While much progress has been made, the commercially-viable generation of fusion energy remains elusive. One important challenge is developing a range of specialized materials that can contain an extremely hot, radiation-emitting plasma in close proximity to ultracold superconducting magnets. Our guest this week is Jacob John of the UK Atomic Energy Authority, who studies how radiation damages materials. In conversation with Physics World's Matin Durrani, he talks about the near-oxymoronic materials requirements for fusion reactors and how they can be met.

While Pinch Perfect and its rotating Timed Research was a blast, Kyurem Fusion Raid Day left a bad taste in some Trainers' mouths. The inclusion of Reshiram and Zekrom in the Raid rotation hurt Trainers with less developed gameboards, as some reports saying that all the Raids in some rotations were not White or Black Kyurem, making the event fall flat until the opportunity arises to try it again during the next rotation. Adam brought up a great idea of putting Fusion Energy in Field Research for defeating Reshiram or Zekrom. This week brings High Zaptitude and a double release. Wattrel and Shiny Tadbulb make their debut during the event, giving two different Pokémon to chase that are available in different ways. You'll have to work to unlock Wattrel, as it is a Level 2 Reward of a Global Challenge, which confused some Trainers that didn't read the fine print. In all, this is a solid double header and a fun Electric event. Precious Pals and Precious Pals Taken Over will keep us busy in the week ahead, with Giovanni bringing Shadow Incarnate Forme Thundurus. We also have boosted Shinies for catching Goldeen, and hatching Espurr or Fidough. Make sure you remember to TM away Frustration before the event ends! Weekly Challenges added matchmaking and a bigger invite list this week. With the leveling grind being so popular, Weekly Challenges are a great way to fast track to Forever Friends. The Challenges themselves however, pose little to no actual challenge for moderate to hardcore Trainers. We spitball some ideas of how this mechanic can be developed to provide a tougher challenge while targeting Trainers of different skill and dedication levels. Finally we drop our top 5 gameplay loop lists and talk it through. From the Friendship Grind to Adam's Max Battle obsession, we dig into what keeps us engaged with the game and coming back for more. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson U.S. Christian statesmen call attention to persecution of Christians U.S. Republican Congressman Riley Moore of West Virginia and Republican Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri introduced a congressional resolution (H. Res. 594) condemning the widespread and ongoing persecution of Christians in Muslim-majority countries. On April 30th, Congressman Moore took a stand on the floor of the U.S. House. MOORE: “Today, I rise to address a grave and urgent crisis: the rampant persecution of Christians in Africa and the Middle East. Across these regions, our brothers and sisters in faith experience violence, displacement, and death for their belief in our Lord, Jesus Christ. No person or community should ever face such brutal conditions for acknowledging the name of Jesus. “In Nigeria, the situation is dire! More Christians face persecution there than any other nation combined. Since the outbreak of the Boko Haram's insurgency in 2009, more than 18,000 churches and 2,200 Christian schools have been destroyed in northern Nigeria alone. “More than 50,000 Christians have been killed, and more than 5 million have been displaced since 2009, making it the most dangerous country in the world for Christians.” The July 17th resolution highlights the horrific slaughter of Christians in Nigeria, pastors arrested in Algeria, the torture of Christians in Yemen, the imprisonment of Christians in Iran, and other persecution taking place in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. The statement urged U.S. President Donald Trump to “prioritize the protection of persecuted Christians in U.S. foreign policy, including in the President's diplomatic engagement with Muslim-majority countries and his efforts to stabilize the Middle East.”   It further urged him to “use all diplomatic tools available, including within trade and national security discussions and negotiations, to advance the protection of persecuted Christians worldwide and within Muslim-majority countries.” Colorado Christian bookstore files lawsuit against state over pronouns A Colorado Christian bookstore is suing the state for imposing recent changes to the Colorado Anti-Discrimination Act on businesses. Born Again Used Books in Colorado Springs has filed the suit through Alliance Defending Freedom, pointing out the infringement of the business' freedom of speech under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.   