Ian Dury & The Blockheads' Chaz Jankel - The Genius Behind 'Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick'

A Breath of Fresh Air

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 5, 2025 52:00

Chaz Jankel came to prominence as the musical director for Ian Dury's Blockheads,  helping to steer those pub rock survivors away from punk and toward funk, disco, and pop. Chaz went further into fusion on his own, creating a stylish music that bridged the boundaries between new wave and the mainstream. When Quincy Jones spotted "Ai No Corrida" on Chaz's eponymous solo debut and decided to have Dune sing the tune, the song became an international hit, reaching 28 on Billboard's Hot 100 and 14 on the U.K. charts,. This established Jankel as a force outside of the Blockheads. Over the next decade, Chaz Jankel worked on his own, releasing a total of four solo albums in the first half of the '80s and scoring a massive dance club hit with '81's "Glad to Know You." Eventually Chaz wound his way back to Ian Dury Iserving as his chief collaborator on 98's  Mr. Love Pants and 2000's Ten More Turnips from the Tip.  Ian Dury died shortly afterward, leaving Chaz as the leader of the Blockheads, a role he'd maintain alongside his solo career.Born in 1952 in Middlesex, Chaz Jankel was drawn to music by Lonnie Donergan , the king of Britain's skiffle craze of the '60s. He had picked up the guitar as a child, then learned piano but while at boarding school, he fell in love with soul and funk. His first major band was the folk-rock group Byzantium and later he joined Jonathan Kelly's Outside, appearing on their '74 LP  Waiting on You, then he went on to play with Kilburn and the High Roads during their final days in the mid-'70s. Jankel hit it off with Kilburn leader Ian Dury, so once  the High Roads split, the pair formed the Blockheads, a punk band that supported Ian Dury on his '77 solo debut, New Boots and Panties! It wa at this time that the band steered itself towards funk and disco - a shift in direction that accentuated Chaz Jankel's musical interests. The album Do It Yourself turned into a huge hit for Ian Dury, providing momentum for Chaz to launch a solo career in 1980; although he'd continue to write with Ian Dury, notably collaborating on "Spasticus Autisticus" from 1981's  Lord Upminster. Signing with A&M, he released his eponymous solo debut Chasanova in 1981 and made inroads in the U.S. thanks to the single "Glad to Know You," which became a number one hit on Billboard's Hot Dance Club Play chart, staying there for seven weeks. That same year, Quincy Jones covered "Ai No Corrida," Chaz's lead track.   Quincy's version became an international hit, turning the song into something of a new wave disco standard. The album Chazablanca arrived in 83 and Looking at You came out in 85.Jankel relocated to the US in the late 1980s, where he started to work as a film composer beginning with the Dennis Quaid -starring remake of the 1949 film noir D.O.A.; the latter was co-directed by Chaz's sister Annabel. Chaz eventually returned to the UK in the mid-'90s, leading to a reunion with Ian Dury and the Blockheads. Jankel and Dury collaborated on the singer's final two albums, 1998's Mr Love Pants and 2000's Ten More Turnips from the Tip. Ian Dury died shortly after this in 2000 and Chaz Jankel continued to lead the Blockheads through a number of tours and records, all the while continuing to work on a solo career of his own. Throughout the 2000s, he regularly released albums. During the 2010s, his recording projects involved the Blockheads, who released Same Horse Different Jockey in 2013 and Beyond the Call of Dury in 2017.Cherry Red Records released Glad to Knot You: The Anthology 1980 - 1986, a five-disc compilation of Jankel's recordings, in 2020 and more recently Chaz has released and reissued a recording of DOA Reimagined. Chaz joins us today to share stories from his amazing journey.#iandury&theblockheads #britishpunk #chazjankel #newwave #funk #disco

Mr.Zonk, the All City Diabolical Dubstar came over for an amazing an open and honest chat about his experiences of growing up in London and finding culture, the graffiti culture and how it moulded him to the man he is today and what a journey he had along the route. We are the same age, met in our teen years at his home in Cricklewood, just up the road from Kilburn, my manor and even though is was the mid nineties his name preceded him, in a big way even back then.. We've hung out, crossed paths and painted over the last nearly 30yrs but I've never had the pleasure of just a firm one on one conversation and it was epic.. Mr.Zonk is a true gent of the culture, a true King, and one that loves the culture so deeply it runs through his veins like fibbing's and a home-made pen. An absolute pleasure having him come visit, this is Mr.Zonk's London, Culture and Creativity story.. This is F24, enjoy.

