Do you ever have the experience of being solid on a part, as long as the leader is singing it, but then when they leave to teach another part, you lose it? You'll hear me doing just that! :) We talk about building a bank of nourishing words for hard times -- and Kate shares a story about something that shook her certainty and ease with life, and how that made her vow not to judge people. She observes how giving time and a safe place to make mistakes makes it possible for most people to learn to sing, like almost all people learn to drive eventually. Kate Thomas Kate Thomas is leading the transformation of marketing content at PayPal from hand-crafted web pages to structured content stored in a headless CMS. Like many organizational-transformation projects, this one has highlighted both the benefits of structuring content and the challenges of getting content authors to work in new ways. We talked about: the migration of the PayPal marketing content from hand-crafted web pages to structured content managed in a headless CMS her prior work at PayPal modeling their legal content how they structured their content and ascribed meaning to it with metadata the main benefits of structuring content, foremost among them speed to market, the ability to scale, and to more efficient content localization her first foray into structured content when she worked on a developer portal how the governance issues she dealt with in content roles in higher education and government, as well as the governance processes she saw in agency roles, led to her interest in structured content the operational transition from hand-building pages to the new structured-content operation and governance framework the importance of the authoring experience in a new system like this the role of content modeling in her work to structure the content how their new structured-content model let them create new pages about business practices in Ukraine in just a few days Kate's bio Kate Thomas is a content architect at PayPal. She has led content teams in Australia, the UK and the US, delivering workable, scalable content solutions for government, universities and global brands over a 20+ year career slaying the content dragon. Video Here's the video version of our conversation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUd8s4b-zgU Podcast intro transcript This is the Content Strategy Insights podcast, episode number 117. The benefits of structured content are now well known: improved consistency, the ability to scale, quicker content delivery, more governable content operations, efficient localization of content for other countries and cultures. But even the most progressive and successful companies are still working to fully adopt this important content practice. In this interview, Kate Thomas shares insights that she has gleaned as they've structured the marketing content at PayPal. Interview transcript Larry: Hi, everyone. Welcome to episode number 117 of the Content Strategy Insights Podcast. I am really happy today to have with us, Kate Thomas. Kate is a content architect at PayPal, and she's working on some really interesting structured content and CMS work there. So welcome, Kate. Tell the folks a little bit more about what you're up to these days. Kate: Hi, Larry. Thanks for having me. Yes, at PayPal we've been working for the past couple of years on moving all the marketing content on paypal.com from hand coded, handcrafted pages into a structured content framework delivered in a headless CMS. Larry: Nice. And so have you been involved from the very start with that? Is it kind of your baby, this project, or? Kate: Kind of my baby in the sense that I was asked to work on it and I thought, well, that's now my baby. It's someone else bigger baby, but I'm the midwife, I suppose, of the content model in a way. So we had new management come in and head up paypal.com. When you look at paypal.com, there's lots of things going on. So when I'm talking about it, all I'm talking about is the marketing content. So on paypal.com you can also get help content, you can get legal content and there's a whole lot of campaign pages that you know exist but they're sort of outside of the core marketing pages. So the first thing is to qualify we're talking about the core content that we deliver in marketing. Kate: And management change, sort of the person in charge of .

