Today Eric and Glenn start Part 1 of a two-parter on the 2023 Report of the Texas Forensic Science Commission dealing with a latent print case. First the guys do some catching up and play Where in the Whorld. They also discuss an email from Simon Cole and inquire on the impact of the recent AI paper on fingerprints. Then they discuss the TFSC report that followed an investigation into a complaint filed against the latent print contractor(s) in the Joseph Webster case. The webster case was a homicide cold case that eventually broke with a CODIS hit and a subsequent apparent bloody palm print at the scene of the crime. Initially the palm print was not identified to Webster, but then after the CODIS hit occurred to Webster and a second person, the latent print evidence was re-visited in 2013, and an identification was declared (pursuant to reviewing additional palm print exemplars of Webster). Testimony occurred in 2016 by a project manager, but not any of the original examiners. In 2020, a contractor for the defense was hired to review the case and several examiners were unable to verify the identification. This conflict, as well as a review of the testimony, sparked a complaint to the TFSC in the case. The guys review the facts and details of the case in Part 1. If you were on the bus or in the grocery store and passed by someone speaking loudly on speaker phone, is it intrusive to offer them a thought about their conversation? Or has that person indirectly included you in their conversation?   I once read an article about a woman who works with deaf students. She had to explain to them that if you're a hearing person, then hearing is not something you can choose to do. It's like smelling - if there's a smell in the room, you're going to smell it. And I wonder sometimes if people realize that when they are so loud in a public space.   “We assume a sort of privacy if we're around people we don't know,” says Simon Cole, CEO of Amphora Research Systems and one my guests on this edition of Quick Hits.   “Some people just like to be heard,” added consultant Dr. Bob Choat. “There is that ego thing…But a lot of people are also not self-aware that this is happening and maybe if we let them know, we could help them to tone it down.”   Under what circumstances should we butt in? Are there times when it's merited or does it always invite unnecessary conflict?   Career Polish founder Lisa McDonald suggested that it also matters whether the person you've overheard is having their conversation on the phone or with others physically around him. “If it's in person, I'm more likely to butt in. But if it's on the phone, I'm really good at pretending that I don't hear things.”   I had a wonderful time discussing this tricky subject with these three brilliant minds. I hope you find our discussion engaging and enjoyable.   Are you likely to butt in or pretend you can't hear?   Connect with the panelists: Lisa McDonald: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fearlesslisam/ Dr. Bob Choat: https://www.linkedin.com/in/bobchoat/ Simon Coles: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sjcoles/ Dr Robyn Odegaard: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robynodegaard/   Want a summary of the Quick Hits I post every week, plus the links to the LinkedIn pages of each of the panelist to show up in your in-box every week? The advent of DNA testing has transformed the criminal legal system since 1989. For the first time, DNA testing provided absolute proof that people were convicted of crimes that they did not commit. The National Registry of Exonerations has tracked over 3200 exonerations since 1989, by creating a dataset and narrative they have been able to study common factors, statistically analyze, and have allowed us to better understand flaws in the criminal legal system that lead to wrongful convictions. This week on everyday injustice we talk with Director Simon Cole, who talks about their work and what we have learned from wrongful convictions. Listen to what the data says about government misconduct, forensic science, false confessions and eyewitness misidentification.

We all want to feel like we are part of a community. Sometimes we naturally click with a group of people; sometimes we find that need for acceptance leads us to diminish our sense of self in order to gain the approval of the group.  The latter case is especially common in the corporate world, as my panelists — sales expert Kevin Wash, Zen Freight Solutions Founder Racquelle Pakutz and Better Conversations founder Simon Cole — clearly describe in this edition of Quick Hits.  Bosses and managers can pressure employees to suppress their individuality in order to fit the company culture, like gardeners in a poppy field who cut down the tallest flowers to make the field look even.  The pressure to conform is especially strong when a paycheck is at stake. But are there times when it's worthwhile to speak up even if it goes against the position of management?  Can belonging only happen when people are empowered to fully express their individuality? Listen in as we discuss these and other questions. Get married, buy a house, raise a family. For many of us, that's the expected life trajectory. Are we entitled to meet that expectation? If many follow the typical trajectory, including having two or more children, then we drive human civilization right off a cliff. On an overpopulated planet, does society have an obligation to make parenthood possible, practical, convenient, and/or affordable to all? Public policy on the table in the U.S. today is designed to make it easier for couples to have children. Ethicist Philip Cafaro joins us to discuss the motivations behind these policies and the moral questions about whether people are “entitled” to have children on an overpopulated planet. In this episode, we hear some unenlightened statements about U.S. population from U.S. Senator Mitt Romney, including inviting listeners to conclude U.S. population is declining (it is not), and a healthy dose of depopulation panic. Cafaro is professor of philosophy at Colorado State University and an affiliated faculty member of CSU's School of Global Environmental Sustainability. He's also written a couple of books about human overpopulation, and he is co-founder of The Overpopulation Project. He has written several books on meditation and mindfulness, the human experience, and relationship, and sees the insights of Martin Buber on human relating and existence as one of the foundation stones of his philosophy. Having been a musician since childhood he brings musical elements - the form, the immediacy, the flow - into all his work, and makes it a theme which anyone can use.  He calls it “musicking” - with a “k”, but it needs no previous musical experience.  His latest book “just BE here - the guide to Musicking Mindfulness” explains: “The ‘k’ is there because it may be, but it doesn’t have to be about making music in the way we conventionally think of it in any of our various cultures."