With its distinctive 16-notes-to-the-bar bassline and unashamedly honky sax solo (played on two saxes at once), Ian Dury and the Blockheads' signature hit was certainly one of the more idiosyncratic No 1s of the 1970s. The same could be said of their inimitable frontman, who exemplified the post-punk era's particular ability to allow unlikely and extraordinary characters to infiltrate the mainstream.Just three years prior to reaching the top spot in January 1979, the edgy, twitchy singer-narrator-wordsmith dubbed “the Count Dracula of vernacular” had been the thirtysomething, struggling frontman of Kilburn and the High Roads, a seemingly washed-up, chaotic, bedraggled bunch of misfits and miscreants. Left with a severely withered arm and leg following a childhood bout of polio, Dury had already overcome disability, taunts and school days he described as “heavy-duty sadism” and “unmitigated hell” to become an unconventional but riveting live performer.

In this episode we welcome music writer/photographer turned award-winning TV director Mick Gold and ask him to return to the mid-'70s to discuss pub rock, Bruce Springsteen and the wonderful Let It Rock magazine. Mick explains how he fell in with Let It Rock's "hard-up left-wing intellectuals" after penning a 5,000-word Beatles thesis at Sussex University. We then hear about the magazine and its eclectic agenda, along with our guest's parallel career as a photographer and his 1976 photo-essay book Rock on the Road. This in turn leads to a conversation about the "pub rock" scene that mushroomed in London during Let It Rock's 1972-75 lifespan. Along with Mick's 1975 Dr. Feelgood interview, Mark, Martin and Barney share their memories of gigs by Kilburn & the High Roads and Chili Willi & the Red Hot Peppers. The gradual transition from Pub to Punk is recalled and analysed with passing reference to Mick's 1976 Street Life interview with Patti Smith. The mid-'70s theme takes us into clips from a 2016 audio interview in which Bruce Springsteen talks to Vanity Fair's David Kamp about 1975's breakthrough classic 'Born to Run' — and then to a further discussion of the Boss' inclusion in Jann Wenner's controversial new book The Masters. After Mark quotes from interviews with Dizzy Gillespie, James Brown, Todd Rundgren, Chic and Wham!, Jasper talks us out with his notes on pieces about Nona Hendryx and Rammellzee. Pieces discussed: The Band, Rock on the Road introduction, Bob Dylan at 60, Brinsley Schwarz, Dr. Feelgood, Pub Rock Proms, Bruce Springsteen on 'Born to Run', Dizzy Gillespie, Ike & Tina Turner, James Brown, Todd Rundgren, Chic, Wham!, Bruce Springsteen, Nona Hendryx and Rammellzee.

Buy Up Late: https://www.shakespeareandcompany.com/books/up-lateReeling in the face of collapsing systems, of politics, identity and the banalities and distortions of modern living, Nick Laird confronts age-old anxieties, questions of aloneness, friendship, the push and pull of daily life. At the book's heart lies the title sequence, a profound meditation on a father's dying, the reverberations of which echo throughout in poems that interrogate inheritance and legacy, illness and justice, accounts of what is lost and what, if anything, can be retrieved. Laird is a poet capable of heading off in any and every direction, where layers of association transport us from a clifftop in County Cork to the library steps in New York's Washington Square, from a face-off between Freud and Michelangelo's Moses to one between the poet and a squirrel in a Kilburn garden. There is conflation and conflagration, rage and fire, neither of which are seen as necessarily destructive. But there is great tenderness, too, a fondness for what grows between the cracks, especially those glimpses into the unadulterated world of childhood, before the knowledge or accumulation of loss, where everything is still at stake and infinite, 'the darkness under the cattle grid'.Nick Laird was born in County Tyrone in 1975. A poet, novelist, screenwriter, critic and former lawyer, his awards include the Betty Trask Prize, the Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize, the Somerset Maugham Award and a Guggenheim fellowship. Since the pandemic, the nature of working has changed, and in some cases, revealed the weaknesses in the experience of work for women. With some companies eager to get back to business as usual, women are now demanding more from work, and they are leaving jobs in unprecedented numbers to get it. Women could benefit from the flexibility that comes with a hybrid office policy. At the same time, it could present challenges for those with caring responsibilities or disabilities who may wish to stay home when other employees would happily go into the office. How can businesses create a working environment that supports women in work? And with that, offer opportunities for women to expand their career potential. To discuss this Katy Balls is joined by Caroline Nokes, MP for Romsey and Southampton who also chairs the Women and Equalities Committee; Fiona Cannon, who is the Group Sustainable Business Director for Lloyds Banking Group; and Tulip Siddiq, Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn who is the Shadow Economic Secretary to the Treasury and Shadow Minister for Cities. Farhan's work and studies have taken him around the world but it's the local, yet no less global, streets of Kilburn, a neighbourhood in northwest London, which informs much of his work.
