My guest today is Mikkel Thorup, the founder and CEO of Expat Money, an expat consultancy company that focuses on helping clients to legally mitigate tax liabilities, obtain second residencies and citizenships, as well as make foreign investments, including international real estate. Raised in Canada and self-educated since the age of 12, Mikkel's journey is anything but conventional. He's lived in nine countries, visited over 110, and owns real estate in ten. His unique blend of lived experience and global expertise gives him an unparalleled perspective on freedom, sovereignty, and the tools needed to thrive outside failing Western democracies. In this episode, we dive into the philosophy of "planting flags", the idea of diversifying your life and assets across multiple jurisdictions to avoid being at the mercy of any one government. Mikkel walks us through the principles of perpetual travel, international tax strategy, second passports, and safe havens across Latin America and beyond. Tune in for Mikkel's insights; an urgent wake-up call to prepare a Plan B before it's too late.► If you got value, please like, comment, share, follow and support my work. For the freedom-minded, there's plenty of doom and gloom where we look for it—wars, technocratic control systems, and economic collapse. But while most people stay stuck in fear or outrage, others are taking action. They're securing second residencies, moving capital out of reach, and planting flags in places where freedom still has a fighting chance. In today's episode, I joined Hrvoje Moric on his program Geopolitics & Empire to discuss what I'm seeing on the ground: which countries are best for freedom-minded expats, how I separate fantasy from reality in the offshore space, and why I believe the path to sovereignty lies in pragmatic action—not black-pilled defeatism. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH HRVOJE MORIĆ Listen in as I walk Hrvoje through my origin story—from being labelled with a learning disability to building a life of international freedom. Tune in as Hrvoje, and I discuss the repackaged push for a North American Union and why more centralization is the opposite of what the world needs. Discover why Panama, Paraguay, and Uruguay top my list of countries best set up for expats. Find out how I've helped clients stay grounded and realistic about expat life—without buying into the fear porn or the sunshine-and-rainbows fantasies. Hear my response to critics who overgeneralize Latin America—and why sweeping narratives miss the real, nuanced opportunities on the ground. Unpack how bureaucracies in many third-world countries' inefficiency act as a feature, not a bug, when attempting to implement technocratic controls. Learn why I favour tangible assets, like international real estate and precious metals, over manipulated stock markets. By the end of this episode, it will be clear why I reject black-pilled defeatism and instead focus on practical, pragmatic strategies to preserve liberty and wealth. It's no secret I am a big fan of Latin America. I've called Panama my home for the past five years, and my last two children were born in Chile and Brazil. Why are so many freedom-minded individuals and families choosing Latin America as their expat destination? Today's guest, my good friend Andrea Martinez, is here to share her insights. Originally from Ecuador and now living in Panama, Andrea has firsthand experience with the expat lifestyle. As a former pediatrician turned real estate developer, she has helped countless families make the transition to Latin America. In this episode, Andrea breaks down why more people than ever are fleeing high-tax, more expensive countries in favour of the freedoms and opportunities found south of the border. Enjoy! TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH ANDREA MARTINEZ HIEBERT Tune in to learn why migration to Latin America has doubled in the last decade and what's driving the trend. Discover how weather, taxation, and government overreach are pushing people to look South of the Border for their "Plan-B." Listen as Andrea explains how affordable Latin American real estate offers expats a chance to live in luxury at a fraction of Western prices. Understand why cultural and political shifts in the West—especially regarding education and family values—are prompting concerned parents to relocate to Latin America. Hear Andrea's thoughts on Latin America's strong family bonds and why this region remains protective of parental rights. Learn about the taxation advantages in much of Latin America and how certain residency programs allow individuals to keep more of their hard-earned income. Get a sneak peek into Andrea's work developing self-sustainable communities for like-minded expats looking to start fresh. By the end of this conversation, you'll have a much clearer understanding of why Latin America is an expat hotspot and why it just may help you fulfill your offshore dreams. There is a centralized revolution occurring in health care, and now the concept of voluntary health sharing has emerged as a new avenue that freedom-minded expats can use to protect themselves and their families in the event of unexpected injury or illness. That's what today's guest, Andy Schoonover, joins me to discuss. Andy is the CEO and founder of CrowdHealth. The company uses a voluntary crowdfunding model to pay its users' medical bills and can even help them when they are overseas. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH ANDY SCHOONOVER Listen in to hear how Andy's personal experience with the U.S. healthcare system led him to create CrowdFund as a solution to the outrageous prices and lack of transparency. You will be shocked to learn about the medical procedure for Andy's daughter that a U.S. insurance company deemed “unnecessary.” Discover why the doctor-patient relationship in the U.S. has been replaced by the doctor-insurance company relationship, leaving the patient by the wayside. Learn just why healthcare is so much more expensive in the U.S. than just about anywhere else on Earth. Why are Americans so obese in comparison to the rest of the world? Andy digs into the root causes of such poor health trends in the U.S., even while having some of the best doctors in the world. Uncover why Western medicine often misses the mark by focusing solely on treating symptoms while often neglecting the underlying health issues that cause them. Hear Andy and me explain why a strong community—like the one we have built here at Expat Money—is essential to a functioning healthcare system. Discover how the CrowdHealth model of voluntary health sharing was inspired by how similar communities, such as those in Kenya as well as the Amish. What type of people typically join the Crowd Health community? You won't be surprised to hear a lot of similar qualities Lastly, find out how Crowd Health can help expats when they experience unexpected medical issues while overseas. Freedom-minded folks like you and I can often feel isolated in a world where so many people are affected by socialist propaganda, the woke mind virus, or whatever you want to call it. Can you really count on your neighbours when they think your views are “nutty” or that your concerns about world events make you a “conspiracy theorist?” In today's episode, I am excited to present you with a solution to this problem: Veritas Panama, an off-grid community living development in the highlands of Panama. Don't worry - this isn't some hippie-dippie place with small log cabins, no internet, and no access to modern amenities… Veritas Panama is a luxury development designed specifically for freedom-oriented individuals who want to guarantee a secure future for themselves and their families without foregoing the modern amenities of the developed world. I founded this company to find real solutions to the problems faced by freedom-seekers around the world, and Veritas Panama is a direct response to the type of concerns I hear all the time. As much of the world's political elite prepares to usher in a dystopian nightmare flush with draconian “solutions” like CBDCs, Digital IDs and “15-minute cities', we are forming a strong, self-sufficient community in Panama that will be immune to many of these machinations. If you want to become a part of this community, email expat@EcoVillages.life right away to secure your lot. Tom Bodrovics, welcomes back Mikkel Thorup for an updated discussion on the increasing trend of moving and investing offshore due to negative developments in Western Countries like Canada and the USA. Mikkel highlights how political statements from leaders and the media could fuel the desire to leave these countries. He underscored the urgency of having a backup plan, given the potential increases in fees and taxes that could make leaving increasingly expensive. Mikkel expressed concerns over the rising costs of moving overseas and the increasing investment requirements for obtaining residency in some countries. He acknowledged the appeal of countries with attractive taxation, weather, and good economies. Mikkel advocates for individual freedom and the importance of making good decisions for ones families and investments. He lauded the efforts of the new presidents of El Salvador and Argentina in turning around their economies through libertarian policies, but remains cautious. Mikkel discusses his appreciation for various cultures, economic drivers, food, water, energy independence, and geopolitics when considering countries for expats. Italy and Ireland are amongst top countries for individuals with ancestry to apply for citizenship or residency due to their relatively straightforward processes. He shared real-life examples of clients obtaining Italian and Irish citizenship through ancestral connections. Mikkel discussed various aspects of international investment and taxation, including the process of withdrawing investments from Canada or the US without triggering capital gains taxes. How one goes about selling shares, relocating, and purchasing property overseas. In today's episode, I'm going to introduce a new segment in the show, one that my team and I have been talking about internally for a while, that will be known for now as “Expat News.” The idea is that every quarter or so, as I'm reading the news or going through government websites and I see changes to immigration and programs and things that affect the offshore and expat space, I'll do one of these episodes breaking it all down. So enjoy this premier edition of Expat News, where we'll discuss a number of stories from the wave of migration from Canada to the popularity of Panama's investment visa to El Salvador's interesting - and pricey - citizenship program. Enjoy! LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK! This episode was a little bit