In this episode of the Insiders Guide to Energy podcast, Scott Mercer, CEO of Focused Energy Inc., provides a comprehensive overview of the future of fusion energy and its potential to revolutionize global power generation. With the rising demand for energy driven by technologies like AI, Mercer explains how fusion could decouple energy production from resource consumption, offering a cleaner, more efficient solution. He delves into the technological innovations behind laser fusion, which mimics how the universe itself generates energy, and highlights the global race to commercialize this groundbreaking power source. Mercer outlines the core differences between laser-based and magnet-based fusion approaches, explaining how Focused Energy is working on scalable laser fusion plants, modeled after successful experiments at the National Ignition Facility (NIF). He discusses the company's ambitious goal to commercialize fusion by the 2030s, turning this scientific milestone into a real-world solution for global energy transition. By utilizing advanced laser systems and high-energy targets, Mercer envisions fusion energy plants generating gigawatts of power to meet the world's growing needs. Listeners will gain insight into the challenges and opportunities of commercializing fusion energy, including supply chain development, engineering hurdles, and the broader impact on the global energy market. With an emphasis on long-term sustainability and decarbonization, Mercer makes the case for why fusion is critical for achieving a cleaner, more reliable energy future. Whether you're an energy enthusiast or industry expert, this episode offers a fascinating look at the cutting-edge technology that could reshape the world's energy landscape. We were pleased to host: https://www.linkedin.com/in/scott-mercer-7ab2929/Visit our website: https://insidersguidetoenergy.com/

WHALEHOUSE & GUNK: Live at Netherworld, Fortitude Valley, 30 October 2022 This is episode 414 of Live Delay and we're featuring two sets from two Meanjin Punk Rock legends, WHALEHOUSE and GUNK, both one word - all caps. This recording was taken at a special reunion Halloween party held in honour of GUNK on the 30th of October in 2022. WHALEHOUSE are a relatively new local band, imagine an unhinged all-female Devo. They're fun, they're weird and they have a thing for large subaquatic fauna. This episode's second set is from local Riot Grrl punk band GUNK, they initially made waves in Meanjin-Brisbane's scene back in 2012 with the release of their self-titled EP and 2013 album ‘Sugarsoap', GUNK had since broken up and remained on hiatus for years before the reunion gig we were lucky enough to record in October of 2022. Just A Spoonful is kicking off a new 2021 season with Brisbane-based musician and broadcaster Scott Mercer, a JASP fan turned JASP guest. Scott was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy in his late twenties, and obviously his very first thought was 'Sweet, now I'm eligible to be on Kaitlyn's podcast' (citation needed). The frontman of Slumlawwd talks about how playing music played a part in his diagnosis, and how he's trying to fit as many gigs in as he can before it gets too hard to hold a guitar. We also talk about our experiences presenting at Brisbane's anarchic community radio station 4ZZZ, Scott's goal to interview Corinne Grant, and why Melbourne is like Valhalla (it's not a compliment). We sat down to record this chat in June 2018, making this possibly the longest I've ever taken to upload an interview to this podcast. Look, it's been a weird few years. This is actually a crossover episode with Scott's podcast Gimme Empathy (http://gimmeempathy.libsyn.com/). While Scott was touring in Melbourne in 2018 we sat down and recorded two conversations back-to-back interviewing each other. You can hear me on episode 39 of Gimme Empathy, 'An Element Of Unknowableness', which Scott uploaded two months after we recorded making me look terrible that I'm uploading this three years later. I've been on Gimme Empathy once before, too – episode 13, 'The Void Screams Back'. If you can't get enough of us going on tangents. Scott's band Slumlawwd (http://slumlawwd.bandcamp.com/) recently released a single 'Withdrawn Failure' off their upcoming album Fuckburg, which comes out in October 2021. Slumlawwd is signed with music label Off The List Records, a new Australian label created with the aim to make the music industry more accessible to disabled acts and disabled audiences. Had to mention Off The List because that's a pretty rad (and much needed) aim. You can also hear Scott presenting 4ZZZ show Live Delay (http://livedelay.com/), broadcasting live gigs (something we vaguely recall down here in locked down Melbourne). I'll be appearing at the National Young Writers' Festival next week. This year the whole festival in digital so you can access it online from anywhere, and as always the festival is free. On the first night of the festival, Thursday night 30th Sept, I get to be an Agony Aunt, and on Saturday night 2nd Oct I'll be doing a reading of fan fiction. There are heaps of other great young writers involved, so I recommend checking it out. http://youngwritersfestival.org/artists/kaitlyn-blythe/ If you'd like to support me to keep creating this podcast and doing other things like paying rent and buying food, consider supporting my Patreon! http://patreon.com/BlytheByName Podcast artwork by Melbourne-based artist Erin Michelle Just A Spoonful's theme music is 'Sleepless' by Anna O This podcast is created on the stolen lands of the Wurundjeri People and I extend my respect to elders past and present.