The suit states that under Colorado's laws, “It is now illegal for public accommodations, like independent bookstores, to refer to transgender-identifying individuals with biologically accurate language in their publications and customer interactions.” And "Born Again Used Books must instead profess an ideological view it opposes, contradict the message espoused in the very books it sells, and avoid explaining its Christian beliefs about human sexuality in store and online. In effect, the law requires this Christian bookstore to abandon its core religious beliefs." London Pentecostal church now allowed to share Christ in streets A London Pentecostal church has achieved a reversal of a ban on evangelistic outreach on the streets, reports The U.K. Standard. The local government had passed an Anti-Social Behavior, Crime and Policing Act forbidding the use of amplification equipment, the distribution of religious literature, and the display of Bible verses at the town center.  The Kingsborough Centre Church filed for judicial review, and obtained a reversal.   The City also paid the church's legal costs incurred during the ordeal. Isaiah 43:16-17 says, “Thus says the Lord,  Who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, Who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick.” Brazilian Supreme Court restricts former president Jair Bolsonaro Brazil's previous conservative president, Jair Bolsonaro, has come under severe restrictions by the Brazilian Supreme Court, reports Folha News. This comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods. Bolsonaro was forced to wear an electronic ankle bracelet. He cannot access social media accounts, and is prohibited from contacting his son who lives in the United States. The former Brazilian president has denied any responsibility for Trump's decision to impose tariffs, but also recently publicly thanked God for the election of Trump. Department stores are going bye-bye Department stores are a thing of the past.   Thirty years ago, these stores captured 9% of all retail sales. Today, they account for only a half percent. Meanwhile, e-commerce (like Amazon and walmart.com) now take 17.2% of total retail sales up from 5.4% of the pie in 2003. Dropping condominium prices a bad sign Condominium prices usually lead price declines on an imploding house market. This real estate is dropping like a rock in some big cities.  The big losers right now are Oakland, California and Austin Texas, with a 24% drop, followed by St. Petersburg, Florida, Fort Myers, Florida, Sarasota, Florida, San Francisco, California, Boise, Idaho, and Denver, Colorado. New president announced at G3 Ministries Dr. Scott Aniol has been appointed the new president of G3 Ministries after Josh Buice's removal from office earlier in the year. The elders of Pray's Mill Baptist Church had uncovered irrefutable evidence that Buice has, for the past three years, operated at least four anonymous social media accounts, two anonymous email addresses, and two Substack platforms. These accounts were used to publicly and anonymously slander numerous Christian leaders, including faithful pastors -- some of whom have spoken at G3 conferences. The G3 Church Network subscribes to the 1689 Second London Baptist Confession, and claims 200 U.S. churches in the network. Dr. Aniol obtained his Doctorate degree in Theological Studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Fusion energy technology could power the world And finally, fusion energy technology is advancing, and may soon be a reality — an unlimited source of power for the world. Earlier this year, China's Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak broke the world record for maintaining its artificial sun, and sustaining the hot plasma — confining plasma for an extraordinary 1,066 seconds, or about 18 minutes. A tokamak is a device that uses magnetic fields to confine and heat plasma, a state of matter where atoms are stripped of their electrons, to extreme temperatures, enabling nuclear fusion to occur.  A German fusion reactor at the Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, also just hit a record of 43 seconds of plasma heating, producing 1.8 gigajoules over a six-minute run. The sun is the original fusion reactor. We began our discussion with Dr. Bae with a focus on nuclear fusion power and space propulsion. The conversation covered Dr. Bae's research career, the challenges in developing fusion technology, and potential applications for space. We aimed to conclude with a consensus that both fusion and thorium-based fission could play key roles in future space propulsion, while fission would likely remain the more viable option for terrestrial energy needs. He structured his remarks into three areas: his pursuit of breakthrough science to advance nuclear fusion, his experience with a fusion startup, and his assessment of the current state of fusion power. His research journey began in the 1980s at UC Berkeley, where his PhD dissertation focused on plasma fusion power generation.Young described his research on antimatter and cluster fusion across several institutions, including SRI, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and the Air Force Rocket Propulsion Laboratory. He shared candid insights into the challenges of controversial fusion research and the