The Awakened Man
Why Inner Child Trauma Work DOESN'T Work

The Awakened Man

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 26:24

1. Inner child work, popularized by coaches and gurus, is a recycled concept from 190 years of psychology that has limitations and may not be the most effective approach to personal growth. 2. Focusing on inner child work and personal development may not lead to worldly success, and true growth requires engagement with the present. 3. Past experiences and theories can be misleading when analyzing current issues due to imperfect memory, cherry-picking data, and overapplication of single theories. 4. Understanding the cause of pain isn't enough to alleviate it, taking action is. 5. Mental health diagnoses often lack clear causes and scientific basis, leading to vague labels and over-pathologization of common issues. 6. ADHD is not a proven medical condition, but rather a label used to justify medicating millions of American children, lacking evidence linking it to a specific brain disease. 7. Focusing on the present, not the past, is key to solving problems and achieving lasting solutions. 8. To achieve a lasting solution to personal problems, one must work on resolving them in the present, learn from them, and apply those lessons to the future. Here are the 2 categories to sort the insights: Looking backwards to childhood experiences can be problematic, as it focuses attention on the past rather than the present and future. ⚠️ "We have no work excavating the past because when we do inner child work, we're literally blocking ourselves from engaging with the present." There's a fallacy in social science research called "post hoc ergo propter hoc," which means assuming that because one event happened before another, the early event caused the later one. Every ingredient from our past may have a bearing on our current issues, but it's essential to question whether they truly have an impact or are just coincidental. ⚠️ The danger is that once you have a theory, you can just pick out the items that fit your theory and disregard the rest. The only way to have a true lasting solution to current personal problems is to work at it in the present, resolve it in the present, and apply what's learned to the future. Knowing the cause of pain doesn't stop the pain, but taking action to address it does. Knowing the cause of our psychic pain but having no Avenue to reduce it will actually make some of us feel even worse. "The difference between literal and metaphoric illness has been blurred by too many coaches and gurus who read a book or two." Refusing treatment for a DSM diagnosis can lead to another diagnosis, "non-compliance with treatment disorder", as pointed out by Jord Peterson. There isn't one shred of medical evidence that ADHD is caused by any specific brain disease.