Housing Market Still Hot but Buyers Have More Options

Transcript00:00:00 Intro Music[Speaker] Kathy FettkeThe housing market appears to be settling down a bit as we head into the Fall. Home price growth is stabilizing and buyers are facing a bit less competition. According to Redfin, the percentage of deals tangled up in bidding wars last month dropped to the lowest level since January. (1) Hi I'm Kathy Fettke and this is the Real Estate News for Investors.Redfin is reporting a steady decrease in buyers submitting competitive bids. Competition peaked in April when 74.1% of the offers written by Redfin agents faced competition. In June, competition dropped to about 66.5%. And last month, in July, only 60.1% of the offers went head-to-head with other buyers. Redfin calls it a bidding war when a buyer faces at least one competing offer.Homebuying Conditions Have ImprovedRedfin says that homebuying conditions have improved over the summer. It says that prices are stabilizing due to an increase in supply. That's giving buyers more options to choose from, and less competition. It's also the end of summer when buyers are typically busy with other things, like getting their kids back to school.Redfin agent, Scott Mercer, from the Sacramento area says: “Competition has started to slow in the last three weeks. We're now seeing five to eight offers on homes instead of 25, and they're coming in $5,000 to $10,000 above the listing price instead of $50,000 to $60,000.” He says they've even started including appraisal contingencies, which many were previously waiving as a way to make their offer more attractive to sellers.Demand Still Outpacing SupplyDemand is still outpacing supply, however, so prices continue to rise but instead of double-digit price growth, we're now seeing single-digit price growth. Realtor.com's Weekly Housing Trends report for the second week in August shows that the median listing price grew 8.6% compared to last year. That's half of what it was in April when the annualized home price growth was 17.2%. (2)Realtor.com expects to see even lower prices as we move into the fall and winter season, but that only means we won't see new record highs. Inventory is still on the low side which helps push prices higher, but there's also an increase in listings. Redfin's Weekly Trends report shows a 3% increase in new listings. It's the 17th time in 20 weeks that listings have gone higher. But the quantity of new listings is still lower than 2019, when the market had a more normal number of homes for sale. So the inventory gap is shrinking but it hasn't gone away. Realtor.com says year-over-year total listings are down 28%.Homes are also selling fast. Time on the market is just 17 days compared to 38 days in 2019.Supply of HomesThe months supply of homes is another good housing market indicator. A report from RE/MAX shows just 1.3 months of supply in July, although inventory rose 4%. That's also 29% lower than it was in July of last year. (3)RE/MAX President Nick Bailey says: “Some buyers have stepped away in light of high prices, seller expectations, multiple offers and intense competition, but new listings are still selling quickly. Clearly, the demand is still there. The market should continue to run hot, especially if interest rates remain low, prices stabilize a bit, and more sellers jump in to take advantage.” (3)That's it for today. POINT ARENA, 3/26/21 - When the weather is favorable, Teresa (Tree) and Scott Mercer drive out to the end of the windy Point Arena bluff, right near the lighthouse, where they position themselves above the rocky shore line in two camping chairs pointing south, out to sea. Snacks at the ready and binoculars in hand, they settle in for a four to seven hour stint of whale watching. The Mercers, who are both retired, are whale watching experts. They actually met on a whale watching boat. These days they spend over a thousand hours a year peering out into the wild, turquoise-blue Pacific ocean, braving the wind and the rain and watching whales travel north and south off of the rocky Mendocino Coast, recording whale numbers, movement, and anything out of the ordinary. Along with other whale watchers who do similar work up and down the Pacific’s eastern shores, the Mercers create a census of the global gray whale population and of other marine species. In general, the gray whale population is stable, but the species has been experiencing an unusual mortality event over the past three years, meaning that more grays have been stranded, washing up on shores, than normal. Unusual mortality events like this can point to deeper problems in the ocean. All of the information the Mercers collect helps other scientists piece together a story about the health of the ocean and the entire planet, which is always important, but especially so the era of climate change.