difficulty of securing funding. Eventually, he joined a now-defunct fusion startup, where he continued exploring cluster and neutronic fusion reactions. He chose not to disclose the company's name.During his time at the startup in the 1990s, Young realized the company's funding was based on misleading claims about fusion development timelines. Although he honestly stated that practical fusion was still decades away, company leadership remained uninformed about the scientific challenges. Disillusioned, he left the company. He emphasized that while fusion is often marketed as a clean energy source, it produces significant radioactive waste and faces major technical hurdles—particularly in achieving high fuel gains and ignition temperatures.The conversation then turned to the current state and challenges of fusion energy. Young expressed skepticism about Helion Energy's projected 2028 commercial power launch, emphasizing the need for true scientific breakthroughs. He highlighted unresolved issues like plasma instability and the difficulty of achieving net energy output. He compared today's fusion landscape to the early days of transistor development, underscoring the importance of basic research and sustained funding.Fusion and fission's potential for space applications was another key topic. Young advocated for focusing fusion research on space propulsion, where its advantages in fuel efficiency and availability could be maximized. He felt terrestrial energy solutions were already mature by comparison. In response to Marshall's question about optimal magnetic field strength for fusion control, Young noted that while superconducting magnets help, they don't change the fundamental limits of fusion reactions.The discussion also covered thorium-based molten salt reactors, which Dr. Kothari described as a safer, more efficient alternative to traditional nuclear reactors. The group discussed the promise of using deuterium and helium-3 as fusion fuels in space, emphasizing the need for an in-space demonstration to validate the technology.Another highlight of the program was photon propulsion. Dr. Bae explained how regenerators can trap and amplify photon energy, potentially achieving higher thrust efficiencies than chemical thrusters. He also voiced concerns about the fusion field's slow progress despite heavy investment, suggesting a government-led panel be established to assess the real state of fusion R&D. John Jossy added that while venture capital is pouring into fusion, repeated promises of “fusion in 20 years” continue to raise doubts.During the Zoom meeting, our Zoom group—including Dr. Bae—discussed the future of large-scale energy. We expressed skepticism about the long-term viability of solar and wind power for global energy needs, instead pointing to fusion and thorium-based fission as more promising. They agreed that fusion propulsion would be essential for space travel, though Kothari highlighted challenges related to weight and infrastructure. The consensus was that fission remains the most practical near-term solution for Earth-based power, while fusion and thorium fission hold greater promise for future space applications.Our program explored the intersection of fusion energy and space civilization. Dr. Bae proposed writing an article on the topic. John Hunt requested a chart comparing break-even conditions for different fusion types, which Dr. Bae agreed to provide. Nuclear power is experiencing a notable revival in policy circles. The Trump administration has moved quickly on this front, drafting executive orders to accelerate plant construction, directing the Pentagon to explore reactor installations on military bases, and reshaping the regulatory landscape. A recent $900 million solicitation for small modular reactors (SMRs) has been modified to emphasize technical merit and streamline deployment.But can America's nuclear renaissance actually deliver? Traditional nuclear plants remain staggeringly expensive—the recent Vogtle reactors in Georgia arrived seven years late and $35 billion over budget (the kind of numbers that make even venture capitalists nervous). A dozen startups are betting smaller, modular designs can slash costs and deployment times, but they face the triple threat of regulatory uncertainty, NIMBY resistance, and an energy market still obsessed with quarterly returns. Yet the alignment of energy security needs, climate goals, and now AI's voracious power requirements creates a potential inflection point for nuclear technology.Joining us to explore these questions are Ed Petit de Mange, Director of Fuel Recycling at Oklo, whose next-generation microreactors can operate on recycled nuclear fuel; Patrick O'Brien, Director of Government Affairs at Holtec International, bringing decades of industry experience to the SMR revolution, Kathleen Nelson Romans, Head of Commercial Development at Aalo Atomics, whose compact reactors aim to serve rapidly deployable off-grid and microgrid applications, and Emmet Penney, energy writer and Senior Fellow at FAI, who provides critical context on nuclear's role in our energy transition.