When I first started coaching I was introduced to the idea of: Meeting the client where they are. This idea being both a cornerstone of coaching,And a practice that involves attuning to the person in front of you in such a way that opens up a possibility of working with them wherever they are in their development or growth journey. While it may sound simple enough, there is a profound depth and precision to meeting someone in this way. In part this is because whether it's a client, a friend, a colleague, a partner, a child, a parent, etc There are a myriad of factors that can influence where they are on their path:The conversation you've been engaged in with them to that pointWhat is arising in them in the moment (thoughts, feelings, sensations)What is arising in youWhat is arising in the relationshipTheir past experiencesYour perceptions, beliefs, biasesThe list goes on...And this practice of attunement is one of the things that today's guest, renowned therapist Dr. Jacob Ham does exceptionally well which you'll hear in, and throughout, our conversation as we dive into a deep exploration of growth, curiosity, love, and the art of living in the present moment. Dr. Ham is the Director of the Center for Child Trauma and Resilience and Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Equal part therapist, speaker, trainer, program developer, Dr. Ham applies an open-hearted, empathic approach to all aspects of his work, ensuring that the needs of patients, audiences, and trainees are prioritized and met in the most meaningful ways. He specializes in using authentic relationships to self and others as paths to healing in trauma and other forms of mental suffering including the self-harm of fear, doubt, loathing and despair. To learn more please visit drjacobham.comIn today's conversation:Dr. Ham's story about how he came to work in the way he does - including his general disillusionment with a lot of traditional approaches and paradigms in therapeutic treatment. What is this moment calling for? The role of this question in his work. And how an expertise in trauma and a deep contemplative practice inform his ability to skillfully offer what is needed. The wisdom that can be found in contraction, closing off, and shutting down. Practices for significantly improving communication in relationships. How to work with anger in more skillful ways when it arisesAsking for what you need in relationship and why he thinks this isn't always such a beneficial practiceThe possibility of responding to hate with loveLearning to not be so afraid of the pain that comes with growthThe practice of surrender and embracing the growth processAnd the role loving awareness plays in growth, healing, and his work as a therapistOf all the interviews we've released on the show I found this to be one of the most moving and profound. It is such an honor to be able to shine a light on the incredible work Dr. Ham is doing in the world. I hope you enjoy the time with him as much as I did.    Did you find this episode inspiring? Validating the survivor's experience:• “Think positive”• “Stop dwelling on the past”• “Forgiveness is an essential part of healing”•“Family is everything” For people recovering from complex trauma, these ideas can cause more harm than good. Today's guest, Nate Postlethwait, is here to share a fresh perspective on healing from the shame and pain of childhood trauma, which validates the experience of the survivor.Nate is a trauma healing advocate who has built a community of hundreds of thousands of people, offering unique insights to many of the narratives that go unspoken from the survivor's perspective. His courses and online support group around inner child work has been a much needed connection for those who had a difficult time connecting current pain to past memories. In this episode, we discuss topics such as complex PTSD, the impact on the nervous system, inner child work, shame, forgiveness, and the role of family in healing. Nate emphasizes the importance of individualized healing processes and the need to challenge societal expectations. He also shares insights and empowerment for those on a healing journey. Nate's community and resources are highlighted as valuable support for trauma survivors.TakeawaysComplex PTSD is a long-term impact of traumatic experiences, often experienced in childhood, that alters the way individuals see and experience life. The impact of complex trauma on the nervous system can lead to heightened responses, dissociation, and a constant state of survival mode.Inner child work is a powerful tool for healing from trauma, allowing individuals to develop a relationship with different parts of themselves and provide relief and understanding.Shame is a common response to trauma, often stemming from a lack of understanding and coping mechanisms during the traumatic experience. The notion that 'family is everything' can be harmful and invalidating for those who have experienced trauma within their family dynamics. The pressure to forgive can be harmful and shaming, used as a tool of controlBuilding interoceptive awareness and understanding the nervous system's responses can aid in healing from trauma.Communities and support systems play a crucial role in healing, providing validation, connection, and empowerment.Individualized healing processes and self-empowerment are key in navigating the journey of healing from trauma. If you'd like to learn more about nervous system dysregulation, which goes hand-in-hand with C-PTSD, head to nervoussystemschool.com/innerchild to access your free training video. If you enjoy our work, we'd love it if you could take a minute to follow us wherever you get your podcasts, and leave a rating and review. You may want to check out that episode first, then come back to this follow-up episode. In this follow-up episode, Jordan shares about the devastating loss of his older brother to a fentanyl overdose only a week after we recorded his first episode. In the time since, Jordan has been able to maintain his sobriety. However, in this episode, he goes into more depth on the impact the loss of his best friend, followed by the loss of his brother, had on him - and his sobriety. Sobriety aside, Jordan also shares how his spiritual beliefs have been shaped by the loss of his best friend, Chase, and his older brother, Josh. And what he looks forward to in the future. Jordan is currently traveling Europe after living in Los Angeles for 11 years. He shares how leaving the glitz, glam, and city life has offered him the opportunity and experience of a lifetime. And maybe, for the first time, the time and space to discover how he wishes to define what success means to him moving forward. On Tuesday's show: We check in with News 88.7 reporter Lucio Vasquez about the latest efforts to find the man suspected of shooting and killing five people in a home in Cleveland, Texas early Saturday. Police say 38-year-old Francisco Oropesa fled the area. Investigators continue to search for him, and authorities are offering $80,000 for information about his whereabouts. Also this hour: A bill passed by the Texas Senate would require the Ten Commandments be displayed in public school classrooms. Another would let school boards adopt prayer or religious study periods. We discuss what's motivating these bills and how courts might interpret them. And Sam Houston State University professor Sinem Akay-Sullivan trains professionals in her native Turkey to help children traumatized by earthquakes there earlier this year.