of an experiment, so I really would appreciate all of your feedback. Would you like to see more “Expat News” segments in the future? In today's episode, I am going to detail the recent trip that I made to Prague via Costa Rica, via Germany, and then on the way back through Turkey, Cuba, and then back to Panama. It was quite an adventure. And hopefully, there will be some suitable lessons in this one for you on what to do and what not to do when travelling abroad. Enjoy! TODAY'S EPISODE ON MY ADVENTURES TO AND FROM THE LIBERTY IN OUR LIFETIME CONFERENCE Listen to me let off some steam about my air travel woes, starting with the longest walk in airport history in Germany! Hear why some fellow conference attendees were a little weirded about by our supposedly “masonic” hotel. I discuss how I got to meet in person to plan the future of international cities - as discussed in last week's episode - in my new advisory role on the board of Tipolis. Long-time listeners will get a real trip down memory lane with all the past podcast guests I got to meet while in Prague. It was really an all-star Expat Money lineup! Hear about the presentations I gave, including the speech I gave on the often-overlooked emotional aspect of moving abroad. If you thought my travel woes ended with my transfer through Germany, you'll be blown away when you hear about the real drama that began as I departed via Turkey. Listen to how I wrapped up a loose end on my quest for a Turkish passport in what I hope will finally seal the deal. Be sure to check out my episode on Turkey for the backstory! Did you really think the travel woes ended there? You will not believe what I dealt with on the last leg of my journey through Cuba. Seriously, this was just unreal! I never try to glorify things when I relay my experiences, and as you can tell, international travel isn't always a walk in the park. This trip certainly had its low points, but in the end, it's all a part of the adventure, and I'm certain you can take a few tips from my experiences. Today's guest is Alex Voss, a board member and the CFO of TIPOLIS, a company committed to becoming the creator, owner and operator of a global portfolio of international, autonomous cities. Alex also shares an affinity for topics like Bitcoin, Austrian economics and free cities, so as you can imagine, we get along great. Alex and I have known each other for a few years now, and it was great to sit down and pick his brain on the topic of free cities. Enjoy! TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH ALEX VOSS Listen to Alex detail the pathway that took him from an interest in Austrian Economics to directly applying that knowledge through his work with Tipolis. Learn the differences between the for-profit company “Tipolis” and the not-for-profit “Free Cities Foundation.” Alex answers the question on everyone's mind when it comes to “free cities”: where does the money come from, if not from “taxes" in the traditional sense? We discuss one of the most well-known “free cities” projects in Prospera, Honduras, and provide an update on the troubles they've encountered with the government there. Hear Alex further explain the business model behind free cities and how the risk associated with these projects is “built-in” to the price. If everything were perfect and predictable, the costs wouldn't be as attractive as there are today. You are paid handsomely for the perceived risk. Alex and I discuss the interesting case of El Salvador and whether its' adoption of Bitcoin could make it a prime location for a free city project itself. Listen to Alex give an inside look at how and why the doors have rapidly begun to open in the last several years when it comes to finding opportunities with sympathetic governments for potential free city prospects. We discuss how the economic impact of the COVID years, along with the rise of digital nomadism, have completely changed the landscape for the viability of free cities. Today's guest on the Expat Money Show is Parallel Mike. Mike is an organic farmer, investor and host of the Parallel Systems Broadcast. Having spent most of his adult life in Britain while working as a counsellor and competing as an endurance athlete, Mike and his wife emigrated to Poland to focus on living a more self-sufficient and decentralized life. TODAY'S CONVERSATION WITH PARALLEL MIKE Discover how “Parallel Mike” was born. What caused Mike to go from pursuing professional sports to becoming a full-time organic farmer focused on self-sufficiency? Hear Mike describe how the COVID lockdowns prevented his initial move to Poland and what Poland was like when they finally did arrive later that year. Listen as Mike and I discuss the difference between the enforcement of COVID rules “by the numbers” and the reality on the ground. Mike lays out why he doesn't believe massive systemic change will come from within the system itself but rather when the system finally breaks on its own. Mike and I agree on the better strategy for individuals - to build your own systems and find higher ground to fight from. Hear Mike explain his outlook for the “dark days ahead” regarding hyperinflation and global debt liquidation. Listen to Mike detail why he became part of a small Polish settlement rather than living in an expat community. Mike breaks down some of the practical steps he has taken to further increase his independence from the system. Every single