No matter how much effort Microsoft expends on the Start Menu, it will never please everyone. The Start Menu does offer a lot of customizations, but if you really want to take control there's Start 11 from Stardock. In Short Circuits: Updating to the latest version of Windows 24H2 created some significant problems on my primary computer, but the update worked flawlessly on the tablet computer. This is why every operating system update needs to be approached with caution. • Too many organizations still force users to change their passwords too frequently, mistakenly believing that doing so improves security. The opposite is true.

This episode contains: All three mighty hosts are here this week. Devon shares that a family is moving in next door. He wonders if they should build a ping-pong fence to create a “play-berhood.” Steven updates us on his mini painting projects and talks about getting life back on track. Ben recounts the long journey of reclaiming space on macOS and solving the wallpaper bug. He mentions tools like Wallpaper Engine and Fences by Stardock. Future or Now? Let's Get Skeptical: Ben discusses the rise of AI-powered photo editing tools like the Pixel 9's Magic Editor, which can create highly realistic fake images. This technology challenges our assumptions about the authenticity of photographs. Read more on The Verge In related news, a lawyer used ChatGPT in federal court, with disastrous results. Read more on Forbes Steven talks about The Acolyte being canceled and shares his thoughts on how loud idiots should be ignored. He also gives early impressions of Star Wars Outlaws after playing 10-12 hours. It's an open-world game, but it lacks the strong hook found in Fallen Order. Book Club: We discuss I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison. This chilling short story explores a dystopian future where a supercomputer has destroyed humanity, save for five individuals it tortures eternally. Goodreads Comic Adaptation Next week we are reading: Falling Down (The Boy in the Iron Box Book 1) by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. This week is all about artificial intelligence, starting with the many ways AI can be used to improve images and sometimes create scenes that do not exist in real life. There are also applications for old and new motion pictures. In Short Circuits: We'll move on to how AI might soon be used to help applications like Waze and Google Maps evaluate more conditions that affect your route. • Is the last place we should ever expect to find AI on the Desktop? Probably not. But is Stardock the last firm we'd ever expect to put it there? Let's ponder that.
Microsoft's big Xbox strategy event was exactly what Paul expected it was going to be. Hopefully, this calmed some nerves. Xbox strategy reveal It was going to be about Activision Blizzard originally (nailed it) All first-party games will be in Game Pass on day one (as is the case now) Game Pass will only be on Xbox (whatever "Xbox" means as it's on PC too) The strategy is unchanged: Meet gamers where they are But the best experience is on Xbox (this is like going from "Windows only" to "Windows first" to "Windows best") Portability across hardware platforms is a key part of the strategy - Backward Compatibility, etc. A future generation of Xbox console hardware will offer "the largest technical leap you have ever seen in a hardware generation." Oh, and four games are coming to "other consoles." Windows 11 Microsoft is quietly adding off-ramps to the Insider Program after killing the Magic window with their screwed-up release schedule Canary and Dev - 24H2, same builds. New navigation pane in Widgets - new accessibility setting for low-vision users - that same tired weather experience on the lock screen that is already in stable and seriously kill me now I can't stand this company anymore. Oh, and there are ISOs. Beta - New prompts for that "manage mobile devices" features, updates to Snipping Tool and Notepad (also in RP) Release Preview - We're testing Moment 5 now, so this is a huge update Microsoft fixed a bug that let Edge siphon browser data from other browsers Stardock brings pre-release support for Arm versions of Start11, Fences, and Groupy to new Object Desktop Insider program Google has an answer for those out of support Windows 10 PCs Build 2024 Microsoft confirms that Build 2024 is May 21-23 in Seattle. Windows 11 cannot be installed on certain computers, mainly older models that lack sufficient hardware, but it is possible to force-install Windows 11 on computers that would fail otherwise because they lack hardware security features. In Short Circuits: With so many free email clients, you might wonder why anyone would be willing to pay $60 per year for one. Anyone who uses multiple mobile devices and wishes the same application was available for all portable and desktop systems might consider it. • If, like me, you're someone who customizes the look and feel of Windows beyond what Microsoft allows, Stardock's Icon Packager is a quick and easy way to make big changes.