[Spoiler Alert] Grace discusses the show Save Me (OCN, 2017) starring Seo Yea-ji, Ok Taec-yeon, Jo Sung-ha and Woo Do-hwan. Grace analyzes the show's illustration of religious fanaticism to critique South Korean cults that take advantage of emotionally vulnerable civilians. She also examines South Korea's conflicting viewpoint around mental illness—how patients suffering from mental disorder and their families are unwilling to accept a clinical diagnosis from psychologists but willing to seek faith-based healing from shamans, folk medicine, herbal medicine, and religious cults. Grace empathizes with how hard it is for South Koreans to feel safety when seeking psychological counseling in a country that still stigmatizes mental illness. In her opening monologue, Grace celebrates her 36th birthday by indulging in a week-long journey of healing rituals with two reiki sessions, two therapy sessions, dream analyses and more. Grace's guest is clinical psychologist Dr. Jacob Ham who also serves as the Director of Center for Child Trauma and Resilience at Mount Sinai in New York. Grace and Dr. Ham discuss how to fill a gap by adding healing to the discourse of modern Korean traumas, the show Sky Castle, survival parenting, epigenetics through dreams, how dreams and zodiacs serve us, Indigenous shamanism, Goethe's light theory, yin and yang, fear of mushrooms and worms, the fascinating ways that our subconscious minds reach for our loved ones, and facing our dark matter with curiosity, presence and loving awareness. When we're little, we don't know anything different than how we've been raised so for a lot of us, until we grow up and get into 12-step recovery programs, we don't understand that what we endured as children was abusive and dyscuntional. Until we realize this and no longer adhere to the rigid beliefs we were taught as children, we remain stuck in this loop of dysfunction. This week's episode 186 of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast is part 2 of the origins and effects of adult child trauma. Support the show by becoming a Patreon member! In this episode of the Fragmented to Whole Podcast, I'm sharing more excerpts from the book Adult Children of Alcoholics, affectionately known as the “big red book,” and sharing the wisdom i've gained through my own journey on how you can begin putting the puzzle pieces together yourself and healing your inner child. Listen back to part one of this episode to hear more excerpts from the book and more about my journey and perspective of understanding adult child trauma. The excerpts I cover in part 2 of this episode include:The underlying terror we hold for the consequences of disobeying the rigid beliefs we've been taught. Believing we are inadequate of giving and undeserving of receiving love and making this unworthiness the definition of who we are. Dysfunction leading to feeling powerless and alienated. Diving into the feeling and unfeeling self to protect ourselves from the disorienting effects of living with confusion and pain. Making a change by believing change is possible and challenging the authority that our addiction has over us.Finding unity and mutual support through the group aspect of 12-step recovery to fight against the effects of abuse by authority. We are all beloved children of God. We are all deserving of love from God, from other human beings, and from our families. We didn't get that love from our families because they weren't capable of giving it to us, not because we were undeserving of receiving it. This can be anything from emotional invalidation or being gaslighted by our families, pretending things that are happen aren't happening, or avoiding something big and horrendous happening and acting like everything is fine. Every human being experiences trauma to some degree. We don't have to experience "Big T Traumas" for those experiences to leave an imprint on our hearts and bodies. At age 5, Kimberly had such an experience after witnessing her father physically abuse her mother while she and her older sibling were present. And, because they were in a vehicle, there was nowhere to run or hide. Afterward, her father dropped off her mother and sibling at a family member's home. On the other hand, Kimberly was taken by her father to sleep elsewhere and away from her family, with terror in her body and fear in her heart. From that day forward, Kimberly's life changed forever. Kimberly was left in the care of her father's brother and his wife, where Kimberly would go from a family unit of four and having an older sibling she adored to becoming an only child. She became estranged from her immediate biological family in an instant. Her older sister remained with their parents and experienced the addition of more siblings that came along over the years that Kim had no part of, too, which only added to her grief over the years.Defining moments like these shape the rest of our lives and impact who we become and how we show up in the world. Kimberly had to learn how to build her self-esteem, that self-love is the best love, and that she was worthy of love no matter what she did or didn't do for others. Kimberly shares a lesson her adopted father shared with her: "Stand for something, or you'll fall for anything." I believe Kimberly did just that by finding and sharing her voice. He felt unwanted, unloved, unvalued, and didn't believe he had a purpose in life. Today's guest is a friend whose story exemplifies the purpose of this podcast—Hope. This episode is for anyone out there who has ever believed that they just didn't measure up or fit in. Most of us have had experiences like that in our childhood, but it's not just children who struggle with self-worth.  As adults, we are supposed to have it all together, right?  We can't appear weak, uncertain, or that we don't have a place in society. The truth is, most of us have areas in our lives that we don't want to talk about.  Maybe it is secret sin or simply that we don't want people to know the truth—that we really don't have it all together.  In fact, if we were honest some of us would say that our lives are spinning out of control.  We may be on the brink of disaster, but for 90 minutes on Sunday mornings, we could be nominated for an Emmy by appearing “normal” at church. After all, as Christians, we are not allowed to have personal struggles. You need to hear this…YOU. ARE. NOT. ALONE.You are about to hear Ed's story.  It started as a young child but continued for much of his young life.  He should not have had to endure it.  Life should have been better. Maybe you can relate to Ed. Ed Grable is the Connect Director at Gateway Church in Findlay, Ohio. He can look back as an adult and see that God had a plan even through the hurt and pain. I'm thankful that Ed is willing to share his story so that others can have hope. What you are about to hear has been shared with only a handful of people, but Ed has changed lives and will continue to change lives for eternity because of the HOPE he has in Jesus.Contact Ed Grable:  EGrable@GatewayEPC.org------------------------Behind The Mike website: https://BehindTheMikePodcast.comEmail:  Mike@BehindTheMike.netRate & Review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/behind-the-mike-conversations-of-hope/id1491102872 Support the Show! https://buymeacoffee.com/TheMikePodcastSupport the show

