Melissa Lucashenko is a Miles Franklin award winning author of Bundjalung and European heritage. Her novels include Killing Darcy, Mullumbimby and Too Much Lip. Today we're going to be discovering her latest, Edenglassie. In the 1850's Meanjin/Brisbane is a mix of people from across the world, some transported for hard time, others drawn to the region for economic gain. Since the invaders arrived the local Yagara people have viewed them with suspicion and curiosity, unsure whether they might ever be able to regain their ancestral lands. Mulanyin has come to the area now known as Edenglassie and there he has discovered the beautiful Nita. Torn between his love and his home Mulanyin must navigate his path into manhood and the fraught times he finds himself in. In 2024 Meanjin/Brisbane is on the verge of two hundred years if settler colonial occupation. That might mean more to Granny Eddie if she wasn't stuck in the hospital waiting for whatever it is these doctors do. Eddie is more than a hundred years old and she's got a few stories to tell about the city. But that doesn't mean she'll give up her secrets easily and certainly not to the first white guy who asks. Edengalssie weaves two tales separated by time but bound by place. Melissa Lucashenko takes us back to the beginnings of the occupied lands around Maiwar, which we now know as the Brisbane River. She reminds us that the land was not unoccupied and in fact these are the traditional lands of the Jagera and Turrball people. Against the backdrop of struggle for dominance we meet Mulanyin and Nita. what follows is ostensibly a love story set to the rhythm of a land that is poised for violence. Mulanyin is certain of his love for Nita but he is also eager to prove himself and unsure of the ways of the white people who are ignorant of the law and the land. Mulanyin and Nita will pursue their love but they must do so in a world that may not want them to succeed. All these stories are so much history to the residents of Granny Eddie's world but she knows the truth. That doesn't mean she's going to tell it straight. As Granny Eddie's tales of early Brisbane bring her fame and notoriety she watches her niece Winona and her Doctor Johnny play out their own courting rituals. Johnny's only recently discovered his own blak heritage and that won't fly for Winona. She's sick of people claiming heritage they haven't earned and isn't going to make it easy on him. Edenglassie is a thought provoking, disarming and at times hilarious novel. Through the contrasting narratives Lucashenko effectively overthrows simplistic views of early colonial interventions and reclaims the story on behalf of the people whose land was stolen. She gives us a time when perhaps history may have taken a different direction and allows us to understand the vicissitudes of time and power that shaped the world we live in today. Fast forward to 2024 and Lucashenkpo reminds of the very real and ongoing history those events have created. Through Granny Eddie and particularly in the sparring between Winona and Johnny we see the ongoing pain and struggle to reconcile the past with a present and a future that does not tell the truth. Edenglassie is a tremendous novel and one well worth the reading.

WHALEHOUSE & GUNK: Live at Netherworld, Fortitude Valley, 30 October 2022 This is episode 414 of Live Delay and we're featuring two sets from two Meanjin Punk Rock legends, WHALEHOUSE and GUNK, both one word - all caps. This recording was taken at a special reunion Halloween party held in honour of GUNK on the 30th of October in 2022. WHALEHOUSE are a relatively new local band, imagine an unhinged all-female Devo. They're fun, they're weird and they have a thing for large subaquatic fauna. This episode's second set is from local Riot Grrl punk band GUNK, they initially made waves in Meanjin-Brisbane's scene back in 2012 with the release of their self-titled EP and 2013 album ‘Sugarsoap', GUNK had since broken up and remained on hiatus for years before the reunion gig we were lucky enough to record in October of 2022. Recorded by Scott Mercer, Dave Arens & Matt Hall Mixed by Dave Arens Special thanks to live engineer Ben Gibson Show production, engineering & host: Matt Hall Audio producer: Dave Arens Originally aired via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 15 January 2023
2022 Year in Review: Our last episode for the year is a compilation of the absolute best tracks broadcast in 2022 on 4zzz's own Live Delay program, the show dedicated to delivering the best of Meanjin-Brisbane's live music scene from the live stage to the mixing desk to your living room/car/wherever you catch your 4zzz's. Many of the broadcast's this year have been hidden gems from years long gone and pre-pandemic shows, but a few green shoots are emerging from the last few years of COVID chaos and live music is officially back in town. Our year in review episode for 2022 features tracks from An Horse, Little Scout, Bad Sext, Double Bummer, Monet's Pond, Ed Kuepper, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Some Jerks, Full Power Happy Hour, Waveney Yasso, Bob Weatherall, Halfway and William Barton. Special thanks to the legion of volunteers that it takes to produce this program each year, we'll see you all next year! Land Forces is the largest land based weapons expo in the Southern Hemisphere. Wage Peace is organising, for the second year, a festival of resistance from October 1-7 in Meanjin-Brisbane. We speak with Walpiri elder Ned Tjampijinpa Hargraves about the Karrinjarla Muwajarri campaign that is a calling for a ceasefire and no police guns. The campaign started after 19 year old Kumanjayi Walker was shot dead by a Police Constable Zacharly Rolfe in Yuendumu in 2019. Rolfe was charged with murder and the case went to the supreme court but in March 2022 Rolfe was aquitted. The community is still seeking justice. Uncle Ned has taken the Karrinjarla Muwajarri campign to Meanjin-Brisbane for Disrupt Land Forces because the main manufacturer of police bullets is the company NIOA, a major sponsor for Land Forces 2022. NIOA formed a partnership with Winchester in 2021 and together the two companies dominate the law enforcement market. In 2021 they successfully tender for the bulk of armaments supply to the NT police worth a total of $1.8 billion. We also speak with peace & anti-military campaigner and event organiser Andy Paine about what's planned for the Disrupt Land Forces 2022 festival of resistance.