The Sysinternals suite of utilities has been around since the 1990s and has been part of Microsoft since 2006. More than 70 utilities make Sysinternals essential for all Windows computer users and today we'll take a look at just two of them. In Short Circuits: Believable sound effects are essential for motion pictures and podcasts, but it's not an easy process. The first step involves identifying and obtaining the right sounds. • Some Windows users like to keep all of their commonly used applications on the Desktop. That has never been my preferred method, but one of the applications included in Stardock's Object Desktop suite has convinced me to make better use of the Desktop.

Microsoft's new PC Manager takes the place of some other utilities such as CCleaner and offers quick, easy access to built-in Windows functions that are often several layers deep in Settings or the Control Panel. In Short Circuits: If you've ever wished you could unsend an email because you forgot to add an attachment or make an important point, SendLater will save the day, but only if you use Thunderbird. • Stardock's SoundPackager makes it easy to add, change, or delete sounds that Windows plays to notify users of specific events, and it cost just $5.

Like the Windows 11 Start Menu or hate it, Start11 from Stardock can make it better. Maybe you'd like the start menu to work the way it did in Windows 7, 8, or 10. Maybe you like the Windows 11 approach, but would like to add some features. That's the point of Start11. In Short Circuits: Python is a popular programming language. It's powerful, but the basics are easy to learn. If you've looked at Python because it's now supported by Excel, you've already started. Maybe this is a language most computer users should be familiar with. • The TechByter website was down for several hours on 8 November and getting a straight answer from the hosting service turned out to be much more difficult than it should have been. Twenty Years Ago (only on the website): Numerous “If Microsoft Made Automobiles” and “If Apple Was An Airline” pieces have circulated on the internet. In late 2003, I received a copy of “If Microsoft|Apple Made Elevators” and I included it on Technology Corner. Enjoy!

On this episode of First Ring Daily, Netflix raises prices, Stardock turns 30, and app models.
In the last few months, we've seen a lot of focus on generative AIs, also known as plagiarism engines. As the models advance, so do the systems that get built around them. This week's internet focus is on a ChatGPT wrapper called Auto-GPT, which allows you to build chained tasks for ChatGPT.What is Auto-GPT?Auto-GPT is a task-oriented wrapper for ChatGPT, an open-source generative AI. It allows users to quickly and easily define tasks for ChatGPT, such as question answering or summarization. The Auto-GPT system is designed with ease of use in mind, allowing users to rapidly design and deploy conversational applications without having to write complex code. Auto-GPT also provides a range of features to customize the behavior and output of ChatGPT, including the ability to define custom responses, enable natural language generation, and add new tasks from templates. The system can be used via the project's website, but it is more commonly used when installed locally. It can be run on Windows, Linux, or macOS, though it is a little less attractive in this instance. To use it, you will need an account with ChatGPT, as well as an API key. It is important to note that API keys get a limited number of requests, so use the system sparingly. The primary usage is to give the system a series of goals which it then uses the underlying language model to accomplish in order. It will then produce a series of steps in order to accomplish the goal. Normally it will ask for permission to take each step in its process, but you can batch approve the requests.Avram's previous testUsing Auto-GPT, Avram created a process to research the best How To guide to produce, write the guide, and then export the result as a text document. The system decided that the topic should be about customizing the Start menu in Windows 11. Using a PC Mag article as its basis, the system created a guide. However, it took 20 minutes before a final result was created. This is because the system was continually displeased with its own work.In one instance, it said that it needed user feedback on the guide before it could call it complete. Avram gave it permission to get that user feedback, which only took a few seconds. This seems less like it got user feedback and more like the incident where an AI tricked a user into filling out a Captcha by claiming it was a blind person. No mater the process it went through, the end result was terrible and inaccurate. The whole thing came in around 50 words, with step titles and no actual description. But, even the steps were wrong. The system did not understand the difference between the Start menu and Start11, a product from Stardock which helps improve the customization of the Start menu. So, when all was said and done, the output was an inaccurate ripoff of an existing article which would help no one.
Rob and Ben sat down with Brad Wardell, the CEO of Stardock, and discussed with him the future of Galactic Civilizations 4, what may have gone wrong in its development, but where it's headed now, and how AI has started to shape game development. Happy #InternationalPodcastDay! For today's review, Zach is jumping into the incredibly daunting and intimidating, Galactic Civilizations II: Ultimate Edition. Fun fact about GC2UE; its developer, Stardock Entertainment, is actually a Michigan based game and software development company! For those on the East and West coasts, might not seem like a lot; however, it's rather rare in the Midwest. Here's a brief synopsis from Steam: Galactic Civilizations II is the sequel to 2003's hit turn-based strategy game of the same name. The player takes on the role of the leader of a space-faring civilization and must guide its expansion in a hostile galaxy. Gamers must balance their economic, technological, diplomatic, cultural, and military power to forge alliances, fight wars, and ultimately dominate the galaxy. The game is single-player and allows the player to play randomly generated galactic maps or play through a multi-mission campaign that tells the story of an ancient enemy called the Dread Lords.Welcome to the Never Ending Backlog.Important Links:Developer's Site: https://www.stardock.com/games/Steam Store: https://store.steampowered.com/app/202200/Galactic_Civilizations_II_Ultimate_Edition/