Timi Temple: Live at Greaser, Fortitude Valley, 21 November 2019 Timi Timple is a committed DIY musician who runs his own ship and puts out a consistent string of releases from his home base in Sydney. Since 2017 he has released the "PHUZZ BOY EP" and a dozen singles, the latest of which, "Fa-Fa-Fading" came out in April. While Timi writes, records and plays just about everything himself, he was backed on this tour by drummer Cat Hunter. A few backing tracks may also fill out the sound, but as you'll soon hear Timi's exuberant guitar playing is the real live deal, as is his charismatic ability to make friends with a rowdy new audience. Go Go Fish: What started out as a new project between self-confessed music geeks Scott Mercer & Ash Shanahan in 2011, has blossomed into a harmonious four-piece garage-pop outfit that goes by the name of ‘Go Go Fish’, adding Angela Hibbard and Murray Bowler to the fold a year later to fill out their desired sound. Sighting Sonic Youth as an influence, which you’ll get to sample in this particular set, they also wear the sound of other Brisbane pop-rock bands such as Iron On and Screamfeeder on their collective sleeves. They’ve just released their second EP, titled ‘If I Go Down I’m Taking You With Me’. It will also be their last release, as some of the members will be jetting off overseas to pursue other endeavors. But thou shall not be sad, but shall celebrate the incredible sounds of Go Go Fish. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of the Sonic Masala festival on the 14th of March, 2015. Spirit Bunny: Spirit Bunny are a relatively new group that formed in 2013 and have already started catching the attention of numerous blogs and have even had their music featured in a documentary. Not bad for a group in its infancy. The 3 members of the band, Kate Thomas, Cameron Smith and Joel Saunders, create a sound that is dance-worthy, but not as you’d expect. Armed with a drum kit and two Commodore 64’s using music software from the 80’s, certain key commands trigger musical notes that evoke 8-bit emotions and cold distorted melodies with bombastic drum hits, Spirit Bunny are a group that must be seen to be believed. Recorded by Branko Cosic. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room on the 13th of September, 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 20 March 2015. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

The Slow Push: Our feature set today comes from Brisbane group The Slow Push, a five piece who delve into the realm of post-punk and indie rock, with an eclectic sound driven by the hyperactive vocals and stage presence of their chief songwriter and front man, Chris Hetherington. The band as had a bit of a shifting lineup, but has settled with the likes of Meagan Chanel McKewn, Phil Driver, Scott Mercer and Dave Klokman, making up the current incarnation. They’re release a host of singles and EPs, and two long players – 2009’s ‘We Blame the Overachievers’ and returned in 2012 with ‘Misshappen Giants’. The live set we have for you today takes in a bit of both. It was recorded at The Beetle Bar in Brisbane in September 2013 when the band played with The Bell Divers and the Stress of Leisure. Recorded by Darragh Murray. Mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at The Beetle Bar, Brisbane. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 8 November 2013.