member of the Expat Money community can learn from this! Hear Mike and I agree that at this stage, focusing on wealth preservation is the key to financial preservation through what's to come. We delve into the looming threat of capital controls and why it's so important to have the means to protect your wealth from government confiscation and seizure. In today's episode of The Expat Money Show, I am going to recap the last incredible week in Panama, beginning with a hugely informative conference for private clients and culminating in my 40th birthday party. Really the last week has been truly unbelievable. We had clients fly in from every corner of the world, literally from everywhere. I am still decompressing from a busy and eventful week, but I wanted to first stop and take the time to record this episode for you and update you all on some other goings on here at Expat Money while everything is fresh on my mind. PANAMA CONFERENCE AND BIRTHDAY PARTY RECAP I recap the start of the week with the investor's conference I put on in Panama with private clients from diverse places like Germany, Thailand and New Zealand attending. I explain the difference between my "private" clients and my "regular" clients and how you can become one! This week highlights why I like to get to know my prospective clients personally before I take them on - because I spend a LOT of time with them! The type of information provided at this conference would literally take months or even years of research to acquire on your own - offshore investing and residency is definitely not a 'DIY' type of thing. Meanwhile, we also formally launched The Expats Guide on Moving to Mexico, which has already launched to #1 in the "libertarianism" category on Amazon! I also provide a preview of the upcoming trips I am planning in the next year for private clients. If these sounds interesting to you, read this important letter and consider if becoming a private is a good fit for you. Finally, I reflect on my 40th birthday party that was made so special by the 150 + attendees who travelled from places like Germany, the Netherlands, Ireland, the UK, Brazil, Colombia, Canada, USA, etc. - all culminating in an amazing fireworks display! Ultimately, these events are about building a community and realizing that we aren't the crazy ones out there. We in the Expat Money community are building a better and brighter future for ourselves while much of the world goes mad. In a world where money, power, greed, and corruption seem to reign, Mikkel Thorup, founder and director of Expat Money, offers a different perspective. Mikkel's life journey began with a learning disability that led him to drop out of school and travel the world, eventually leading him to explore the world of finance and entrepreneurship. He now helps people move offshore to jurisdictions with favorable or zero taxation and strong asset laws, allowing them to legally reduce their tax obligations. Mikkel explains the differences between immigrants, expats, and digital nomads, and highlights the benefits of being an expat with legal right to live and work in a country. He notes that Americans are overtaxed and provides tips on how to legally reduce tax obligations, such as taking advantage of the foreign earned income exclusion and considering jurisdictions with zero taxation, such as Dubai and Caribbean countries. However, Mikkel also cautions against renouncing citizenship solely for tax reasons and stresses the importance of understanding the emotional side of things. Despite the challenges, Mikkel expresses enthusiasm for his work and helping people navigate the world of offshore finance. Overall, Mikkel's story and insights highlight the ways in which individuals can take control of their financial futures and navigate the complex world of taxation and finance. While the powers that be may seem daunting, Mikkel's message is one of hope and empowerment, reminding us that there are always ways to explore new paths and overcome obstacles. Today on the Expat Money Show, I'm going to share with you my recent interview on an excellent podcast called Winging It Travel Podcast with James Hammond. I had a great experience on the show and really enjoyed our conversation. We got into many things that we don't normally talk about on this program, and I answered questions that had not been asked of me before. My team and I thought the episode was so good that we got special permission to play it on our podcast. WHAT JOHN HAMMOND AND I DISCUSS I talk about the beginning of my life and how I became a world traveller. We talk about the crazy places I've visited during my 23 years as a world traveller. Places that I loved the most and why visiting there will change your life. I've lived in 9 different countries. I talk about all of them and why I moved out of one country and moved to a new country. I share my experience of living in Brazil and why I love the country so much. Why do I continue to travel? Why is travelling so important for my family and me? Where did the concept of Expat Money come from? Did it just drop in my lap? Or did I work through it and figure out things from the ground up? James was a great host. We finish the podcast with a quick-fire travel question round. He asked some amazing questions, and you'll get to hear my fun answers. It's always nice to go way back in your memory and relive some of the best days of your life.