Rob was lucky enough to sit down with Derek Paxton, now of Stardock, but formerly of Fall From Heaven 1/2 fame. There was a lot of news that came out of E3, but I really screwed up trying to get Ultimate and now have three years worth of Xbox Live Gold codes I can't use. Beat Saber got a DLC pack full of Imagine Dragons songs. Konami announced the TurboGrafx-16! Final Fantasy VIII is finally being remastered! Banjo-Kazooie is in Smash! Animal Crossing was delayed to 2020, and Nintendo's new President Doug Bowser says it was to preserve work-life balance for the development team. Shenmue 3 was announced to be an Epic Games Store exclusive for one year, and they aren't refunding Kickstarter backers who wanted a Steam version. The Star Control lawsuit between Stardock and the original creators is now over, and all parties seem happy. Gamestop is shutting down ThinkGeek and will roll their products into the Gamestop stores. Amazon quietly laid off many people in it's Amazon Game Studios division, having them seek other opportunities within Amazon or take a severance package. Then we take calls about Beat Saber licensing, Elite: Dangerous in VR, and if E3 is dead or not.

To the great surprise and happiness of many Star Control fans (myself included), it was announced yesterday that Stardock and Paul Reiche & Fred Ford have amicably settles the legal mess surrounding the rights to Star Control. Not only that but they did so in a way that will allow both of them to keep making their own games for the series and also, the agreement contains some hilarious, legally binding clauses that only this group would have come up with. It's a great day for Star Control fans and I talk about the agreement and why I think this is such a great thing. After a bruising takedown fight, Star Control: Origins is once again available for purchase on Steam, and all without a court order for one side or the other. With Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford having now disclosed evidence of their claims against Stardock and Star Control: Origins, it's clear that they are challenging infringement based on the "look and feel" of the game, rather than the component assets. Why should such a claim make the industry nervous? And just how can the DMCA be better drafted to prevent more spurious claims? One of gaming's biggest legal scuffles of 2018 has apparently boiled over as Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford have issued a DMCA takedown notice against Star Control: Origins and Stardock, causing both Steam and GOG to remove the game. What is the reason behind the notice? How does the DMCA work? Why are Steam and GOG all but required to follow the instructions of the takedown due to the language of the Copyright Act? I highly recommend listening to the prior episode on this first: https://anchor.fm/geekbravado/episodes/Episode-20-Jan-2---2019---The-Star-Control-Legal-Mess-e2s7mq Since I recorded my original episode on this issue, Paul Reiche & Fred Ford have finally come out with a list of what from Star Control II they believe Star Control: Origins is infringing on, in order to justify their having the game pulled from sale. Their claims are to put it mildly, dubious. As a passionate fan who has emotional investment in this matter resolving amicably and has tried to remain as neutral and objective as possible, it's getting harder and harder to have sympathy for Paul & Fred here. I go into this with a way that probably most demonstrates the "Bravado" that this show is titled after: Stardock forum thread showing Fred & Paul's claims, along with their refutation: https://forums.starcontrol.com/492870/at-long-last-reiche-and-ford-state-what-they-think-they-own A modified version of the claims chart, showing how nearly everything Paul & Fred claim is infringing, are things that Star Control II also infringes from StarFlight, a game from a decade prior: http://www.viridiangames.com/images/updatedchart.png Virtual Legality #11-2: Look, Feel, and the DMCA (Hoeg Law): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xgmX2GHF88o Buy a Steam key for Star Control: Origins for 50% off (while supplies last): https://www.stardock.com/games/starcontrol/store#purchase