There is a saying that someone is "eagle-eyed" if they spot minute details - and if I asked you to name an animal with good eyesight, you'd probably think of an owl or an eagle. But in this episode we'll hear that the largest relative eye size of any vertebrate is found in an entirely different group of animals - frogs and toads. Kate Thomas, who is a postdoctoral researcher at the Natural History Museum in London, surveyed eye size in hundreds of frogs and toads and asked how eye size has evolved in this diverse group. Why do frogs and toads have such large eyes? How does eye size affect vision in the first place? And did you know that many frogs can see colors in the dark? This book not only raises vital questions about the importance of gender when analysing organised crime but also gives a voice to these women to show that they are not purely victims but also have their own agency. It questions the dominant lens so far used to investigate, collect, prosecute and analyse organised crime that focuses solely on the men. It is time for things to change. This is an introduction to White Tara practice based on a sadhana that Khenpo Sherab Sangpo arranged for his meditation community, Bodhicitta Sangha | Heart of Enlightenment Institute in Minneapolis. "Noble White Tara" is a spiritual practice dedicated to increasing one's own or another person's health, wisdom, and merit; practiced especially to benefit the long life of one's teacher and lineage masters. Lady Tara has made the aspiration to swiftly help anyone who requests her compassionate presence. Tibetans call on her aid for both spiritual and mundane matters and these teachings are meant to help you generate more compassion, loving kindness, and the essence of bodhicitta; and to support you and your community during joyful and difficult times. Eugene is a surprising hotbed of video games. "Tribes," "Godzilla: Destroy All Monster's Melee," and "Red Baron" are just a few games to be developed in its local studios. While larger studios like Pipeworks tend to employee the most people, there's also an active indie scene that is nowhere more apparent than at the second annual Indie Game Con. Hundreds of people filled Lane Community College in early October to play new titles, from space shooters like "XO" and "Star Mazer" to fantasy games like "Villagers & Heroes" to the more unusual, like a game of dueling narwhals called "Fail Whale" and a game of dueling tongues called "Smooth Operator."On today's show we talk to developers about making games and getting game face on for taking their creations out into the world.Meet our guests: Ted Brown is the director of Eugene-based Indie Game Con. A veteran of Zynga and Buzz Monkey Software, Brown own and operates game studio Oreganik LLC, which developed the app games "Chess Heroes" and "Epic Skater." He’s also on the board of the trade group Oregon Game Association. Michael Jones is a Eugene-based sound designer and composer who has been creating audio for games for more than a decade. He chairs the Eugene chapter of the International Game Developers Association, and he’s director of professional development for BitForest, a networking group for Eugene-area game makers. He also composed all the music used in the show. Britt Brady, lead designer and art director of Cowboy Color Games, has lived in Eugene for about nine years. Involved in the game community for the past two years, he says he’s more of an “abstract creative” than a programmer. Cowboy Color’s game of shooting and blocking, "Charge Shot," was prototyped during a game jam. Cullen Dwyer, lead programmer of Cowboy Color Studio, had only recently moved to Eugene when he partnered with Brady to develop "Charge Shot." Kate Thomas, producer and co-founder at Portland-based Beardo Games, developed "Smooth Operator" with programmer Chris Harback and artist Miles Neilson. The trio prototyped the game where you compete to be the better kisser for the Ludum Dare global game jam in 2013. Damon Slye is one of the godfathers of the Eugene gaming community. After co-founding the pioneering game studio Dynamix in 1984, he helped produce games for the Commodore 64 computer and game companies Activision and Electronic Arts. He left the company and the industry in 1994 (Dynamix was acquired by Sierra Online in 1990.) He came back in 2007 with Mad Otter Games. Currently he’s developing an online multi-player fantasy game called "Villagers & Heroes" that emphasizes social interactivity. Mad Otter has also acquired the rights to "Red Baron" and is planning a reboot.Plus a cast of hundreds of gleeful developers, players, and others who wandered through Lane Community College's downtown campus in Eugene that day. Go Go Fish: What started out as a new project between self-confessed music geeks Scott Mercer & Ash Shanahan in 2011, has blossomed into a harmonious four-piece garage-pop outfit that goes by the name of ‘Go Go Fish’, adding Angela Hibbard and Murray Bowler to the fold a year later to fill out their desired sound. Sighting Sonic Youth as an influence, which you’ll get to sample in this particular set, they also wear the sound of other Brisbane pop-rock bands such as Iron On and Screamfeeder on their collective sleeves. They’ve just released their second EP, titled ‘If I Go Down I’m Taking You With Me’. It will also be their last release, as some of the members will be jetting off overseas to pursue other endeavors. But thou shall not be sad, but shall celebrate the incredible sounds of Go Go Fish. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Recorded at the Greenslopes Bowls Club as part of the Sonic Masala festival on the 14th of March, 2015. Spirit Bunny: Spirit Bunny are a relatively new group that formed in 2013 and have already started catching the attention of numerous blogs and have even had their music featured in a documentary. Not bad for a group in its infancy. The 3 members of the band, Kate Thomas, Cameron Smith and Joel Saunders, create a sound that is dance-worthy, but not as you’d expect. Armed with a drum kit and two Commodore 64’s using music software from the 80’s, certain key commands trigger musical notes that evoke 8-bit emotions and cold distorted melodies with bombastic drum hits, Spirit Bunny are a group that must be seen to be believed. Recorded by Branko Cosic. Mixed by Cameron Smith. Recorded at The Waiting Room on the 13th of September, 2014. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 8-9pm, Friday 20 March 2015.
