“If you feel like you're stuck in your communication, if you feel like you've got a barrier in front of you, if you feel like people have said that you can't do it or you're not that good, whatever it is, three components will get you from where you are to where you want to go,” shares Mike Acker, executive communication coach and author of 10 books, including bestsellers Speak With No Fear and Speak with Confidence. Today, Mike explains how speaking authentically can create executive presence. There can be many types of barriers to success. Some of these barriers may be external and less under your control, such as location or a speech impediment. However, if it is doubt in yourself or a victim mindset that is holding you back, improving your communication can help to remove those obstacles. In the end, poor communication reduces a person's executive presence. And a great leader who communicates poorly will be interpreted as a worse leader than someone who has fantastic communication and mediocre leadership skills. If you are unsure where to start, Miike shares three different aspects of communication seen in those with high executive presence. These are a basic awareness of your starting point, knowledge of what needs to be changed, and lots of practice to build confidence. Quotes “Sometimes it's the doubt that it's even possible. Sometimes it's a lack of desire. Sometimes it's this mindset of, well, not me, I couldn't do that. And it's this victim mentality, and sometimes it's the external obstacles.” (9:08-9:23 | Mike A.) “Your poor communication actually causes people to see you as less than what your leadership presence does.” (14:01-14:10 | Mike A.) “If you feel like you're stuck in your communication, if you feel like you've got a barrier in front of you, if you feel like people have said that you can't do it or you're not that good, whatever it is, three components will get you from where you are to where you want to go.” (30:06-30:20 | Mike A.) In elementary school our English teacher, Mrs. Lamrock would have a public speaking section every year. We'd have to write and present our speech in front of the class. Yes, as much as I love to talk, I would still get butterflies as I walked to the front of the room when my name was called. Some kids having full-blown panic attacks when their names were called. At the time, it seemed pointless and we thought it was some weird form of torture. But as an adult, those skills have proven to be invaluable. So why do we get nervous at the thought of speaking in front of a group? Joining me today is Mike Acker, author of Speak With No Fear to share how you can go from nervous, nauseated with sweaty palms to being a speaker with energy, excitement and passion. INTRODUCTION TO EPISODE 36One of the things that keep you from being a great public speaker is anxiety. We invest so much of our energy thinking over and over the worst-case scenarios and in the process, fall short of giving our best each time.In this episode, Mike talks about easing our anxiety during public speaking. He shares four highly useful strategies to improve our speaking. And the best part? These apply to events of any scale, be it high-profile interviews, online meetings or large gatherings. EPISODE 36 SUMMARY & HIGHLIGHTSWhat are the four ways to ease anxiety when speaking?3:16 1. Practice off-stageThe first step is to practice off-stage what you are going to present on stage. It also involves practicing breath control - not doing so could trigger your anxiety and make you lose focus.5:042. Practice DirtyOften, when we practice our speech, we picture an ideal environment. That may not be the case during the actual presentation. That is why we need to practice dirty. "Practicing dirty" means imagining the worst-case scenarios and being prepared to deal with them. Practicing doesn't necessarily refer to speaking; it includes everything that comes along with it- breathing, smiling, pronunciations, pauses, and the like.6:563. Listen to the expertsWe often give in to the fear of others' opinions. However, an expert's view would do you more good than the audience's view. Most people read the room wrong and jump to conclusions. To eliminate this, we need professional advice.14:374. Dig out your strategyYou need to educate yourself about the various strategies out there and choose one that works the best for you. What are some other tips to reduce your anxiety while public speaking?18:30If you feel like your anxiety or stress is intense, you could always consult a doctor. You could even try taking supplements to take the edge off your stress. One such supplement is Pure Calm . KEY QUOTES:04:32-04:53“The problem is that people don't know how to breathe. So if you learn how to breathe and practice breathing offstage, when you're on stage, breathing becomes a part of your regular rhythm. It's just part of what you do. A lot of times this simple strategy of breathing to release some of your anxiety becomes cumbersome.”12:28-12:38“It's not practice that makes perfect, but it's perfect practice that makes perfect. The more you do it right, the more confident you are going to be when you