Star Control II from the 90s if my favourite game of all-time and recently, Stardock Entertainment released a spiritual successor called Star Control: Origins, that is among my favourite games of 2018. Starting late in the game's development, the original creators of the Star Control series entered into a heated legal battle with Stardock, resulting in a lot of public mud slinging and most recently, Star Control: Origins being pulled from Steam and GOG due to DMCA complaints made with very suspiciuous timing. It's a very complicated issue with no clear indication of who is fully in the right. I discuss the mess from a hardcore fan's perspective and though I believe it appears Stardock is more in the right here, try to provide as balanced a perspective as I can and also appeal to both sides to try and figure this out, for the fan's sake. Though these are long, I highly recommend reading and watching the following if you want to be informed of just how complicated this dispute is: Stardock Q&A: https://www.stardock.com/games/starcontrol/article/487690/qa-regarding-star-control-and-paul-and-fred Virtual Legality Episode from Hoeg Law: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gVJIgLnDbcQ Leonard French Video (Part 1): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it50gS5yYB4 Leonard French Video (Part 2): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yochP8F69LY
This episode is our third Game Club, where we pick a game that neither of us have played before, play it separately, and then come together with our own fresh thoughts to discuss it on Octal FM.This time, it's Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, a sci-fi RTS from Stardock.

Time for episode 43 where I'll be talking about a group of WWII flight sims from Lucasarts, Battlehawks 1942, Their Finest Hour: Battle of Britain and Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe. As always though, the news: 7th Guest 3: The Collector has restarted a new crowd funding campaign with a more reasonable goal. Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout Tactics have been removed from both GoG and Steam due to rights transfer. Wired.co.uk did a great interview with the managing director of GoG.com. Stardock has announced they are actively working on a new Star Control game. We then get to the main topic, the Lucasarts flight sims. We have a great discussion of the history of these three games plus one more I hadn't heard of. Next time, I'll be talking RTS with Dune. Enjoy!
We heard the people, and we brought Three Moves Ahead directly to the masses who gathered at PAX East. But what if you missed it? Will we punish you for your lack of dedication? Yes, but you can still listen to this episode. Listen to Rob forget to introduce himself or the panel, a panel that includes Troy, Julian, Paradox's Chris King (Victoria II), Stardock's Jon Shafer (Civ V), and Hasbro's Rob Daviau (Risk Legacy). Why is this such a good time to be a strategy gamer, and how can we make it better?
Brad returns from his self-imposed exile, and we dazzle him--Rip-Van-Winkle-style--with tales of Mega Man Universe, the cancellation of The Agency, the rise and fall and re-rise of Majesco, GameStop going digital, Stardock confusion, and much more! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5928697/advertisement
Troy and Rob start the show with a talk about what Derek Paxton's move to Stardock means for Elemental and the future of Stardock. They then segue into a discussion about logistics and supply rules constrain the player in interesting ways. Rob tells another wargame anecdote, we debate whether an AI really understands supply rules and again talk about the best RTS ever made. This is the October pledge drive, as well, so stay tuned to the end for another plea for money. Not for beer.

A terrible launch of a game I wanted to love turns what should have been a "WOW" show into another opportunity for Brad Wardell to explain how Stardock screwed up. Listen how imperfect QA practices, overconfidence, groupthink and not taking every beta crash report seriously turned one of the years most anticipated new IPs into a lesson for developers And also, how Stardock commits to make things right - including refunds. (Ask them. I have no idea what the mechanics are.) Rob's review Troy's review Tom's review

This week, Troy, Julian and Rob are joined by PR pros Joe Ziemer (Triple Point PR, Paradox shill) and Stephanie Schopp (Tinsley PR, Stardock water carrier) to talk about marketing strategy games in this gaming and business environment. Is strategy gaming really dead? How do you find new audiences and keep the old ones? How do PR people deal with media and developers?
In this lightning filled episode, Xenocore from The Ultimate Quest joins us to play Demigod while we interview Mike Marr, Lead Designer at Gas Powered Games. Listen as Xenocore dies...repeatedly! On the CC Gaming Hardware Spotlight, we show another Xbox 360 repaired by another company - 360-pros.com - that used food and drink coupons as heat sinks...We're not kidding! Then we try to play a few games of Bionic Commando (the multiplayer demo) with our listeners, but the lack of a friends only lobby option kills that.