Our thanks to Michaela for recording this audio. Since her teens, Zelda Grimshaw has been a grassroots activist for earth rights, human rights and is now a co-organiser of Disrupt Land Forces. Disrupt Land Forces is a project forged between October 2020 and June 2021 to resist the weapons industry and ongoing militarisation in so-called Australia. As part of 3CR's daily coverage of anti-militarisation efforts this week, Zelda joins us to speak about Disrupt Land Forces' upcoming action responding to the largest land based weapons expo in the Southern Hemisphere, which will be held in Meanjin-Brisbane this October. Today we will be discussing the intersectional relationships between patriarchy, colonialism and militarised harm and the ways that nonviolence and radical respect can strengthen our resistance. We are joined by Dr Ruth DeSouza, a health researcher, clinician, nursing educator at RMIT university and podcast creator of Birthing & Justice. The film will screen at Cinema Nova in Carlton this coming Friday 30th September, Saturday 1st October and Sunday 2nd October (details here). There will be special panels on Friday with Professor Gary Foley, Lidia Thorpe and Tony Birch, and on Sunday with Professor Gary Foley, Rulla Kelly Mansell and Rachel Maza. During today's show, we mentioned a rally that will be happening today at Federation Square from 6-7;30PM Naarm/Melbourne to show solidarity with the people of Iran in the wake of 22 year old Iranian Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini's death in police custody. Á Tea For Two is a place for the types of real chats that happen over a cuppa not all structured like a proper interview, just a place to let what is in the space between two creatives come up. The intimacy of a cuppa.... where the conversation can go anywhere?I am honoured to have my friend, neighbour and fellow Vyva family member Luka Lesson join us this month for a real life Cuppa together in the bus and not just across the internet. Luka is an incredible poet, rapper, activist and god damn good human. We have got to know each other as neighbours in our small town. Although we were close in kilometres, the both of us have toured a lot and a lot overseas so ships passing in the night, and it took Covid to slow us down to really spend more time together. But then again in a small town, I suppose it was only a matter of time before our rebellious souls paths would have crossed anyways. From the first show I saw of Lukas about 4 years ago until now, I have always been struck by how powerful Truth emanates from Luka. His words are powerful, but equally powerful is with conviction in which he holds himself in those words and truths on and off stage. Over our Cuppa we talk about these truths and how he got there. We talk about Barry's Tea and Greek Mountain Tea and Yogurt. We spoke about Greek Culture, Irish Culture, Museums and the stuff they steal, the power of the pen and author and who holds the pen and how both of us came to writing from the perspectives we write from. As well as some humorous things that have happened on and off stage. I know ye will love his way of putting words together and his powerful perspectives on many things which we learn came to him from an early age. He is poetry in motion. I love when a chat just naturally goes where it wants to go and this was one of those beautiful moments where some things wanted to be discussed in the space between Luka and I and it just emerged. A former Australian Poetry Slam Champion (2011), Luka has featured at the mecca for slam poetry: the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe (NYC) multiple times, performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and toured with respected UK rappers Akala & Lowkey. Luka has released two collections of poetry independently: The Future Ancients (2013) & Antidote (2015) and two poetic rap albums: Please Resist Me (2012) & EXIT (2014).Luka has always used poetry and rap writing workshops as a form of activism, helping young people to articulate and perform their work for the past 15 years in education centres worldwide, amplifying countless marginalised voices in the process. Luka's poems and rap verses are being studied on official school curriculums throughout Australia, and unofficially by rebellious educators worldwide.Support the show