perform.”13:34-13:38“Correct your thoughts with the right actions. Ultimately, those actions lead to emotions, and action again leads to the thought.” RESOURCES MENTIONED ON THE PODCASTEpisode – ADVANCE with Mike Acker Episode 4 with Aimee BruneauCarmine GalloStress ReliefSupplement is Pure Calm . First a confession: when it comes to public speaking, my freak number is off the charts. I know most people don't like talking in front of groups of strangers – or even groups of friends -- and I know that some people will go to great lengths to avoid those situations. That's where my freak factor comes in. I love public speaking. I love doing it, I love talking about it, analyzing other people's speeches, talking with other people about public speaking, reading books about it, writing articles about it – I just can't get enough. I have not found a support group for freaks like me and I am not sure it exists. I am starting to think I may be the only one in the world with this problem. Fortunately for me – and for you –the Guest Czar for this episode wrote a book on transitioning from nervousness and nausea to becoming a passionate presenter. If you get nervous and nauseous when it comes time to present, you are in good company. I will even go so far as to tell you that you are normal. Lucky you. The good news is that my guest, Mike Acker, author of the book, Speak With No Fear: Go From a Nervous, Nauseated and Sweaty Speaker to an Excited, Energized, and Passionate Presenter, shares some great tips that you and I will both enjoy. Before you roll your eyes and think that Acker is a freak too, I can assure you that he is not. He too hated speaking. As a child, he had a speech impediment. He was terrified of speaking in public. His fears increased exponentially when his family moved to Mexico and he had to speak in Spanish. Acker was further challenged when his family moved back to the United States and he had to adapt to speaking English again. Oh and in college, Acker lived through one of those nightmarish situations where he was presenting and the walls started to close in on him and his words became garbled. So yeah, I think Acker has earned his stripes in the Public Speaking Haters Anonymous Club. Fortunately, Acker transformed himself out of the darkness and into the light of becoming an engaging and passionate presenter. Lucky for us, Acker took notes along the way – and he is willing to share. Listen in and take notes so you can put his tips to use the next time you are preparing a presentation to make it a more enjoyable and enlightening event for you and for your audience. Can you explain what you mean and why it's important for us in speaking or even leadership? In another strategy (You Be You), you write about two weights you carry as a communicator. Can you describe what that means and how that affects confidence? This book doesn't talk about presentation skills or writing speeches. Why didn't you include those? Why can't someone just improve their skills or prepare more? You also frequently suggest people to smile, pause, and breathe. Can you explain your emphasis? This book has received over 300 positive reviews on Amazon since June of 2019, what do you think different about this book from many others written on the topic? You have 3 other books (Write to Speak, Lead With No Fear, & Grow Your Soul), can you give a one sentence intro to these? How did growing up in a different setting (Mexico) affect your communication and leadershipHow can people get your book and learn more about you?----------------------------------------POST A REVIEWGUEST BOOKINGS CLICK HEREFollow me on Social MediaNew Town Big Dreams podcast on FacebookInstagramLinkedinLuke Menkes Kelowna RealtorMy Personal Facebook PageSupport the show (https://paypal.me/lukemenkes)

What an opening story! And the information in this podcast! Mike's book has 500 reviews on Amazon and keeps getting more. Why? Because it touches people. Mike hit a lot of points that LaurieAnn related too. The biggest one is his story about taking his son and initiating him in a sport. How he dealt with the connection and finding "that person" is truly how many adults feel and need to learn how to "find that person" when they first walk in a room, or join a club, or stand before an audience. Find someone "who needs you". Create a relationship.BRILLIANT and so relatable. I, LaurieAnn, will write my thoughts, which I don't often do, however need to here. Today I needed to hear Mike's words. I understood and learned a lot, however interestingly enough it brought me back to speaking to a crowd as a child and it was simple for me. I felt it was so much easier than speaking one on one. I was always the narrator to any school plays, since I was 8 right through to Junior High. I never got the lead roles I wanted. Perhaps that was because it was my strength? The feelings came back. As a child I wasn't afraid. As an adult going before a crowd after not doing it since 2003, I might feel the butterflies not in a row. Like ducks. And his answer for me was. The weights. Listen to hear that analogy. I am sure you will relate. Where do you hold your weights? So much shared.
