, the panel features a host of luminaries from within the Manchester beer scene, including Jason Menzies, Marble's events manager. We're also joined by Stephanie Shuttleworth, a former Marble employee who has worked in and around the Manchester beer scene for over a decade, and is currently working on a PhD centered around pubs and brewing. Last but not least we're joined by John Clarke, chair of Stockport and South Manchester CAMRA, who has been living and breathing beer in Greater Manchester for over three decades. It's a fantastic discussion, and one of our lengthiest to date, as there was so much interesting history to talk about. Think after 40 muscle is a thing of the past? Think again!  There was a time when I was a cardio bunny. I dabbled in strength training but spent hours each week, sometimes a day, doing “aerobics.”  We tend to think, because we were told it so often for decades, that aerobic activity is best for fitness. Even though more and more science featuring postmenopausal women shows muscle has the most influence on numerous components of health, we're still drawn to “cardio.”  Are you at a point what you're doing isn't working, yet found yourself reluctant to exchange cardio for strength training? This is for you.  Women Need Muscle-Centric Exercise More Than Men Women begin with less muscle and more fat than men. Fat is essential for reproduction. Once hormones needed for reproduction, but also muscle maintenance, decline during the menopause transition, fat tends to increase and muscle loss is pronounced.  One reason that “cardio” doesn't “burn the fat” or boost metabolism is that with the decline of sex hormones, women are more susceptible to negative effects of stress. (2) Cardio, in the way we've always done it, tends to increase stress. (3) At this same time, women tend to become more insulin resistant. A body under stress stores fat in a form of self-preservation. It can't both burn and store fat. The stress hormone cortisol and insulin team up and tend to increase fat deposits around the belly. At midlife, doing more cardio to lose belly weight may actually cause more belly fat.  Keep Stress Low Short walks, even longer hikes, or short bursts of high intensity can certainly reduce the overall stress impact of exercise. That is, keep the stress positive. That hinges most on whether you enjoy, or find joy in, the activity and monitor your stress from all areas of life, adjusting as needed. However, these cardio activities don't influence fat burning beyond the activity. They don't increase muscle mass. Exercise that increases lean muscle mass, however, will not only improve body composition, but many of the symptoms of menopause, and increases healthy lifespan. This goes far beyond just risk of falls.  After 40 muscle is harder, not impossible to build. After 50 it's harder than that. Start.  You've Been Robbed Muscle loss begins at about 30. Studies vary on rate of loss being approximately 3-8% per decade or up to 1% annually after 30 but agree this rate is even higher both during the menopause transition and increases after 60. In severe instances, there is 50% total muscle loss by 80.   Muscle mass losses alter body composition (less muscle means more fat even if you don't gain fat) and are directly correlated with insulin resistance. Not only is this acutely frustrating for women with stubborn weight or belly fat, but long term can lead to type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and osteoporosis.  Recent History's Influence on Muscle and Health Though we're past the worst of the pandemic, we're going to see consequences of the pandemic for years. On average 42% of the population gained weight, on average 29 lbs., during the pandemic.  It wasn't muscle. Gyms were closed. Dumbbells weren't available. For women during the menopause transition when muscle and bone loss can accelerate significantly, (8) is greater chance of early disability. Lack of the muscle stimulus from estrogen combined with lack of strength training to offset it, could mean greater levels of sarcopenia and osteoporosis if not mitigated. Basic Muscle Facts  To gain muscle, you need strength, or resistance training. Women need strength training more than cardio. Women need strength training even more than men. Women 50 or older need strength training more than women 30.  Menopause-Related Reasons to Gain Muscle in Midlife Let's be honest, we're more motivated by immediate gratification than long term risk aversion. Muscle provides both. Well-documented menopause symptoms include but are not limited to: Insomnia Depression Anxiety Hot Flashes  Night Sweats  Weight Gain Fat gain Loss of muscle tone Belly Fat Insulin Resistance  Bone loss Muscle, and muscle building activity, or resistance training, has been shown to improve each and every one of these symptoms.  What's more, strength training surpasses cardio training in doing so. Cardio-induced stress is catabolic, meaning muscle breaks down at a faster rate.  There's more to love about muscle. It decreases inflammation. Inflammation that is linked to many diseases, particularly, Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Termed, type 3 diabetes, Alzheimer's is also a function of blood sugar. There's a direct correlation between amount of muscle mass and risk of AD and dementia. At age 65 a woman's risk of Alzheimer's is 1 in 5.  We are going to outlive men. We're going to need our strength to retain independence. Convinced? Here's how to know you're on the right path.  Measure How Much Muscle You Have Body composition can't be tracked by a scale alone. Invest in a Smart Scale, that is one that measures body fat percent at the least. If it gives you muscle mass in pounds or kgs, even better. You however can do the mass if you have weight and percent body fat.  Don't make the mistake of using BMI (Body Mass Index) as a measure of body composition. You don't know if your muscle is going up, down, or staying the same with BMI. When you know, you can modify exercise or lifestyle habits to support your muscle. It's better to know regularly than to find out annually or occasionally from the doctor or a gym. After 40 Muscle Building Tips Begin strength training twice weekly if you're not After a period of adaptation, reach temporary muscle fatigue each set  Begin with one set of weights you can lift 15-20 times  Progress after 1-2 weeks to weights you can only lift 12-15 times  Progress to two sets after 1-2 weeks Alternate this increase or either sets and or decrease repetitions  Maintain a regular 3 or more set strength training habit twice a week Prioritize sleep  Consume high quality protein throughout the day What Matters Most All of the exercise, nutrition, and lifestyle tips matter. But the greatest of these is strength training. That is, if you begin strength training without increasing protein intake or prioritizing sleep, you'll still benefit. Exercise is a catalyst for other health change however, so you may just find you sleep better because of the exercise, and that you're more conscious of your protein intake.  Work up to twice weekly total body sessions strength sessions with at least 3 sets of 8-10 muscle groups as heavy as you safely can. In 2021, Interior Secretary Deb Haaland (the first Indigenous American to serve as a Cabinet Secretary in the US) called for an investigation into the Federal Native American Boarding School System. In May of this year, the first report was made from the investigation—it was the first acknowledgment by the US government that between 1819 and 1969 (150 years!), the United States operated or supported 408 boarding schools across 37 states (or then-territories), including 21 schools in Alaska and 7 schools in Hawaii. The report finds that indigenous children (American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian) were forcibly removed from their homes and suffered abuse, malnourishment, and even death in the boarding schools. So far, 53 burial sites for children have been found across the school system. Native Nations scholars estimate that as many as 40,000 children died. Many survivors live today and even shared their testimonies at a Congressional hearing earlier this year. This American history has been hidden for so long, but is now coming into the light. How ought we receive it? What can we do? How can we be used to advance justice, mercy, and light in what has been so dark? Let's not look away from this history, but look toward it, toward these precious image bearers who were lost and those who have descended from them. This history is near—both in time and place. Let's cry out to the God of all nations for healing. Every ten years officials must redraw voting districts to reflect population changes, according to the U.S. Census. Right now New Hampshire's redistricting process is held up at multiple levels, with the governor and Legislature at odds and lawsuits before the state Supreme Court. New Hampshire candidates are scheduled to file their first campaign paperwork in June, so the clock is ticking to finalize new voting districts. Will the governor and legislators agree on redistricted maps that meet constitutional muster, or will the courts step in? If the courts act, will they keep current maps in place for now or will they draw completely new maps? Whatever the decision, it will have a big impact on who represents you. Looking back at the last three rounds of redistricting in New Hampshire provides some examples of how this year's redistricting might play out.