The inner child is a very important piece to inner work, personal growth, development and healing. Most of us suffer from inner child wounds. Inner child wounds create limiting beliefs within our subconscious that contradict our true self. This causes us to become out of alignment which can result in many different issues like anxiety, depression, anger, low self-esteem, addictions and even chronic illness. I shed led on what our inner child is, how inner child trauma and wounds develop, what the signs and symptoms of inner child wounds look like so you can better identify your own and how you can heal and release yourself from inner child wounds and step into your authenticity. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/chasingspirituality/support

This one is for the evangelical kids who were forced to watch that "horror" film A Thief in the Night - you know, that movie about going to hell which was also a part of our church summer camp curriculum. Kristina sits down with Luke Barnett, a writer, actor, and producer of the satire film Faith Based. Kristina and Luke dive into his inspiration behind the film, what it was like growing up in a super conservative small high school and then moving to Los Angeles and attending Mosaic Church. Not in that world anymore for over 10 years, Luke shares the fun behind making a hilarious satirical film on the Christian movie industry, something long seen as part of the Evangelical Industrial Complex. Writers, actors, and aspiring producers - this one's for you.Follow Kristina Hart on Instagram: instagram.com/edgykristinahartFollow That's Super Weird Podcast on Instagram: instagram.com/superweirdpodFollow Kristina Hart on Twitter: twitter.com/edgykristinaLuke Barnett is a writer, actor, and producer best known for Faith Based, the satire of the Christian film industry he wrote and starred in opposite Jason Alexander, Lance Reddick, Margaret Cho, and Tanner Thomason.
